Marble is a metamorphic rock that developed from limestone. Most of the material is calcite and dolomite. It is often used for sculpture, as a building material, and for many other purposes. The word ‘marble’ is also used for other stones that can be polished well and for ball-shaped objects used for child games. Marble has been used in construction for thousands of years. It was widely used by Greek and Roman sculptors and architects.
In the construction trade, the term “marble” is used for any massive, crystalline calcite rock useful as building stone. Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Marble is typically not foliated, although there are exceptions. In geology, the term “marble” refers to metamorphosed limestone, but its use in stonemasonry more broadly encompasses un-metamorphosed limestone.

MARBLE THE EXTRAORDINARY BEAUTY OF NATURE
You’re facing the same conundrum that so many marble-loving homeowners have wrestled with: you love marble, but is it really worth the care and maintenance to keep it looking beautiful year after year?
Compared to other natural stones like granite and quartzite, marble is a relatively soft stone. It can etch if spills aren’t cleaned up right away, and it naturally develops a patina, or change in color due to oxidation, over time. This is one of the reasons manufacturers are developing engineered surfaces that resemble marble—some people simply don’t want to stress out every time a dinner guest puts their wine glass down without a coaster. But if you’re in love with the classic look of marble, there’s simply no alternative quite as beautiful as the real thing.
We’re here to put your mind at ease, and give you 5 solid reasons why you should make the commitment to a real marble countertop.
It can be sealed to add stain protection
One of the main concerns that homeowners have about choosing real marble for kitchen countertops is that will stain. While marble can be more susceptible to stains or etches from acidic foods and beverages, there are precautions that can be taken to help avoid this. Your countertop fabricator can ward off stains by applying an impregnating sealer that fills the pores just below the stone’s surface to slow the absorption of liquids, allowing more time to clean up spills. Today’s sealers are highly effective at preventing staining, without altering the look of the stone itself.
While no sealer can prevent etching, which is a dulling of the stone when it comes into contact with acidic materials, a high-quality sealer can go a long way in shielding your new marble from stains for years, or even decades. Ask your fabricator if they offer a multi-year stain warranty to help put your mind at ease.
Honed marble is just as gorgeous as polished, and you won’t have to worry about etching nearly as much. Honed marble has a more matte surface finish, meaning any dullness that may occur from a rogue lemon slice will be much less noticeable than it would be on a highly polished surface. Honed marble has a soft, satin finish rather than a glossy shine – a look that many homeowners actually prefer.
Some homeowners choose to install manufactured quartz countertops that look like marble products, which can be made to mimic natural stones like marble, believing that they will be easier to maintain. While an engineered material might be lower maintenance than marble, it will never have the same depth, unique patterns, and range of colors as natural stone.
Plus, when you install a true marble countertop or vanity, you have the opportunity to select a 100% unique slab. No other kitchen will have the exact same veining and characteristics that you have in yours.
If you’re a baker, you’ll be happy to learn that marble is one of the most heat resistant stones out there, and is much more heat resistant than a common competitor – resin-based engineered quartz. This quality makes marble a popular choice for fireplace surrounds as well as counters, islands, and vanities.
Natural stone increases the value of your home.
Stone countertops will increase the value of your home and appeal to potential buyers, if and when you’re ready to sell. Updated countertops made of natural stone are aesthetically beautiful and show that you’ve invested and cared for your home.
Talk to your countertop fabricator before you make a final decision. Most will be more than happy to give you a sample of the marble color you’re eyeing so you can take it home for a field test. Pour some lemonade on it, leave a coffee ring, drop a tomato slice – put your sample to the test to see how it reacts. Better yet, try a sample of both polished and honed marble to see the difference in performance.
Every homeowner should take their time to make sure they’re choosing a material that’s perfect for both their lifestyle and aesthetic. A Natural Stone Institute Accredited fabricator would be happy to answer any questions you might have about marble or any other stone material so you can feel confident in your final decision.
Anyone who’s ever watched Fredrik Eklund ooh and over a slab of it on Million Dollar Listing knows that Carrara Marble Obsession is a real thing. For almost a decade now, we’ve seen all kinds of kitchen countertops—Formica, laminate, granite—enthusiastically ripped up and replaced by the shiny white stone with subtle gray veining. But lately, interior designers are looking beyond the ubiquitous material and its siblings, Statuary and Calacatta Gold.
“While there’s nothing wrong with these marbles per se, there’s a tremendous breadth of expressive varieties out there that can add a significant amount of dynamism and personality to your project if you’re willing to think outside the box,” says Kevin Greenberg, founder of Space

Granite is a natural stone that is quarried in many countries around the globe. Granite and Quartzite are the names that are used interchangeably wherever stone tile and slabs are sold. True Granite is a porous, igneous rock that has any number of chemical compositions that include a quartz base. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that has a higher percentage of quartz in its chemical makeup than granite does.
For the record, true quartzite is harder than true granite. But, don’t get too caught up in the name of the stone because regardless of which it is, geologically speaking, it has the same purpose and durability.
White Granite is harder to find than black or brown granite. All granite gets its name from the background color. Some white granite slabs have veins similar to marble while others may have a spattering of freckles in either brown, grey, black or red and may include a sprinkling of blue throughout.
Bhandari Marble Group classic granite products are available in all colors, all shapes, and finishing. Granite for all projects and other stones are also available. We deal in Granite which includes tiles, floor designs, flooring, images, India, prices, statues, suppliers, stones, etc.
Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive igneous rock that is granular and phaneritic in texture. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray in color, depending on their mineralogy. The word granite comes from the Latin geranium, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a completely crystalline rock. Strictly speaking, granite is an igneous rock with between 20% and 60% quartz by volume, and at least 35% of the total feldspar consisting of alkali feldspar, although commonly the term granite is used to refer to a wider range of coarse-grained igneous rocks containing quartz and feldspar.

India possesses a wide spectrum of dimensional stones that include granite, marble, sandstone, limestone, slate, and quartzite, in various parts of the country. The Indian stone industry has evolved into the production and manufacturing of blocks, flooring slabs, structural slabs, monuments, tombstones, sculptures, cobbles, pebbles, and landscape garden stones.
India’s history, dating back to 3200 BC has been influenced considerably by the disposition, development, and use of stones and other construction materials. Dimension stones have also left deep imprints on the architectural heritage of the country. Innumerable temples, forts, and palaces of Ancient Indian Civilization have been carved out of locally available stones. The Taj Mahal at Agra was constructed from Indian marble. Some of the rock-cut structures include Khajuraho Temple, Elephanta Caves, and Konark Temple. Besides, all major archeological excavations have revealed exquisitely carved statuettes and carvings in stone. Ancient Buddhist monuments like the Sanchi Stupa of 3rd century BC have also been carved out of stone.
This tradition of Stone Architecture has continued to the present era, with most of the important modern buildings in India like the Presidential House, Parliament House, and Supreme Court made from high-quality sandstone of Rajasthan. The Baha’i House of Worship of New Delhi stands testimony to the relevance of marble in modern Indian architecture.
Stones are still the mainstays of civil construction in India, with stones being used extensively in public buildings, hotels, and temples. It is increasingly being used in homes, with the use of stones now penetrating amongst the growing middle class of India.
The success of the commercial stone industry solely depends upon defects in rock stone. Natural defects in ornamental commercial rock deposits adversely affect the quality of rock deposits. Detection of natural defects in the decorative and dimensional stone industry plays a vital role in the quality assessment.
BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP
India is a pioneer in the exploration, mining of commercial rock deposits, and in establishing a firm base for the stone industry. India, with an estimated resource of about 1,690 million cu m, comprising over 160 shades of Dimension Stone Granites DSG, accounts for about 205 of the world resources. Commercially viable granite and other rock deposits are reported from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and others.

