How to search for a specific document on the French National Archives website?
I'm going to use this post by @montagnarde1793 as an example because it's very convenient for me: she perfectly noted the archive's class mark and she chose a document that requires going through several files.
Here we have a letter from the Comité de Salut Public by Barère, Prieur de la Côte d'Or and Billaud-Varenne and adressed to Prieur de la Marne. The details are as follows:
Tumblr media
There is a lot of informations. They have to be decoded one by one. For now, only those details are important :
Tumblr media
"AN" means "Archives Nationales". So the virtual reading room of the Archives Nationales is the most suitable website to conduct researches if you live far away from Paris and cannot go directly. This is what their home page is supposed to look like.
Tumblr media
Okay now, remember the following numbers provided by montagnarde1793 right after the "AN" ? "AF II 37" ? This is the archive's class mark, its identity card. Now, we are going to use it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, we see that that we put the right number and it is giving us the following information : the letter comes indeed from an archival fund produced by the Comité de Salut Public, it is stored in Saint-Denis, and it is available to be "Reserved" or "Added to the class marks cart". For now, we ignore those. We only click on the number.
Tumblr media
And here appears a problem: the number exists twice, in two different places. I started by looking at the first fund, but it soon became clear that it didn't contain what I was looking for (here, the AF/II/37 call mark referred to naval affairs, which doesn't correspond to the document published by montagnarde1793), so the right link must be the second one.
Tumblr media
So we click on the second link and we end up on this page.
Tumblr media
We don't care about the general presentation of the fund because we are searching for a specific item so we directly go to dig into the details.
Tumblr media
Okay. We know we have to click on the last link titled "Comité de Salut public. Cartons." because we already know the letter we are looking for is a CSP document and AF/II/37 is obviously somewhere between AF/II/20 and AF/II/42. And now we keep searching for AF/II/37 until we find it.
Tumblr media
Now, remember the informations provided by montagnarde1793 ? The rest of the numbers is finally going to be useful.
Tumblr media
Oh, it's here !
Tumblr media
And finally :
Tumblr media
AHAH, HERE IT IS !
Tumblr media
And you found the document. Good job ! <3

I’m back with a second WIP Wednesday on the trot, with another grown-up Mathilde snippet. Except this time it's from a fic where she goes off to uni and encounters a Bondian scheme by one of her professors bc I grew up the Young Bond novels and I just think they're neat. Will I ever complete it? Probably not but I’m having fun writing it.
‘Spare me the patronising tone, Miss Bond. Turing used his incredible brain to aid the war effort, there are no clean hands.’
‘His work saved millions of lives. The war would’ve dragged on for years longer had he not cracked Enigma.’
Irritation bubbled over in Claiborne’s eyes, ‘It was the Poles who cracked Enigma. You really should’ve paid more attention in my lectures, Bond.’
Mathilde grimly noted the use of the past tense. This must have been what had happened to Nathan Richards. He must have found out about the zero day attack too and Claiborne had him murdered for it. Now it looked like Mathilde would suffer the same fate. ‘Turing did refine the decryption, I’ll admit that. But what about Babbage and his Difference Engine?’
‘What about it?’ She said with equal frustration as she fruitlessly struggled against the restraints pinning her wrists to the chair. ‘He never got a chance to make it.’
‘Imagine that he had. He intended it to be used to calculate the financial assets of the British Empire. Its conquests, its wars, its plunder. At least tell me you know where the word computer comes from?’
If Claiborne was affording her the chance to play the smart Alec she decided she might as well take it, she didn’t want to show how frightened she really was. ‘From Latin, via the French. To determine together through reason.’
‘By jove, she does know something. You see Miss Bond, I reason all this technological advancement, all this progress in the end it has always been used to do what humans have always done. This is power as its most pure. I’m just staking my claim.’
‘That’s it? The miracle of technology and it all comes down to making algorithms to decide who to kill and how to do it most efficiently? And make yourself a little more rich in the process? You’re a monster, sir.’
If Claiborne was wounded by her words he didn’t show it save for the brusqueness with which he spoke his next utterance. ‘I do believe this tutorial is at an end, Miss Bond. I truly am sorry it has to end this way, you really were a very promising student.’
It's doubly fun to write a villain 😁 I'm imagining Claiborne as Samuel West because he did such a marvellous job as Sir Hugo Drax in the radio play of Moonraker and he is delightfully devilish as Peter Judd in the Slow Horses tv series.

