"Told you they're gorgeous now that the city's dead of lights," Ash murmured at a quick glance up to the clear skies, fulfilling a promise he made to Jer a couple of nights ago. The stars filled the sky even with the full moon shining in all its brilliance, as if wishing the other man happy birthday all the same. Still, he couldn't help the nerves of whether he'd even have Jer tonight at all, with other celebrations for him underway and assuming his attention would be elsewhere, Ash was mentally (emotionally?) prepared to not get an answer when he knocked on his door.

Ash took a few steps away from the telescope to sit down by the picnic bench, patting on the space beside him to invite Jer to join, flashing a boyish grin he always had when it came to the stars as he leaned back against the table, "it's a full moon tonight so it's too bright to really see the full extent of it all but, still pretty." Turning his gaze down from the sky to finally face Jer fully, fishing out the sealed bottle of Yamazaki 18 he dug out earlier, "and- this is my absolutely last bottle of whiskey I have." He had said he ran out of his own stash of liquor early on, but this was the one in his drawer locked away from the temptation to ever cave if he was ever in a bad place, ever since he moved here, surprised by his own will power over the years to keep it there. But he pulled this out today, because he felt like he was in a good place, and it seemed like the best way to crack it open - with someone that's been there with him since the start of the bottle's confinement.

"I know it's not the best or most exciting gift you've gotten today but.." Ash chuckled with a weak gesture to the scene in front of them before he handed the bottle to Jer, managing a soft smile and warm words of fondness, "happy birthday."

His own smile grew with hers, relieved to see her relax around him, perhaps Jeremiah had always been a good way for them to connect, the one easy thing they had in common. But now he was more than happy to give in to her excitement of the telescope, not many people left in the building had that much excitement for it.

He simply nodded quietly with a boyish grin to reply her in their silence, he always had his own youthful excitement that never goes away with the night sky, letting her take a look at the set up, slowing explaining so nothing would startle her. "Once I put in our coordinates and time now and press the align button, it'll move on its own, don't be scared by it." At this point he knew Wexley's longitude and latitude by heart already inputting the hour and minute currently and let the telescope realign itself with a soft whir, slowly moving to the minutia of coordinates. "The controller makes it easier to find stuff in the sky," he softly explains while it worked its magic.

He then offered her the controller after pressing a few settings, once the initial set up was done everything after was pretty straightforward "Wanna try and find something?" The controller that honestly looked like a complicated calculator, now has a screen with a few options of celestial bodies and planets and galaxies. The sky was darkening, and a perfect time to just play around first.

Say happy birthday. The little quip actually made her smile grow, because they both knew she wouldn't be saying anything, but she'd find her own way to tell him.

Though, with how long it took Ashton to recognize what she was getting at, maybe Jeremiah would need as clear of motions as possible. Something clever. Maybe she'd make him a note, even if her hands weren't as nimble as they used to be. Brows rising at Ashton's expression, the flush that filled his cheeks, her smile only grew. It was so nice, to do something for someone on their birthday, and it proved that Ashton really was a nice Man.

Taken a little aback by the offer, large eyes blinked rapidly in surprise as she gave a little point to herself and then to the telescope. She could look, too? Face lighting up with excitement, she came closer still, leaning in to have a look at the controller in his hands, entirely curious about how it all worked.

The instinct to freeze up was so strong and he flinched ever so slightly at the mention of his mother again, she hadn't hit that in at least a year and so it was jarring to hear it again. It was also the signals of the start of something, some off handed comment of something random. And then it gets worse. But Ashton did his best to pull his feet to keep going, ignore her, ignore everything. Once he was out of sight from her in the atrium, he let his face show to concern, not holding it for more than a few seconds the moment he sees Maisie excited over the stack of books.

"Oh, Ashton." Amusement tinging in her tone even as he turned to walk away, having fallen for the pettiness of her little joke, just enough to prickle at his hackles she was sure. Why not leave him with one more parting remark just to make sure her barbs stuck in like porcupine quills.

"Your mother was a teacher, wasn't she?" Speaking in very purposeful, but outwardly casual past tense, Sada picked up her book once more to flip through in rediscovery of her lost page.

"Maybe you could channel her and write them some books." A helpful suggestion from any one else, but she knew, to his ear, any mention of his mother of her lips would be enough to have him bristling.

'Just a thought." Shrugging it off as she found her place, Sada settled into the pages in a way so very obviously dismissive of him.

We can be selfless for now. I’ll help you. But then, when it’s over, we’ll have to be a bit selfish, okay? We’ll have to.

That’s what Maddy had told Benjy Fenwick on the 21st of March, not long before the first injured fighter had walked into the make-shift infirmary and asked for help. And then? Then ‘it’s over’ hadn’t come. Not for a long while.

First the worst injuries and curses were treated, all through the night, and then in the morning the minor injuries. As promised, Maddy stood by Benjy’s side and helped. Those who had been able to wait, had waited, but eventually they came in, too, and between waiting for Emmeline to wake up and realising that once she did, she was still not ready to resume her work, there was the task of recuperating anything they could from the Potter Estate and moving it over to the House of Bones. And as promised, Maddy stood by Benjy’s side and helped. There were a couple of other people who sometimes took over, just long enough for them to take a nap or go home and notify everyone that they were doing okay. To shower. To eat. And as promised, Maddy stood by Benjy’s side and helped. 

Eventually all had ebbed down a little, and she asked if she could go take a look at Diagon Alley, see how bad it was, and she had asked when they’d see each other again, where, and if that would be because it was finally all over or because it wasn’t, and she had asked if he was okay. And Benjy had said yes, he was okay, and Maddy hadn’t believed him and left anyway. No longer by his side, no longer of help.

She’d done that a long time ago already, and in a way she’d never forgiven herself for it. The anger she felt towards Benjy and Dorcas was in so many parts anger meant for herself, wasn’t it? She’d slept eerily well, the whole week through, perhaps out of exhaustion, perhaps because she knew she was finally doing something, but that night, the night after Benjy said he no longer needed her help, she couldn’t find rest. The moment the morning greyed, she sent an Owl. It came back with an address. Maddy recognised it vaguely as being where Benjy and his dads lived and didn’t hesitate. She was dressed in no time and out of the door in even less.

By 10 o’clock, she arrived at the address. “Benjy?” she asked, the moment the door opened.

I don’t want to be with you again but I think I’ll always wonder why I was never enough.

Was it a lie when you told me you were already with someone new? Or was that all said just because I had someone? It made me feel worse because either you lied about being with someone or you lied about not being ready for a serious relationship. I would prefer the former because at least that would be one less person who left me for someone else…

I want to be happy for you but I think I’m still angry, especially if it was the latter. You constantly caused my abandonment issues to swell. You constantly made me feel stupid. You made me feel like I meant nothing to you at a time in my life when you meant everything to me.

I hate that all of this has come up. I’m getting married and I’m so fucking excited. I would never give that up. I just feel guilty that sometimes this stuff still bothers me.