Granite and Quartzite are the names that are used interchangeably wherever stone tile and slabs are sold.
– True Granite is a porous, igneous rock that has any number of chemical compositions that include a quartz base.
– Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that has a higher percentage of quartz in its chemical makeup than granite does.
India possesses a wide spectrum of dimensional stones that include granite, marble, sandstone, limestone, slate, and quartzite, spread out all over the country. India is also amongst the largest producer of raw stone material and the sectors are quite developed and vibrant in the South, as well as in Rajasthan and Gujarat, with a dedicated resource of entrepreneurs. India also has an indigenous resource of machinery and tool manufacturers that cater well to the demands of this sector.
The Indian stone industry has evolved into the production and manufacturing of blocks, flooring slabs, structural slabs, calibrated – ready to fix tiles, monuments, tombstones, sculptures, artifacts, cobbles, cubes, curbs, pebbles, and landscape garden stones.
Tradition of stones
The success of the commercial stone industry solely depends upon defects in rock/stone. Natural defects in ornamental/commercial rock deposits adversely affect the quality of rock deposits. Detection of natural defects in the decorative and dimensional stone industry plays a vital role in the quality assessment.
India is a pioneer in the exploration, mining of commercial rock deposits, and in establishing a firm base for the stone industry. India, with an estimated resource of about 1,690 million cu m, comprising over 160 shades of Dimension Stone Granites (DSG), accounts for about 205 of the world resources. Of the 300 varieties being traded in the world market, nearly half of them are from India. Commercially viable granite and other rock deposits are reported from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and others.
Marble
Marble was used for building tombs, temples, and palaces. For a long [weasel words] time it was considered as Royal Stone. It is, however, now used in hotels and homes too. There are many varieties.

Andhi Marble
Located near the capital city of the state of Jaipur (also known as the ‘Pink City’), it is dolomitic marble with intrusions of tremolite and is commonly known by the name of pista (pistachio) marble, because of the green-colored tremolite against an off-white background. Most of the mining of this famous field is now banned by the Supreme Court of India because of the vicinity of the area to the Sariska Tiger Reserve.
Slumber Marble

Bidasar

India is among the leading countries when it comes to mining and export of sandstone. Few most popular sandstone products from India include names like Tint Mint, White Mint, Mint Fossils, Modak, Agra Red, Rainbow Sandstone, Raj Green, Teak, Buff Brown, Dholpur Chocolate, Beige, Dholpur Pink, Lalitpur Pink, Mandana Red, Jodhpur pink, Jodhpur red, Jaisalmer yellow, etc.

