Just a random idea I had: What if Kanaya's vampire/rainbow-drinker dealio were modeled after a manananggal instead of the pop-culture vampire? It would definitely be a pretty ironic twist as manananggal tend to target infants (and generally represent opposition to the family unit and reproduction).

It's an affliction she would have to reconcile with 1) having a lusus that is a mother grub who renounced her title, 2) the actions of her ancestor in protecting and raising a young troll, as well as 3) how she was tasked with being in charge of the matriorb. It would really be a testament to her infallible self-control.

Getting blasted would conveniently be the push she needed to finally give in to the transformation/separation from her lower half.
