Population density in Australia
The population density map of Australia details the significant variation in population distribution across the continent, with the highest densities (1,000-10,000 people/km²) concentrated mainly on the south-eastern coast around major metropolitan areas such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and smaller pockets in the south-west around Perth. Areas of moderate density (100-1,000 people/km²) extend around these urban agglomerations, creating transition zones.
Despite its vast size, Australia is remarkably sparsely populated, largely due to the harsh climatic and geographical conditions of much of the country. Large areas of the central and northern parts of the continent are covered in deserts and semi-deserts, where high temperatures and limited access to water make life difficult, with most of the population concentrated on the southeastern and southwestern coasts, where the climate is milder and access to resources is better.

Sudanese Civil War, Feb. 2024
In 2024, Sudan continues to grapple with a devastating civil war that intensified in early 2023. The conflict is primarily between two government factions, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (known as Hemedti). The fighting is fueled by power struggles following the fall of Omar al-Bashir’s government in 2019 and instability over the country’s plans to transition to civilian rule. » The conflict has caused mass destruction, thousands of civilian casualties, and a huge influx of refugees. Many cities, including the capital Khartoum, have been destroyed, and access to basic services such as healthcare and food has been severely restricted. The international community, including the UN and the African Union, have repeatedly tried to negotiate a ceasefire, but the ongoing fighting has plunged the country into greater chaos and the humanitarian crisis has deepened.
