That's tricky because when yb came out, ghost of you was being shoved in my face by Spotify, if was the first song from 4 of this recommend to you playlists, rightfully so cause I'm obsessed with it, but I only listen to it until Spotify was like, listen to this one too with want you back and I really liked that too, so I searched the album, but I only listen to it cause I had listened to slsp back in 2014 and didn't vibe with it at the time and just assumed that their old stuff was like that and didn't bother with it. Until the mytt album came out, cause I'm sucker for live stuff and I'm listening to it and I'm like, damn they're good and the only reason from it came on and I'm completely obsessed with that beginning and Michael was like "this one is an old one, it's called the only reason, sing it if you know it" and after I finished the album I searched for them and they have me on a chokehold since then lol

I'm trying to think of something that takes being good with delicate movements with your hands, cause I think Michael could be good at it cause of the guitar, but nothing that you could potentially get hurt cause he gives me a real clumsy vibe. I guess like crochet or knitting cause it's a great fidgeting activity and it's repetitive but not really and it's easy to be creative? I can see him getting excited doing a pokemon or something lol. 6. What fic is on your back burner, waiting to be written when you feel your skill matches its potential?

Oh jeez I have so many....(and now I have a WIP page to be judged about). I would say the invisible string lashton/malum fic that was based on the taylor swift song. About 5 times lashton meet over the years and the 1 time they do it right (like parties, coffee shops, friends, breaking up, meeting again, etc.). and then the malum side of the story. I have it mostly outlined in my head, I just have not taken the time to work on it ever. It's a heavy task and stuff so I haven't full worked on it. But one day I hope to.

Oh! also flower shop/tattoo shop au for lashton. And prince luke/stable boy ashton. yeah those are coming

11. Do you have any writing rituals you do before (or during when) you write?

I take a shower first, I drink some tea, and I put on a good playlist.

Although, when I wrote Stardust, I put on Daredevil on netflix and wrote the fic to that series because I love that series so sometimes I put on comfort shows for noise.

15. What are some of your favorite tropes to write? Do they match the ones you read?

I love: magic au, fantasy, pining, oblivious idiots in love, fluff, comfort, coffee shop aus. Basically, anything soft and fun I will write or read them I love them ALL

23. Would any of your stories make a good movie or TV series? Tell us about it, particularly what might stay the same or change?

Is it weird if I say Stardust? It's already a movie but I would LOVE to see like. a TV series to talk more about their time on the ship and falling in love. I would love to just see romance grow for sure.

OR the coffee shop Cake with the matchmaking. I'd probably some more silly little ways for Luke and Calum to matchmake Mashton. Add some more building romance for cake. Really, just pack on the rom com

First of all, some of these songs come from THIS playlist compiled by Maggie @calumsclifford over the years. Some of the explanations are things that we talked about when I first suggested these songs for her playlist back in the day.

1. Growing Pains by Neck Deep: THE mashton song to me!!!! this is my favorite Neck Deep song and I love the loud uninhibited guitar and drums in the original version (although my favorite version is the acoustic Dr. Martens performance). The steady support in "Don't bear the weight of the world on your shoulders/It's not too heavy/ I'll break my back so you can feel like someone's on your side" is very mashton, especially when reflecting on the manner in which they both opened up about their mental health back in the day. ashton didn't start opening up about his own mental health until after michael was getting a lot of attention for saying he went to therapy and it was getting overwhelming. maggie and i theorized that ashton starting to talk about his own was a way to help michael by shouldering part of the advocacy burden and taking some of that pressure and attention from him. then the lines "They don't know what we share in the briefest of moments/ I'm head over heels for the smallest components/ That light in your eye or that look on your face/ Secure in the fact that we both know our place" also feels SO Them, because I do think that their dynamic is pretty understated and played down publicly. They don't really ever "perform" their friendship, and because it's one of the more subtle ones that means that a lot of their dynamic is kind of passed by and overlooked, but they're both secure in it. And then, of course, the emphasis on music in these lyrics :)

2. Summertime by My Chemical Romance: you can run away with me any time you like :) michael and ashton both had BIG "gotta get out of this town" energy at the beginning, which is partly why they became the battery that was so instrumental in driving the band forward in the early days. they both risked a lot on the conviction that the band could be successful and they wouldn't be stuck in dead end jobs in their hometown, so songs about running away with another person make me think of them.

3. Don't Give Up On Me by Andy Grammer: "I will fight for you" with how protective they are of each other and always willing to defend, the idea of not giving up reflected in their relentless drive within the band and their music!

