 마츠카와에게 회사 일이 끝나고 동네 놀이터에 나와 앉아서 맥주 한 캔을 마시는 게 어느덧 일과가 되었다. 놀이터 바로 앞에 편의점이 있어서 자주 가는 이유도 있었지만 놀이터를 선호하는 것에는 또 다른 이유가 있었다. 이 놀이터에는 아이들이 없었기 때문이었다. 최근 흉흉한 소문 하나가 동네를 휩쓸었고, 아이들이 있는 부모들은 해가 떨어지기도 전에 아이들을 집으로 들이는 게 일상다반사였다. 그래서 느지막이 놀이터에 가면 담배를 피는 몇몇 고등학생들뿐이었고 거의 대부분은 마츠카와 혼자였다.

 끼익끼익 거리면서 혼자 움직이는 그네는 마츠카가와가 보기에 자신과 흡사해 보였다. 최근 마츠카와는 고독을 느끼고 있었다. 가족들과 친구들 모두 미야기 현에 있었고 마츠카와는 얼떨결에 오사카 지사로 발령 나는 바람에 혼자 살게 되었다. 아는 사람이라고는 회사사람들 밖에 없어서 퇴근하고 회식이 없는 이상 집에 혼자 있기 일쑤였다. 고독과 적적함. 이전까지만 해도 자신과는 전혀 접점이 없을 꺼라 여겨왔던 감정들이 이제 끊임없이 마츠카와를 삼키려 호시탐탐 기회를 엿보았다.

 오늘도 평소대로 편의점에서 맥주를 사서 공원 쪽으로 걸어갔다. 조용한 거리에 마츠카와의 구두굽 소리만 울려퍼지는 것이 꽤나 듣기 좋았다. 오랜만에 콧노래까지 흥얼거리면서 걸어가는 마츠카와는 뜻밖의 사람이 공원에 있는 것을 보고 놀랐다. 처음 보는 남학생이었다. 머리가 꽤 가지런한 모양새의 남자아이는 구식 교복 그러니깐 가쿠란을 입고 있었다. 벤치에 앉아서 고개를 숙여 스마트폰을 바라보고 있었는데 앞머리가 길게 내려와 얼굴이 자세히 보이지 않았다. 내가 신경 쓸건 아니지. 마츠카와는 어깨를 으쓱 하고는 건너편의 벤치에 앉아서 맥주 캔을 땄다.

 입 안으로 들어오는 맥주는 하루의 피로를 씻어주기에 충분했다. 담배를 한 개비 꺼내서 불을 붙이니 오늘 괜히 자신을 욕했던 상사가 생각나 입안이 씁쓸해졌다. 업무가 힘든 것은 아니었으나 요즘은 몸에 힘이 들어가지 않았고 의욕도 전혀 없었다. 마츠카와는 꽤나 지쳐있었다.

 “아저씨”

 희뿌연 담배 연기를 가르고 누군가의 말소리가 들렸다. 마츠카와는 어리둥절한 표정을 짓고 고개를 돌려 자신에게 말을 건 상대를 찾았다. 어디지. 아무리 찾아도 사람이 보이지 않아 잘못 들었겠지 생각한 마츠카와는 시선을 거두고 담배를 다시 크게 마셨다.

 “아저씨, 왜 내 말 무시해요.”

 “컥”

 이번엔 더 또렷이 옆에서 들리는 음성과 자신의 허벅지에 올려진 손 때문에 당황한 나머지 담배를 잘못 마셔 사래에 들리고 말았다. 코끝을 찡하게 만든 매운 담배 연기에 한참 켁켁거리면서 얼굴이 벌게지도록 호흡을 고르기 위해 노력했다. 준비해온 종이컵에 미처 다 태우지 못한 담배를 비벼 끄고 자신을 당황시킨 당사자를 바라봤다. 마츠카와를 당황시킨 인물은 아까 공원에 있던 검정 교복의 남학생이었다. 의외의 인물에 마츠카와는 반쯤 감겨있던 눈이 동그랗게 떠졌다.

 “어?”

