OBC!Mark, I was transsexual female-to-male and deaf. I came out to my sister at 16 but knew something was 'wrong' at 12. Roger and I were roommates in college, freshman to senior years. I had a huge thing for him but kept it a secret for years. When Maureen and I were dating, she and Roger were the first two I taught sign to, followed with Benny and Collins. When Joanne came along, she already knew a little bit, but not much.

The main thing I want to praise Jamie Parker for is how he does fit right in with a stellar cast. From the clips I've watched of the OBC to compare, these characters were originally played far more to "type"—J. Spencer has the mannerisms and almost even the voice of a suburban American father from a screwball-comedy television show from the 1950's. Jennifer Damiano and Aaron Tveit on some level know that they're in a rock musical/concert. That's definitely a directorial choice, and didn't put me off liking this show when I first heard it through or saw it staged.

This new cast is far more conversational. Caissie Levy injects emotion and personality in every line so much that I almost forget that she's singing. Eleanor Worthington-Cox "is" Natalie Goodman in a way that other, excellent actresses who have played this role, still can't quite mark that inspired alignment.

And after Diana puts the steel chair down, this Dan says "—who I am!" with the exact vehemence of somebody that's had a chair almost thrown at him and still isn't going to file for divorce because he's going to check if their daughter's all right.

I was trying to pinpoint why I’m so sad about the cast members who left today, and I think it’s a lot of things.

This show and this cast has become… most of what I’ve thought about since the cast recording came out in May. Its become such a huge part of my life and my identity. Knowing that today marks the end of an era in my life in a certain way- the end of the principle obc, the start of a whole new cast coming in, is both exciting and really heartbreaking. I think that’s a large part of it tbh. I've never been a fan of a show while it has its obc like this, and seeing the end of that is just crazy

her clothing design was already laid out for her so i left it virtually unchanged, asides from the pattern itself. imagine wearing clothes w a print of your best friends hair . that is rumpleteazer

even though 1 of her 3 words are impressionable, i think she is smarter than she lets on. i also think skimbleshanks is her dad. she'd be about 21 in human years

PIGTAILS JERRIE AS WELL, BITCH ! i saw a jerrie w pigtails after i drew this and i felt so vindicated. i also based his design directly on 2019 mungojerrie because ommgggg transgender calico? trans little calico? i thought he deserved some pearls too. as well as a bell collar! it makes cats sneakier.

his clothing design is left unchanged too, asides from some fluff. he is also wearing a print of his best friends hair . smile 😃

coricopat is pretty close to their replica design—the biggest difference being that the red in their design is warmer/purpler. that and the silver collar! i also had no idea what i was doing with her fit, so expect it to change in the upcoming art i do of him. i just wanted something gothy and flowy

hes also based on thalia, the muse of comedy. to keep the greek mythology theme going, and because i thought it was funny, and because (2x) i like... The Gimmick

WELCOME TO MY TWISTED WORLD. i really tried to keep tugger as cis guys i really did. but the thrall of a visually transgender tugger was too much to ignore. i already explained a lot of his design choices in my first posted drawing of it but like... blauhh... thigh garter, heart, golden whiskers/lashes. they are there. i also made his makeup a wee more theatrical w/ white on the chin to visually separate him from partridges tugger

i also decided to base his fur more on his obc design. like. terrence mann tugger. platinum blond spotted mane and head fur and such. i think it looks really good

im trying to hit the sweet spot between the goofy/serious/whiny/promiscuous portrayals of the him..... the man contains multitudes, you see. hed also be like 24 in human years and it goes without saying that hes one of deuts sons

opinions on the west end cast of the great gatsby

They did the funniest thing possible for the Gatsby casting. And I don't hate it- I think Jamie will do at minimum a solid job, at least vocally (idk shit about him as an actor). I was a little underwhelmed by the performance at the announcement celebration, but it's not like he doesn't have time to settle into it more. He's for sure the weakest member of the JD to Gatsby pipeline, though.

