The wedding of Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper

(Jim x Joyce, Aricka Hopper, Jonathan Byers, Will Byers, Jane Ellie/Eleven Hopper)

August 13 1987

Aricka stands in front of the mirror, her purple bridesmaid dress making her look like a cupcake. Her short cropped hair was curled and pinned away from her face, and she wore white sandals with buckles on them.

Someone knocks on the door and it opens to reveal- “Jonathan,” she says softly. Her new big brother opens the door all the way.

“May I come in? I have something for you that I want you to have before the wedding.” He holds out a wrapped gift.

“I wasn’t gonna give you yours til after but I can-,” Aricka starts but he stops her.

“No no, no, it’s fine. I just- I just want you to know I’m really, really happy that this is happening. I’m glad you’re gonna be my little-by- two-months sister.” The words almost make her tear up but she unwraps the gift and sees-

A brown leather bound book that says “Aricka, Will, Jane and Jon’s Adventure Book.” Carefully she opens it- and then the tears come. The book was FILLED with pictures Jonathan had taken of the four of them-

One at Aricka and Will’s first theater performance together. One of Aricka and Jane the day they officially adopted her- Jane had jumped into Aricka’s arms and cried. Aricka had a huge proud smile on her face. One of Aricka and Jonathan on graduation day- Aricka’s arms wrapped carefreely around his neck and his chin leaning against her forehead. One of them after the battle of Starcourt- Jane asleep in Aricka’s arms, Will leaned over against her. Aricka had a bloody lip and cuts on her forehead; and she looked exhausted, but this was the moment Aricka and Jonathan really leaned on each other for the first time. Clinging to their new sibling status. One of them and Argyle at the pizza place- Argyle holding up bunny ears behind Jon’s head.

So many memories. Will and Aricka on the closing night of her senior year musical. Jon and Aricka hugging in the reception line for that same musical. Aricka and her dad on graduation, then Joyce and Aricka and Jon together.

The last page didn’t have any pictures, but a quote instead: “A picture is worth a thousand words, but a memory is priceless.”

She looks up, tears dribbling down her cheeks as she sets the book down and walks over to hug him. Jon’s hug was as comfortable as ever, her chin on his shoulder, his temple pressed against hers, his arms around her back with hers around his neck. “I love you Jonathan Hopper-Byers,” she whispered.

“I love you too, Aricka Hopper-Byers. Now let’s go watch mom and dad get married.”

Aricka and Jon stood at the back of the chapel together, watching as Holly and Mike Wheeler walked down the aisle as the flower girl and ring bearer, and both stood with the bridal and groom parties when they finished. Next was Jane and Will, who linked arms and skipped down the aisle to the altar, the wonder twins making the audience chuckle fondly.

Then it was their turn. Jon offered his arm to Aricka. “Shall we; sis?” He asks softly. Aricka smiles, loops her hand through his arm; and pats his shoulder.

“Let’s go, big bro.” He smiles, a rare Jonathan Byers smile, and together they walk to the future.

“Do you, Jim Hopper; take Joyce Byers to be your lawfully wedded wife; to have and to hold, for richer for poorer, better or worse, sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?” Aricka was crying as she watched her dad get married, and Chrissy hands her a handkerchief to wipe her tears away.

“I do,” he says.

“And do you Joyce Byers take Jim Hopper to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for richer for poorer, better or worse, sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?” Joyce smiled up at Hop and says as softly as Aricka had ever heard her,

“I do.”

“By the power vested in me; I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride.” Aricka and Jonathan beam at each other before bursting into cheers as their parents kiss.

“Hi; I’m Aricka, and I had the honor of being the matron of honor for my mama Joyce’s wedding. I was struggling to write a speech for today, and my big brother Jonathan said that I should do what I do best- write a song. So that’s what I did. Chrissy-?” The girl moves to the piano in the room, and Aricka moves to the sole mic stand. “This song is dedicated to my parents, my three siblings, and my husband. I love all of you guys so much. I’m feeling the love right now.”

