1975 Triumph Dolomite Sprint Competition Saloon
Registration no. not registered
Chassis no. VA4895DL
• Formerly owned by the late Robert Brooks
• Raced by Lord March and Marino Franchitti among others
• Many-time participant in the Goodwood Members' Meeting's Gerry Marshall Trophy
• Prepared by Phillip Venables and formerly by Setford Racing
• FIA HTP valid until the end of 2029
When British Leyland decided to revive Triumph's motor sports programme in 1974, preparing the Dolomite Sprint for rallying and circuit racing would be the Special Tuning department's first task. Introduced in June 1973, the Sprint version of the Dolomite four-door saloon featured an innovative, award-winning design of cylinder head in which the 2.0-litre engine's 16 valves were opened by a single camshaft rather than the customary two.

Dario Franchitti to Make Race of Remembrance Debut
Mission Motorsport, the charity that supports the rehabilitation and employment of former military personnel, has announced a star line up in the unique Race of Remembrance at Anglesey circuit.
Four-times IndyCar Champion Dario Franchitti MBE joins a Mission Motorsport-run squad, partnering with his brother Marino Franchitti, racing journalist Dickie Meaden and Ferrari Challenge UK Champion Jamie Clarke. This formidable line-up also includes charity beneficiary Sophie Burt who will be making her racing debut at the Race of Remembrance.
Sophie Burt joined the Army in 2007 and having gained her HGV 1 licence at 18 was posted to military logistics in support of the British Army in Germany. In late 2009 she spent six months in Kandahar on Operation HERRICK where her camp was under mortar and small arms fire daily. Returning to Germany in 2010 she was posted to 6 Supply Regiment in Gutersloh where she fulfilled a variety of roles. As a mark of her ability and professionalism, she was promoted to Corporal in 2013 aged just 23.
Health issues including PTSD meant she was forced to surrender her driving licence in 2016, isolating her from friends and family, and was downgraded and signed off from work. She battled to recover and came to Mission Motorsport in early 2017 where, she says, “I found a new family that helped me focus and gave me hope and quite honestly saved my life.” In January 2018 she drove in the Live Action Arena at Autosport in front of thousands.
Dario Franchitti is a four-time IndyCar Series champion (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011), a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 (2007, 2010, 2012) and winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona (2008). Following an injury from a racing accident in 2013, Franchitti announced his retirement from racing and became an adviser for Chip Ganassi Racing and co-commentator for Formula E.
Dario returned to motor racing, albeit as an amateur, at the 2019 Goodwood Revival – the Race of Remembrance is the second race since his comeback. The squad will be driving a Mazda MX-5 prepared and run by Mission Motorsport employees and charity beneficiaries.
Marino began a successful racing career in the late 90s. He won the GTO Championship in British GT, raced for numerous factory teams including Panoz, Acura and Ford, and has raced at Le Mans on multiple occasions. He’s the 2013 ALMS LMP2 Champion and took overall victory in the prestigious 12-hours of Sebring in 2014. He continues to race sports cars at the highest level and finds the time to be an official development driver for Singer – the brand that restores and modifies ultra-high-end Porsches.
“It’s a real honor to race with Sophie and Mission Motorsport,” says Dario Franchitti. “I have a great appreciation for the charity and while I’ve never raced at Anglesey before I can’t wait to get out there.”
Marino Franchitti added: “There is no event like the Race of Remembrance. It really does make a huge difference, and I can’t wait to join my brother and Sophie in this year’s race.”
James Cameron, CEO, Mission Motorsport stated: “I’m still pinching myself. To have Dario, Marino, Dickie and Jamie join Sophie in a team run by Mission Motorsport will not only make a huge difference to her but also shine a light on a unique event that truly aids the recovery journey of so many others.”
Richard Meaden, co-founder of evo magazine and one of the most respected motoring writers in the world, is also a successful racer – with a win at the Goodwood Revival on his CV. He has also competed in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
“It’s a pleasure to share the car with Dario, Marino and Jamie – but most importantly with Sophie. This shows just how effective Mission Motorsport is in assisting those who most need it,” says Meaden.
Clarke, the 2019 Ferrari Challenge UK champion, swaps a mid-engined supercar for a front engine sports car but is equally relishing the challenge: “To be in a team that’s crewed by Mission Motorsport and to share a car with Sophie is a real honor.”
The 12-hour Race of Remembrance hosts over 50 teams, taking place at the Anglesey Circuit in North Wales over the weekend of 9-10th November. Mission Motorsport will be running four of these teams, crewed by over 40 charity beneficiaries in a variety of roles across the event – all of whom are working towards individual recovery goals.
Now in its sixth year, the Race of Remembrance is the culmination of the Charity’s sporting year and raises awareness for the recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by military operations. The race is suspended at 11am on Remembrance Sunday for a unique pitlane remembrance service, then restarted to its eventual climax at approximately 1500 on the same day.

