I'm going to try and go through what I suspect the neutrality rules will be generally, based on having watched other sports federations try to navigate this.
No involvement with the army or police institutions including military or police sports clubs. I'm expecting CSKA and Dynamo affiliation will result in ineligibility. So right off that bat that's Melnikova, Vorona, Esipova, Ilyankova, Kustova, and Perebinosova (the first one CSKA, and the other five with Dynamo).
So where does that leave the field from 2023 Russian Nationals? I include the scores which are obviously silly but they do show a certain relative strength of these gymnasts.
Viktoria Listunova - 58.532
Angelina Melnikova - 58.166
Elena Gerasimova - 54.732
Maria Agafonova - 54.332
Uliana Perebinosova - 53.699
Alyona Glotova - 53.566
Yana Vorona - 53.499
Leila Vasilieva - 52.465
Alina Shklokova - 50.465
Yulia Nikolaeva - 49.166
Vladislava Urazova only did beam and it's said that she's out of favor with VRod.
Maria Minaeva was injured last year and she's only on beam at the upcoming Russian Cup.
One note about the scoring, I think there is a fair amount of evidence of degradation in the Russian field during the ban but I still think the high end (i.e. Listunova) should be expected to be on par with where they were in Tokyo. I would lob about 2.5 points off these scores but that still means Listunova and Melnikova are still very good.
But now we've removed the easy people off that list (and doing this exercise on the MAG side is much easier because almost everyone would be excluded). I'm expecting public participation in propaganda and social media support for the war to be enough to exclude you. It will not be "check this box I don't support the war". That's not how basically any sports federation has handled this. I haven't followed the Russian WAG's social media but I expect in the depths of VK or Telegraph a few of them have said some repulsive things but I'll leave that to Russian speakers to find. It's worth saying that every sports federation that has instituted these neutrality conditions has missed someone who has said something repulsive on social media. Fencing even had to pull someone off a start list the morning of a competition.
So now we get to the thorny question: What about that propaganda rally? If Listunova and Gerasimova (who I expect are the strongest potential entrants into the international field) did that today it would almost certainly mean they would be excluded as Listunova is 18 and Gerasimova is 19. My instinct is that the authorities will decide that gymnasts who did such things when they were minors wont be held against them. But that's just a guess on my part.
All the more reason the age limit should go up to 18 for the Olympics in general because if you aren't responsible for your actions you shouldn't be competing with people who are.
The next layer of complication is that given that all the most prominent MAG athletes are bound to be excluded as well as Melnikova there is also a good chance that Valentina will announce that the neutrality conditions are an offense to the honor of Russia and none of the state supported gymnasts will be attempting to gain neutral status. She's signaled that this is possible but that might be saber rattling. Again if I was taking a wild guess... if Listunova is excluded because of the rally they will take a pass on Paris completely.

Igor Grom #3-5 is written by Alexey Zamskiy, translated by Tatyana Omelchenko, art by Denis Popov, pencils by Artem Bizyaev & Natalia Zaidova [#3], Ivan Ilyasov, colored by Artem Bizyaev & Maria Vasilieva [#3], Natalia Martinovich, and cover by Lada Akishina & Anastasia Kim [#3], Marina Privalova. I find that Igor Grom is different in feel to the start of Major Thunder. I do not necessarily hate it, but it took some getting used to. I did find it difficult at first, until roughly #3, because I found it very, ehhhh, dour. It is picking up a little, yet I feel its reliance is less on the main character and more on the plot. Dima may be my most favorite character currently in the series, however I like “Russian cafe AU: Ms Frizzle,” as I call her. I do not think I would stop reading it, but I feel like Igor is in a rut as a character. While I appreciate his struggle of “omg headstuffs”, I feel like its dragging. That isn’t to say that the plot is dragging, although it is a little, but rather that as a character, the plot continues on with or without him. I have seen this a couple times in fiction and it is always frustrating. It is a bit of the Batman Syndrome: the detective / hero character becomes moody and depressed, the story becomes perpetually dark, and there is no reprieve. Yet it continues on and on and on. This was the reason why I stopped reading Marvel, especially their Avengers series. Too often everyone was angry or miserable. The entire atmosphere was painful to read. I worry that Igor Grom will not learn to pick itself, or himself?, back up.  I am far from stopping this series, but these are simply my concerns )

vba classical exam is done. Maria koshkareva, stand out form kovaleva class, good technique, extension, and strength. She might get the lead role for the grad performance. Also why is irina gushing about a particular student(frishman)?
I will be shocked if Koshkareva isn't dancing big leads in the grad performance. This is the girl who was given Masha at 16, ahead of her more senior classmates. For sure one to watch, especially because she still has a whole year left before she graduates. No one from the current graduating class is being pushed nearly as hard. There's been a relative lull at VBA since the 2018 class graduated, Koshkareva could be the next standout.
Irina posted pictures with Valeriya Frishman (Kharitnova), who is graduating in the class of Marina Vasilieva. I believe she is the daughter of Irina's close friend, they've known each other a long time it sounds like. Apparently, she danced the exam with a fractured metatarsal and successfully made it through.