 ��빵하게 대답한 것 같기도 했다. 남자아이는 약간 째진 눈을 가지고 있었고 가르마가 반듯하니 나눠있는 모양새가 꽤나 단정해보였다. 교복도 주름이나 구김이 별로 없었으며 책가방은 맨 것이 불량 학생은 아닌 것 같았다. 그렇다면 대체 왜 이 시간에 음침한 공원에 있느냐가 마츠카와가 가지는 의문이었다.

 “왜 무시하냐구요.”

 “미안, 못 들었어.”

 “담배 펴 봐도 돼요?”

 처음에 마츠카와는 자신이 잘못들은 줄 알았다. 그러나 아직 연기가 폴폴 나고 있는 종이컵 안의 담배를 바라보는 남자아이의 시선 때문에 잘못 들은 게 아니라는 것을 깨달았다. 나 참, 요새 애들이란.

 “안 돼. 미성년자 딱지나 떼고 와.”

 꽤나 단호하게 말한 것이 마츠카와는 놀라웠다. 요새 애들 많이 무섭던데. 전에 통화할 때 편의점에서 술을 사다달라고 졸라댔던 남학생들이 있었다며 우는 소리를 하던 하나마키에게 들은 말이 갑자기 생각났다. 그때는 하나마키의 말을 가볍게 코웃음 치고 넘어갔지만 직접 맞닥뜨리고 나니 요새 애들은 그렇게 가벼이 여길만한 게 아니었다. 그런 것 치고 방금은 엄하게 말한 편이었다. 아무래도 앞에 있는 남자아이가 불량배는 아닐 거라는 짐작 때문에 마츠카와는 생각보다 어른같이 남자아이를 대했다.

 “다른 거랑은 냄새가 달라서 한번 펴보고 싶었는데...”

 “아아, 멘솔.”

 “멘솔이요?”

 “박하나 민트향이 첨가된 담배.”

 교복 입은 남학생과 담배에 대한 이야기를 하고 있다는 것이 마츠카와에게는 생경한 일이었다. 어느새 자신이 앉아있는 벤치로 와서 한 뼘 정도의 거리를 유지한 채 남자아이는 무표정한 얼굴로 이야기하더니 돌연 입을 꾹 다물었다. 마츠카와는 갑자기 찾아온 정적 때문에 담배가 당겼지만 옆에 앉은 남자아이 때문에 피울 수가 없었고, 조금 남은 맥주를 한입에 털어버리고는 슬쩍 남자아이에게 말을 붙여봤다.

 “이 시간까지 집에 안 들어가고 뭐해.”

 아까까지만 해도 자기 할 말을 늘어놓더니 역으로 질문을 하자 앞만 바라보고는 남자아이는 아무 말도 하지 않았다. 무시하나 싶은 생각에 발끈하는 마음이 들어 마츠카와는 빈정거리면서 다시 말을 했다.

 “가출?”

 “아닌데요. 집 열쇠 놓고 왔는데요.”

 무표정한 얼굴이 갑자기 마츠카와를 팩 하고 째려보더니 아니라는 듯이 쏘아붙였다. 마츠카와는 발근하는 남자아이를 보고는 어깨를 으쓱하고는 자리를 털고 일어났다. 이제 슬슬 몸이 추워지는 게 감기라도 올 것 같은 느낌이었다.

 “어서 집에 들어가라.”

 “못 들어간다니깐요.”

 그래그래. 마츠카와는 손을 흔들고 집 쪽으로 걸어갔다.

      그 뒤에도 일주일에 네다섯 번은 공원에서 남자아이와 마주쳤다. 마츠카와는 남자아이가 고등학교 2학년이라는 것과 쿠니미 아키라라는 이름을 가지고 있는 거라는 사실을 알아냈다. 남자아이는 그러니깐 쿠니미는 꽤나 열쇠를 자주 놓고 와서 밖에서 기다리는 날이 많았다. 처음에는 집에 들어가기 싫거나 친구들에게 따돌림을 당하나 싶었지만, 쿠니미는 정말로 열쇠를 깜빡하고 안 가져오는 것이 일상이었다. 마츠카와는 쿠니미에게 우스갯소리로 열쇠를 목에 걸고 다니면 어떠냐고 물었더니 그렇게 하면 도둑들한테 표적되기 십상이라고 핀잔 들었다.

