Day 18 (a day late so we’ll get two before the end of the day) Intro Womanism 101 - . . . I’ve talked a bit about how Dr. Katie G. Canon offered that for black women, the sacred must be found in other spaces outside of our religious traditional holy text, especially because these texts often make us invisible and do a major disservice to our humanity, our femininity, our spirit, our wholeness, and in telling the full story of God’s love for us. But there are other works, usually written or created by other #blackWomen that give us the kind of liberty that the Bible calls “Free Indeed.” For me, my first introduction to the sacred in what would be considered “secular” was an episode of #DifferentWorld called #MammyDearest.” I was a young black girl in Sandusky, Ohio - usually the only or one of the only black girls in my class, and while my family and church community was very black (intentionally) I was still a black girl in a very white world. Then this episode changed everything. #NikkiGiovanni changed everything. Kimberly Reese (a character who was just an average black girl from Ohio) changed everything. I cry every time I see this episode. I was never the same. I will never be the same. .... How many sermons can you name that changed you forever. In a lifetime of church I can make 6. In a lifetime. But there is a sermon in this episode and so many other #Womanist texts that transform me just like the Holy Ghost! ....