Yo PLEASE do a fake date for holiday gathering for tyrus! PLEASE
Cyrus held his breath as the phone rang, praying for TJ to pick up. With a light crackle on the line, TJ’s answered the call.“Hey, Underdog! What’s up?” TJ greeted brightly, and Cyrus could hear him flipping through the pages of a book.“Oh, I’m sorry! Did I interrupt? I’ll just call ba-”“Cyrus. What’s going on? It’s fine, I swear.”“…Fine. I need a favor,” Cyrus admitted.“Oooh, what kind of favor?” TJ asked excitedly, sitting up in bed.“Oh, I wouldn’t get so excited.”
“Remind me again why I’m doing this?” TJ asked, standing in front of Cyrus’s mirror. Cyrus stood behind him, rising onto his tiptoes to rest his chin on TJ’s shoulder.“Because Goodman New Years bashes are pretty much Great Gatsby level. We go all out, and then some. And if I don’t show up with a date this year, I might be disowned, then banned from all of our parties.”“How big is this going to be, exactly? Bigger than your Bash-Mitzvah?” TJ asked, adjusting his dark blue button down and champagne colored suit jacket. He’d ditched his contacts a few weeks before, and was donning un-gelled hair and black-rimmed glasses.“Much, much bigger,” Cyrus assured him. His outfit nearly matched TJ’s; they were both in navy blue shirts and no ties, but Cyrus’s suit was gray, not the color of sparkling champagne. “We’re talking major blowout. It’s Roaring 20s themed, since we’re ringing in 2020. Did you not hear the Great Gatsby reference?”“You were serious about that?!”“As a heart attack,” Cyrus replied. “It is legitimately insane. I’ve been going to them since I was 10, but I think my being nearly 16 officially requires a date.”“That’s ridiculous!” TJ laughed. “Why?!”“That’s just how these parties are. Alright, come on. We’re gonna be late.”“But it’s like 4:30!”“And we have to meet my parents there at 5!” Cyrus insisted, pulling him down the stairs and into his car.“So this is a seven hour party?” TJ asked, causing Cyrus to giggle slightly.“No, no no. The party doesn’t start until 8,  and people don’t usually leave until about 4 or 5 in the morning,” he responded. “I know it sounds like a lot, but it’s really really fun. One year people didn’t leave until 9:30 in the morning. My parents and I always stay up until like 7 and then sleep at the mansion, which you’ll have to do also. You know, hence me telling you to pack a bag.”“You so owe me. Where is this party, anyway?”“You know the Shadyside bowling alley?”“Yes?”“Yeah, it’s not there,” Cyrus laughed. It’s in the Hudson Mansion about 20 miles out of town.“ TJ stopped scrolling through his phone abruptly, turning to face Cyrus. The Hudson Mansion was the most coveted (not to mention expensive) party venue in the American midwest. It was a four-story white building spanning nearly 275,000 square feet, excluding the huge patio behind it. The patio sported a fountain in the center, and was about 50,000 square feet, overlooking a dramatic hill of grass that led to a pond about as large as the patio itself.Needless to say, everything about the Hudson Mansion was larger than anyone should ever need unless in need of a space to house all of France. It was decorated extravagantly, and looked like a scene torn directly from a movie."You guys got the Hudson Mansion?!”“Every year,” Cyrus said with a nod, eyes trained on the road. “All four of my parents are really great so they’re very highly paid, and we have a deal with the owners for like 30 or 40 percent off because we rent it annually.”“That’s one hell of a deal,” TJ chuckled, glancing at Cyrus. He was focused on the road, one hand on the wheel as he drove. The other was resting on his gear shift, lying maddeningly close to TJ’s.“Well, my parents are very interesting, and very stubborn, people,” Cyrus agreed, nodding. His glasses slid slightly down the bridge of his nose as he did, and TJ instinctively moved to push them back up with a small smile.“Sorry, pet peeve.”“It’s all good,” Cyrus assured him. “I appreciate it.”He tore his eyes from the road in a rare moment, turning slightly to meet TJ’s eyes. As he did, TJ could swear he saw fireworks behind Cyrus’s head, outlining him in angelic white light that he knew wasn’t really there. It was suddenly all too clear whom he wanted to kiss at midnight, and the thought of pulling Cyrus into a warm, gentle kiss as they rang in the new year terrified him to no end.
They were among only a few other cars when they pulled into the parking lot of the Hudson Mansion, thus guaranteeing them a perfect parking spot. “You ready for this?” Cyrus asked, unbuckling his seatbelt and sliding from the car.“Given the way you talked it up, not a chance in hell,” TJ laughed, taking Cyrus’s hand to step out of the car.“You’ll do great, Teej. Don’t worry about it.” Cyrus looped his arm through TJ’s, taking a deep breath before making their way up the long path toward the mansion. TJ opened the door for Cyrus, who followed him inside with a marveling gasp. They walked into a massive ballroom with marble floors and white walls, decorated in white, navy blue, and gold. The party hadn’t started yet, but servers and various staff were rushing about to finish preparing.“This is one hell of a Roaring 20s party. Are Buffy and Andi coming to this thing too? Who are they bringing?” TJ asked.“Yeah, they always come! They’re coming together, as per usual.”“They’re together?”“Nah, they come as friends every year. I used to be part of their singles group, but then a few weeks ago, I was not so subtly reminded by my Aunt Helen that I’d yet to bring a girlfriend to one of these. I got the hint pretty quickly.”“Cyrus! Over here!” Cyrus’s mom called from where she’d been speaking with the caterer frantically. He and TJ quickly made their way toward her, TJ still marveling at the decor around them. There were fountains of chocolate, buckets of ice holding champagne on every table, and a large space for a band, as well as another for a DJ.“God, they were planning on pushing all the hors-d'oeuvres at once, can you imagine?” Leslie said, turning to the boys. “Oh! Hi,TJ. Did I know you were coming? Cyrus, did we put him at your table with Andi and Buffy? Gosh, I hope so!”“Mom, TJ’s my plus one. He’s my boyfriend.”“Oh. Oh! I’m so sorry, my head is just a bit messy on New Year’s Eve. It’s lovely to see you again, TJ.”“And you, Mrs. Goodman. This party is incredible,” TJ gushed, looking around.“Oh, thank you! I think we’ve outdone ourselves this year, but then again, it is a Roaring 20s party.”“I think it’s absolutely beautiful,” TJ replied, to Leslie’s delight.“Mom, is there anything you need, or can I show TJ around the mansion?”“Of course, of course. Is he staying the night?”“Yeah, we only brought my car.”“Alright, you two can stay in the third floor master bedroom, Sharon, Frank, Norman and I will stay in the two on the fourth floor. Andi and Buffy can pick their two rooms.”“Got it. What room’s ours again? Sorry, that was a lot of information,” Cyrus chuckled.“Third floor master. But no funny business, got it?”“MOM! We’re leaving now!” Cyrus shrieked, pulling TJ toward an elevator on the left side of the room.“C'mon, I’ll bring you up to our room so we can drop off our bags. Then I’ll show you around,” he said, stepping into the elevator and pushing the third button. They stepped out after a moment, and Cyrus tugged him down the hall to the very end. “Sorry about my mom.”“It’s fine, Underdo… Whoa,” TJ trailed off as Cyrus pushed the heavy double doors open to reveal an expansive bedroom, a king bed dressed in pale pink bedding and silk sheets and pillowcases in the center. “I’m sorry, what the hell kind of bed is that? It’s like 9 feet long!”“It’s an Alaskan king,” Cyrus laughed, plopping his bag on the bed. “All six bedrooms have either one Alaskan or two California kings. Well, the three masters have one Alaskan, and the other three have two Californias. Oh, I hope you don’t mind sharing a bed! If you do, you’re welcome to a different room, it’s only us, my parents, Buffy and Andi.”“This place is insane! And no, it’s fine. Plus I feel like switching rooms might raise a few eyebrows.”“Fair enough. Not to mention the fact that like four of us could sprawl out on this thing without touching,” Cyrus said. “What exactly do we do with the next three hours?”“Well, after your tour, I was thinking we could go up to the roof and watch the stars come out over the pond? It’s really pretty, and I try to catch it every year.” TJ smiled, reaching forward to take Cyrus’s hand.“I think I’d like that.”
“Alright, let’s start on the first floor,” Cyrus said, pulling him out of the elevator and across the ballroom.“Where to?” TJ asked, following Cyrus toward large white double doors.“The kitchen,” Cyrus said, pushing through the doors to reveal an expanse of marble countertop and stainless steel.“Where are all the servers?” TJ asked, glancing around.“Other kitchen,” Cyrus mumbled, opening the fridge and shoving things aside in a vain search.“Ignoring the fact that this place has more than one kitchen, what are you looking for?”“There’s usually… Ha! Here you go!” he chirped, sliding TJ a can of ginger ale across the marble island.“Thanks, Goodman,” TJ said, looking around the kitchen as he cracked the can open. “God, the things I could cook in here.”“You cook?”“Kind of, it’s a family tradition type thing. My mom’s side of the family is heavily Italian, and my dad’s is German, so Amber and I have some serious shoes to fill.”“Well yeah, naturally. There are sausages to be made, Kippen!”
“This is beautiful,” Cyrus breathed, looking out over the lake from the rooftop. It sparkled with the reflections with a thousand stars, and as TJ turned to face him, he saw the same stars dancing in Cyrus’s warm eyes.“…I’ve seen prettier,” he teased, watching Cyrus gasp.“Name three things prettier than this,” Cyrus challenged, turning to face him. TJ took a deep breath, before speaking.“Easy. Your eyes, your lips, you.” Without thinking, he surged forward and captured Cyrus in a kiss, melting against him after a moment.“…Thank you,” Cyrus said when they pulled apart.“Any time, Cy. So, not such a fake date after all, huh?”“I- um, would you want to be my boyfriend? For real, this time?”“I’d be honored, Goodman.”
TJ and Cyrus jumped away from their kisses when one of their phones buzzed. Cyrus huffed, pulling it out of his pocket.“Oh! Buffy and Andi are here! We should go get them,” he said, starting to stand up before being pulled back toward his boyfriend- God, he’d never get tired of calling TJ Kippen his boyfriend.“One more kiss?”“…Okay,” Cyrus conceded. He pulled TJ into one last kiss, before standing up. “Now we actually have to go, before they come looking for us. Does my hair look okay? Well, I mean, is it a mess now?”“Cyrus, I don’t know how to tell you this, but no amount of fixing that hair is going to prevent it from looking like we just made out on the roof. Unless we can stop by the bathroom?”“How about I tell them to meet us in our bathroom, then they can actually help us fix our hair? We clearly have no idea what the hell we’re doing and it’s not like they’ll tell anyone,” Cyrus offered.“Do they have any secret keeping skills whatsoever?”“They both kept my sexuality, not to mention their own, a secret for like two years!”“Good enough for me, let’s go.”Cyrus texted them to meet him in the third floor master bathroom as he and TJ walked toward the elevator, and they got it so quickly that both pairs stepped off elevators on opposite ends of the third floor simultaneously. Cyrus and TJ beat them there by about a couple of minutes, given the fact that the elevator they’d taken was next to their bedroom, whereas Andi and Buffy’s was by the library on the opposite side of the mansion. Thus, naturally, they passed the time wrapped in a careful kiss, Cyrus jumping backward onto the countertop to bridge their height difference.“Whoa, okay. it is too damn early for this,” Buffy huffed, shielding her eyes as she and Andi walked into the bathroom.“It’s like 8 pm,” Cyrus said, moving to the side so TJ could turn around and sit next to him on the cool surface of the counter.“Let me rephrase: it is always too early to walk in on my best friend and literal former rival making out in the bathroom,” Buffy huffed. “Since when are you two even together, anyway?”“…It’s a long story. Long story short, we need you to fix our hair so my dad doesn’t murder TJ,” Cyrus said. Andi and Buffy glanced at one another, shrugging, before turning back to Cyrus.“You’re lucky you’re our best friend.”
They stepped out of the elevator and into the ballroom as guests started to fill the room. TJ took Cyrus’s hand, and was led through a sea of sequined party dresses and champagne toward their table. After a few minutes, everyone had found their way to their respective tables, and all four of Cyrus’s parents had taken their places on the dance floor, each holding a glass of champagne. Cyrus quickly poured a glass for himself, TJ, Andi, and Buffy, who looked at him with raised eyebrows.“Oh, come on. Don’t actually drink it! It’s just for the toast, then we’ll switch to sparkling cider for the rest of the night,” Cyrus laughed, gesturing to the servers’ carts, each of which was adorned with at least one bottle of sparkling apple cider. “It’s just kind of customary to toast with champagne.”“This is such a weird party,” TJ whispered. “It’s just a series of rituals.”“I mean, fair enough,” Cyrus agreed, shrugging as his parents started talking.“Friends, family, we’re so excited to share this New Year’s Eve with you,” Leslie started.“We still can’t quite believe how long we’ve known many of you, or how old our son, Cyrus has gotten,” Norman continued, gesturing to Cyrus’s table.“But in any case, your friendship and company over the years has been invaluable,” Sharon said.“So, without further ado, a toast to the new year!” Frank exclaimed, holding his glass in the air.“May it be filled with love and happiness,” Leslie said.A chorus of ‘hear hear!’ rang through the crowd as each table toasted, a resounding clink of glass echoing across the ballroom.“What happens now?” TJ asked, setting his glass down and accepting one of sparkling cider with a grateful smile.“Now, we party!” Cyrus exclaimed, taking a sip of his cider before standing and offering TJ a hand.“And that constitutes…?” TJ asked, standing up and intertwining their fingers. Cyrus smiled mischievously, tugging his boyfriend onto the dance floor.“Lots of dancing.”
“Ten! Nine! Eight!” The crowd’s countdown to midnight rang loudly through the room, overtaking the band’s playing. TJ took Cyrus’s hand, turning to face him.“What are you doing?” Cyrus asked as the crowd counted down, now at four.“Kissing you,” TJ whispered, pulling Cyrus forward just as the crowd yelled a jubilant 'happy new year!’. As they kissed, silver balloons and confetti from God knows where rained down over them, marking the beginning of 2020.“Happy new year, Kippen,” Cyrus said, grinning when they pulled apart.“I think I’m going to like 2020 quite a lot.”