 마츠카와는 쿠니미와 이야기하면서 상당한 공통점이 있음을 발견했다. 쿠니미도 마츠카와처럼 미야기 현 출신이었고 키타가와 제1중학교를 다녔다. 아오바죠사이 고등학교를 1학년 중반까지 다니다가 현재 부모님의 직장 변동에 따라 오사카로 전학 온 것이었다. 그리고 가장 의외였던 공통점은 배구였다. 마츠카와는 대학에 진학하기 전까지 계속 배구부를 했다. 쿠니미 역시 중학교 때는 물론이고 전학온 지금 학교에서도 배구부를 하고 있다고 했다.

 “윙스파이커?”

 “...네”

 의외의 포지션에 놀라는 표정을 지었더니 자신도 딱히 하고 싶어서 하는 것은 아니라고 쿠니미는 말했다.

 “그렇다면 왜 하는 건데?”

 “키 때문인 것 같아요.”

 “아아. 제법 크지. 쿠니미는”

 마츠카와가 옆에 앉은 쿠니미를 한번 훑어보고는 고개를 끄덕였다. 쿠니미의 얼굴은 앳되게 생겼으나 키는 또래에 비해 제법 큰 편이어서 남들보다 꽤나 크다는 소리를 듣는 마츠카와와 얼마 차이가 나지 않았다. 키 때문인 것 같다고 말은 했지만 성실하게 배구부를 하는 모양인지 처음 만날 때 봤던 구식교복은 자주 보이지 않았고 운동복 입은 모습을 더 많이 봤다. 연한 노란색 체육복도 잘 어울렸지만 마츠카와가 생각하기에는 구식교복이 더 잘 어울린다고 생각했다.

 “이번에 저희 학교 인터하이 예선전에 올라갔는데 보러오실래요?”

 “응?”

��“예선전이요.”

 “관계자가 아니더라도 갈 수 있나?”

 “상관없어요.”

 “회사 가야하는데”

 “주말이에요.”

 “약속이 있을 수도...”

 마츠카와의 계속되는 거절에 쿠니미의 표정이 점점 더 뚱해졌다. 관계자가 아니더라도 갈 수 있는 것은 이미 알고 있었고 오사카에서 누군가와 주말 약속이 있는 것은 마츠카와에게는 절대 없을 일이었다. 그저 마츠카와는 배구를 보러가고 싶은 마음이 없었다. 쿠니미가 먼저 무엇인가를 권하는 것은 처음이었으나 아닌 것은 아니었다. 마츠카와가 쿠니미의 눈치를 살피고 있었을 때, 갑자기 쿠니미가 일어나 공원 바깥 방향으로 몇 걸음 걸어가더니 마츠카와를 돌아보고는 소리쳤다.

 “6월 21일! 꼭 와!!!!! 바보 맛층!!!!”

 그렇게 말하고는 마츠카와가 뭐라 말할 새도 없이 사라졌다. 바보라니. 쪼끄만 게 두어 달 놀아줬더니 머리끝까지 올라오려고 했다. 쿠니미의 제안에 뒤죽박죽된 머리를 정리하려고 마츠카와는 아무도 없는 공원을 홀로 몇 분정도 거닐다가 집으로 들어갔다.

      그때부터 쿠니미는 보이지 않았다. 처음 하루 이틀정도는 자신이 너무 강력하게 권유를 거절해서 토라진 걸까 하는 생각이 있었지만, 며칠이 더 흐르고 나서는 곧 예선전 날짜라 ���구부에서 합숙을 하거나 늦게까지 연습을 하겠거니 생각하며 자신을 위로했다. 그래도 늘 어울려주던 누군가가 없으니 마츠카와는 다시 처음과 같이 쓸쓸함을 느꼈다. 애초부터 누군가와 함께하지 않았다면 고독의 정도가 5라고 쳤을 때, 누군가와 함께 있다가 빈자리가 생겼을 경우의 고독은 10에 가까웠다. 마츠카와는 점점 더워지는 날씨에 옷차림이 가벼워졌지만 반대로 마음은 초겨울처럼 버석버석 메마르고 차가웠다.

