So, I’ve decided on a system for classifying ghosts!
Elemental type ghosts are ghosts that possess an element. Their bodies are made entirely of the element they possess. Examples include Lava Bubbles, Magmaarghs, and Freezies:

They can possess any element, though fire appears to be the most common.
Illusion type ghosts are ghosts that don’t possess a vessel, simply appearing as they already are. Examples include Boos and Bonneters, as well as the many ghosts that appear in Luigi’s Mansion:

The final class, the physical type, is ghosts that possess a physical body. While anything could be a potential vessel (for example, the piano from Super Mario 64), this class is mostly made of recently deceased ghosts who possess their old bodies. Examples include the many skeletal creatures like Dry Bones and Fish Bones:

All three classes are made up of both ghosts that were once living beings and ghosts that are “born” as ghosts.
With that in mind, I wanna talk about the Tostarenans and Chinchos.

Chinchos appear to be undead Tostarenans despite Tostarenans themselves already being undead. So I’m thinking the Chinchos are the illusion form of the Tostarenans, meaning them without a body to possess. And they get aggressive when they don’t have their body. Not all ghosts are like this, in fact the Tostarenans might be the only ones like this. I’m sure I’ll figure out a lore reason for why they become hostile when they lose their bodies…
#devin speaks#super mario headcanons#i mainly wanted to talk about the tostarenans/chinchos but i had to explain the ghost classes first#its probably futile to try to classify something as broad and varied as ghosts since there will probably be some that wont fit anywhere#but whatever we’ll cross that bridge when we get there#me studying ghosts so hard i put elvin out of business >:3c

Bowser Miku
this was def inspired by the recent Project Voltage stuff- she's got a Clown Cat skirt, a tie based off that Mario 64 painting, holding a Bullet Bill blaster... she's got Magmaargh twin tails, a Goomba shoe and a Piranha Plant stocking... idk this was a fun design but man the colors was tough

Other Mario examples
Super Mario Bros. USA: Red Snifit
Super Mario Bros. 3: Fire Bro.
Super Mario World: Fishin' Lakitu, Fishin' Boo, Bullet Bill Blaster
Super Mario 64: Cheep Cheep, Moneybags, Bullet Bill Blaster, Fwoosh
Super Mario Galaxy: Big Goomba, Spiny Cheep Cheep, Lil' Springy, Jammyfish
New Super Mario Bros.: Balloon Boo, Kab-omb, Blue Koopa
New Super Mario Bros. U: Thwimp, Magmaargh

Only one Flame Chomp appears in the entirety of New Super Mario Bros. U, found in a hidden room in Peach's Castle-3. These enemies appear in much larger numbers in New Super Luigi U, and were likely programmed in specifically to be used in the DLC, so that it is possible that the inclusion of this one was meant to be a kind of "preview".

A bunch more Mario Story/Paper Mario sprites, in all elements!
A slight catch up wave. This time, though, it's for newer sprites and pieces I've done. BABY YOSHI
PIDER & OTHER COLORATIONS (TTYD)- I made their legs thicker, yet still toonish.
SANDMAARGH & MAGMAARGH- I've been wanting to do the former for a long time, and luckily remembered to do the latter at the same time.
PIRRA T/LEGENDARY CAPTAIN TOAD/ROGUESKIPPER TOAD REDESIGN- For this redesign, I used composite elements from the (vastly superior) beta designs.
BONUS- more Baby Yoshi colors (links only)

Sandmaargh: The sand-dwelling cousin of the Magmaargh
———————————————————————
These sand-dwelling doofuses are adapted for life in the shifting sands.
Muscular limbs adorned with sharp claws for digging in the desert sands.
A black membrane surrounds the eyes, acting like sunglasses to protect them from the desert sun.
They can close their nostrils when digging to prevent sand from getting into their airways.
Like their lava-dwelling cousins, they are ambush hunters, hiding beneath the sand and lunging when prey gets close, but unlike the Magmaarghs, they’re less gluttonous since their arid environment has less resources.
They have a single row of red dorsal spines running from just behind the eyes, down the length of the back, and to the tail

Are Dragons canon in you Super Mario AU?? I mean, in lots of games they are different kinds of dragon like characters like Paper Mario, Galaxy and even Odyssey, so I was just wondering if dragons are as well a canon species in your AU or not. Just asking out of curiosity.
Technically yes, though not in any way you might be thinking. I won't be including super great, super huge dragons in the AU because they always felt a little out of place in Super Mario. What they consider "dragons" include:
-Rexes (as in the Super Mario rex, not an actual t-rex)
-Blarggs (including Magmaarghs and Charvaarghs)
-Plessisaurs
All of these creatures are reptilians-like and are known to have wings, but cannot fly. Rexes are only lightly an exception because they are known to be able to hover for very short periods of time, and glide for a distance.

yes yes very interesting... this shall go into the knowledge bank for future use... what future use? we shall never know...
-✨️

so I know what sets apart a charvaargh, but what is the difference between blarggs and magmaarghs? i genuinely can't tell-
-✨️
blarggs debuted in super mario world, and would rise out of the lava to briefly lunge at mario. they received a redesign in the yoshi’s island games but retain the same general behavior of trying to eat the player
magmaarghs debuted in super mario galaxy 2 and typically remained in one spot to attempt to surprise the player by lunging down, very similar to blarggs. they appeared alongside magmaws, which would travel in a set path along the planet. in later appearances however, magmaarghs would take on the traveling behavior of magmaws for themselves, fully setting themselves apart from blarggs
