MG is so closely associated with sports cars that some people forget that the company always built family cars. In the mid-50s, that family car was the Z-magnette, which at first got a cool reception from “MG Purists” (what MG didn’t?). By the time of the ZB Varitone, seen here, they’d grown to love it, and rightly so. “Varitones” had a wraparound backlight and jaunty two-tones as the name implied. They were the best of the Zs - faster than the earlier ZA and more overtly stylish than the regular ZB. They were not built in big numbers, but they were MG’s most successful sedans up to that time. The story begins a decade earlier with designer Gerald Palmer. Palmer, who’d been a designer at Morris in the 1930s, had left Morris for Jowett during the war (shortly after working with Alec Issigonis on the MG YA), where he designed the highly advanced Javelin and Jupiter - not only overseeing their styling but their mechanical bits too. Jowett’s resources were too thin to make the Javelin a success, and Palmer returned to “Nuffield Org” in 1949. He was immediately tasked with coming up with new models for MG, Riley, and Wolseley with platform sharing in mind - and he sketched the first new MG sedan that same year. To save costs, the new MG sedan would share many parts with the Wolseley 4/44. Like the Javelin, they’d both be light, strong unibody designs. When Nuffield and Austin merged into BMC in 1952, it was Wolseley that got the priority - introduced that fall with MG’s ZA having to wait a year. The 4/44 had used MG’s old XPAW engine, while the MG used Austin’s new B-series, strange to purists at first but later an MG cornerstone. There was also some criticism of its obvious kinship with the Wolseley. But the ZA (two inches lower than the 4/44) looked good and drove well; its unibody shell, sharp front suspension, and optional radials augmenting its light, sporty feel (for a family car). Everything about the ZA was made better in late 1956 when it was refreshed into the ZB Magnette. Higher compression, bigger SU H4 carbs, and higher final drive made it faster and quieter.
