Mancake

Dongiovanni Matteo was a wealthy child, growing up in a life of luxury with his older sister Luccia. His parents were an arranged marriage: his father a lord, and his mother a highly sought after courtesan from Wano. His father loved his mother with every beating fibre in his soul, his mother... She tolerated him. Tolerated the lot of them.

Not a scrap of love was found in that hollow shell of a woman. Not for her husband, not for her daughter, and least of all for her son.

When Matteo's father took ill, they never expected him to live past his third month of disease. All that was found in his breath was how truly much he loved his wife: who would scowl, scoff, and turn from his side with her arms folded. There was no warmth in her face, no sorrow in her mourning, and no love. Never, love.

Once he passed, Matteo's mother sold off the estate to the highest bidder and fled back home to her country: leaving her two children to fend for themselves. Their governess took pity on them: taught them to survive by foraging for food, swindling sailors, and teaching them charm.

Luccia did not enjoy this, taught herself how to hunt for food, and use feats of strength to best challengers, rather than rely on charisma and charm. Matteo thrived: using his experience as a talented musician to busk for his dinner.

Sleeping on roadsides did little for their elderly governess, her body becoming rapidly more frail the longer they were left without lodgings. One morning, the two teenagers woke, and the governess remained sleeping in her eternal rest.

With their last tie to their country now perishing, they booked passage as deck-hand and entertainer aboard a pirate vessel until they had enough Berry to finance their own. With Luccia as their captain, they grappled and claimed a crew of flittering outcasts with skills all on their own. Although Matteo had no sailing skills, nor any desire to learn them, his charming silver tongue always spoke them away from worries.

No matter how long, how far, how many interesting folk he often shared nights with: Matteo swore off love. His free-spirit refused to be contained in a single relationship, and his fear of love and what it did to his father promoted him to stamp out each rising ember of love. Matteo is gone in the morning, waiting until his trysts are sleeping to sneak out: with a pep in his step, whistle on his lips, and story to tell his sister on the way home to his ship.

And then there was Pancake.

Pancake, who's silence was refreshing in the portraiture Matteo would paint in the air with his melody. Pancake, who was a whole two feet taller than him, and could rip him apart but withholds their hands, teeth and claws. Pancake, who, as they lay sleeping behind him, shrouded him in the lengthy flesh-like hair and held him secure completely. Pancake, who's toothy grin had Matteo strive to seek it out more.

Pancake, who heated his heart to pulse his love rather than lust. And once Matteo was in love? He had to fight first the urge to flee from it, fight the urge to scream at it, and fight the desire to accuse Pancake of something they truly never did to distance himself from them. But he couldn't.

When Pancake shifted in their rest, nuzzling into his tattooed neck and held him completely: body and soul, all Matteo could do was hide his rising emotion in soundless sobs and soft tearfalls. He was in love. The one thing that he truly feared.

But once that fear was overcome? There was nothing that could keep Matteo away from Pancake. Not his crew, not his captain - who is actually quite thankful to see him chase Pancake rather than leaving a trail of broken hearts.

He hopes that the Council Pirates needs a musician, for that's the one position he's confident he'd be able to fill.

Snippet of the script reading at the Dan Vs. 2012 Comic Con panel I think about a lot. Curtis Armstrong was preoccupied with the American Dad panel, so John DiMaggio is filling in for him in the role of Dan. I wanted to share this bit where Chris is revealed to be a Strawberry Shortcake fan and calls himself a mancake, parodying the ongoing rise of bronies at the time.

If you haven't ever watched these, I at least recommend the script reading!