The "Brat Pack" Max Papis, Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti, Greg Moore
Dario is now a senior member of the paddock, an advisor for Ganassi and coach, often more like a father/uncle figure, to their new young drivers. But in his youth in the 1990’s he was a wild child, a member of Cart’s “Brat Pack”, prone to staying up all night partying yet still winning races. He almost won the championship in 1999 but lost in the finale only to be told after the race that his best friend, and fellow member of the “Brat Pack”, Greg Moore had died.
He made the switch to IRL which became Indycar, in 2003, although injuries and recovering from those injuries kept him out of the car most of that year. He recovered and then began the epic prank era at Andretti Green races with his teammates on the way to his first Indy 500 win and his first Indycar championship in 2007. He decided to give NASCAR a try in 2008.
(We don’t talk about the NASCAR year)
He came back at Ganassi in 2009 and proceeded to win three championships in a row (and two more Indy 500s) while becoming the elder statesman of the series. But all of this success was not without sorrow and near disaster. The loss of Dan Wheldon hit him hard. He and his former teammate were still close friends. Another crash and the subsequent injures forced him into retirement in late 2013
He is a prime example of why we don't leave decisions on their fitness to race up to the drivers anymore, suffering more than his fair share of injuries in his career (see list above) and continuing to race when he definitely should not have.. One might call it a lack of survival instinct, which to be honest, most drivers lack, but Dario lacks it to an alarming degree. He is at risk of permanent paralysis and brain damage in the event of another major crash, yet still races vintage/historic cars on occasion, particularly at Goodwood.
I would be remiss not to mention his Scottish accent, thick dark hair that is silvering at the temples and still fit physique. He’s lost none of the charm of his youth and perhaps gained more now at the age of 50.

First-Ever BDC Grand Prix! Plus How We Made It Happen
Welcome to the first MotorTrend Best Driver’s Car Grand Prix: six of the best road cars racing wheel to wheel on WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Why? Well, we got to thinking that although the data taken from our hot laps with Randy Pobst is fascinating, multiple laps with other cars in close proximity might yield very different results.
youtube
Sometimes Randy emerges from a contender sweating. It’s taken every ounce of his skill to extract the optimum time. Think of the McLaren 720S last year. Could that pace be replicated with the added pressure of other cars sharing track space and also right on the limit? Maybe the strain would start to show on the cars, too. Sure, those impressive-looking brakes might endure an out lap, hot lap, in lap cycle, but what about a longer session and without running in clean, cool air?
The MotorTrend Best Driver’s Car Grand Prix would be all about consistency, confidence, and endurance. It sounded like a hell of a lot of fun, too. Amazingly, the car companies we asked all approved of this damn-fool stunt and consented to our running more than $1 million in sheetmetal around the track simultaneously.
The rules are simple. Three laps, with the grid run in reverse order, fastest car at the back, slowest car in pole position.
Our front row is the much-hyped Toyota GR Supra driven by three-time Formula Drift Champion and Drift This co-host Chris Forsberg, beside the 715-hp Aston Martin DBS Superleggera driven by endurance racer and 12 Hours of Sebring winner Marino Franchitti.
Next back are the Jaguar Project 8 and Shelby Mustang GT350 nestled alongside each other piloted by Axel Stein and Patryk Mikiciuk of the German and Polish affiliates of MotorTrend, respectively. This is an international Grand Prix, after all.
Want more 2019 Best Driver’s Car content on the Supra, Mustang Shelby GT350, Urus, and the rest of the BDC fleet? Get the full story HERE, and watch all the Best Driver’s Car videos you can handle HERE.
In row three, hailing all the way from Georgia, is our very own Randy Pobst in the Porsche 992 Carrera S. Finally, there’s me, the token Brit, in a flame-spitting McLaren 600LT. (Sorry, no Senna. McLaren wisely had second thoughts but sent along a proper substitute as an apology.) I’m way off the back of the grid to make things as “fair” as possible. Yeah, someone doesn’t want me to win.
We have front-, mid-, and rear-engine contenders, driven by drifters, racers, and motor journalists; more than 3,200 hp generated by six-, eight-, and 12-cylinder engines; and the simply awesome Laguna Seca as our playground.
This is the MotorTrend Best Driver’s Car Grand Prix. Watch it only on MotorTrend On Demand!

