💙 $an.s isn’t very prone to hiccups - but this doesn’t mean he doesn’t get them. when he gets a case, he gets em *hard* (not painful, just very deep and making his body rock a whole bunch)

💙 eating too much would probably bring them about for him. ‘this thing’s sensitive’, he says, patting his stomach, knowing full well that he’s not going to live by this warning at all

💙 going back to their sound - if i were to write them, i’d probably opt for onomatopoeias such as “*hURk*” or “*HMP’a*” or “*HUC’p* – *huCK-HK*” (excuse the strange writing ^^” i’m still trying to work out that part...)

💙 funnily enough, despite being loud and proud about his figure, he prefers to find a quiet place to go when hiccupping - he usually comes up with some lame excuse when he feels a case ‘brewing’, before taking a shortcut back to his and his brother’s house.

💙 he knows perfectly effective cures (thanks to the ‘genius’ that is his brother and trying to get him to stop before he “scares away a human”) but… you know him. he just sits around and waits them out. ‘too much of a hassle’ he says.

💙 his hiccups are a one-bout-and-done deal - although his cases can last pretty long (he’d recount a time they lasted for over an hour), and the speed of them is unpredictable

💙 every time he hiccups, his stomach jolts, kind of ‘puffing out’ (for lack of a better word) as he has his mittened hand gently massaging it back and forth. again, sensitive tummy, although the sensations of his cases bring about more conflicting, ‘nice’ feelings in his stomach - he’s probably embarrassed about it.

Fics featuring Little Ghost, Pure Vessel, Quirrel, or the Nailmasters are preferable, but I don't mind other characters too - hard not to get attached with the characters in this game, really

Forgiving What is Faultless (by bluebellbygones) - My absolute favorite. I cried. THK recovering with Hornet looking after them, while the both of them are also mourning for Ghost. THK meets PK, or what remains of him, and they get some kind of closure, and did I say I cried?

To know, if nothing else (by Machine_Finch) - PK finding out that THK is not pure before the sealing. The ending has a twist, and the atmosphere is excellent.

On the subject of idols (by Aspidiske) - Lurien, Ogrim. It’s a fancomic, not a fanfic, but such thoughtful look into the nature of the two characters’ loyalty. The author also has a tumblr by the name @/asp1diske-art and they upload their HK comics here. Their HK comics capture the melancholy of the game really well – and punch the readers’ guts really well too.

Hope Floats (by SwoodMaxProductions) - Quirrel & Ghost fluff. Ghost being a floaty and saved Quirrel. Fluffy and made of feels.

Missing Person (by FollowerofMercy) - Quirrel & Ghost. Ghost being a creepy but adorable kid who employs the help of the Mantis Lords to find their friend. Adorable, but mostly hilarious.

Confessions whispered in the dead of night (by ruthlesslistener) - Lurien/PK. Drunk Lurien, protective territorial PK. This makes me soft.

To be another (by snowmints) - The siblings. Quoted from the tags: “Featured: THK learning to enjoy things; also featured: Ghost’s persistently affectionate nature.”

Notches by the Door (by Payasita) - Post-ending, where both Ghost and THK live and they stay at Dirtmouth with Hornet. Grimmchild is there too and becomes the fourth sibling. This fic feels very bittersweet somehow, and there’s an undertone of loneliness (or sadness) even though the story is happy.

“i’d live for you” and that’s hard to do (by YunaTuna) - Quirrel & Ghost, Quirrel & THK. What goes on in Quirrel’s head in the fight with Uumuu and at the Blue Lake, and what happens after. This fic made me scream for various reasons throughout the whole reading. It is a roller coaster of emotion and it hurt and heal me simultaneously.

Talk (by Syntax) - A short, cute oneshot taking place post-game. Ghost asks THK things, including why a certain beetle wouldn’t talk to them anymore. The sibling dynamic is wonderful, excellently shown by my favorite part:

“The larger vessel brought a claw to their cracked mask, massaging the spot above their eyes as if they had come to a painful conclusion. Ghost watched them, enraptured.  So wise, their sibling.  They wondered what the Hollow Knight might say.

