WIP Wednesday

Thanks to @anderstrevelyan for the tag because I actually have words for the week! This snippet was inspired by a prompt from @mxkelsifer for my Commoner Inquisitor and Lace Harding: I decided to take the actual ask in a different direction, but I'm proud of this little scene so here it is ❤️

He scowled but Harding only snickered. "It's a dance, Inquisitor. Not a fight. Stop trying to 'win' it."

His expression softened around the eyes, but his jaw stayed tense. His lips parted then pursed again like he was chewing on his words. 

"I just … want to do it right." 

"You're just learning," she replied with a breezy smile. "You didn't pick up a shield one day and become a captain the next. And this … well it's all about flow. Grace."

"Fantastic," he replied in a heavy deadpan.

"Oh, all it takes is time." She squeezed the Inquisitor's hand, which had gone a little clammy and stiff during the lesson. "That's all I meant. You don't have to be a natural."

She moved through the steps again, practically pulling the large man along with her. The shuffle of his heavy footsteps echoed in the rafters of the tower. Lace had cleared out one of the storage floors for their late night lessons. She was surprised that anyone had taken her up on her offer, given her erratic schedule, and even more surprised that it was the Herald himself. But in a cotton shirt under leather jerkin and trousers, he looked more like the Redcliffe blacksmith than any Leader of the Faithful. 

"I'm wasting your time." 

Harding blinked, startled out of her reverie. "What?"

Such a sinful thought of Magnus and Alexandra watching the sky and Alexandra pointing at various stars and constellations while Magnus holds her hand and watches her and the stars

Such sin. Alexandra might stroke the shapes of the constellations of the stars on his skin, reciting the myths and stories of them low in his ear, while saying how much he is her stars, and how he lit the darkness up for her.

Nils is a little timid and doesn’t speak his mind well, but he’s a cinnamon roll. Magnus has a hard time speaking and is a little eccentric, but he’s a good boy.

i was tagged by @another-rogue-trevelyan in wip whenever, along with @cartadwarfwithaheartofgold from the other day. thank you both!

i had to go digging to find these scraps, but the first is for the magnus archives, after i found out that daisy's va is nonbinary:

Daisy remembered staring at zir own hand, the day it happened. Watching it spasm open and closed beside zir head like some strange, pale flower searching for the moonlight. Instead, it met a spreading patch of liquid on the concrete that soaked zir sleeve in moments and left zir even more lightheaded than ze had already been.

That's petrol, Daisy remembered thinking as ze stared at what ze had been lying in. Zir own thoughts at the time had come from somewhere far away. Another country, maybe, or another time. One far enough in the future that all of the fear and the guilt and the pain that throbbed dully between zir shoulder blades no longer had any meaning.

Walking back into the streets of Kirkwall was like passing from a dark room into a bright one. Everything stood out sharp, too close and undefined at the edges where people moved in sudden, jerking movements. He didn't dare look closer to try and make them slow down by paying attention, not with the way their presence already stabbed bright lances of fear right through him. Swallowing hard, Garrett turned his feet towards The Hanged Man, the bar where Varric made his home.

It was hard to make progress at first, or so he thought. Every step felt like he was moving through molasses, or water, a thought that put his back up. He walked stiffer than his usual, and shoved his hands in his pockets. Picture, chain, breath, breath, let it out.

It became easier to think.

He was looking for Varric, for answers. He hoped he would find them in the same place, but if he had to, he would look elsewhere. He knew where.

After what felt like twenty minutes but was more like ten, Garrett looked up from where he had been watching the pavement turn to cracked cobblestones and back then back again, up and up to the sway of the mannequin outside of the Hanged Man, still a few building down. He knew as well as anyone that it had used to be a sign of a knight, but after the templars took exception to that, the owners had changed it to a faceless mannequin who swung by one ankle and twisted in the chill wind.

