Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 40 - Green Jacket

Mamoru's Green Jacket in the original Anime was definitely a choice (some of his other iconic outfits can be found in this post by @fukufashion - thank you @iiyasbssmdoodles for finding it!). It is clear that it was not a favorite of Usagi's, and below stories give us some fun takes on that.

the green unseen - chapter 2

When I wrote this fic last year, it was intended to be an open-ended speculative piece, one that wouldn't continue linearly if it continued at all. I didn't have follow-ups planned, but as these things go, they decided to show up anyway.

So here is chapter 2, which takes place immediately following chapter 1.

This fic takes place within my #mamoru in college Tumblr series, so do check that out also =)

Chapter length: ~1800 words

Chapter summary: What if that "ugly green jacket" was suddenly the knife's edge upon which your existence rested? What if the fact that it was green meant the difference between life and death?

A little fanalyzing chapter note beneath the jump.

I'm not sure if it came through very well, but I wanted to echo that scene in the anime where Usagi was crying in the phone booth after Mamoru broke up with her. =~( Though their situations are a bit different—she was devastated by heartbreak whereas he is devastated by fear—at the heart of it, it is the loss of each other that crushes them.

Also, for Usagi, who loves so openly, I could see rejection being the thing that cuts her deepest. For Mamoru, with his overwhelming sense of duty (and, I think, a need to prove his worth), I think failure would cut even deeper than rejection.

I'd love to hear what people think of this speculative experiment of mine!

I did this because I wanted to give appreciation to all sides of Mamoru Chiba. For as much as I may criticize the 90s anime, that Mamoru is equally as likeable and charming as manga/crystal. Plus manga Mamo isn't perfect either. Cuz where 90s Mamo is a little cold to Usa sometimes and doesn't always make the best decisions, Manga Mamo has incredibly low self esteem and keeps things from Usa so she isn't worried. They've both got their strengths and weaknesses!

TLDR: I love Mamoru Chiba a totally normal amount.

Sailor Moon is my first fandom and I've been active in it since around 1995/96. I've probably been sharing fanart and fic for just as long, much to my dismay when moving fic from ff.net to AO3.

What type(s) of creative works do you usually make? (fanfics, digital art, cosplay)

Digital art with the very occasional fic.

What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?

Everyone gets the in jokes, I don't have to explain why I draw green jackets on screencaps (hi I'm @mamorusgreenjacket).

Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?

I'm actually not a shipper (though I have preferences), the majority of my pairing pieces are gifts or project work.

What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?

They best fit the concept of what has inspired me or someone asked for it.

Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?

First rule about WIPs, we do not discuss how may WIPs! Second rule about WIPs, no really I have to use a management program for my projects and ideas I don't want to forget. ;-;

Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?

Simple art and one shots, but I'm pushing myself to do more intricate drawings with backgrounds. I've had this multi-chapter UsaMamo yakuza fic outlined in my drafts for years.

Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?

SPARKLES. Also a lot of orange and pink circle backgrounds because I hate drawing backgrounds. :< For fic it's usually comedy and angst centered around a singular idea.

Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?

There are so many traditional arts and craft work I would love to do, but then my home would turn into a craft warehouse.

This week’s post is about bringing Shitennou back into the fold of the team. I wish that had happened in the manga / anime and am a little disappointed we did not get that in Cosmos. BUT that is what fanfiction is for! (To help us collectively right the wrongs / misses in original materials).

Mamoru has been keeping a secret from Usagi, something that she takes in stride and decides that a beach-day together with the girls would be the best way to get everything out in the open and see how it could all work. This fic has art by @mochibuni!

You know maybe this will make more sense when I get further in but givin Mamoru amnesia about his fighting abilities for 20 odd episodes. And then also giving him the same quest of finding the silver crystal just raises more questions.

Because like in the first episode he's for some reason he is walking around Osa-P. Which doesn't entirely make sense considering he doesn't know about the crystal at this point and probably shouldn't be looking for it because he doesn't even know he's transforming right now.

And yet they kept that same scene for his intro to Usagi.

Along with keeping Usagi's now unneceessary comment about him being a weirdo. Whcih doesn't make sense because he's running around in that green jacket we see constantly without the series

All I can think is they were maybe not honestly thinking they would have to deal with Mamoru constantly being around. Or maybe they came up with the amnesia plot last minute (which why? You didn't need that).

And it makes things really weird in earlier episodes

Meeting Kunihiko Ikuhara, one of the directors of Sailor Moon in the 1990s.

The first anime convention I went to was Anime Central 2000. I was fortunate enough to meet Kunihiko Ikuhara at this convention. He directed the R Movie, and assisted with seasons: R, S, and SuperS before leaving TOEI.

He was promoting Shoujo Kakumi Utena with Chiho Saito, so a majority of the panel focused on questions about the show. At the time, only 13 episodes were out on DVD in the US. I remember a fan asking why Akio had a red car. Ikuhara responded that was the car he wanted at the time so he put it in the anime.

Now keep in mind, I am trying to remember a panel I attended some 23 years ago. I also remember when he had a silly scene to direct he would talk to animals and when it was serious, he would talk to people.

The pictures below are also 23 years old and the quality is not ideal but it works!

Flashforward to Anime 2002. I ran into him by complete chance with one of my besties. And he let us take a picture together! My only regret is that we were doing Clamp cosplay and not Utena that day. Or of course Sailor Moon.

Ugly Green Jacket

Usagi can't take it anymore! Something must be done! The time has finally come for the end of the hideous green monster.

This is one of my earliest fics, first posted on FFN in 2008. It is as close to a crack fic as I think I've ever gotten. Without spoiling too much, I HATED Mamoru's wardrobe in the original anime. I thought nearly everything he wore was inexcusably corny (except the tux, of course), and this story was born out of that frustration. Before this story begins- before I start posting my FFN works on this site- I will admit that of all the characters I write in fanfic, Usagi is the one I have the hardest time keeping in character. When I try to reach Naoko Takeuchi's unique blend of earnestly hopeful naivety, reluctant heroics, and healthy dash of lazy brattyness, I miss the mark. Usagi in canon has a distinct charm that try as I might, I fail at, and the harder I try to match Takeuchi's version, the less sincere and more snarky it comes across in my writing, which is absolutely not my intent. I adore Usagi in canon, but I know when to admit defeat, so I embraced my version of her, with the understanding that she isn't very canon compliant in my Sailor Moon fics.