Russian Cup, stage 4
I’ll try to mention some of the lesser known skaters this time. Because they are all so good but often this is not enough because this is Russia: there are countless talented skaters and only a very limited number of international spots. (I came to the conclussion that - especially in juniors - the key is not to get attached too much to one skater, one team and just appreciate everything we get to see)
Pairs
Sometimes I really can’t wrap my mind around it. They are all sooo good. First warm-up group and they are so good, second group and they are great, third group world class.
Let me scream VIKTORIA VASILIEVA / Nikita Volodin. She was a singles skater a year ago. I saw her two years ago at JGP with my own eyes. And now? She is a pair skater. That was such an awesome debut for this new pair. I am in awe. And especially their Mickmacks FP is great.
I also liked Maria Alchova/Sergei Bezborodko and their Peal Harbour FP. (Poor them and the death spiral though)
Karina Akopova/Nikita Rakhmanin they are speeeed. (Limelight SP and based on my very limited knowledge of cyrilic alphabet a mix of P. I. Tchaikovsky’s music with A. Bocelli’s Fall on me???) Anyway they are so quick on the ice.
I love every Memoirs of a Geisha program and of course I loved Jasmina Kadyrova/Ivan Balchenko and their SP.
I love Boikova/Kozlovskii so so so much. And I love their SP, I’m so happy that we finally saw them. Their SP is so light, tender, classical. Their FP was good but not just that magically great as we maybe got too much used to it. It couldn’t be easy for them skating just hours after their coach’s husband passed away on top of everything else. (I absolutely didn’t know but they formed a pair in 2015 having skated only in singles prior to that.)
youtube
I have to admit I have a complicated relationship with Tarasova/Morozov. Though I liked their Adagio FP and after rewatching Bolero many times, yeah, there’s in fact nothing wrong with this program... They are just not my favourite skaters but I can still see why they are one of the best in the world. If I associate B/K with lightness, T/M are definitely power.
Mishina/Galliamov are back. Well, they were not away, it was just one bad comp and it happened to be Russian nationals which was so unfortunate. They were oozing confidence this time. They were flawless, I loved the low death spiral and the whole Esmeralda SP and the dance lifts and creative choreo sequence in their Bohemian Rhapsody FP.

Ice Dance, Sr.
I really appreciate that the organizers give the opportunity to foreign skaters training in Russia to unofficially take part in the Russian Cup series. You won’t find them on the results pages, but I think for them the most important thing is that they can skate in whatever form it is...
This time, it was Hungarians Anna Yanovskaya/Adam Lukacs skating to Grease RD and Hymne l’amour FD. (I love these combinations of programs: one more upbeat one more classical).
If I’m counting right it’s at least fifth Grease I’ve seen this (or last) season: Guignard/Fabbri, Shpilevaya/Smirnov, Pavlenina/Aleksanian and the queen and the king of Grease Smart/Diaz - I enjoy watching and comparing these programs, so there’s never too much Singing in the rain, Too darn hot... etc. ;) )
If you want to see passion and also synchronized hydroblades watch Vlada Pavlenina/Aleksandr Aleksanian La sal de la terra FD.
I like L’Opera Rock FD of Svetlana Lizunova/Alexander Vakhnov.
And then Julia Tulseva/Anatolii Belovodchenko. Cabaret / Umbrella. I simply love these programs, Cabaret, Burlesque... And their FD was even better, their speed, the interpretation, the curve lifts, the jazzy feel...
And I’m really happy that Anastasia Skoptsova/Kirill Aleshin won this stage and that they kept their Bonnie & Clyde RD.
Ice Dance, Jr.
Let’s take a look at some junior ice dancers! Of course Arina Ushakova/Maxim Nekrasov (I like their Chicago RD) and Vasilisa Kaganovskaya/Valerii Angelopol (here I like their FD) were the best but there were so many great performances:
Polina Kocherigina/Evgenii Artyushchenko - Mala Luna FD.
Polina Usova/Egor Goncharov - Anything goes RD / Sigur Ros FD. Especially the FD was such a mature performance.
Ksenia Davidova/Michail Antonov - Singing in the rain RD I liked the choreography, the whole performance aaand the speed.
Daria Bukovschikova/Alexander Vdovin - New York, New York RD A relaxing “feel-good” program (a style I really like)
Taisia Linchevskaya/Timur Baklanov-Smirnov - Cabaret RD The stylization, the poses, the carriage on the ice...
Alexandra Shabalina/Maxim Kiryukhin - Romeo and Juliet FD
And now let me present three teams I absolutely fell in love with:
Alina Abdulina/Maxim Nuralyev - Fifty checks / Mindfields I love the variations of the famous P/C lift in the RD. And the more pop/rock feel of the FD and synchronized cartwheels?!!  (I called it “P/C lift” but let’s not be like twitter moral police saying that anyone else doing this lift is a copycat; this lift was there long before P/C, eg. Belbin/Agosto did it...)
Sofia Kachushkina/Oleg Muratov - A chorus line / Walking castle?? I nicknamed them Team Red according to their RD costumes. The RD is such a fun and energetic performance, they even use the lyrics - saying steps, walk, ministeps and they do on the ice. And their FD is totally different, very balletic, like a fairy tale.
youtube
Alisa Ovsyankina/Matvei Samokhin - Aladdin / Dance of the Sugar plum fairy
They are babies and these programs are so fitting for them. The FD is from Nutcracker and I squealed. Yes, yes, yes, yes, that’s a perfromace, that’s so cute and just lovely to watch.