On a more enthusiastic note, I LOVE Frances as Daisy. She's going to be phenomenal, and I am begging bootleggers to do the lord's work for Beautiful Little Fool at the very least.

From what I heard, Corbin Bleu was a great Seymour, and vocally, I like him for Nick a lot. I think he's going to be really good. Can't say I'd bet on him being spectacular, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong.

Then there's John Owen-Jones as Wolfsheim. Again, absolutely hilarious casting. Men famous for playing Javert and Jean Valjean (albeit in different productions) are gonna be Wolfsheim at the same time. Honestly, he's not someone I would have considered for it, but I will never doubt his ability to absolutely crush anything he does. I'm excited to find out how his very different voice from Eric Anderson is gonna play with Shady.

Unfortunately, I don't know the rest of the cast well enough to have any opinions worth giving.

TL;DR- I'm overall very positive about it, with a couple question marks about if they'll live up to the mind-blowing OBC.

we're almost to the halfway mark, so i thought i'd share another progress update on this little (big) project!! (previous update)

i've almost finished drawing half of all the assets (according to my spreadsheet) and then we can start assembling them into a "book." the bulk of the assets are characters/costumes, but i've also completed several props and started working on some backgrounds as well. I need to decide how the book will be laid out before i make much more progress on those, though. i've been trying to hold off on finishing the principal cast because i think saving them for ~dessert~ will keep me motivated to power through the rest, but i'm so anxious to get to them because i want to play with them in photoshop and put them on their associated backgrounds like little paper dolls 🙈 so that's why ballet tuxedo!dmitry doesn't exist yet, and why i've yet to color the rest of anya's act ii wardrobe.

anyway. progress in my workflow is hardly ever linear, but you can kind of see how i approach the rendering process from these images, i hope. the drawing carries the weight of the image so that step always takes the longest, since getting the likeness, the proportions, the folds, and the expressions right is the most important. if any of that looks off no skillful painting or rendering can save it.

and then i always color skin first because everything else (clothes, hair) goes on top of skin. you can see the color palette i'm using is the same for almost all of them, though act ii requires a few more saturated hues than act i (bright blue, some reds, and green every once in a while). coloring the rest in doesn't usually take very long. once the flats are down i go in for a final pass, laying down those patterns and textures that always give me a hard time lol. and then i clean up and recolor the line work and mark it as done! since i'm working digital i use alpha lock and clipping masks for that.

anya's act ii lineup. her phtk outfit is the only one i've marked complete (the linework on the others is still black and need just a few more touchups). I've yet to lay in the flats for the maroon travel coat because i think the drawing needs more work. i might change a few things on big red, maybe her expression, but i haven't decided yet.

dmitry's act ii lineup (sans tuxedo). he just needs a final pass on the first two on the left, and then his finale look is finished, because it's the same from act i :)

vlad's act ii lineup. he's almost done, just needs a final pass on the finale and phtk outfits.

lily's act ii lineup. i'm going to redo the pattern on her neva club dress (linda cho i love u but god) but otherwise she's all finished.

the dowager's act ii lineup. she's done! :) maybe i'll find something to pick at later but rn i'm marking her done lol.

petersburg citizens from rumor! i think these guys are all done. there are more people i could include, but there isn't enough variation on the costumes to make it worth it imo.

neva club patrons. the only two marked complete are the two on the left, sergei the doorman/the male server and count leopold. i still need to find a good reference for the female server lol.

the press! just the men for now lol. i used the obc program as a reference for this one, so i'll get the two ladies in soon :)

the hussies! i've marked it complete, but. we'll see if there's more adjustments i can make.

there's still more i've completed that's not pictured, but i'll definitely share more soon. act i is nearly finished entirely, which is cool, and the only big ensemble sheet i've yet to make much progress on is everyone in phtk. i may end up just drawing one or two people from that and then copying them with different patterns because, honestly, the shape of the dresses and suits are all very similar. hopefully that won't be boring to look at lol.