4. King and Lionheart by Of Monsters and Men: yeah just read maggie's and my explanation here

5. War Cry by The National Parks: the loyalty! the protectiveness! they will stay by each other's side!

6. Garden Song by Phoebe Bridgers: this one is mostly vibes but i like the idea of imperfect growth for both of them

7. Fix You by Coldplay: the gentle but all-encompassing support <3

8. Undeniable You by Jukebox the Ghost: okay i'll be honest this is mostly because i wrote a fic at maggie's behest (can you tell that maggie was instrumental to my understanding of mashton back in the day)

9. The Party by Maisie Peters: okay! way back in the day (years ago at this point!) I had a conversation with @clumsyclifford about whether this was a malum or a mashton song. Mashton won out for a few reasons! The line "I'll take your chaos and your crooked in a heartbeat" feels very mashton, with that sort of unconditional acceptance that they have, but the lyrics also imply that they seem like an odd couple to outsiders, which i think is reflected in where mashton ranks in popularity in the fandom. I am also a HUGE sucker for the idea that mashton feels like they've known each other since childhood. It's one of my favorite ways of portraying how comfortable they are with each other in my writing (I know there's a line in Puzzle Pieces that references that), and with the history that luke/michael/calum have, I like to think that Ashton doesn't feel any different even though he came around a few years later. The line "People ask how long have I loved you, no comment/ 'Cause probably since I was seven and you were eight/ We didn't know each other, but baby, it was fate" is SUCH a mashton line to me because of it

10. Small Hands by Radical Face: bruh just read these lyrics they make me want to stare at the ceiling and maybe cry. the support! the love! the conviction that they will get through this and that the narrator is here for whatever the subject needs! "And if you wind up in the dark again/ Just turn and call my name/ And if the fire in your chest goes out/ Well I'll hold you all the same/ And if you need to take this out on me/ Well you know I won't complain"

11. peace by Taylor Swift: this is one of those "imperfect love" songs that i like. even so, there's the unending loyalty in this one, and the lines "All these people think love's for show/ But I would die for you in secret" definitely support the idea i talked about earlier with how a lot of their relationship is understated and private. folklore in general is also a mashton album though

12. Honeybee by The Head and the Heart: big "you're my person despite our hardships" energy that i love

13. For Me, It's You by Train: honestly? i just wanted to include a train song. i like the way that so many train songs are kind of casual love? understated? the way that this is sung is so relaxed, almost lazy, and yet you have the immensely touching "for me, it's you" sentiment. i like to think that's mashton's vibe

14. The Edge of Tonight by All Time Low: i love the idea that they find solace in each other and that they act as emotional anchors!!! the idea of keeping each other safe!!!!

15. Float by HARBOUR: "Understated, overwhelming/ Life is always best when you're around" their dynamic is understated but that doesn't mean it isn't profound!!!! the safety of being able to step off the ledge with each other and trusting that you'll float instead of fall!

16. Floral & Fading by Pierce the Veil: okay full discretion part of the reason this one is on the list is because it's on a fic playlist for a mashton series i'm working on. also though, the idea of running away together! i'm sure you can tell some kind of big touchstone ideas i have about mashton from these song selections and what parts i point out lol

17. Favorite Place by All Time Low ft. The Band Camino: another person being a refuge! another person who is fiery and can't be tamed but that you can still love and be loved by! also "you're everything I love about/ The things I hate in me" giving big "opposite ends of the battery" energy with the idea that they're so similar but seeing those traits in a different person completely flips your view to the opposite.

18. Come to Me by The Goo Goo Dolls: i just wanted a goo goo dolls one :) but also! once again! the idea of a safe place in another person! physically coming together!

19. My Kind by Alessia Cara: a lot of my justification of this one is the line "Really wish I knew you sooner than my 20s" with that idea that mashton feels like they met as kids and wishes that they had. there's also so much about nostalgia and growing up in this song, and we know that they had their growing pains and got to experience those moments with each other and have grown into very unique and distinct individuals. the chorus is also very much them as individuals, and the lines "I wish somebody would've told me I'd be here now/ 'Cause this kind of life is one to sing about" definitely feels like them looking back at where they came from and where they ended up. i love the optimism of older mashton. (i love the optimism of all older 5sos, i love that despite their challenges and pressures they all seem to be absolutely thriving and happy)

20. It Won't Be Like This Forever by Neck Deep: I wanted to bookend the playlist with Neck Deep and this one is a great, optimistic look on their journey together! The equal reassurance that things will get better! The way that mashton constantly raises each other up!

i would love to read a mashton fic based on vegas, which is an idea that has been in my head since you sent it in for the playlist! i particularly like the lyrics “from coast to coast, I’ll make the most / of every second I’ve been giving with this crowd, / without a doubt, you’re all I dream about” but i would be happy no matter what you wrote

right okay well i have plans to one day write a longer better vegas fic but im capitalizing on the fact that you sent me specific lyrics from the song and just writing around those lyrics so. for the moment this will have to be enough im sorry maggie u deserve more

Michael loves performing more than most things.