Ask Responses: Tough Questions #2
Can you explain the differences in style between the Vaganova teachers? For example, how do Kovaleva’s dancers differ from Dudinskaya’s and Udalenkova’s and Vasilieva’s? Also, how can a teacher train two dancers and have them be so different? It amazes me. Like Lopatkina and Volochkova. Oh and also, on a side note, what exactly happened to Volochkova? And wasn’t she given the chance to dance Swan Lake while still at ARB? Why her, when in my opinion, Lopatkina would have been better?
I’ve received some tough questions recently (six of the, to be exact). I find these particular questions challenging for a number of reasons: some subject matters are potentially controversial; my personal opinion on certain subjects is not especially nice and I’m cautious when it comes to sharing it; or I simply don’t have enough information to give a good answer. Either way, I will do my best to answer these questions honestly.
Vaganova Ballet Academy professors all teach the same program, but they also have their individual “signatures” – something that sets their students apart. If I’m perfectly honest, I don’t think I have a keen enough eye to immediately identify a teacher by watching their student perform. I think you’d have to be a professional to do that (I’m not). It may be helpful to look at some of the dancers who had graduated under the four professors you named:
Udalenkova
Ekaterina Kondaurova
Irina Perren
Eleonora Sevenard
Renata Shakirova
Kovaleva
Diana Vishneva
Olga Smirnovay
Ekaterina Borchenko
Maria Khoreva
Vasilieva
Yulia Makhalina
Viktoria Tereshkina
Olesya Novikova
Egenia Obraztsova
Dudinskaya
Ulyana Lopatkiva
Anastasia Volochkova
Margarita Kullik
For me, personally, it’s hard to compare these dancers or to identify which qualities mark them as the students of a particular teacher. If I remember correctly, even professor Kovaleva couldn’t pinpoint exactly what sets her students apart or why her “signature” is so recognisable... I am curious to know what others think. I also don’t like comparing dancers, and it’s especially difficult in this case. You can’t compare Lopatkina and Vishneva. Despite coming from the same school and having a superb technical base, these two ballerinas are unique individuals. Does this say something about how different their teachers were? Or maybe they were both lucky enough to have teachers who recognised and nurtured their individuality?
You can learn more about how she teachers and which methods she uses from this video (English), and I think that answers some questions:
youtube
-
I believe that the personality of the teacher also plays a role in forming the student. For example, Ulyana Lopatkina noted that Dudinskaya was a strong woman and an optimist, and she worked to instil these same qualities in her students. Udalenkova has a rough (to put it lightly) childhood and youth, and is known to be quite tough on her students. Sadly, I know very little about Vasilieva – the one teacher I am most interested in.
-
This is one of the toughest questions I’ve received because it concerns Volochkova. The thing is, I have nothing nice to say about Volochkova, so answering this question poses a challenge. I try to avoid writing about people I strongly dislike. Also, there is a group of people who tend to leap to Voloshkova’s defence and I foresee getting some angry emails.
You asked me what happened to Volochkova. The answer is pretty short: stupidity and alcohol. Volochkova hay have been a decent dancer very early on in her career, but by the time she gained serious fame she was more interested in celebrity lifestyle than anything else.
In terms of the “Swan Lake” debut, Volochkova’s contemporaries have two words to say on the matter: casting couch. And while I dismiss such statements as a general rule, in this case I actually believe it. The Mariinsky’s management at the time was, by all accounts, hella corrupt and got up to all sorts of shady nonsense. Add to this the fact that ballet students in Russia have historically been targeted by creepy older men (even Keenan Kampa recalls this from her time at VBA) and you get a pretty toxic mix. To be clear, if this is indeed the case, I do not blame Volochkova for what happened. She was a teenager. In some ways Volochkova is a tragic figure, but she’s also made a lot of very bad choices and has never really accepted responsibility for her actions. I actually don’t know how one teacher can produce two dancers like Lopatkina and Volochkova. Literally night and day.
-
I’m actually glad that Lopatkina didn’t dance “Swan Lake” straight out of the gate. She had the time to develop as an artist, spent some years in the corps and wasn’t rushed to perform huge roles. I think that’s the healthier way.
