Movies of 2022 - My Summer Rundown (Part 1)

20.  DAY SHIFT – Neflix Originals continue to plug the cinematic gaps where needed with an array of impressive (frequently OTT fun) alternatives to big screen adventures, and this bonkers action horror throwback from the makers of the John Wick movies is a pedigree example of this particularly hardy breed.  Jamie Foxx is clearly having a blast chewing the scenery as Bub, the super-violent vampire hunter looking to get back into the good graces of the big-business Los Angeles hunters’ guild that kicked him out for being too overzealous.

19.  TOP GUN: MAVERICK – After a ton of Pandemic-based delays, the long-overdue sequel to Tony Scott’s heavyweight blockbuster popcorn magnet finally arrived to significant fanfare and great box office returns, and despite the inevitable anti-US war-machine grumblings it turned out to be well worth the wait. Tom Cruise steps back into the role that MADE HIS CAREER like he’s never been away as hotshot US Navy fighter ace Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returns to the elite fighter school to train a squadron of young pilots for a desperate secret mission.  Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski delivers thrills and spectacle by the bucketload in a bona fide rollercoaster ride that EASILY does the original justice.

18.  VENGEANCE – I love it when a sneaky smart little indie comes out of nowhere to blow me away, and this deeply satirical black comedy is a DOOZY.  B.J. Novak (The Office) makes his writer-director debut while also starring as aspiring elitist New York podcaster Ben Manalowitz, who hits upon a potential scoop when he winds up in smalltown Texas to attend the funeral of one of his former random hook-ups only to discover her family, led by her big brother Ty (an on-fire Boyd Holbrook), are convinced she was murdered.

17.  MEN – In truth more of AN EXPERIENCE than a film, this twisted existential horror fantasy is one of those movie’s you’re probably only gonna want to watch ONCE, but it’s also definitely one of those movies you REALLY SHOULD see.  Ex-Machina and Annihilation writer-director Alex Garland has put together his most full-on balls-tripping madass feature to date with this fundamentally ODD film about Harper (Wild Rose’s Jessie Buckley), a deeply troubled new widow who’s vacationing alone in a quaint English country house, only to find herself terrorised by a succession of seemingly demonic men who all have the same face (the immensely talented Rory Kinnear delivering one of the best and most impressively varied turns I’ve ever seen him deliver).

16.  SAMARITAN – Overlord director Julius Avery has delivered another cracker with this gleefully inventive and explosively robust alternative take on a superhero movie in which Sylvester Stallone lands one of his most interesting and meaty roles IN AGES as the titular former superpowered crime fighter who finds himself dragged out of his long self-imposed social exile by twelve year-old fanboy Sam (Euphoria’s Javon Walton) when local aspiring crime-boss Cyrus (a typically mesmerising Pilou Asbæk) attempts to spur a citywide uprising.

15.  LIGHTYEAR – Disney/Pixar bring the high-powered origin story of Toy Story’s intergalactic hero Buzz Lightyear to the big screen in fine style in this all-action animated sci-fi treat that sees Chris Evans take on another iconic role after ending his tenure as Captain America with his usual enthusiastic, large-than-life aplomb.  Finding Dory director Angus MacLane delivers thrills, spills and deep belly-laughs as Buzz and a ragtag crew of less-than-prime Space Rangers (which includes a wonderfully game Taika Waititi) fight to save their world from the threat of Zurg …

14.  THE FORGIVEN – Masterful writer-director John Michael McDonaugh (The Guard, Calvary) delivers an emotionally charged and deeply resonant psychological slow-burn thriller adapted from Lawrence Osborne’s acclaimed novel.  Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain both deliver spellbindingly complex performances as the souring upper class couple faced with a crushing moral quandary after accidentally running over a boy in the Moroccan desert on their way to a high society party held by Matt Smith’s idle rich socialite.

13.  BEAST – Idris Elba is at his usual charismatic-yet-vulnerable best as out-of-his-depth Dr Nate Samuels, the father of two wilful teenage girls who finds himself fighting to protect his family from a ferocious rogue lion while visiting old friend Martin (Sharlto Copley), a wildlife biologist working in the South African bush.  Director Baltasar Kormakur has made quite a career shepherding man-against-nature thrillers to the big screen (The Deep, Everest, Adrift), so he’s more than capable of delivering on the super-tense thrills required here.

12.  FIRESTARTER – The second big screen adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most criminally underrated novels may have tanked at the box office (then again, its simultaneous streaming release on Peacock can’t have helped) and been largely panned by critics, but I thought it was a rousing success.  Zac Efron is darkly charismatic as telepathic fugitive Andy McGee, determined to keep his troubled pre-teen pyrokinetic daughter Charlie (The Tomorrow War’s Ryan Keira Armstrong) out of the clutches of the clandestine government outfit looking to profit from her potentially devastating powers, with Keith Thomas (director of acclaimed indie horror The Vigil) bringing Halloween Kills writer Scott Teems’ tight, taut and rewardingly stripped-back script to compelling life.

