With its picture-perfect beaches, colourful street art and green parks complete with palm trees, Tauranga is a perfect chilled-out beachside city. But it’s Mauao (Mount Maunganui), an extinct volcano jutting out into the bay, which really sets it apart. Hiking trails weave up to the summit, which has panoramic views across the city to its white-sand beaches and the Pacific Ocean.

Mauao Kinetic Type Moving Image _ Explained

This is the explanation behind the frames in my kinetic type moving image.

The title - My Maunga, Mauao

My entire video was about the mountain I associate myself with, which is Mount Maunganui (aka, Mauao). I named my moving image 'My Maunga, Mauao' as it was a short and simple title that explained the entire clip.

The main element - Mountain

I chose to make a video about my mountain because it's part of the pepeha I like the most. I spent a lot of time at Mount when I lived in Tauranga, and it's a place that brings special memories to me.

Other design elements - Ocean/Beach waves

I added the ocean as part of my video - for both the intro and the ending credit. This is because Mauao is surrounded by the sea, and it also shows a connection to my Type Specimen Book.

Other design elements - The Sun

When researching in week 9, I found the Maori myth related to Mount Maunganui. It was called Legend of Mauao and carried the story of how the mountain got its name. The meaning of Mauao was 'caught by the morning sun, and I wanted to incorporate this into my video. To visually deliver this message, I decided to add the sunrise action.

Other design elements - Colours

I based my colours on the colour palette I used for the type specimen. I only made slight changes to fit with the background, and the sun was the only colour significantly different from the original palette. (Sun colour: #F2C01D)

The Ōi of Mauao

Seabird encounters are always special to me, and after a month of lockdown this one was particularly so.

The sky has faded from dusk blue to navy, a punch of cobalt where the sun has set. Smoky clouds are strewn across the sky, and we walk a gravel track under gnarled pōhutukawa, crunching through the dark. Turning a corner, I get a strong whiff through the understory of kawakawa. It’s unmistakable. It’s home.

Making (Finishing video + downloading sound effects)_Week 12

I've created the video up to the text 'ko mauao te maunga'. I still need to add the ending credit with the ocean waves, and edit more get to the final video.

Today I went on two websites to download all the sound effects needed. I used Mixkit and Epidemic Sound.

The sound effects are:

Woosh (for text transitions)

Waves (for ocean waves/water)

Splash (for text morph)

Birds (for the sunrise)

Bubbles (for water rising at the end)

My next step is to make the ending credit with the ocean waves and do the final touches. Final touches: Adjusting video length by speeding parts of it & adding sound effects.
