“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation, in be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX, Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. §§ 1681-1688
This week marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX! This piece of legislation was introduced to eliminate sex-based discrimination in all federally-funded education. The ramifications of Title IX are wide, ranging from equal access to sports programs, to the right to an education free of gender-based or intimate-partner violence. It also requires schools to give LGBTQI+ students equal “access to a safe and inclusive school environment.” (U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights, Resources for LGBTQI+ Students)
Columbus State’s Office of Equity and Compliance offers a comprehensive website explaining Title IX as it relates to the College, including information about how to file a complaint.
Virtual displays from the Columbus State Library can jump-start your research by suggesting useful databases, search terms, and items from our collection. Our databases and collection items are available exclusively to current Columbus State students and employees; authentication is required for access.