11.  THE SEA BEAST – Neflix made an impressive stab at grabbing the animation crown for the summer with this wildly-inventive and thoroughly rewarding nautical family adventure fantasy set in a world where a whole society has grown up around the hunting of massive sea monsters.  The classic pirate cinema conventions are paid suitably rip-roaring tribute as we follow Karl Urban and Jared Harris’ salty buccaneers on their quest to bring down the fearsome Red Bluster, only to discover what they’ve been brought up believing could be very wrong indeed …

I know that my love obsession for Top Gun Maverick is a little very OTT but I genuinely don't understand when people say it's a terrible film or that it's just mindless fluff.

Like, I'm not asking for everyone to love it like I do, but be reasonable in acknowledging how good it is at least.

1986-ban mindössze egy esztendős voltam. A Tony Scott-féle Top Gun pedig akkor látott napvilágot és learatott szinte mindent amit csak lehetett, azóta pedig nem is készült nála ikonikusabb repülős film. Természetesen repüléstechnikai szempontból nem volt egy vitaindító alkotás, ez tény, de egy olyan korban, ahol még szinte senki nem látott a mozivásznon videóklipesen bemutatott harci repülőket szép pilótákkal, fullos napszemüvegekkel, ott mindenképpen figyelemreméltó alkotás. Folytatás a tovább mögött.

Az új Top Gun is egy igazi nagybetűs mozifilm, olyan film, amely könyörög azért, hogy a moziban nézd meg, hiszen pár képkocka alatt rögtön rájössz, hogy TV-n csak feleannyit fog tudni nyújtani. Természetesen ebből következően ez egy propagandafilm is, ami egy ismét kialakulófélben lévő hidegháborús helyzet egyik első darabja lehet, és bővelkedik is minden stílusjeggyel, amely a propagandafilmekre jellemző: gondolok itt arra, hogy pl. minden szereplő csinos, szép, mosolygós, cool, vonzó és a mű megtekintése után kicsit mindenki pilóta akar lenni. Az egyik filmkritikában valaki úgy fogalmazott, hogy az új Top Gun olyan, mint a Baywatch csak repülőkkel. Alighanem ez a megállapítás teljesen helyénvaló. 

Tom Cruise pedig egy kibaszott legenda, nem tudok rá mást mondani. Az, hogy valaki 60 évesen még mindig saját maga csinálja a kaszkadőrmutatványok jelentős részét, az eléggé kemény; valamint hogy maximalizmusa és profizmusa miatt csúszik a film megjelenése 9 hónapot – tudniillik Cruise meg akart tanulni vadászgépet vezetni, mert úgy érezte, hogy nem hiteles, ha csak a semmiből eljátssza az aviátort –, az szintén figyelemre méltó. Ráadásul úgy játszik le mindenkit a vászonról, hogy öröm nézni. A fiatal színészek többsége is érzékelhetően “műsoron kívül” is felnéznek rá, és nem csak a szerepük kedvéért. Ez baromira átjön a filmből. Engem az döbbentett le igazán, amikor a tengerparti jelenetben – ahol a pilóták valami strandrögbit játszanak egymással és mindenki félmeztelen volt, ott Cruise is póló nélkül szerepelt és nem igazán kellett szégyenkeznie a felsőteste miatt a nálánál 30 évvel fiatalabbak között. Tom Cruise egy igazi hollywoodi ikon, talán az egyik utolsó. 

A film képi világa sokkal jobb és kiforrottabb, mint az előző részé, bár ez nem meglepő, hiszen 36 év van a két epizód között, de azért az mégis jól látszik, hogy az elmúlt cirka 40 évben milyen irányba haladt a coolság vonala. Sárgás naplementék, tökéletesen kivillanó fogsorok, hibátlan testek, fényben megcsillanó Ray-Ban Aviátorok és ezek mellé minden nüansznyi apróság még, melyek remekül fémjelzik, hogy hogyan lehet csúcsra járatni egy ikonikus mozifilmet.

A zene pedig szintén fasza. A régi jól megszokott dallamok visszatérnek, hozzák a libabőrt, de nekem például film közben tűnt fel, hogy nagyon ismerős szerzői stílust hallok, amely összetéveszthetetlen minden mással, és ez nem volt más mint Hans Zimmer. Különösen a film vége felé csendülnek fel a hősies Top Gun-témák, amik dicshimnuszként remekül működnek. 