Fey University II
Title: Fey University
Requested by: @speaknoevi1
Rating: G
Original Imagine: Imagine the Iron Fey guys as typical college students.
Chapter 13: And Away We Go
Twenty minutes later you were in the passenger seat of Sage's black convertible. Robbie was sulking in the back, having been denied the privilege of riding shotgun. The sky was crystal clear and brilliantly blue as Sage cruised off campus and towards the lake. Ash had called shortly after you'd all piled into the car to let Sage know he'd meet up with everyone at the family's lake house. As far as anyone could tell, Rowan had not been made privy to the trip, and hopefully would be too hungover to make an appearance.
Cruising down the mostly empty side roads along the university with the sun shining and the wind in your hair, it was hard to really care what Rowan was up to. Especially when Robbie started singing "Life is a Highway" at the top of his lungs and Sage turned the radio on full volume in a vain attempt to drown him out. You tried to keep from laughing, but the combating sounds of Rob's spur of the moment solo and the radio blasting "Party in the USA" was just too much and you were almost in tears from laughing by the time Sage cruised up to the iron wrought gates that surrounded the lakeside housing community.
Rob had the broadest grin on his face as Sage flicked off the radio and turned to pin him with a steely look over the rims of his sunglasses.
"If you ever," the elder Tally said in a low voice, "Do that again, you'll be on the side of the road panhandling before you have time to blink."
"Aww, come on, man, that was a classic!" Rob said. "I was setting the mood for the road trip!"
"I hope you're prepared to walk back to campus, because that's where we currently stand on your method of transportation from here on out," Sage said, leaning over to a pinpad sitting just outside the gate and punching in a number. The lock on the gates snapped back, and the gate slid smoothly to one side to allow the car to glide through.
"You wouldn't abandon your brother's best friend on the side of a road, would you?" Rob asked with a simper in his voice, leaning forward between the seats to give Sage his best "have mercy" expression.
"Rowan has no friends."
"Well no shit. I meant Ashton."
Sage snorted inelegantly through his nose as he angled into the driveway of a four story mansion of a house backed right up to the edge of the lake and parked. You had to tilt your head back just to be able to glimpse the top floor, and even that started to hurt after a few seconds. A noticeable difference to the house, however, was its color. All the other homes around the lake were either a soothing light blue or unremarkable beige. A couple were a deep red that somehow still managed to compliment the other homes around it. The Tally family lake house was a striking, completely off-putting black. Or maybe it was brown, and having the sun behind it made it look black from this angle. You also noticed all the curtains inside were drawn-and black-and the front door was a solid slab of dark colored wood with no glass insets. Even the walkway up to the entrance was filled with dark gravel, whereas everyone else's walkways were either laiden with marble stepping stones, or filled with rounded white pebbles.
"Cheerful, isn't it?" Rob asked as he hopped out of the car and opened the passenger side door for you. "Very Addams family-esque, I'd say. Just minus the helpful disembodied hand and catchy theme song."
You caught Sage rolling his eyes as he tucked his sunglasses into the visor of his car and got out as well. The front door opened as you all started up the walkway, and Ash looked out at you, looking both tired but also relieved.
"You made it," he said, smiling as you came up the steps towards him.
"I mean, your brother almost drove off the road a couple times rubbernecking, but we're good," Rob joked.
Ash ignored him as he looked you over, and you had to resist the urge to raise an eyebrow until he'd finished his inspection.
"I'm fine," you say pointedly as he breathes a noticeable sigh of relief. "No bruises or contusions or lesions or anything. I don't even think I need therapy."
He gives you a slight smile, but you can still see an edge in his gray eyes as he moves to let you all step inside.
The inside of the house is surprisingly lighter than the outside, and the layout refreshingly open. The walls are a pristine white, and the carpets and upholstery on the furniture are a light ivory. Your mouth is hanging open by the time you reach the end of the front hallway and look around to see the enormous living area and open kitchen and dining areas. The countertops were all sparkling white marble, and a crystal chandelier hung at the top of the arched ceiling in the center of the living area. A winding staircase that led to both the upper and lower floors was tucked in the far corner. Two enormous full length windows on the opposite side of the living area looked right out over the lake, and the French doors just beside it led out onto the back deck where you could just glimpse an immense hot tub.
Ash stood beside you with a slightly resigned look on his face as he took in your awestruck expression, and it occurred to you as you turned to him that he probably got this reaction a lot. And, on reflection, this was nothing new to him. This was just how he lived.
"Wow," you said, looking at him.
His smile is slightly tighter than seems normal, and he shrugs, looking uncomfortable. "It's a lot of space," he says, and you can tell he doesn't mean it as a good thing.
Now that he's said it, you realize how empty the place feels, even with the four of you standing in the same room. It would be much more suited for a party of at least a dozen people or more, which is probably just his mother does with it. This wasn't the kind of place you bought if you were looking to spend time with a small family. The thought made you sadder than you expected it to.
"It's pretty," you say sincerely, because you have no idea what else to say and you hate the look he has on his face.
His smile warms a little at that, and he gestures for you to follow him into the kitchen. Sage has perched himself on a barstool by one of the counters and is perusing on his phone. Rob has already helped himself to a large fruit platter that he clearly snagged out of the fridge. In between bites of apple and handfuls of grapes, he sucks down a bottle of apple juice. Go figure.
"Hungry?" Ash asks, gesturing to the fruit platter.
You shake your head, honestly too excited to even think of eating.
"I promise, I've had my rabies vaccine," Rob jokes, pushing the platter towards you, but you shake your head again.
"I want to go swimming," you say, unable to help the excitement in your voice.
Rob grins and Ash's smile deepens. Sage doesn't look up from his phone, but you think you see the corner of his mouth lift slightly.
"We can go on the boat in a bit," Ash promises, "But I think we're missing something."
You frown. "What?"
Ash smile morphs into a subtle smirk. "You bring a bathing suit?"
That brings you to a full stop as you realize you're back in your shirt and jeans from yesterday, and you do not, in fact, have anything like a bathing suit.
Ash's amused look makes you blush.
"I forgot," you mumble. Not like you owned a bathing suit anyway. You'd been packed and prepared for college but somehow swimming never factored in to your extracurriculars.
"Cool, looks like we're skinny dipping," Rob says with a mischievous grin. Ash throws him a dirty look that he snickers at.
"I'm having one picked up for you," Sage says from his barstool, still fixated on his phone screen.
You turn to him, startled. "You don't know my size," you say, and then-as a more frightening thought occurs to you-you add quickly, "And I am not wearing a bikini."

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Modern Farmhouse Tour
How wonderful it is to start a brand new week with you here, on Home Bunch. Thank you so very much for your presence!
I am happy to be featuring Liz Hackett of @lizhackettinteriors‘ newly-built home on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. Liz’s home feels airy and stress free and, as the years go by, I think we should make of our home a place that brings us peace. I feel that when my house is clean, uncluttered, and organized, my mind is calmer and I can think clearer. This home is exactly like that; a place anyone would feel better, not only because you’re so close to nature, but also because the house itself feels uncomplicated and that, my friends, is the approach that we should be aiming for.
Read on to know all details and make sure to pin your favorite interior ideas!
Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Modern Farmhouse Tour
Hello! My name is Liz and I live with my husband and 3 kids in Asheville, NC in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We built our modern farmhouse one year ago on a quiet wooded lot. My husband is a local home builder and I work in interior design. We designed and built this house together and have created a place we are happy to call home.
Home Ideas
“Our goal for this house was to incorporate the modern farmhouse aesthetic with both classic and modern details.”
Exterior Paint Color
The exterior body and trim is Benjamin Moore Classic Gray.
Porch flooring is Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray.
Home-Sweet-Home
“I wanted our home to feel comfortable, liveable and inviting.”
Windows
Windows are Mira by Plygem and are black metal clad exterior and wood interior.
Front Door
What a brave guardian dog! 🙂 The front door paint color is “Benjamin Moore Black”.
Foyer
Every part of this 3500 square foot house gets used daily and there are no wasted spaces. We gave a lot of thought to making sure that function and style were both foremost in the design.
Wall Paint Color
Paint on main walls of house beside shiplap are “Benjamin Moore Classic Gray”.
Farmhouse-inspired
The front porch and the foyer features 100+ year-old barnwood shiplap from Kentucky.
The chevron barn door (similar here) is painted in “Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray”.
Built-ins
Built-ins in front Hall are “Benjamin Moore HC 168 Chelsea Gray”.
Space
The house is 4 bedroom, master down, 3 1/2 baths plus a flex space between the first and second floor.
Kitchen
This is one of the most beautiful kitchens I have seen in a while. Beautiful white cabinets are complemented by real beams and shiplap walls.

Faucet: Champagne Bronze Delta Trinsic faucet.
Sink: Kohler.
Beams
Kitchen has four 100+-year-old wood beams that were reclaimed from an old tobacco barn in Kentucky.
Hardwood Flooring
Wood floors throughout the main house are 4″ white oak with a stain of 2 parts Early American and 1 part Classic Gray custom mix. Done in a satin water-based finish.
Beautiful Hardwood Flooring: here, here, here, here, here & here.