Chrissy begins to play; and Aricka begins to sing;

“You don't know you've been looking 'til you find it

Don't know what you've been missing 'til it's there

It's stronger than a spell, it's magic in itself

It's an ever after like you've never felt…” she motions for her dad and mom to take the dance floor, and they do, gently swaying to the music.

“It's the sum of the times of your life…” Steve walks over to stand by her: and she grins as she sings to him,

“It's the person you're standing beside

And it's the pride that you're feeling inside

For who you are, you've come so far…” she takes the mic off the stand and starts jumping and spinning,

“I'm feeling the la-la-love

True love you can't deny…” Chrissy joins Aricka, adding a beautiful harmony to the song;

“I'm feeling that dream come true

Here with you

And love is around us too

Ooh, and I feel the love (I'm feeling the)

Aricka and Billy start singing together, sharing a mic as they dance, and Aricka Harrington’s siblings join her on the floor,

“The journey might not always be that easy

Together or apart, you gotta trust your heart 'cause

Will and Jane take turns spinning each other around, their laughter filling the room with love and warmth, and Aricka Harrington takes the chorus,

Aricka and Steve are in their own little world; gazing into each other’s eyes and singing,

Are you feeling it-?” And then Eddie Munson and Dori Henderson take their solo, hands clasped as they sing, (Eddie in parentheses)

The entirety of the Hawkins/Upsidedown gang were on the floor; the love they shared on full display, and Aricka finished the song she wrote with a soft,

“I'm feeling the la-la-love

La-la-love

I'm feeling the la-la-love…” and then her siblings- all three of them- run over to hug her.

Will was first - no longer the little boy who would press his face into her stomach, but now he would rest his head on her shoulder, one arm around her neck the other arm around her back, both of hers around his middle- and he was crying. “I love you Aricka,” he said. “I’m glad we’re actually siblings now. This is gonna be so great-!”

Jane was next. “Sisters always,” she whispered, as they had ever since El first showed up in Hawkins. Jane wrapped her arms around Aricka’s middle; and Aricka had one arm around her back, the other hand cradled her head to Aricka’s shoulder.

Jonathan waited patiently for his chance, and they hugged just as they had before the wedding. “Love ya sis. You did great,” he said.

Joyce and Jim follow them; Jim cupping Aricka’s cheeks and kissing her forehead as he had since she was a child, Joyce hugging Aricka and cradling the back of her head against her shoulder. “Thank you, baby,” Joyce whispers.

“I love you mom,” Aricka whispered back. “I love you, dad.”

“I love you too, baby girl.” Pride was not the adequate word Jim was looking for when he looked down at his firstborn- the little girl who had once been his only reason for living. He had done everything he could do so his daughter would be happy and be able to do whatever she wanted to do.

Now they both had the happy ending they deserved.

And Aricka couldn’t wait to see what the next chapter brought.

a night out without the kids. almost an unheard of event. but tonight corroded coffin were performing their annual concert the night before halloween.

sissy & oz toted their overnight bags up the paved sidewalk to grandma and grandpa’s house— the same house you had once called home when the wheeler’s took you in as a teen.

reaching the front door eddie squats to eye level with the twin three year olds. “okay you two,” he says in his fatherly tone, “last time you stayed the night grandpa said you terrorized the cat.”

“i no do it daddy,” sissy speaks her little voice high pitched and tattling, “ows chaseded hims.”

a frown spreads on her brothers face his brown eyes pleading, “i did not! sissy made tinky swim in the potty!”

eddie bites his lip to hide a laugh and you take a deep breath, “that’s another thing, the cat’s name is bruce, not stinky.”

“but mama,” sissy complains, head held high in a defiant pose— one eddie recognizes as a mini version of his wife, “boose 's hard to say.”

eddie ruffles her hair and stands up, talking out of the side of his mouth, “always arguing like someone else i know,”

his large hand slides down the curve of your ass pinching the leather fabric snug on your skin, giving it a tight little squeeze.