White-Saviour, the Hollow Knight said eventually.  They sounded more tired than usual.”

Multi-chaptered:

Mellow in Softness (by UnregisteredCookie) - On-going. PK woke up in the ancient basin, climbed his way up, met and got roasted by Herrah, then met and got affection from Ghost.

A Lost Light (by elil) - Complete. PK got captured by a God Tamer, and the series of (mostly unfortunate) events that took him back to Hallownest. The other fics in the series are also delightful.

Tales from the White Palace (by Sitasita) - On-going. Oneshots from Sitasita’s Will Terribly universe. Excellent writing, wonderful world building and characterization, and saying the stories are entertaining is an understatement.

The light without whom I cannot see (by Eloidyrm) - Complete. PK/White Lady. A fic about their first meeting up till their marriage. Very sweet, and White Lady is a real delight: wise and witty and never passed up the chance to tease PK.

Sins of the Father (by Nike (weirdpianist), Nike was never the nice one (weirdpianist), ReverseInverse) - Complete. Shade Lord Ghost took PK back in time with them, and he gets the chance to be a better father. Featuring baby vessels and Ghost being a child in an eldritch god body.

Changing Perspective (by Brackets_002) - The Pale King got attached to his children and threw the Vessel plan out the window. It’s multi-chaptered and still on-going, but there’s so much fluff in the available chapters and it’s so, so sweet how the babies respond to their parents and vice versa. Also, if you’re not sold yet, I hope Ghost being called “the bean” would do the trick.

Broken Open Revealing Hollowness and Vibrance (by JaxxCapta) - Complete. Hornet taking care of THK after the fight with Radiance while dealing with grief and trying to be everywhere and taking care of two kingdoms at once. I haven’t finished reading this, but the writing is really good and the worldbuilding(?) feels solid, and I hurt for Hornet. Baby girl needs rest, probably for the next ten years.

I am learning again to live with scars (hoping this time you’ll walk it with me) (by resha04 aka me, lol) - Canon-divergence brought about by time travel, where the Pale King stopped the Vessel Project halfway through and raised the vessels as his children. All is relatively well, as well as it can be with the infection spreading, but the formerly Pure Vessel struggled with living as a child - a person - would.

Comparison Of Movie-Watching Experience In Hong Kong & The Chinese Mainland—Fun Or No Fun

The great filmmaker Steven Spielberg said, “Every time I go to a movie, it’s magic, no matter what the movie’s about.” 

It is sad that people do not go to movie theatres anymore. Watching movies from home becomes an easier and a cheaper alternative. With a TV and sound system, you can quickly set up a “home theatre”. Many cinemas in Hong Kong have been shut down though some have been in our city for half a century. Business closure of movie theatres is now a common thing.

As there are fewer and fewer film choices in Hong Kong. I often cross the border to travel to Shenzhen and other Greater Bay Area cities to watch movies. We now have high-speed train which can take us to Shenzhen within 20 minutes, when it used to take one hour. I also find that there are more or more curious youngsters from the Mainland coming to Hong Kong to enjoy our imported foreign motion pictures, especially those produced as an artistic or experimental expression. Such films may not be allowed in the Mainland. Yaumatei  Broadway Cinematheque (百老匯電影中心) is the holy place where they pay their respect.

China now reduces the number of foreign films that can be screened in the country, spurred by the consideration that its local filming industry would be compromised by an open market. Perhaps geopolitics may be another reason for the tighter quota system. In parallel, Hollywood is becoming less focused these days on targeting Chinese audiences. Sino-American co-productions become apparently rare circumstances.

