Heart Gold Soul Silver ~ 073/123 ~ Masakazu Fukuda

After I've posted long enough you'll see that the HeartGold SoulSilver era has a large percentage of my favorite cards in the TCG's history. This wonderful and fluffy friend, illustrated by Masakazu Fukuda, is no exception. This mareep almost seems like they escaped from a farm and have wandered away, just enjoying the sights. It certainly has a lot of nice things to look at.

One of the things I love most about the era of cards from Heart Gold and Soul Silver is how much unity went into the background art. Despite fairly disparate styles across the expansions, everybody seemed to have a natural inclination to lean into the designs, nature, architecture, and even colors as Johto (see my Kanto Dex Collection, entry 2, for another example from this era). Some sets don't do this as well, but every card truly feels like it belongs in this shared setting.

As a hardcore gen 2 fan, I'd like to imagine it's due to how well developed Johto feels as a region. It's always been my favorite place in the entire franchise. Plus they got Voltorb Flip, which is probably the best mini-game ever made, and the reason why I'm a picross addict today.

Best Quality: Extremely blue. Most artists who draw mareep tend to make the darker sections of their tail's and ear's much darker, closer to black or dark gray. Fukuda has chosen much closer colors, which gives the mareep a unique feel. The thick, sketchy lines also add a unique touch.