 사실 마츠카와는 배구에 대한 거부감이 있었다. 초등학교 때부터 배구를 하면서 그만큼 배구에 대한 열정과 집착이 차츰차츰 쌓여갔다. 고등학교에 진학해서 배구부에 들었을 때는 인터하이를 바라볼 정도의 실력을 갖추기도 했었다. 그러나 마츠카와의 아오바죠사이 고등학교가 있는 미야기 현에는 인터하이로 가는 가장 큰 걸림돌이자 태산이 있었다. 시라토리자와. 우시지마 와카토시. 이 두 단어면 누구나 고개를 끄덕일 정도로 설명조차 필요가 없었다. 전국에서 세 손가락 안에 꼽히는 에이스. 늘 마츠카와는 인터하이 문턱에서 좌절했다.

 그런 마츠카와에게 배구가 좋은 기억으로 남을 리 없다. 무엇인가에 시간과 열정을 투자했으면 그만큼 보답받기를 바라는 것이 사람인데 배구는 마츠카와에게 그 어떠한 보답도 해주지 못했다. 고등학교를 졸업하고 정신없이 대학을 다니다가 취직을 하고 사회의 여러 풍파를 맞아가면서 그 감정들의 모난 곳이 둥그스름해졌지만 그렇다고 해서 사라진 것은 아니었다. 직장 내에서 배구부를 하는 게 어떻겠냐고 동료들의 권유가 있었지만 마츠카와는 거절했다. 그에게 배구는 더 이상 의미가 없었고 주홍글씨 같은 터부였다.

 오랜만에 토요일에 오프를 받은 터라 아파트 베란다에서 담배를 하나 꺼내서 물었다. 답답한 마음에 뭐라도 해야 생각의 실타래가 정리될 기분이어서 애꿎은 담배를 뻑뻑 빨았다. 알싸한 멘솔향이 입안을 뭉갰다. 멘솔이요? 어디선가  목소리가 들린 것 같기도 했다. 정오가 조금 지났을 때, 학교를 마친 것인지 교복을 입은 학생들이 무리를 지으며 아파트 단지 내로 들어갔다. 쿠니미. 또다시 그 이름이 생각났다. 마츠카와는 다시 복잡해진 생각에 담배를 벽에 비벼 껐다.

      “한 장이면 되는 건가요?”

 “네.”

 “여기 있습니다. 즐거운 관람되세요!”

 매표소에서 표를 받고 가는 내내 마츠카와는 복잡한 심경을 담은 표정을 풀지 못했다. 자신도 이해가 되지 않았다. 어째서 여기까지 발걸음을 한 것이. ‘전국 배구대회 오사카 부 예선전’ 다시는 보지 않을 거라 생각한 현수막이 마츠카와 눈앞에서 너울댔다. 생각하기도 싫은 장면이 떠오르는 느낌에 마츠카와는 서둘러 대회장 안으로 들어갔다.

 대회장 안으로 들어가니 코트를 4등분 하여 총 8팀이 예선전을 치루고 있었다. 이미 점수 차가 많이 벌어진 학교도 있었으며 듀스에서 엎치락뒤치락 하는 학교도 있었다. 마츠카와는 감회가 새로웠다. 십여 년 만에 보는 배구는 속을 뒤집는 한편 이상하게 가슴 한 쪽을 두근거리게 만들었다. 잘 보이지는 않지만 그렇다고 잘 안보이지도 않는 애매한 자리에 앉아서 마츠카와는 쿠니미 학교가 나오길 기다렸다. 입이 심심했다. 맥주라도 가져올걸. 마츠카와는 생각했다.

