Defenseman for the Nashville Predators
Hometown: Kanata, Ontario, Canada
What is something most people don't know about you?
I am an avid reader and writer. I spend a lot of time reading while traveling for hockey. My grandfather fought in WWII, and I have a particular affinity for history from both World Wars and the interwar period.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Becoming a father. Nothing has been more fulfilling for me. Sure, I am a hockey player, but my real job is being a dad and a husband, and I love it more than anything.
What is an organization you're affiliated with and why is it important to you?
Hockey is For Everyoneis an initiative that is particularly close to me. Using our platforms as professional athletes and as a league to advocate for making our communities more inclusive and accepting is something that my wife and I knew we could get behind. Sport should be a safe and welcoming place no matter your race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or level of physical or mental ability. Additionally, the Oasis Center, located in Nashville, is another group that is special. Although opportunities for face-to-face work were limited during the pandemic, the Oasis Center has an amazing mission and some fantastic programs for youth in our community, and my wife and I are grateful to be able to support them.
Boro IS beautiful inside and out, but also I’m cackling that a magazine included this guy ⬇️ in their “25 Most Beautiful People” issue

"The NHL's Hockey Is Everyone initiative, it's a catchy tagline that we pay lip service to, but to me, it's pretty black and white - if you're going to say Hockey Is For Everyone, then it truly has to be for everyone."

I think it really cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to have strong LGBT allies on NHL teams. I was watching a Thomas Chabot interview from last season’s Pride Night and he actually wore Pride Tape during the game and when asked why, the first thing he said was basically “Mark Borowiecki”. Having those loud voices like Mark Borowiecki and Anders Nilsson in the room really makes a difference. I mean, look at the Sens’ Hockey is for Everyone videos this year; there wasn’t a single reference to the LGBT community, where last year it was like a central issue. Having those allies in the room makes their teammates take notice of the issue, and encourages them to speak out.
I think those two guys are great examples of LGBT allies too, because they don’t just speak out to the media or on twitter, but they have a clear impact on their teammates.
