Is it known where Henriette is buried? And is the grave or whatever still there or did it get destroyed or something? This question may sound creepy, I'm sorry about that but it kinda just popped in my head.
Hello @sophia-daria,
I do not find the question creepy at all, so never mind. On the contrary, thanks to your question I did find a true treasure dove while researching - not at all what I was looking for but a treasure nonetheless :-)
Sadly I can not give you a clear answer but I can make an “educated guess” if you permit me.
It seems as if Henriette’s death was registered in Marne-et-Seine. Marne-et-Seine is a French Department just east of Paris. I wrote “it seems”  (with a very strong emphasis) because the archives of Marne-et-Seine go back to the late 18th century and are almost completely digitalized. Still, I could not find a record of death for Henriette because the earliest documents I could find in the archive were from 1789 - so roughly 15 years after Henriette passed. There is however a listing on ancestry.com that is claimed to be Henriette’s record of death.
This document is registered as Marne, France death, 1547-1907. I do not have an ancestry membership and therefor no access to the document in question. I also would not necessarily call ancestry a reliable source. As it was the only clue I had at hand however, I started to do some digging that, in the end, led to some interesting finds about Frances geopolitical organisation. There is a river called Marne in France and there are today several Departments that are named after said river. Just east of Paris there is the Department Marne-et-Seine and east of Marne-et-Seine there is Marne. Both Departments have the large majority of their archival stock digitalized and accessible for the public.
Their documents however start all start around 1790.
Prior to the French Revolution, France was divided into Provinces. During the French Revolution, several reforms were enacted to ensure a smoother administrative body. The Provinces were re-modelled into Departments and these Departments were grouped into regions. The modern Department Marne-et-Seine was made up of the eastern part of the Province Ils-de-France (today also the name of the region that Marne-et-Seine belongs to) and some fragments of the Province Champagne. Marne, the other Department, was entirely constructed out of land from the Province Champagne. Why is that of any significance? According to this ominous record, some form of acknowledgement of Henriette’s death is supposed to be in the archives of Marne. I could not find anything in the archive itself and there was not a single trace of a document covering all the time from 1547 to 1907. I turned my attention to the archives of Marne-et-Seine. In Marne-et-Seine there is a little town called Courpalay and close to Courpalay is the Chateau La Grange-Blénau. La Fayette (with his family) lived at La Grange more or less continuously for 34 years since his return to France after his imprisonment and exile during the French Revolution. The Chateau belonged to his mother-in-law, the Duchess d’Ayen, who died under the Guillotine. After her death, her daughter Adrienne, La Fayette’s wife, inherited La Grange and after hers and La Fayette’s death their youngest daughter Virgenie took over ownership of the Chateau. La Fayette’s grandson by his son Georges Washington later assumed the position of prefect for the Department.
During La Fayette’s first trip to America, there were all sorts of rumours circulating that he had been wounded, killed, captured and what not. Adrienne later often hinted at the fact that her mother tried her best to shield her from these rumours so they would not distress her – especially since she was pregnant at the time. Maybe she did so by removing her daughter from Paris, from this busy, fast paste city with its gossip mills and instead stayed at La Grange. Maybe that is where Henriette died and maybe she is buried somewhere on the grounds of the Chateau as it was not uncommon to have a family vault on such properties. As I already said, this is only an “educated guess” and several factors have to be accounted for. First of all, we have to believe there is any merit to this listing on ancestry even though we (or I) have currently no access to the document and I am unable to find the original in the archives. This theory does also not account for the fact that the document is listed as from Marne and not Marne-et-Seine. This could be simply an error or some sort of shortening of the name. There may be also the possibility that the documents ended somehow up in Marne since the region of Marne-et-Seine where La Grange is located (to my understanding) formerly belonged to the Province of Champagne – just like Marne did.
There are many guesses and “maybes” in my answer but it is nonetheless the best answer I can give you at the moment. There are not any other significant clues as to the whereabouts of Henriette’s grave. None of the diarys/memoirs/letters/etc. ever mention a cemetery that the family was visiting and when Adrienne died there was also no indication that she would or could be buried somewhere close to her firstborn child.
Maybe someone with access to ancestry can have a look and share their insight but until then I can only present to you this (shaky) theory that Henriette may be buried at the grounds of La Grange or somewhere close by.
I hope that was helpful in some way and I hope you have/had a beautiful day!