 그때 한쪽에서 응원소리가 들리더니 곧이어 노란색 유니폼을 입은 남자아이들이 몸을 풀면서 코트내로 들어왔다. 마츠카와는 무의식적으로 쿠니미를 찾았다. 얘도 아니고 쟤도 아니고. 북적거리는 남자아이들은 많았지만 쿠니미는 도통 보이지가 않았다. 설마. 마츠카와는 갑자기 든 이상한 생각에 머리를 내저었다. 레귤러가 아니었나. 그러나 불쑥 나타난 가지런한 정수리에 마츠카와는 피식 웃음을 흘릴 수밖에 없었다.

 쿠니미는 집업 점퍼를 벗더니 스트레칭을 하기 시작했다. 설렁설렁하는 감이 있어도 자세히 들여다보면 순서에 따라 제대로 몸을 풀고 있었다. 오랜만에 보는 뒤통수가 반가워서 저도 모르게 마츠카와는 말을 걸 뻔한 자신이 스스로 웃겨서 혼자 큭큭거렸다. 곧이어 쿠니미의 학교와 상대편 학교가 호명되고 네트 사이에서 서로 인사했다. 쿠니미는 벤치에 앉아있었다.

 1세트는 상당히 접전이었다. 쿠니미의 학교도 베스트8 안에 드는 학교였지만 상대편은 베스트4 안에 드는 강호였다. 비슷비슷한 실력인 것 같으면서도 약간 상대편 학교가 리드하는 형태였지만 쿠니미의 학교도 빈틈을 잘 노리고 점수를 획득했다. 그러나 1세트는 에이스 대결에서 상대편의 학교가 쿠니미의 학교를 힘으로 찍어 눌렀다. 대회장이 떠날 것 같은 함성과 함께 응원가가 울려 퍼졌다. 쿠니미는 괜찮나. 마츠카와는 벤치에 앉아있는 쿠니미를 바라봤지만 쿠니미의 표정은 이전과 다를 게 전혀 없었다.

 2세트는 새로 투입된 세터와 함께 여러 학생들이 활약하면서 손쉽게 쿠니미의 학교가 포인트를 따내 승부는 원점으로 돌아왔다. 마지막 3세트에서 다음 예선전을 치를지 아니면 마지막 여름이 될지가 판가름 난다. 양측 학교의 응원열기가 배구시합보다 더 달아오를 무렵 심판의 휘슬소리가 들리면서 마지막 세트가 시작되었다.

 무슨 운동 종목이던 흐름이 가장 중요하다고 마츠카와는 생각했다. 약한 학교랄 지라도 상승의 기류를 잘 타기만하면 상위권 성적을 내는 것은 무리가 아니었고, 아무리 강한 학교라 할지라도 흐름을 타지 못하면 여름의 문턱에서 소리 소문 없이 사라질 수 있었다. 그것에 비추어보자면 쿠니미의 학교는 지금 2세트의 흐름을 그대로 끌어오지 못 했다. 벌써 5점 차이가 나고 있었고 팀원들의 사기는 그 누가 봐도 바닥을 치고 있음이 뻔히 보였다. 쿠니미의 이번 마지막 여름인가. 마츠카와는 옛날의 자신이 생각나면서 씁쓸한 마음에 자리에서 일어나 담배를 피러 밖으로 나갔다.

 이때쯤이면 끝났겠지. 마츠카와는 간이 재떨이에 담배를 비벼 끄고 이제는 무거워진 발걸음을 애써 의식하지 않으며 대회장 안으로 들어갔다. 그리고 예상치 못한 장면에 입이 떡 벌어졌다.

 나가기 전과는 전혀 딴판인 상황. 20:23. 어느새 쿠니미의 학교는 점수를 리드하고 있었다. 마츠카와는 자신의 눈이 믿겨지지 않았다. 쿠니미의 학교는 그 흐름에 다시 몸을 맡기고 시합에 임하고 있었다. 그건 쿠니미도 마찬가지였다. 처음 보는 의욕적인 모습. 남들처럼 기합소리를 내고 목청껏 소리 지르는 건 아니었지만 군더더기 없는 플레이와 상황에 필요한 판단 그리고 공을 쫓는 눈까지 쿠니미는 지금 배구에 온전히 빠져있는 모습이었다. 두근두근. 마츠카와의 심장이 다시 뛰었다. 스파이크를 치는 쿠니미의 모습에서 어렸을 적 코트에서 뛰던 자신의 모습이 겹쳐보였다. 배구. 배구. 마츠카와는 끝까지 쿠니미의 경기를 지켜봤다.