Ford GT key players reveal favorite memories as program ends
The program earned 19 wins across the four years, including two triumphs at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona (2017 and ’18) and one at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2016).
Interestingly, although the Ford GT never conquered the 12 Hours of Sebring, the engine devised for the car did, when Ganassi’s Riley-Ford Ecoboost won overall in 2014, driven by Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Marino Franchittiwon the…

Race Car Driver Marino Franchitti’s Thoughts on the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera
Over Marino Franchitti’s racing career, he’s driven some pretty serious race cars. After he cut his teeth in 996-era Porsche 911 GT2-RSs and Ferrari 360 Modena GTCs, he’d later go on to win the 12 Hours of Sebring twice piloting Honda and Riley-Ford prototypes, and race in Le Mans behind the wheel of the Ford GT and the unforgettable Nissan DeltaWing. Given his experience with race cars, we tossed him the keys to a brand-new 715-hp 2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and caught up with him after his laps to see what he thought.
MotorTrend: What’d you think of driving the DBS and the race and just in general?
Franchitti: I’ve driven the Aston Martin DB11, so I had some preconceived ideas about the DBS, which weren’t honestly that great. You know Matt Becker [formerly of Lotus, now Aston’s chief engineer] has been at Aston there for a while, and he’s had a hand in the handling of this car, and from the first lap of the DBS this morning, I couldn’t believe that there’s any architecture shared with the DB11, they’re so different. You wouldn’t even know that it’s a turbo—it’s just got that big V-12 torque. It’s just a lovely place to be. Love that driving position, the steering wheel…

MT: You like the squircle?
MF: I do! I’ve always liked it. I don’t really think about the shape—I’m used to really weird-shaped steering wheels. All I think about is the grip, which I love, the position, and sort of how natural it is for me to turn them up sideways.
MT: You also had the chance to race the DBS against some other high-performance street cars for a secret editorial project. How’d the Aston do there?
MF: The race, first of all, was a huge amount of fun, but the car really held its own. I kind of got bogged down a little bit behind the Ford, but I think the DBS had the legs on that over a lap. The Aston really held its own, and it shouldn’t here. It’s a grand tourer. It’s made for eating continents, not for flying around a really tight and twisty track like Laguna Seca, but it still did it really well. I felt myself sort of getting more and more engaged with it every single lap, and I just wanted to keep driving it. I think they did a wonderful job with it. I think it’s good news for the future of Aston to see where they’re going with chassis development.
MT: Especially considering the cars they’re coming out with, like the Valkyrie.
MF: Yeah! I think obviously Matt Becker is a genius. And you drive the DBS, and you’re, like, OK, [Becker’s] thought of so positively for a reason. You see it straight away. Night and day difference between old Aston and new. As I said, I wasn’t expecting that much having driven the DB11. I had low expectations, but you can’t compare them; they are completely different cars. Really nice.
MT: One favorite thing about the DBS?
MF: Well, the torque. I mean, it just moves the air. It’s unbelievable.
MT: Least favorite thing? Or, one thing that you would change?
MF: I’d probably put a wider tire on the rear. I’d give it some more tire only because I’m a bit scared. I mean, you get dialed in, but at first it’s intimidating!
