“Matthew, wait,” Jack says, furrowing his brow.

“Hm? What’s wrong?” Matthew asks, stopping.

“Turn around.”

“What? Do I have something on me?” Matthew turns, facing his back towards Jack.

Jack picks a little fuzzball off of Matthew’s jacket. “There,” he says, and then spots more. “Wait- hold on. There’s more.”

“More what?”

“Like- little fuzzies. On your jacket. You gotta look presentable, you know.”

“Oh. Thank you!”

Jack picks at them, running his hand over Matthew’s back just to find the ones blending in.

Nicholas and Okada start giggling, talking to each other quietly.

“What’s so funny?” Matthew asks. “He’s helping me.”

“It’s not you,” Nicholas says. “It’s Jack.”

“Huh?” Jack looks up for a moment. “What’s funny about what I’m doing?”

“You’re like a monkey picking bugs out of another monkey’s fur. It just looks funny.”

Jack stops altogether. He slowly pulls his hands away and shoves them in his pockets. “You look fine. Let’s go.” He keeps his head low to hide his pink face, walking past the three.

Matthew frowns at Nicholas and Okada. “Not funny, you guys. That was mean.”

“We didn’t mean any harm!” Nicholas protests. “Jeez, we didn’t think it’d hurt his feelings.”

Matthew rolls his eyes and jogs up to meet Jack. “Jack! Wait for me!”

Jack slows, but doesn’t stop.

“You can ignore them,” Matthew says when he catches up, linking his arm in Jack’s. “I thought it was very sweet of you. Thank you.”

Jack sighs. “I can’t help it. Some things just…have never went away, I guess. No matter how hard I try to ignore it. I didn’t even realize that’s what I was doing until he said it.”

Matthew pats his arm sympathetically. “It’s okay. I don’t think it was a bad thing. It’s kinda cute, actually.”

“Thanks, I guess,” Jack mumbles, scratching the back of his neck and looking away from Matthew.

Rewatching an old BTE from when the Elite divorced last time and Matt goes 'maybe we need to worry about ourselves', he says to Nick, while clearly worrying about Hanger (because they kicked him out) and Kenny (because he left without them).

Now Matthew is worried about Hanger (because of what Swerve did) and Kenny (because he ditched them) again. So what is he doing? Trying to only worry about themselves.

And Matthew probably would've been able to keep doing that for a while, except he couldn't keep up the facade when Darby threatened to burn Jack.

In conclusion, Matthew I am going to shove you in a locker!!! Ugh, he loves them all so much that he can't ever actually communicate it.

a christmas drabble before i pass out. merry christmas, happy holidays!

matt gets stuck underneath the mistletoe.

[mini drabble]

Matt just so happens to look up. “Uh oh.”

Darby pauses his conversation to also look up. “Aw, man, is that mistletoe?” He looks back down at Matt. “Whose idea was it to put that stuff up?”

“Honestly, I don’t remember,” Matt says with a shrug. “I totally forgot we were putting it up.”

“This means I gotta kiss you now though, right?”

Matt raises an eyebrow. “You serious? You’d kiss me?”

Darby shrugs back. “Yeah, sure, why not. Not like anybody’s gonna stop us-“

Out of nowhere, Jack comes practically sprinting through, shoulder-checking Darby out of the way and stopping in front of Matt.

Matt startles, staring wide-eyed at Jack, not sure what the heck had just happened nor why.

“Dude,” Darby says loudly, annoyed. “You could’ve just asked. Fuck, man, that hurt.”

Jack doesn’t look at Darby, instead making a shooing motion as he looks at Matt. “Mistletoe?”

Matt looks up at it again, then back down at Jack, mouth dropping open in shock. He blushes. “Uh, y-yeah, it’s mistletoe-“

Jack pulls Matt in by the front of his Christmas sweater and kisses him.

Matt makes a little surprised noise. His eyes flutter shut anyways, his hands wrapping around Jack to hold himself up as he kisses back.

Jack pulls away, letting go and clearing his throat. “Just tradition. You know how it is.”

Matt touches his bottom lip. He’s buzzing all over the place. “Yeah,” he says softly. “Um- if you, wanna, I don’t know, continue that tradition elsewhere…”

Jack doesn’t say a word as he grabs Matt’s hand, laces their fingers together and pulls him away from the Christmas party.