Arplis - News: Black Bathroom Design Inspiration
Take a peek at the design plan for our latest bathroom remodel: a black bathroom with wood vanity and gorgeous subway tile with splashes of marble! design by Studio McGee - Modern Lake House Project Black Bathroom Design Plan Last year when I began working on remodeling and design projects for clients, I discovered that it’s really what I love most. I love the challenge of seeing past the “before” and designing the “after” like this beautiful brick fireplace makeover and small bathroom renovation! I love being able to come into a space and create function and beauty while finding solutions that weren’t previously seen. This process is rewarding and fun, and I am grateful to begin this process for a few new projects throughout the rest of the year. We recently started demo on this family’s home, we will be remodeling three of their bathrooms and their laundry room. I want to show you the process along the way, starting with their guest bathroom design plan. This bathroom is the guest bathroom located near their kitchen and will be the primary bathroom for anyone visiting or stopping by. Whereas a master bathroom is typically more serene and dreamy, a powder or guest bath provides a little more room for fun! I have loved working with this family because they’ve been so flexible and trusting. They’ve really handed me the reins and let me have fun with the design, giving me a lot of creative control. I am not sure where along the way we decided that this bathroom should be black, but we’ve run with it! Since it is a guest bath, and serves mostly as a powder bath, we felt comfortable opting for a dark paint color on the walls. This black bathroom will be stunning once it is finished thanks to the millwork on the walls! I love seeing a bold paint color in a home, especially black, but I think a dark color really packs the best punch when used on millwork. There’s something so rich about a saturated color on beautiful paneling or shiplap. It’s the little details that really bring out the beauty of the color and create a well rounded design. Millwork Tip: For more of a farmhouse or laid back look, run your shiplap horizontal. For a more traditional look, run your shiplap (wood paneling) vertical. Black Bathroom Inspiration Here is the inspiration for the black bathroom design. On the left, Studio McGee’s beautiful design from their modern lake house project. I love the custom vanity made of marble with a floating wood shelf. The wallpaper is stunning and the vanity lights are truly show stoppers! On the right, a Rejuvination design, shows off a beautiful wood vanity with cool undertones and patterned tile flooring. Black Bathroom with Subway Tile Shower Inspiration While we’re going bold with the paint color, we wanted to keep things classic and light in the shower. This lovely marble shower inspiration is by Kristal Kelly Design. I love the shower system here!     By designing a black bathroom with white tile, we will keep the space from feeling overly dark! While we certainly could’ve opted for rich grays or dark tile, we’ve decided to go with a classic marble tile in the bathroom. Since this bathroom doesn’t have a window to provide natural light, I wanted to balance out the dark room with something light and timeless. If you’re on a budget, a black bathroom with white subway tile is also a beautiful combination! We will be going with 6x12 marble subway tile for the shower walls and 2” hexagon for the floors. I have used this marble in the past in my own home, and have been very happy with the quality and color of the marble. I typically opt for honed marble rather than polished because it provides a matte look. While polished marble can be very beautiful, I think honed is a bit more contemporary. If you use marble in your home, be sure to seal it with a high quality sealer! Read more about sealing marble.     After all of the tile work is completed, we will order the custom shower door which will be black framed to accent the black shower fixtures and walls! Black Bathroom Plumbing Selections The client really liked the look of a matte black shower system, and I think it will be beautiful in the shower in contrast to the marble tile. By opting for black plumbing, we’ve kept things very contemporary. If you wanted to go for more of a traditional look, I would suggest brass plumbing fixtures with traditional lines. In fact, the entire look of this bathroom would be completely different had we chosen more traditional plumbing and accessories! Custom Wood Vanity for the black bathroom Wood is one of my favorite materials to use in a design. Whether your style is very contemporary or very traditional, wood always looks good. This black bathroom will be complete with a custom wood vanity stained in a matte light finish with cool undertones. The vanity is made from white oak, which is one of the most beautiful woods to work with! If you’re hoping to use wood in a bathroom remodel, I suggest purchasing a high quality cabinet from a custom cabinet maker. Of course you can find nice pre-made options from Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, or Signature Hardware, but I really don’t suggest purchasing a wood grain vanity from a budget e-tailer. The wood finish is usually very cheap looking and I don’t think you’d be happy with it. Sometimes it is nice to purchase a pre-made wood vanity because the countertop and sink are handled for you, which can save you time and money. If you do opt for a pre-made vanity, look at the wood species (my favorite is oak) and if you can find something unfinished, that is great! Ask your painter to finish it for you. This gives you a chance to customize the stain to fit your exact design. To put it into perspective, you’ll usually spend anywhere from $2000-$6000 on a custom vanity depending on wood species, size, and intricacy of the design. While this certainly in the budget for every room, this can be a great place to splurge, and save on other materials like tile and accessories. Black Bathroom with Gold or Brass Details     To break up the black and to compliment the wood we’ve added gold (brass) accents throughout the space. Black, wood, and gold are a beautiful combination and you really can’t go wrong with it! I love this gold mirror which is the most beautiful shade of brass. I used it in my own guest bathroom remodel and in our last small bathroom remodel! Above the mirror, we’ll be using the Clemente sconce from Visual Comfort, and to say I am excited, is an understatement!!! It is a beautiful light fixture with soft brass detailing and gorgeous lines! Design Tip: If going with a bold design Element, utilize timeless finishes to create a nice balance. This also easily allows you to update the space as styles change! Lastly, we’ll be finishing off the bathroom with a mix of matte black and brass details. We’ve opted for black handles on the wood vanity, and a black handle for the toilet (it’s all in the details!). In order to make the towel hooks pop against the black walls, we will be adding brass towel hooks, a towel ring, and toilet paper holder. As I hit publish on this post, I am heading off to check the progress of this project! For details and updates, be sure to follow along on social media! I hope you enjoy seeing the finished product of this black bathroom design! Email Address SUBSCRIBE Thank you! #Interiors&Design

Dark Cedar Shaker Exterior
Hello, everyone! How are you today? I spent my morning doing some shopping-therapy and I am feeling pretty good.
Tumblr media
I will spend some time cleaning and lightly redecorating my house over the weekend. I always enjoy reinventing each space, sprucing it up with new pillows, new decorative objects… these small changes always make a huge difference and make us love our home even more.
Talking about loving a home, I have been waiting a long time to share this stunning home built by Petrucci Johnson Homes. This lakefront home grabs your attention the moment you see the beautiful dark Cedar shaker exterior. The interiors are equally impressive and I feel very lucky to be able to share this house tour with you today.
Take notes of the many details shared by the builder and make sure to follow them on Instagram. Since the builder didn’t have all the sources for the decor, I will be sharing similar options to help you achieve a similar look. I hope it helps.
Have a wonderful time, my friends!

“The living room is made for conversing and sharing while the family room is where you will find WiFi and a TV. Unlike the rest of the house where we painted all the wood trim, it has stained woodwork and stained plank wood ceiling.”
Paint color is Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal.
Recommended Sectionals: here, here, here & here.
Beautiful Ottomans: here, here & here.
Sunroom
“We placed the sunroom in the front of the house to take advantage of the tranquil lake views.”
Wall paint color is Sherwin Williams SW 7648 Big Chill.
Slipcovered Sofas: here, here, here & here.
Flooring
“We chose lighter shades of Celadon slate for the flooring. The distressed beams reflect driftwood. The limestone fireplace adds the needed warmth for those chilly evenings.”

Lake View
The sunroom has French doors that open the wrap-around front porch with great views of the lake. The sun filled sunporch is a pleasant place to enjoy your morning coffee.”
Sconces
Linen shades on the sconces add a soft glow to this foyer with custom wainscoting and arched doorway.
Sconces: Visual Comfort.
Staircase
“The spindles on the stairs have a simple classic Arts and Crafts line. We painted the spindles and newel posts and contrasted the handrail and staircase treads to match the wood stain on the plank flooring. We added bold colored Nautical flags to contrast the light palette.”
Master Bathroom
“The soaking tub is a nice place to relax, have a glass of wine and take in the view of the lake.”
Shower Floor Tile: here – similar.
Shower Wall Tile: here – similar.
Bathroom Cabinet
“We chose shaker style white cabinets with glass handles and plumbing fixtures for a classic spa feel. The tower separates the two sinks creating some distinction of space.”
Vanity is 122″ Long x 21″ Deep.
Faucets: Kohler.
Lighting: here.
Tile
“We used a ceramic tile that resembles wood planks on the floor and brought it 3 feet as a wainscoting up the wall to give a more intimate feel.”
Stool: Restoration Hardware
Floor Tile: here, here & here – similar.
Mudroom
This home always features a mudroom with charcoal wainscoting and a black and white patterned tile. Paint color is Sherwin Williams SW 7674 Peppercorn.
Lighting: Visual Comfort – similar here.
Baskets: here – similar.
Curb-Appeal
Boulder wall – We chose lighter colored stones to contrast the dramatic, timeless black cedar shake, with three different scales of stone. The tiny aggregate porch sits on top of the larger stone belt that wraps the house. We used giant ledge boulders to retain the house on the hill.”