There are certain people who take precedence — his band, for one, although that feels a little bit like cheating because his band are the reason he can perform — and his family, of course, and a case could be made for Niall Horan, and there are also a few things here and there — a chocolate milkshake at an American diner at three in the morning smack in the middle of the Northeast, the signed-by-Billie-Joe Father Of All… limited edition vinyl framed on his wall at home that’s been played exactly once, a proper pint from the bar they went to when they first arrived in London.

By and large, though, performing beats all. 

There’s an energy that is absolutely unmatched, and no matter how many times interviewers ask, Michael will never be able to put into words the way it feels to play to a crowd who are shouting your lyrics at the top of their lungs. Nobody would understand how it’s possible to get onstage feeling tired and grow more alive the longer you play, feeding off the ardor of the people, entirely detached from the usual concerns of whether or not you’ll remember how to play your part. Michael’s a good guitarist, but onstage he becomes something else, something fucking massive, a piece of something much bigger than himself.

The high lasts only for about a minute after he comes offstage, and then everything else hits him at once; the exhaustion, the sweat, all the notes he’d missed, the pounding in his head from the screams that are dulled but not deafened by the in-ears. They all crash at different times but they always crash soon after the show ends, and Michael’s usually first.

So there are a lot of reasons Michael doesn’t want to come offstage. And if anyone asks, he can offer a wide range of these answers, anything about the rush of performing, about not wanting to feel the weariness of the tour just yet, about feeling more sure about this show than anything in his life, and those wouldn’t even really be lies. They just wouldn’t be the whole truth.

Most of the reason why Michael loves to be onstage is the person sitting at the drum kit.

Ashton is twirling his drum sticks, effortless the way he always is during shows, a broad smile over his face while Luke sets them up for their next-to-last song. Michael takes the opportunity to tune up a little bit and watch Ashton. It’s one of his most favorite things ever, just to watch; he’d stare at Ashton forever if he could and still not have had enough.

Ashton glances up, catching Michael’s eye before Michael can look away, so Michael saunters over to the drums.

“How are you feeling?”

Michael gives a thumbs up. “On top of the world,” he says truthfully. His fingertips are buzzing with what could be electricity, and his guitar feels so light it could almost be floating. “You?”

“Same,” Ashton says, without faltering in his grin. “You’re sounding great.”

“You messed up a few times, but we’ll discuss it after the show,” Michael replies, smirking. Ashton flips him off. “I’m kidding. You sound awesome. Amazing. Like always.”

“Not always. I sound pretty bad sometimes.”

“Only when you’re singing in the shower.”

“I don’t sing in the shower!”

Michael holds up an air-microphone. “Sweet Caroline, bah-bah-bah!”

“That was one fucking time!”

“Yeah, and I’m gonna remember it forever, and laugh at you whenever I hear the song. So thank you.”

Ashton rolls his eyes; somehow he hasn’t stopped smiling, and in fact his smile is even wider. “You should probably get back to your station,” he says. “I think Luke’s stalling to start the song.”

As if on cue, Michael hears, “Oi, Mike! Is it social hour? Are we playing a show?”

Michael grins and winks at Ashton, then slides smoothly back to his microphone. “Sorry, sorry,” he says. “Ashton and I were just plotting how best to destroy you.”

“We’re thinking of putting you on a cooking show,” Ashton puts in from his mic. Michael loves him so much.

The crowd laughs. Luke just rolls his eyes, fond and unable to be cross when they’re playing a show, when this many people are here just for them, to hear their music, and across the stage Calum blows Michael a kiss. He catches it in the air and presses it to his heart; Calum grins and gives him the OK sign with his fingers.

“Anyway,” Luke says pointedly, and then he carries on with the show, introducing She’s Kinda Hot with very little additional preamble, and Michael starts to play it — the riff had been hard the first couple of times but now he could do it in his sleep, so instead of overthinking every note, his eyes roam the crowd, several thousand — a number Michael doesn’t remember but is absurdly high — people here to see them, to see him, some who have put in countless hours listening to their album and making signs and buying merchandise from them already. Michael feels like he’ll burst from the love, and wonders if it’s coming from him or from them. Or if there’s even a difference. They love his band, but not as much as he loves his band.