In Hong Kong, young lovers like to go to dinner first and then a movie. They can behave intimately in a dark theatre. You cannot talk during the movie, but there is a lot to be said for body language. This is why our movie audience are mostly young persons. In the Mainland, you can often see families go to the movies. For them, watching movie together is a great opportunity for parents to connect with their children. A weekly family movie in a cozy place away from home is a great way to bring all members together, having fun and lasting memories. People in the Greater Bay Area still keep that old tradition. Such a warm scene reminds me of the loving recollections that I had when I was a kid.

In Hong Kong, concession stands of cinemas sell mainly soft drinks and popcorn. Sometimes, they sell fish balls and siu mai (燒賣). In the Mainland, they sell very special snacks such as braised duck kidney and spicy chicken neck which manifest Chinese food specialties. In Beijing, there is a “hotpot cinema” where one can watch a movie while eating hotpot at the same time. Some cinemas in the Mainland provide foot massage service inside the theatre. Will the audience snuggle down in a comfortable seat and fall asleep? In any event, most cinemas in the Mainland provide massage seats but they are coin-operated. I have not prepared myself for such an exotic participation.

Cinema tickets in Hong Kong are not cheap. They can be about HK$80-120. In the Mainland, after various kinds of promotion discount, they ask for about HK$40-60 per ticket. They often offer “online discount package”, but if your mobile phone cannot download the applicable app, you will not be able to enjoy such substantial reduction of ticket price. 

Land in the Mainland is not as expensive as that of Hong Kong. In the lobby hall of every cinema, they put many gachapon (扭蛋) and game machines. Some look like an amusement arcade. The area is like a “pre-show” before the main performance. The entrance area of a Hong Kong cinema is small. Operators just put up movie posters and a few ticket vending machines. Business is business and cinemas in Hong Kong have to do the bare minimum in order to survive.

Hong Kong is a liberal society and we can enjoy all kinds of films, of course, except those which are highly sensitive in terms of political ideologies. In the Mainland, many kinds of films are prohibited such as those which are superstitious, anti-Chinese, promote bad conduct, encourage crimes, x-rated and immoral contents. Nevertheless, when I watch a movie in Shenzhen, the variety of other kinds of movies still gives me a great pleasure. They include  historical epics (歷史題材片) , fantasy and mythology (奇幻神話片), contemporary comedies, mystery and detective stories, children animated movies and documentaries. Some directors are obviously newbies and their movies are ordinary. I did watch 2 good movies Successor ( 抓娃娃) and Upstream (逆行人生).

Sometimes, disappearing is the way to let new things emerge. Cinemas are disappearing but home movie subscription-based streaming services like Netflix appear. Nowadays, we do not hire a seat, but we procure an internet-connected device to watch a movie. The world must go on…Films, always wear a new dress.

Movie Review | Heroes Shed No Tears (Woo, 1986)

I remember being put off by the sadism of the violence when I last saw this, but having become more attuned to the wavelengths of exploitation cinema, I can appreciate that this is trying to get a jolt of you. John Woo hasn’t fully refined his gunplay at this point, but the sheer number of squibs and ‘splosions almost makes it a moot point. Truth be told, without the strong characters of Woo’s classics, the violence does get numbing at times, but I feel a little bit like I’m complaining that there’s too much food at a buffet. It’s a good problem to have.

Interestingly, the 88 Films release includes a featurette that compares the Hong Kong 1986 release to an earlier South Korean release from 1984 and suggests that the SK version had some Woo-isms that were excised for the more exploitative HK version. I would be interested to see that cut if it ever surfaces in a decent looking version to see if the movie plays better with the more pronounced Heroic Bloodshed elements. The HK version also adds in some racier elements, including a massage scene that I don’t remember seeing when I watched this on YouTube years ago. I’m guessing the person who uploaded the video cut it out. I believe the scene was added without Woo’s involvement, so perhaps the uploader was only respecting the director’s vision.

Anyway, if you’re sufficiently HK-pilled, you’ll find yourself laughing unreasonably hard at the idiotic gambling scene, and the most shocking thing for you will be seeing Lam Ching-Ying without a moustache. And as this is a John Woo movie, the title is obviously a lie.