$2.3 Million Homes in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Illinois
Philadelphia | $2.295 Million
A 1925 stone house with six bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, on a nearly half-acre lot
This home is in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, less than half a mile east of Wissahickon Valley Park, with its 57 miles of trails, and a short walk from Germantown Avenue, a cobblestone corridor lined with shops and restaurants. The nearest SEPTA station is a two-minute walk, and the train trip south to downtown Philadelphia takes less than 30 minutes.
Size: 5,064 square feet
Price per square foot: $453
Indoors: The original house was designed by the G.W. & W.D. Hewitt architecture firm, known for Philadelphia’s 1904 Bellevue-Stratford Hotel. In 2014, the interiors were overhauled by John S. Andrews Architects: The front entrance hall was opened up, the kitchen was moved and a family room, first-floor powder room and mudroom were created. Improvements also included new hardwood flooring, a new roof, all new wiring, a new high-efficiency natural gas heating system and an updated cooling system.
The elegant, high-ceilinged foyer leads through an interior colonnade to a dining room with a fireplace and walls covered in a silver-patterned chinoiserie paper designed by Meg Braff. French doors open to a sunroom that wraps around a corner of the house and connects to the long, covered front porch. Another door leads to the former galley kitchen, now a sitting room with grasscloth-covered walls, a built-in corner bookcase, a fireplace and French doors that open to the back terrace.
On the other side of the foyer is a living room with a bay window hung with custom silk draperies, gray walls with white picture-rail molding, a gas-burning fireplace and built-in bookshelves. Beyond it is the new eat-in chef’s kitchen, which has radiant-heated floors, a breakfast nook with an L-shaped banquette that seats 10, a wet bar and a marble-topped island that seats four and incorporates a wine refrigerator.
The new powder room has radiant-heated floors and Cole & Son botanical wallpaper. The rear mudroom includes open and closed storage areas; it leads to the backyard and to the detached two-car garage.
On the second floor is a master suite with sea-foam-green fabric wallcovering and a wood-burning fireplace. A walk-in closet is lined with custom shelving and includes an island. The master bathroom is surfaced in Porcelanosa porcelain tile and has a walk-in glass shower and a vanity with twin sinks. This floor also has two guest bedrooms with fireplaces, a new hall bathroom with a combined tub and shower, and a new laundry room.
An additional three bedrooms, including a guest suite, are on the third floor. A new hall bathroom has a walk-in glass shower.
Outdoor space: The property was recently improved with pebble patios, a row of trees, a fishpond with a fountain and outdoor lighting.
Taxes: $13,256

Santa Fe, N.M. | $2.3 Million
A pueblo-style house with three bedrooms and three bathrooms
Katherine Stinson Otero (1891-1977), a stunt pilot who is credited with being the first woman skywriter and went on to practice as an architect in Santa Fe, designed this adobe home (or the original carriage house that was expanded into this home) after retiring from aviation in 1920. Part of a compound she designed in Plaza Chamisal — in a historic area that is a 10-minute walk south of the Santa Fe Plaza and even closer to the art galleries on Canyon Road to the east — it was remodeled in 2004 by Lloyd Martinez, a builder, working with Wayne Lloyd, an architect, and a number of local artisans. The furniture, including an outdoor patio table made of jade, is being sold with the property; the artworks will not remain.
Size: 2,750 square feet
Price per square foot: $836
Indoors: Wisteria vines frame the shaded entrance. The original Dutch front door opens to a foyer that steps down to a living room with plaster walls, viga beams and a kiva fireplace with a decorative plaster finish. The living room continues into a separate dining room with a brass-and-crystal chandelier. The new kitchen is the last in the sequence of rooms, up two steps, behind a plaster wall with a pass-through. It has a pine-cone fireplace, wood-paneled cabinets with stone-tile countertops and a mural painted around a back door leading to the garden.
Turning right from the foyer you find a large guest bedroom with knotty-pine finishes and furnishings and whipstitch detailing on one of the plaster walls. The en suite bathroom has russet-colored stucco walls and Mexican tile squares on the vanity top and in the combined tub and shower.
A staircase with risers inlaid with patterned mosaics ascends to the second level, where there are two bedroom suites. The master bedroom has a private outdoor balcony. The stone-tile-clad master bathroom includes a side-by-side soaking tub and shower in arched niches, as well as double sinks and a kiva fireplace.
Outdoor space: The property has adobe walls surrounding lush gardens and three outdoor entertainment zones. A heated, covered terrace runs alongside the house, next to an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue grill. There is also a fieldstone-paved terrace that the owners built in an adjacent lot they acquired; in that area is the jade dining table, under a pergola. Off-street parking is in front of the house, and to the side.
Taxes: $9,279 (2018), plus a $575 quarterly homeowner’s fee

Evanston, Ill. | $2.25 Million
A 1923 Mediterranean-style house with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms
The owners bought this brick house steps from Lake Michigan in 1999 and undertook an extensive renovation that doubled its size. They added a wing to the west side, extended the back of the building and constructed a detached three-car garage with a one-bedroom apartment.
The property is in northeast Evanston, on Sheridan Road, a sinuous, tree-lined thoroughfare that takes you south to Chicago (the Loop is about a 40-minute drive). Shopping districts are about a mile southwest along Central Street, and in downtown Evanston, about a mile and a half south. The nearest public elementary school is three blocks away, and Northwestern University’s campus is less than a mile away. The home is very close to Lighthouse Beach.
Size: 7,373 square feet
Price per square foot: $305
Indoors: Terraced front steps take you to custom-made steel front door with circular windows that match the new porthole windows on the facade. The two-story foyer introduces the walnut-stained oak floors and traditional molding found throughout the home. The living room is to the left; it has the original marble fireplace with a carved mantel. Casement windows topped by half moons of glass line the walls and extend into an adjacent music room with new French doors leading to a side terrace.
A swinging door connects the living room to a 15-by-17-foot dining room. From there, you enter a butler’s pantry with marble-topped counters, a glass-mosaic-tile backsplash and stainless steel appliances, including a dishwasher, wine cooler and ice maker.
The kitchen that follows has the same finishes, as well as a custom zebrawood island, and occupies one end of a family room that is almost 19 by 26 feet. (A gas fireplace is at the other end.) Three sets of glass doors along one wall of this room open to an attached screened porch with bluestone flooring and skylights set into a wood ceiling. The owners also created a first-floor office in the addition, facing front, with a trio of arched windows.
There are four bedrooms on the second floor. The master suite takes up the entirety of the addition and includes a 388-square-foot bedroom with a wall of open cabinetry, a 181-square-foot closet fitted out with racks, cubbies and drawers and, between them, a bathroom with marble finishes, heated floors, a jetted tub and a steam shower. The three guest bedrooms have use of two hall bathrooms, and each has a walk-in closet.
A fifth bedroom and a bathroom with a marble shower are on the walkout lower level, which has radiant-heated floors throughout. This level also includes a rec room, a gym, a bonus room, a wine cellar and a combined laundry room and mudroom with slate floors and six large storage cubbies.
Outdoor space: A double-tiered deck reached from the family room includes a 700-square-foot upper level with an outdoor kitchen and a hot tub, and a 430-square-foot lower level. The vaulted garage apartment, which is rentable, has a bedroom, a full bathroom, an eat-in kitchen and a 615-square-foot bonus space currently used as an office.