Ashton’s solo is his favorite part of this song. Not because he has a crush on Ashton. Musically, it’s the most fun, and Ashton has a really great voice for it, and he likes the little call-and-response part, and, okay, also because he has a crush on Ashton and this is basically his free chance to gaze in wonder while Ashton sings.

When the solo rolls around Michael turns his body to watch Ashton, shamelessly drinking in the sight; Ashton, a bandana barely keeping back his sweat-soaked hair and a glistening sheen of perspiration all down his face, neck, and arms, muscles tensing as he plays, tank top sticking to his chest. The lights from the stadium reflect strangely off his skin, giving him a gleaming aura that has Michael blinking sight back into his vision. 

Ashton is everything. He really, really is.

Halfway through the solo he catches Michael’s eye for just a second, and Michael doesn’t look away, caught up in the moment. Ashton smiles so wide his face could break from it and Michael feels that smile right down to his toes. The warmth stays in his chest, unbroken, untouchable.

They stumble off-stage, all four reaching out for full water bottles before they have to go back on for the encore. Michael’s off last — he’s standing farthest from where they come on — and the three others are already gasping out breaths between long chugs of water as he takes his own.

“Well, you all sound terrible, and I sound great,” Calum declares, one arm so tightly around Luke’s shoulders that Michael would be hard-pressed to try and separate them. Not that he’d ever feel compelled to. Ashton comes over and slings an arm over Michael’s shoulders, too, and Michael immediately squirms.

“Gross,” he says, “you’re all sweaty.”

“That’s how you like me,” Ashton says, pressing a kiss to Michael’s cheek.

“No PDA before we finish the encore,” Luke says loudly, pointing an accusing finger at the two of them.

“You’re just jealous that Ashton kissed me and not you,” Michael says. “Ashton, go kiss Luke. He’s feeling left out.”

“I don’t want to kiss Luke,” Ashton says, affronted. 

“I’ll kiss Luke,” Calum says. Before any of them can say anything about it, Calum pulls Luke’s face towards him and kisses him square on the mouth.

Luke looks like he’s been hammered between the eyes when Calum pulls away. “You’re such a sneaky little shit,” he says. “I have to go sing, you know.”

“I have to sing too!” Calum protests. 

“Wait a minute,” Michael says, feeling like perhaps he’s missed something. “How — what?”

“Does this mean I have to kiss you now?” Ashton asks Michael, a glint in his eye. “Because I’m not strictly opposed.”

“Stop it,” Michael says. “They just kissed!”

“They’re adults,” Ashton says.

“You’re not strictly opposed?” Michael says belatedly. “The fuck’s that mean? Are you for or against?”

“Shit,” Luke says, handing off his water bottle. “Gotta go back on. Encore time encore time encore time!” He races onstage, Calum in tow, and Michael groans.

“Worst band in the world!” he says as Ashton gives him one final, cheeky look before sliding away and returning to the stage. Michael follows after, playing the intro to She Looks So Perfect, which is as natural as breathing at this point.

The song goes well, and Michael remembers, having temporarily grown distracted, how fucking good this show has been, how the energy of the crowd is building up under his skin, making him practically vibrate with it despite the steady hands on his guitar. When the song ends, they take their bow and then head backstage. Michael finally takes a towel to wipe himself clean of sweat; the other boys do the same. Ashton gets two towels, because he’s always the grossest.

“So?” Michael asks, loping over to where Ashton is leaning against the wall, drying himself off. “For or against?”

“For or against what?” Ashton says innocently, but his face breaks into a ridiculous smile and he reaches to clap a hand around the back of Michael’s neck. “For, obviously.”

“Oh,” Michael says dimly, blood roaring in his ears. “Okay. Good. I mean, I hadn’t said for or against what, exactly. For all you know you’ve just agreed to my insidious plot to destroy the band from the inside or change our sound to EDM or something.”

“I’m in,” Ashton says immediately. “I’ll take down Luke, you get Calum.”

“I can’t take down Calum,” Michael says, forgetting momentarily that they’re not actually planning the downfall of the band. “He’s been my best friend for so long. I’m pretty sure that would be in violation of the bro code.”

“Okay, but taking down Luke wouldn’t?” Ashton asks, raising an eyebrow. “Fine. I’ll get Calum and you get Luke. Meet back here.”

“Wait, hold on,” Michael says, and picks back up the thread. “We’re not actually plotting the band’s destruction. You were going to kiss me, I think.”

“Was I? I don’t really recall.”

“You were. You said you were for it.”

“I believe my words were not strictly opposed.”

“You said for, obviously, like twenty seconds ago. Like literally twenty.”