      오랜만에 공원 벤치가 두 주인을 한 품에 안고 있었다. 노란색 운동복을 입은 쿠니미는 아무말도 하지 않고 밑에만 바라보고 있었고 마츠카와 역시 담뱃갑을 이리저리 만지다가 어렵사리 입을 뗐다.

 “오늘 경기 잘 봤어...”

 갑자기 꺼낸 마츠카와의 말에 쿠니미는 놀란 눈으로 마츠카와를 바라봤다. 그런 쿠니미의 눈이 생소하기도 하고 부끄럽기도 해서 마츠카와는 뒷목을 손으로 쓸었다. 침이 넘어가는 소리마저 크게 들리는 느낌이었다.

 “왔었어요?”

 “응.”

 “...언제부터?”

 “처음부터 끝까지. 아 중간에 잠깐 나갔다왔지만...”

 역전하는 걸 못 봤어. 그 말은 목구멍으로 삼켰다. 그리고 찾아온 침묵 때문에 마츠카와는 담배피고 싶은 생각이 간절했다. 침묵을 견디지 못 하겠다 생각이 든 것은 이번이 처음이었다.

 “저...아저씨”

 “응?”

 “저 배구 좋아해요.”

 뜬금없는 쿠니미의 말에 마츠카와는 잠시 사고가 정지되었다. 그러나 쿠니미의 모습을 한번 바라보고는 고개를 끄덕였다. 성격 탓에 오해도 많이 받았고 감정전달이 서툴러서 다른 이들은 알아주지 않았을 것이다. 마츠카와는 여태까지 계속하고 싶었던 것을 해보기로 했다. 손을 들어 쿠니미의 정갈한 정수리를 손으로 쓰다듬어 주었다.

 “알고 있어. 나도 배구 좋아해.”

 “...진짜요? 저 진짜 배구 좋아해요.”

 “응. 알아.”

 네 덕분에 나도 알게 되었어. 그렇게 배구에 대해 배신감이 컸던 건 그만큼 좋아했기 때문이었다고. 나도 아직 배구를 좋아한다고. 저 어린 꼬마가 자신에게 큰 가르침을 주었다. 열심히 스파이크를 휘둘렀던 쿠니미의 모습 그리고 어린 날 모든 스파이크를 막겠다며 누구보다 높이 뛰어오르려 했던 자신의 모습. 마츠카와는 웃음이 나왔다.

 “그리고..,있잖아요. 아저씨...”

 “응?”

 무언가를 말하려는 듯 쿠니미가 우물쭈물 말끝을 늘였다. 뭐지. 마츠카와는 쿠니미가 말할 때까지 참을성있게 기다려줬다.

 “다음번에도 보러 와줬으면 좋겠어요. 시합.”

 귀 끝까지 빨개져서 이야기하는 쿠니미 덕에 마츠카와도 덩달아 간질거리는 마음에 얼굴이 빨개졌다. 큼. 마츠카와는 헛기침을 한번 크게 하고 대답했다.

 “그래. 갈게.”

 “...네?”

 “시합 보러 간다고.”

 고개를 끄덕이면서 대답했다. 뭐 어렵겠나. 마츠카와 역시 배구가 좋아졌고 쿠니미의 시합을 보는 것도 나쁘지 않았다. 무엇보다도 이 꼬마가 코트 위에서 뛰는 것은 지금까지 느껴왔던 느낌과 영 딴판이라 보는 재미도 쏠쏠했다. 그렇지만 마츠카와는 더는 어떠한 생각도 할 수 없었다. 믿기지 않는 광경이 자신의 앞에 펼쳐졌기 때문이었다.

 “네. 고마워요. 아저씨.”

 쿠니미가 웃었다. 정말 활짝 믿을 수 없을 정도로 밝게 웃었다. 마츠카와는 그런 쿠니미의 환한 웃음을 보고 함께 마주 웃어주었다. 제법 좋은 날이었다.