Meet Ashleigh, my HERO from Stone Link; she may look young, but Ashleigh is super knowledgeable about all types of stone, quartz, tile, sinks, iron doors….and probably much more I don’t even know about!
Stone Link is located on Highway 80 in Longview, & they have a super extensive showroom and stone yard full of the most impressive displays I’ve seen this side of the Dallas design showrooms….just take a look at the view from their front door:
Tumblr media
Nice, huh?!  This is only a tiny part of the showroom, but the rest you’ll want to explore on your own….
OK, so here’s the story of my urban cottage’s countertops:  I really really wanted to use quartz in the kitchen of this house; I had wanted to use it in a former Lake Cherokee remodel, but alas, that was 2008 and it was quite a bit more expensive than granite…..which always seemed strange since granite has to be formed over thousands of years, in the earth, by pressure, and therefore is a limited resource.  Quartz, on the other hand, is man-made using 8-10% polymers etc, and roughly 90% crushed quartz….which is actually usually crushed or waste granite, marble & natural stone or recycled industrial wastes like ceramic, silica, glass, mirrors, etc.  The pricing on quartz countertops is usually still higher than granite, as demand has continue to drive the price of granite downward….and while quartz started out  ‘trying to look like granite’, the trend now is towards very different-looking quartz material that doesn’t resemble anything nature made!  I see it as a great way to recycle waste material, so it’s a win-win scenario!
Soooooo, weeks ago I visited Stone Link on a  Saturday; it was D-Day.  I had to know whether or not I could get quartz countertops into the budget, and pick out the granite if not.  I was so lucky to meet Ashleigh, who was totally prepared to answer all my questions, figure estimates based on my kitchen/bath scaled drawings, and was generally all-around encouraging & helpful.  And here is how she made it work for me:
These are 3 pictures of the beautiful PRE-CUT slabs of granite and marble Stone Link has on hand; the selection always varies, and presumably the more desirable slabs sell fastest….though really, aren’t they all beautiful?!    By using pre-cut slabs for both of my bathrooms (thus greatly decreasing the labor involved) we were able to save enough off of my countertop budget to do quartz in the kitchen for just a TAD more….and I decided it was worth it!  So I picked this quartz, which looks a great deal like Carrara marble:
And for the two baths, I chose these 2 slabs (honestly I went back and changed one of them a few weeks later, but still chose from the pre-cut slabs)
If you’re wondering why I wanted quartz in the first place, here is a good resource for the comparison between granite, marble & quartz.  But one of the main reasons for me is that granite has to be sealed, & re-sealed yearly, as it is a porous material.  (and most granite owners fail to re-seal….life gets in the way)  For a cook’s kitchen, quartz is actually a harder surface, & easier to keep clean….& it never needs to be sealed.  Also, my vision for this kitchen included white countertops; while there are now more white-based granites available, they are premium-priced & still, more colorful.  Carrara marble is a traditional choice for a cook’s kitchen, but marble is soft & porous….so this beautiful quartz was my favorite choice to give the best of both materials.
I’m happy to say that my lovely countertops were installed last Thursday, and while I’ll give you a tiny peek now….you’ll have to wait a week or two longer to REALLY be awed!  Here’s why:
The house is in serious finish-out phase right now, but that makes it hard to get good pictures of any one thing!  Because we are ‘layering’ the tasks to get me moved in on time (and just because I think that’s the best way), we were still operating this past week without any interior lighting.  The electricians will be back this week to put in the final service panel and install ceiling lights….AFTER the ceilings are painted.  So these pics are going to look really really rough….and you may well not believe the house will be ready for movers in 2…..yes, 2 weeks.  But we do have a plan……stay tuned
Tumblr media
First look at the edge of the 7′ island….
Tumblr media
First look at one of the countertops (and cabinets!)….
Tumblr media
First look at the stainless one-bowl apron sink…
And….first look at the hall bath counter installation in progress; later that day the undermounted sink was installed beautifully!  But…speaking of sinks…..
The sink issue reminds me to pass on to the uninitiated what can happen the day of countertop installation, in hopes of preparing you to, well….be prepared!
RULE #1:  HAVE ALL YOUR FAUCETS ON-SITE!
Having been through this a gazillion times before, I knew this rule….so Roger made sure the plumbing fixtures were all delivered to the job-site on Tuesday, to be prepared for Thursday.  If you’ve never had stone countertops installed before, it’s crucial to have both the sinks and faucets available.  Often the fabricators will install a standard stainless sink in their workshop, making it necessary to get it  TO them ahead of time – which is also why they often include the sink in the price of the job.  But in my case, the apron sink made it necessary to install on-site, as the cabinet front had to be modified at the same time.  They also elected to install the 3 bathroom sinks on-site, as they were porcelain bowls that could have broken in transit, since they were transporting quite a bit of stone.
But you also must have your faucets on hand for the installers, as they will need to cut the holes after the countertops are installed.  Some of my clients have been surprised to find out that “faucet holes” are not standard; they each come with a template to be used for cutting the holes, so there is a proper fit when they’re later installed.   And if you think about it,  some sets have a separate hole for the sprayer, lotion or hot water.  (mine has only one hole, as I prefer a pull-out sprayer, and have NEVER ONCE used the lotion, soap or hot water hole effectively)
So I arrived at the house Thursday mid-morning to make sure all the faucets were laid out in the right location in case I couldn’t be there when they needed them.  It was only then that I noticed the kitchen faucet & drain were NOT in the big box of plumbing fixtures that had been delivered!  After a few calls, we determined they had just been left off…..so fortunately  Coburns had the faucet in stock, and I only had to make a quick trip to pick it up and have it available….I was so thankful not to have interfering appointments that day so I could do it!  Then later in the day I returned to the site, knowing they were finally there and working.  Much to my delight, I saw that one bathroom countertop had been installed, and they were working on the master bath!  PROBLEM #2!
RULE #2:  Make sure your plumbing fixtures are measured correctly!
Remember these lovely round porcelain sinks from an earlier blog post?  I just loved the shape, having never seen this exact elegantly curved and perfectly round sink.  And I made sure to pick out a high-arc faucet that would reach over the rim and not splash water outside the bowl.  What Ashleigh and I both missed was actually measuring…..one thing that IS standard is the depth of a bathroom countertop!  As I arrived, the guys were standing there scratching their heads over the master bath slab, with the lovely sink sitting atop it for placement.  What they were trying to do was mark exactly where the hole would be cut; this involves placing both the chosen sink and the faucet on the surface to be marked precisely (and since I have double sinks in that room they needed to match exactly as well).  They not only need to LOOK right on the slab…..they also have to take into consideration the inside edge of the front of the cabinet, and the granite overhang.  They were scratching their heads because I walked right into them realizing this just wasn’t going to work! The sink was too large to possibly fit it onto the countertop, unless I was willing to put the faucet on a side corner…….NOPE!
A quick call to Ashleigh confirmed that I was in fact the FIRST purchaser of these elegant new sinks…..and nobody yet knew they were too large for a standard installation!  (The way they would work is to have the faucets wall-mounted, but that’s not a modification that can be made this late in the project).  However, this is where flexibility is key to a successful remodel:  we both knew they had just gotten in 2 sinks from the same line which were a softened rectangle shape.  Ashleigh had actually called me to come in earlier in the week to see the new ones and make sure I didn’t want to switch.  So there was the solution!  She immediately sent out the alternate sinks and the job continued.  I’m sure the new shape will grow on me, but on a project this size one really has to be flexible and not sweat the necessary modifications!  Be the end of the day, the installers had finished all of the countertops, sinks, backsplashes and final corner polishing….and they are just beautiful!  Unfortunately, I cannot show you how pretty they are, as this week all the interior painting is taking place….and the countertops are safely protected,  not to be fully unveiled until it’s safe!  However, I DID give you a sneak peek.  Next time  you see them, I hope you love them as much as I do!
I can hardly wait to reveal the gorgeous new kitchen backsplash I switched to this past week!  I changed from a basic greige subway tile to an iridescent subway that pulls in the grays, bronzes and aquas in sight of the kitchen, very very subtly.  Pictures do not do justice to this lovely tile, so just know I’ll show you very soon!
Finally in closing, thanks go to Ashleigh and her crew from Stone Link….your professionalism is much appreciated!  And to Nancy with Coburns, who listened between the lines and made my selections easy, thanks to you as well!  Both companies are a great resource to us in this area; please check our their showrooms next time you’re dreaming up a project at your own house!
Here’s what is coming up this week:
Window trim-out, crown moulding, door facings and base mouldings installed
Interior painting
Small carpentry ‘fixes’ including the finished step from master bath to bedroom and uneven floor fill-in (where walls were removed)
Tile installation
happy fall!
Tumblr media
set your clocks back next Saturday night!
For adventures in stone countertop choice & installation, read on! Meet Ashleigh, my HERO from Stone Link; she may look young, but Ashleigh is super knowledgeable about all types of stone, quartz, tile, sinks, iron doors....and probably much more I don't even know about!