Garrett shrugged and started forward, only to jerk to a stop at movement off to the side. He had a sudden, wild hope that it would be Fenris standing there, but the body language and colors and angles were all off. It was Varric. "Varric," he shuddered out, stumbling over to brace an arm against the wall. He sagged with a shaking exhale, then an inhale, then back out on a, “What are you doing here.” Instead of what he’d wanted to say, which was, ‘Why?’ but he suspected Varric heard it anyway by the narrowing of his eyes.

end-of-year fic writer roundup

Thanks @hawkeish​ for the tag! (I say, as if I lowkey didn’t bully you into tagging me :’) )

word count: 380,935 words published to AO3 since my first foray into fic in february, by far the most words I’ve ever written in a year. It’s amazing what clinging to a hyperfixation for any sense of self while living alone in a pandemic will do to your productivity.

new things I tried this year: like hawkeish, fanfic in general! I’d never written fanfic before this year, and it was the perfect hyperfixation to pick up roughly 3 weeks before the first UK lockdown. While I was depressed in December, I made a new year’s resolution for 2020 to try to rediscover the joy of writing again by Any Means Necessary. Add a pandemic into the mix where I was cut off from all my friends in England, and I decided to focus on fanfic rather than original fic, because I needed to write only for me and I needed it to make me happy. Thank god it worked! Fic is literally the only thing keeping me going at times. It helped me recover from my depression and it remains my no.1 pandemic coping mechanism.

fic I spent the most time on: obvs all 325k of Eye of the Storm, given that my other published fics are 1/10 of the word count.

fic I spent the least time on: I think the one I’m currently posting, Fortress of Highever? Because I set myself a deadline for the draft that I met, and also Alistair is way too nice to cause half the drama of any of the other DA characters.

favourite thing I wrote: this works out very neatly, because it is absolutely A Man’s Word is His Bond. I think Eye of the Storm is kind of a hot mess, but this fic literally does everything I wanted it to. I just wanted to read something with the same kind of dynamic as Howl/Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle (as in, dramatic disaster bisexual and his hypercompetent wife), so I wrote myself a trashy soulmate AU. I reread this fic whenever I am ill.

favourite thing I read: I’ve struggled with reading in general this year, favouring webtoons over both books and fics. But I really liked The Prince’s Penance by Ocreata which is a Sebastian/F!Trevelyan fic (I want to marry this version of Evelyn plz), Of Amulets and Dragons by MakjangCandy (Modern Girl in Thedas WITH ADDED KDRAMA TROPES, meaning it is literally a mashup of my two comfort genres) and a old Handers fic I found called A Little White Lie by CherieoftheDragons, which wonderfully lampshades how awful and inappropriate and endearing all of Hawke’s canonical flirting dialogue is.

Also, it ain’t a Dragon Age fic, but any fan of the Magnus Archives, or anyone who has ever had to do work with GDPR in the UK should read Beholding the GDPR: How the Magnus Institute Updated Its Privacy Policy for the Twenty-First Century And Only Caused One Nervous Breakdown In The Process by shinyopals, which is one of the best and funniest goddamn fics I’ve ever read.

writing goals for next year: Finish Eye of the Storm without losing motivation in a motivation destroying world. Write my Modern Girl in Thedas project, if only to have a chance to drag another Dragon Age love interest within an inch of his life. Tentatively look at my original fic WIPs sidelong.

Magnus often wants to hear Alexandra’s theories on magic, urging her own with words and soft stares as his wife’s rapidly talks about a new development she made.

If he noticed she has not been getting enough sleep, he is not opposed to using his great strength to carry her to bed and keeping her there for cuddles.

Alexandra makes him feel loved, when at times he finds it hard to do it himself, and finds qualities within him that he once thought dead or never existed.

Magnus probably cried when she first murmured she loved him.

I was surprised ~the sex scene~ happens so soon in the story (in Mass Effect you usually have to wait until the end of the game). This is better, ofc. I love how much interaction Magnus has with Dorian.

And I love how Dorian admitted he’s “not a nice man” and he really wanted the d. I mean really wanted it.

Then it got fluffy and adorable and the love theme could be heard. Gorgeous.
