I like imagining the policy changes to Nasa after Mark Watney's extended stay on Mars. Used to have 4 independent communication methods? Make it 8. Send enough food for 3 years now. Send so much duct tape. The rover needs to be able to recover from being rolled. The air locks between the rover, HAB and pop tents should all be interchangeable.
Also potatoes. I fully believe that every manned mission after The Martian will include potatoes, for sentimental reasons. I am equally sure that Mark absolutely hates that fact.
i love that andy weir never kills his protagonists. it would be so easy to. at so many points. by all means they Should be dead. mark gets stranded on mars and the planet works against him at every turn. jazz's suit fails on the surface of the moon and she feels herself begin to die. ryland is sent on a suicide mission then gives up his chance at return for his friend. they should all have died. multiple times in some cases. but they don't!!! because weir isn't writing tragedies, he's writing stories of hope and humanity. they survive even when it should be impossible for them to because of connection. simple as that.
I'm doing a series of "Best Character Named X" polls where all the characters have the same first name but are from completely different media, feel free to send in name/charcacter suggestions, I'm posting one poll a day, check my pinned post for active polls
I find it hilarious that Mark Watney and Ryland Grace are fairly similar in some ways (affectionate) but that one started with "I am pretty much fucked" and the other is a guy who unironically goes "holy moly"
people criticise the martian for being too hopeful a story, but that is the whole point!!!!!!!!!
the whole point is that we as a humanity have so much love in our hearts that we will make the impossible possible!!! it’s a love letter to the intelligence of our kind!!!!! of the human spirit!!!!
mark watney should have on all accounts died on that planet, but his sheer will, strength, hope, and determination kept him alive. the support of an entire world of people brought him home