Sandstone & CNC Finish
What Are the Uses of Sandstone?
Sandstone was a popular building material from ancient times. It is relatively soft, making it easy to carve. It has been widely used around the world in constructing temples, homes, and other buildings. It has also been used for artistic purposes to create ornamental fountains and statues. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed under the oceans, lakes, and rivers. Composed of sand mineral particles (such as quartz or feldspar), this natural stone is very tough and resistant to weathering. It is a popular building and paving material from ancient times. This natural stone usually forms where sand is laid down and buried. For instance, the famous red rocks of the Grand Canyon were formed in a desert setting. The sand grains in sandstone give information about the past such as the kind of countryside that produced the sand or how far they were transported.
Tumblr media
Depending on the mix of rock fragments, sandstone may have a wide range of colors from nearly white to nearly black, gray, brown, or red. As a landscaping and building stone, sandstone is full of character.  Outdoors, this type of natural stone is also used for cladding facades and interior walls. You can find garden benches, patio tables, or swimming pool edges. Sandstone is recognized for its natural strength, durability, and slip-resistant properties. This stone withstands the harshest climates, increasing in value and aesthetic appeal over time. One of the best examples of architecture using sandstone is Petra. In fact, the sandstone layers in Petra were the leading factor in the location and the architectural details. The White House of the United States is one of the most popular buildings using sandstone for its facade. Designed by the Irish architect James Hoban, the Presidential house is clad in pale gray sandstone.
Is Sandstone Hard or Soft Rock?
Sandstones make up about 20 to 25 percent of all sedimentary rocks. Most sandstone is composed of quartz or feldspar (both silicates) because they are the most resistant minerals to weathering processes at the Earth’s surface, as seen in the Goldich dissolution series. The edge of the gray sandstone core is relatively weak and crumbles either to the touch or with minor impact. Cores of other sandstone types fracture with sharp edges or shatter into small sharp fragments.
Crystallized Sandstones are white and sugary and, in many cases, very hard and brittle. Sandstones are made of sand grains that have been cemented together. Like sandpaper, sandstones usually have a rough, granular texture, but to really identify a sandstone you have to peer closely at its surface and look for individual sand grains. Since the grain diameters range from 2 mm all the way down to only 0.06 mm, you may need a good magnifying lens to see the sand grains in a fine-grained sandstone.
Where is Sandstone Formed?
Sandstone can be found in many places to deposits across the World. In India, there are four main sandstone deposits that can be found in Jaisalmer, Dholpur, Agra, and Kota. Jaisalmer Yellow Sandstone, found in Jaisalmer County India, has been used in many government buildings, including the Jai. There are at least 8 varieties of sandstone to be found in South Africa, but many of the quarries in this country have since closed down.
Europe is home to most of the sandstone deposits of the world, with countries such as Switzerland, Germany, and France holding the bulk of them. Germany, in fact, lays claim to having the most deposits in the entire world with around 64 varieties of the stone all being found in different areas.
What Properties Does Sandstone Have?
Mineralogy
Occurrence
Water Absorption
Texture
Structure
Hardness
Color
Porosity
It has a hardness of 6 to 7, and conchoidal fractures are present.
It has coarse to fine grain size.
Sandstone is a highly porous natural stone.
It has 95.00 N/mm2 compressive strength.
It has 2.6 toughness and 2.2 to 2.8 specific gravity.
The density of Sandstone is between 2.2 to 2.8 g/cm3.
What is Stone Finish?
Basically, a sedimentary rock, sandstone consists of extremely small-size minerals and grain particles. Its major constituents are quartz and feldspar that are also the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust. It exists in a range of colors, due to varying quantities of impurities; but the most popular sandstone shades include grey, tan, pink, yellow, brown, white, black, and red.
Brushed: This finish is so-called because the sandstone surface is treated with a metal or hard plastic brush. The process removes the soft sections of the surface while leaving behind a slightly weathered texture.
Honed: It has a relatively smooth surface. In this finish, the sandstone is treated to develop an even, smooth and flat surface. This finish is preferred for interior wall cladding and flooring. Benchtops and kitchen countertops are also made out of sandstone with this finish.
Sawn/Machine-Cut: This process utilizes diamond disc teeth to develop the finish and the resultant stone has a somewhat uneven and rough surface with tiny depressions and undulations. Sandstone tiles and pieces with a sawn-cut finish are used in driveways, pathways, patios, and paving.
Tumbled: In this finish, the sandstone surface loses its sharp edges and becomes smooth. For this, the sandstone is treated with small-size yet relatively stronger stones in a drum-like machine. The tumbling process makes the surface entirely uniform with a soft surface and edges. Cutting is not possible with this finish due to the lack of sharp and distinct edges.
Polished: The surface is brilliant and shiny with a mirror effect. It causes the most refined edge for tiles. The process of polishing is by repeated application of abrasive treatments. This type of finishing is suitable for almost all kinds of stones. This is very regular finishing, especially in Iranian stone factories. Polished tiles are used for interiors as well as benchtop and countertop, but it is not suggested for outdoor since it reduces slip resistance.
What Stone Finish is somewhat rough and textured to the touch?
Tumbled: In this finish, the sandstone surface loses its sharp edges and becomes smooth. For this, the sandstone is treated with small-size yet relatively stronger stones in a drum-like machine. The tumbling process makes the surface entirely uniform with a soft surface and edges. Cutting is not possible with this finish due to the lack of sharp and distinct edges. Honed: It has a relatively smooth surface. In this finish, the sandstone is treated to develop an even, smooth and flat surface. This finish is preferred for interior wall cladding and flooring. Benchtops and kitchen countertops are also made out of sandstone with this finish.
What is a brushed finish on stone?
Brushed: This finish is so-called because the sandstone surface is treated with a metal or hard plastic brush. The process removes the soft sections of the surface while leaving behind a slightly weathered texture.

New Century Modern Home Design
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design (previously featured here) recently completed this beautiful home and I am honored to be sharing their incredible work here on Home Bunch. Please keep reading to know all details shared by this talented interior designer:
“We met the clients as they toured a Street of Dreams project we had designed. They had found a 9 acre parcel of land to build their dream home on. They had started working with a home designer but they didn’t feel like the floor plan was feeling like the family home they had dreamed of at the beginning of the process. We worked along side the home designer and clients to reconfigure spaces and also reduce the overall footprint of the home that just felt too big. The home ended up being 7,500 sq ft.”

New Construction Home Inspiration
Recently built by Spaces Renewed, this new construction home is here to show us that challenges might arrive during the process of building a home but things always end up well if you’re choosing the right group of professionals. Here, the builder and designer, shares some insights:
“As a company, this was our first new construction build, and we chose a doozy! The lot had significant soil, slip plane, and engineering challenges. We moved 22,000 tons of dirt, dug out the whole mountain, and rebuilt it, this time with proper compaction. It had sat vacant for 15 years after the first home built on it slipped down the mountain, but we wanted to prove it could be done! So, as a business venture, this build was an invaluable experience. Personally, we built it for us! My husband and I own this business, and took on the challenge of new construction, with ourselves as the clients! There are countless stories of what it felt like to be both business owner, designer, builder and client (all while doing it with my business partner/husband!).” – Beth Booth.
I hope you guys feel encouraged and inspired by this house tour!
  New Construction Home Inspiration
“Our goal for this house was to create a modern coastal vibe, but add to it a warm, inviting and elegant feel. Each element of the house was meant to be interesting and beautiful, without the busy, overdone feel that can easily crowd out the clean line aesthetic. We wanted each element to be unique and highly stylized, without being obnoxious! This house really does have something for everyone; touches of modern Spanish, traditional coastal, farmhouse.”

Modern Farmhouse with Traditional Interiors
Recently renovated by Hyland Homes and located in Western Springs, Illinois, this home features a modern farmhouse exterior and reinvented traditional interiors. Here, the designer shares more details:
“Our clients in Western Springs were looking to expand their new home by doing a whole home remodel. This cute, little ranch was transformed into a beautiful bungalow. Formal living room welcomes you from the front door, which leads into the expansive, open kitchen with seating, and the formal dining and family room off to the back. Four bedrooms top off the second floor with vaulted ceilings in the master.”
I hope this home inspires you today!