“Hmm,” Ashton hums, tipping their foreheads together. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

Ashton gives his biggest smile yet. Michael feels the corners of his own mouth tug upward to mirror it, and Ashton leans in, presses a gentle kiss to Michael’s lips, and pulls away. Michael’s buzzing all over, head full of AshtonAshtonAshtonAshton.

“Oh, hmm,” he murmurs, a little speechless, midway between the adrenaline high of the show and the total post-performance crash. Heavily leaning into Ashton, he says, “I’m gonna fall asleep in like five minutes but we will definitely continue this when I’m not about to be dead on my feet.”

Ashton pats his shoulder reassuringly. “I’m not strictly opposed to that.”

Michael smiles and decides: there are few things he loves more than performing, but Ashton Irwin is one of them.

I wrote this a while back but I wanted to wait til december to post it for christmas reasons. It’s set in my trouble is ‘verse so in context it’s set while Luke is in LA and doesn’t have time for Ashton to visit, so Michael comes over to whine about not being able to visit Calum keep him company. Some platonic festive mashton 🥰

Ashton usually didn’t decorate his apartment for Christmas, but Michael insisted, and now he was standing precariously on a chair trying to hang colorful lights above his balcony door while Michael stood back and supervised. “You know, you could be helping?”

“I untangle enough wires at work, I don’t have to do it here too.”

“This was your idea!”

“And it looks nice and festive, so clearly it was a great idea.”

“You’re a dick.”

Michael went inside and made them hot chocolate, and once the light-hanging drama was over and Ashton was warming his hands on a mug of hot chocolate, he had to admit it wasn’t a bad idea at all. It made the place feel cozy, and the holiday music playlist Michael had put on didn’t hurt.

“I know you’re sick of hearing me talk about wanting to spend Christmas with Calum…” Michael trailed off, watching Ashton over his mug.

“Kenny picked an inconvenient year to spend the holidays with her grandparents,” Ashton said. “But by all means, tell me how much you miss Calum.”

“Shut up, I know it’s not the same.” Ashton laughed. “She said she’s coming up for New Year’s, right?”

“She did. I think she thinks one of us is more likely to give her champagne than her mom.” Ashton gave Michael a pointed look.

“I didn’t promise her anything,” Michael said. Ashton was sure he didn’t, but he probably definitely implied it. “She probably wants to spend time with you.”

“Or with you. Since you two are keeping secrets from me now,” he added jokingly.

“Come on, you know why I couldn’t tell you. Besides, she and Astrid are cute together, she was probably—what?” Michael was staring at Ashton as if he hadn’t just admitted to keeping more than the one secret. Michael’s eyes got wide. “Oh my god, did she not tell you about Astrid? You didn’t hear it from me, I didn’t say anything.”

“My daughter has a girlfriend and she told you before me?” he asked, not upset, just in pure disbelief.

“You can’t tell her I told you,” Michael said quickly. “She’ll disown me.”

“Not if I disown you first.”

“We’re not related.”

“But you are my family, and I will disown you.”

“But I made you hot chocolate?” Michael said, pushing Ashton’s hand holding his mug closer to his face. Ashton rolled his eyes and took a sip. “Don’t overthink it Ash,” he said more softly. “You know how hard it is to tell parents things. For the record, she asked if I would tell you and I told her she should tell you herself. I assumed she did.”

“I’m not, I think it’s sweet that she trusts you so much.”

Michael made a face. “This Christmas music is making you soft.”

“Fine, maybe I’ll disown you after all.”

“Then I’ll have a reason to go crying to Calum.”

“I’ll tell him to disown you too.”

Michael pouted and shook his head. “I’m never making you hot chocolate again.”

The Bassics of Love (we love puns here) is based on this post and much encouragement of a joke about calum giving luke a fish instead, by maya and adri. The tag line is “2 times Calum gave his bandmates a bass + 1 time he gave them a different kind of bass” (credit to @calumsash ). Calum-centric sort of ot4 platonic (but could be more who knows) to quote the document lol Essentially really emotional stuff about gifts as a love language between mashton and malum and calum giving luke a singing fish. I compiled a nice list of Calum’s bass guitars and also the fic has Mali bc i love her. Coming to ao3 near you maybe. one day. visual:

funny that you ask of untitled mashton university au bc I said so bc I borrowed a few ideas from that to write the fic exchange fic for you!! that said the entire basis of even starting a 5sos college au was simply so I could write CompSci TA Jack Barakat. that’s it. that was my sole motivation. however I made Michael an arts major with Jet Black Heart being a major influence on the plot and development of michael through the fic. it has a playlist so there’s a good chance of me finishing it but that might be in a while lol the opening paragraph:
