Difference in March Madness for Menâs and Womenâs Basketball Part 2
For the March Madness 2022 season, the merchandise looked different. When watching the March Madness tournament, you may have noticed that the menâs courts read âMarch Madnessâ but the womenâs courts read âNCAA Womenâs Basketball.â The womenâs courts donât feature the names and logos of the host teams either. In a statement, the NCAA said, âWe are committed to working with all constituents to determine the best way forward for womenâs basketball including the use of March Madness logos if desiredâ (âTrademark âMarch Madnessâ Missing in Womenâs NCAA Tournament | AP Newsâ). âIf desiredâ the NCAA says, as if they think the womenâs team would want a different logo, a logo that doesnât even demonstrate the tournament that theyâre playing in. Obviously, the women want the same logo the men have. Thatâs what draws more attention to the tournament. The âMarch Madnessâ logo is a recognizable signature logo. In 2022, the NCAA finally allowed the women's tournament use of the "March Madness" branding for the tournament and merchandise. Why did it take until 2022 for women to finally be allowed to use this same logo? Keep in mind the women are now able to use this âMarch Madnessâ logo; however, there are still distinct differences in the womenâs logo versus the menâs. The womenâs logo has diagonal marks below the âMâ in âMarchâ and under the word âMadnessâ shifted to orange. The NCAA also switched the menâs tournament Twitter handle to @MarchMadnessMBB and launched @MarchMadnessWBB for the womenâs tournament. The handle @MarchMadness is no longer active on Twitter. Both tournaments are sharing the hashtag #MarchMadness, but the hashtag #FinalFour is getting a W added to it for the womenâs games (#WFinalFour). 2022 also marked the first year the womenâs tournament had a 68 team field instead of 64. The menâs tournament has had 68 teams since 2011 (Hill, âNCAA Extending March Madness Name to Womenâs Tournament for First Timeâ). Although thereâs been positive changes, the menâs tournament still airs on CBS, a mainstream channel, while the womenâs tournament airs on ESPN. ESPN is not a mainstream channel and viewers have to search for it. Since the men get CBS, give the women NBC or ABC. Overall, it is clear that changes are being made and the sport of college basketball is becoming more equal for women but it shouldnât have reached this point. It isnât difficult to supply male and female athletes with the same amenities and resources. Women should not have to beg for the same treatment as men.

This is my son, Johnâs, NCAA menâs basketball bracket. In a year when there have been more upsets as well as more unpredictability than ever, John got half of The Final Four correct AND still has both his Finals teams alive as well. Hence, the grin on his face knowing heâs already won one pool heâs in and will likely win the other. Way to go John⊠youâre amazing! @marchmadnessmbb @ncaa #ncaa #finalfour #downsyndrome @sandiegostateuniversity @uconnmbb https://www.instagram.com/p/CqRrloQOSLZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