D&AD- Digital storyboard
Following the handmade storyboard, I made this digital one in order to get an idea of how we want to film the advert/ explanation of our idea for Penguin. It shows roughly how to introduce all the different formats and elements of our idea, as a draft to show in the tutorial. The VoiceOver is very rough and we may need to more description/explaining. This is using a combination of Mathilde’s imagery and some I made on my own.

5 DIY to recycle corks in its decor
Sunday, it is time to tidy up your apartment and you are faced with a bed of empty bottles and corks assorted. And if instead of throwing them away you recycle them to make something stylish? Here are 5 nice DIY ideas to adopt urgently for a unique and personalized decor!
Original coasters in corks
Let's stay in the winemaking theme with a beautiful set of 100% homemade coasters. For that nothing more simple: corks at the same height, some glue points and voila!
For more creativity, choose an elongated cutout to attach to a round cardboard surface. A creation without making a head that will delight as much your desires to display your finest collection glasses, as your friends, surprised by so much originality.
Cork corks transformed into articulated figurines
Tumblr media
This afternoon, you welcome your little niece and you have absolutely no activity to offer him. Do not panic! With small accessories or small pieces of wire, shape arms and legs to your characters, before painting them in the colors of your choice. And now, room for imagination! It's still more original than Bratz no?
Personalized letters for deco lovers
While the trend is for the compulsive purchase of luminous letters at HEMA, today we offer you an original tutorial to make mini sculptures in the shape of letters to slide everywhere in your home.
As for the coaster, cut out the shape of the chosen letter in cardboard before sticking plugs. Do not hesitate to collect from your entourage, the surprise will be even greater when discovering your new decor so rustic. An idea to adopt for a wedding too; your guests will be amazed by your artistic talents!
A self-made, easy to make and customize
Tumblr media
Pellets have become essential in almost every room of a house: photos, good ideas, or notes of everyday life. Because it costs quickly on specialized sites, it can be interesting to create your own jumble and customize it to perfection. If you like to hunt, go hunting an old mirror depoque and use it to make a table retro style and offbeat. It can also be the perfect gift for your best friend in the air!
Mini flower pots magnet for city dwellers in need of greenery
Want to bring some greenery to your kitchen without it taking too much space? Group together the corks that hang in your kitchen, dig a hole in each cork before you slide some succulents. Final step: stick a magnet on one side of the plug! And here is the work!
Mathilde (The Athan Zafirov Wine Blog)
Passionate about pretty words and colorful tights, Mathilde takes life to the fullest and appreciates the simple pleasures: a good bottle, a group of friends and a few rays of sun form the winning trio of her ideal evening!

