My portrait is of Rebecca Sugar ( @rebeccasugar ). Rebecca is one of my favorite artists, people, and the creator of Steven Universe (which is an animated cartoon series that airs on Cartoon Network that deals with love, family, emotions, life, and LGBTQIA* themes of acceptance and normalcy). I’ve wanted to make a portrait of her/them for a long time, for she herself is a Bisexual Nonbinary Woman who works with a diverse team of artists, animators, writers and singers to make this revolutionary show for kids and adults alike can all enjoy. She is one of my biggest inspirations as an artist, shows great representation of the LGBTQIA community in all of her work, and her show has also made cartoon history several times and still continues to do so; some examples are winning the “GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming” 2019 (doing so makes it the first animated show to do so), the “Peabody Award - Children & Youth” 2019, and is the first occurrence of a same-sex proposal and marriage wrapped together in a mainstream show for children. I have been watching the show since it first aired all the way back in 2013; Steven Universe has been my favorite show for its message of empathy, love, family, as well as the lovely animation, story, music, and art involved in it all. Rebecca Sugar is an amazing person who is passionate about her art, her beliefs, and is a kind person that has done so much for children and adults in the LGBTQIA community. It was an honor to capture her beautiful smile and emotion in my digital art piece and an honor to be in this show. I have never done anything like this event before, but I am proud to be a part of this community with so many amazing artists and people. *Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or questioning), Intersex, and Asexual (or allies) *
