the masked lapwing is a large bird found in australia, new zealand, and new guinea. they are commonly found by the edges of wetlands and open fields, where they primarily feed on worms. although fairly docile and reclusive through much of the year, they are known for their extreme defensiveness during the breeding season. when fighting or scaring off potential predators, they use the bright yellow spurs on their wings. although they are sometimes referred to as ‘masked plovers’, they aren’t a member of the plover subfamily.

The shiny and the wattled.
Northern lapwings live in much of the Palearctic, residing in fields and mud flats. They are highly migratory, wintering as far south as North Africa and northern India and breeding father north. They mostly eat the stubble of sugar beets, but also eat invertebrates, small fish, and seeds. Chicks especially need to eat invertebrates. These birds are aggressive in defense of their nests, willing to attack harriers and even large livestock that come too close. The northern lapwing is the Republic of Ireland’s national bird. These lapwings are considered Near Threatened due to overuse of agricultural land and draining of wetlands, which threaten breeding habitat.
Masked lapwings live in the northern and eastern parts of Australia, preferring open areas on the edges of wetlands. While not actually plovers, they may also be called spur-winged plovers in reference to the spurs on the carpal joints of their wings. They feed on worms and insects on the ground. These birds have a tendency to nest wherever they feel like it (such as in suburban gardens, or even in parking lots or flat rooftops) and refusing to reconsider, and parent lapwings fiercely defend these nests.