How to request a document reproduction on the French National Archives website (without paying anything)?
Setting the scene: I'd like to obtain a digital version of this file, because online, only a brief unhelpful description is shown and the visual is not available.
If you don't know how to navigate through the website to get to the archive you want, I've explained in this post how to search for a specific item in the French National Archives' virtual reading room. You really should read it before this post, because there are many details I won't go into again.
You're ready? Okay, let's get into it.
Once again, you don't go to the official website, but to the virtual reading room. This is systematically the place to go to search for documents and leaf through inventories. You can access it here.
Tumblr media
In real life, if you go to the Paris or Saint-Denis sites and ask to consult the archives, you'll be required to register by filling in a form with your information (not much personal details, they often just want to know if you're here for personal stuff like genealogy, or if you're studying documents for university-related works), and you'll be given a card.
Here, online, it's basically the same thing. You'll need to create an account. Don't worry, it's completely free. Be careful to go to the Espace personnel" (personal account) and not the "Accès sécurisé" (secured access).
Tumblr media
Once you have clicked, the website will inform you that creating an account will give you access to the following options:
Order or reserve a document
Request document reproductions
Request search assistance
Save your search results
So really, I insist, this is a step you shouldn't neglect. And of course, this also works if you live in a different country!
Tumblr media
Okay now, let's get back to our document.
I'm not going to explain a second time what a class mark is and how to find it, once again I refer you to my other post which explains everything in detail. Just know that the item that interests me has F/7/6712 as its class mark.
There's a lot of information. Just know that the first thing to do is to set aside your document in what we call the “panier” (the cart). Yep, the shopping cart, just as if you were buying clothes on a website. There is also an option to “reserve” the document, but this implies that the archivists will put aside the physical version of the document and wait for you to come and consult it directly in Paris or Saint-Denis. Yeah, no. Let's save ourselves a shit ton of money, all of us are way too poor for this.
Tumblr media
This is what the cart looks like (image below ↓). This is where you will store all the class marks that interest you, but which you can't or don't want to have reproduced immediately, so you can easily find them later. As you can see, I've already put aside a few. You need to look at the access conditions right away to check whether you can make your request or not. If you look carefully, you'll see that some of the Carnot family archives I wanted to obtain are blocked because they're in such poor condition that the archivists don't want to risk damaging them further by scanning or even opening them.
However, for the document I want to get today (the last one on the list), there's nothing written in this section, which means that everything is fine and I can proceed.
So we click on "Demander une reproduction" (ask for a reproduction) :
Tumblr media
In this space, you need to be as specific as possible about what you want. For example, if the class mark is linked to a file with... let's say 600 items (and this often happens), you specify that you only need the documents associated with the numbers 4, 96 and 546, so that the archivist doesn't have to scan 600 documents one by one for nothing and cry all day.
Tumblr media
Then here, you specify why you want this document and what you're going to use it for (for me, this will be personal and private use because this specific research of mine isn't related to work or university, but you can see the “professional use” option also exists).
Tumblr media
And this is where you need to listen to me very carefully, because in the price list for document reproductions, there's only one free option, and that's the jpeg or pdf scan. Trust me, I systematically ask for this option, and the scans are always of excellent quality. Currently I got +1000 Fouché-related documents without paying anything and without needing to move from my couch.
Of course, the prices aren't exponential, in fact they're quite reasonable (for example, if you want a paper photocopy sent by regular mail, it'll cost you between 15 and 30 eurocents. That's fine for a single sheet, but if, like me, you need files with more than 300 pages, it quickly becomes a problem).
Tumblr media
And finally, you submit your request and you wait for 3 to 6 months.
They will most likely send you an email with a password-protected link they'll give you, to a site where you can send very large files (they often use WeTransfer), and you'll have a limited time to open it so be careful to use an email adress you check regularly when you create your account.
And you have your document. Good job <3

D&AD- Visuals that Mathilde created
When we met after I created the idea pages and storyboard Mathilde showed us her overview pages (her blog will show better versions) which I will use to create a digital storyboard and we will show in the next tutorial. These are really good examples of our idea and how it works.

Passenger - presentation
This was the final presentation that we showed to the people from Passenger and the tutor from interior architecture. Since the tutorial the presentation was my only job as Mathilde’s panel designs were chosen, Asia focused on sticking the designs to the cardboard model, Maria focused on digital designs and scaling, Hannah and Izzy contributed elsewhere too.
The presentation went well and was received positively, with feedback suggesting that it would look nicer if the panels gradually grew in size round the shape; i.e. the first panel was knee height, then 2nd was a few inches taller etc. We could all see how this would look good and hope that we could develop something like that if they did want to do anything with our designs.

Passenger tutorial
26.02.20
- Good idea, but needs to be more translatable to smaller spaces; like keep the shape of the logo when only in a 2m space.  - Include more panels with windows in or transparency to allow more light and make the smaller space feel slightly bigger  - Make the frames more flexible so they can be curved for a smaller space or easier to transport - they want more digital panels rather than printed as if they make changes, it won't be costly to replace or alter the design  - More interactivity to draw people in- maybe interactive website or menu instead of icons and explanations of each. package  - Mathilde’s design is preferred (minimal, gradient, pattern in the background)

Passenger - The presentation for the tutorial
From deciding that each of us come up with our own design of panels, we opened a google slides presentation that we could all add to and edit. Here I wrote about what our idea is, put in my illustrations to help visualise it and wrote a little about the content. Image 3 is the design by Izzy, image 4 are my designs, image 5 are Mathilde's and the last is Hannah D’s.
You can see clear similarities between all of our designs, but it will be down to the people from Passenger to say which ones they prefer.