“eddie!” you scold, swatting his hand away, “not in front of the babies.”

he grabs your waist and pulls you back into him before you can rap your knuckles on the front door. his mouth is hot in your ear, “sorry mama,” he purrs, dancing his tongue on the shell of your ear, “you just look so fucking hot tonight.”

sissy and oz are both slapping the door with both palms as it swings inward. “who’s makin’ all that racket?!”

“gwampa! it’s us!”

“issy and ows!”

wayne smiles as big as he always did when his grandbabies visited, “are you sure y’all ain’t no robbers are ya?”

“gwampa’s silly, daddy!” oz squeaks, squeezing wayne tight around his leg.

eddie grins and chuckles, “aww nah buddy that word is ‘senile’”

you smack eddie in the chest and usher the kids inside to play with their cousin, alex. “thanks for watching them tonight, we really appreciate it,” you say to wayne reaching through the threshold and giving him a hug.

“ah, ain’t no problem,” wayne says flipping eddie the bird behind your back, “karen and i love these little turds.”

“u too oh two be good for grandpa and grandma okay? eddie hollers, “be nice to the cat, sissy… i’m talkin’ to you.”

her little nose wrinkles into a pout and her brows furrow together.

“swear to christ himself, that kid is the spittin’ image of you, tooty.”

“god help me.” eddie pouts, “i’m gonna go gray before i’m forty.”

you kiss the kids goodbye and wave from the windows of your jeep before heading to the hideout. eddie looked particularly good tonight, leather pants, a cut off shirt, he even let you smear some eyeliner on his eyelids before tonight’s gig.

“nervous?” you ask, carrying some cords from eddie’s old van that now belonged to big d.

gareth walks past you with an amp, “not really, the hideouts like home away from home, makes me feel 18 again.”

you smile and ruffle his still thick curls, “will coming tonight?”

a sad look replaces his smile, “haven’t talked to him in a week… last i heard from jonathan he was staying with joyce and hopper.”

“he’ll come around man,” eddie says coming through the back door, “he loves you.”

“yeah, i hope.”

the boys— men now— rocked a killer show, fans still screaming for the band even though half of them were married and the lead singer had two kids.

you were front in center, in your designated spot that you always stood after the first show where eddie sang ‘lady evil’ just for you.

now you were sporting a new homemade shirt, ‘sitter’ crossed out with ‘mama’ his old leather jacket on your shoulders.

a hand sits on your lower back you giggle, “jeez nance, how drunk are you?”

only it wasn’t nancy, but a random guy. burly and tall, a thick beard on his face matching the short hair on his head, balancing a cowboy. you didn’t recognize him from anywhere and you pull back with a shocked face,

he smiles and you can smell liquor on his breath as he leans in real close, “been watchin’ you all night little darlin’ looks like you need a drink.”

you scowl and turn away from him, looking for jonathan and nancy but they’re nowhere to be found.

“hey,” he blunders stumbling towards you, “you like cowboys?”

you don’t want to give him the time of day or even the satisfaction of a tasteful retort so you do your best to ignore him, looking at eddie as he turns to thrash the guitar riff with jeff.

eddie turns back around to continue the song and shoots you a wink, the same time a big sloppy pair of lips press on your cheek, hard and unwelcoming.

you didn’t see eddie’s eyes turn to black or the way he dropped the neck of his guitar hands balled into fist, you were seeing your own scarlet red, turning and slapping the face of the drunk asphalt “cowboy”.

eddie cuts the band and grabs the mic, “hey fucker!” he pushes his lips in a smooch and whistles like a dog, “here boy, up here.. yeah you— the guy who just got slapped.”

cowboy slap face looked up to the band, “what?”

“you must be new to town, huh? a drifter maybe?”

he lifts his head and spits on the ground, “what’s it to you?”

eddie laughs a little crazy-like, “… that,” he says pointing to you, “is my wife… and i’m sure you don’t know this or maybe your marbles are a little rattled up there with the cobwebs, but..” he jumps from the stage in a dramatic flare, wet hair bouncing behind him, skin slicked in sweat.

he tossing the mic behind him, standing tall and flicking the brim of the guys hat, toe to toe. “i’m not afraid to kill a man.”

“you’re bluffin’,”

“wouldn’t be my first, and for her,” he says moving you behind him, “won’t be my last,”

AWW 😭 I imagine you’re Eddie or Robin or Steve or Jonathan’s puppygirl and they don’t know if they can leave you alone at first, so whenever they have to go to work they drop you off!! Joyce is totally down to hang out all day, and she looooves snuggling up with you as much as you do, she’ll flop down on the couch with a blanket held out in her hands and when you face-plant into her chest she wraps it around you and tucks you into a little hybrid burrito :’)) she’ll pick up a habit of snuggling her nose into your cheek from how much you nuzzle her, and she’ll trade off your sweet licks up her cheek for a kiss on your nose, and a fond scratch to your ear. Season 2 finale!

1.) Mike is so angry at Hopper

2.) I’m with Hopper and also he puts up with a lot and just hugs Mike.

3.) Lucas and Dustin hug El ❤️ and El notices Dustin’s teeth but ignores Max to hug Joyce and I am sad about that! I forgot how eager Max is for friends!!!!

4.) I forgot the gate got huge

5.) Karen is reading a romance novel in a bubble bath. I’m guessing she’s literally never had romance.

7.) rolling my eyes at Billy hitting on Karen so hard. Karen you can do better. Maybe. Barely.

29.) Steve and co light the demo dogs about the same time that the mind flayer leaves will

31.) mike falls behind and is caught by a vine

32.) Steve kills the vine

33.) Dustin recognizes dart and gives him a three musketeer bar to get them past

34.) Steve gets the kids out of the tunnel first until it’s just him and dustin and he lifts Dustin so he’s not in the way of the demodogs

35.) the cgi is better this season mostly because they’ve given up on making every gateway look like placenta

36.) hopper is so worried about Jane. His daughter is levitating and then just drops

37.) one month later the lab is shut down and Murray watches them go

38.) hop meets with Murray at the bar that I’m pretty sure is the bar from season 1 where he asked about the guy who found the ‘body’

39.) hopper gets the birth certificate and gets permission for el to go to a dance ❤️❤️❤️❤️

40.) kids getting ready for dance montage is so cute

41.) kitten!!!! And also Steve drives Dustin. I forgot how cute this is. I love big brother Steve. But also him sadly looking at Steve is so sad. He then drove off.

42.) I just realized that unless I missed it, Nancy doesn’t actually admit she slept with Jonathan this season

43.) will leaves enough room for Jesus in his dance

44.) Dustin really tries but gets shot down hardddddd. In their defense ‘shall we’ is kind of odd as an approach

45.) I do love that Nancy dances with Dustin.

46.) Hopper and Joyce sharing a cigarette in the parking lot is cute af. Hopper is good at comforting tho

47.) I can’t feel super great about the any kids kissing when I know that Max’s first kiss was also her actress’ first kiss as well. And that’s rough.

Final thoughts on season 2:

Cgi improved mostly because art direction on it shifted slightly. Audio balancing is better but not by much. Pacing is still kind of all over the place and we get a lot of times where we go multiple episodes without touching on one of the like 6 plots of the season. The most jarring and controversial one being Kali, who does show up like 5 times in the season technically but most are flashbacks. This is made worse by her never showing up in the show again as far as I know. There are also things there are just kind of dropped without warning or explanation. Like El’s knowledge and experience seem to vary wildly depending on what the scene needs.

And on interpersonal drama, I know it’s petty but Steve and Nancy don’t ever actually ever have a real conversation about their relationship in the show. Jonathan’s love of photography all but disappeared this season. The Byers dog is gone. The town mentions that Barb died from the leak but like, 8 people went missing last season. It wouldn’t have been hard to mention multiple people, including tragically high schooler Barbara Holland. Like this is one of a ton of shows where I’m not sure they have a continuity person on staff.

It’s a fun season to watch and the ads were slightly less egregious (kfc sad family dinner still terrible) but the Duffer Brothers still licked their way into this one over anything else.