Szóval, Hollywood mindig is ebben volt igazán erős: amikor narratívát kellett adni a világnak. Mert hiába éltél Oroszországban vagy Kínában, akkor is a nyugati filmeket nézted és azokon nőttél fel, onnan szerezted a benyomásaidat a hősiességről, bátorságról, minden másról. Ma ez megkopni látszik és az igazi hollywood-ot leváltotta valami túlideologizált, szakmaiatlan, profitéhes streaming-maszlag, ami már nyomokban sem tartalmazza a fent leírtakat. Ez a Top Gun: Maverick kicsit olyan, mint egy múzeum, ahol bele tudsz nézni abba, hogy régen milyenek voltak a jó filmek.

19.  HELLBOY – I’d be the first to agree we really don’t need a Hellboy movie reboot (just let Guillermo finish his trilogy, dammit!), but if Hollywood MUST disagree then we could do A LOT worse than this far bloodier R-rated full-on horror flick from Dog Soldiers director Neil Marshall, who really cranks up the darkness inherent in the franchise.  Ultimately this is more for hardcore fans of Mike Mignola’s original comics than the uneducated masses, but Stranger Things star David Harbour’s “Big Red” is just one of many pleasures here.

18.  THE SISTERS BROTHERS – writer-director Jacques Audiard (The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Rust & Bone) crafts a languid, introspective and richly character-driven western from the novel by Thomas Bidegain (who also co-wrote here).  Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly are both typically excellent as the titular bounty-hunter siblings who are the nominal focus of the story, but the film is as much focused on their prey, a pair of gold prospectors (Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed) with a revolutionary scientific method.

17.  THE DIRT – in a year when they’re jumping on the biopic bandwagon in a big way (we’ve also seen the hunt for Bonny & Clyde in The Higwaymen), Netflix got particularly ambitious with this warts-and-all, thoroughly OTT and often very funny account of the rise/fall/rise-again of notorious glam metal band Mötley Crüe from Jackass director Jeff Tremaine.  Douglas Booth (Romeo & Juliet), Colson Backer (aka Machine Gun Kelly), Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) and Daniel Webber (11.22.63) bring the band to life in all their debauched glory.

16.  COLD PURSUIT – Liam Neeson gently sends up his geriatric-arse-kicker persona in this jet black comedy thriller from acclaimed Norwegian director Hans Petter Morland, adapted from his own hit film In Order of Disappearance (originally starring Stellan Skarsgaard).  Neeson is huge fun as the snow-plough driver out to avenge the murder of his son at the hands of jumped-up Denver drug kingpin “Viking” (TV’s Jekyll & Hyde’s Thomas Bateman), causing all kinds of bloody hell to break loose in the snowbound Colorado wilderness.

15.  VICE – Anchorman writer-director Adam McKay continues down the more semi-serious road he began with his 2015 hit The Big Short with this incendiary “biopic” of the rise to power of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, rumoured to be the true “power behind the throne” of George W. Bush’s controversial term in office at the White House.  Christian Bale delivers one of the finest performances of his career as the unassumingly Machiavellian master manipulator behind the WMD Conspiracy, et al.  MAYBE …

14.  ON THE BASIS OF SEX – director Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker, Deep Impact) returns to the big screen with a vengeance with this powerful, thought-provoking and very important courtroom drama following the early career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the crusading firebrand lawyer campaigning for women’s equal rights who ultimately became Chief Justice for the U.S. Supreme Court.  Rogue One star Felicity Jones is perfectly cast as a woman who let NOTHING stand in the way of her dreams, even the laws of the United States.

13.  DESTROYER – Karyn Kusama has had a somewhat mixed career since her directorial debut with Girlfight in 2000 (Jennifer’s Body was enjoyable, but Aeon Flux was pretty embarrassing), but this edgy, doom-laden modern LA-Noir is a spectacular return to form, driven by a powerhouse, vanity-free career-best performance from Nicole Kidman as the self-destructive maverick LAPD cop whose youthful misadventures undercover return haunt her, with bloody consequences.

12.  THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING – Louis Ashbourne Serkis (son of Andy) proves he takes right after his dad as an unassuming British schoolboy who discovers he’s the long-lost heir of King Arthur, destined to wield Excalibur in the battle to prevent the cataclysmic return of evil sorceress Morgana (Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson).  Attack the Block writer-director Joe Cornish brings us something more family-friendly with his long-awaited follow-up, but his gleefully dark, anarchic sense of humour remains intact.

11.  TRIPLE FRONTIER – Margin Call writer-director J.C. Chandor teams up with Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) on what is EASILY the best Netflix Originals feature this year (so far, at least), a nail-bitingly tense, morally ambiguous suspense thriller following a group of former special forces operatives (Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal) who rob a drug lord and then have to fight their way out of the notorious titular South American region.

The GoFundMe website has frozen access to nearly $4.5 million in funds raised by the trucker convoy now travelling across the country to Ottawa in protest of vaccine mandates.

According to Rachel Hollis, a spokeswoman for the crowdfunding platform, fundraisers must be transparent about how funds will be spent. "We have reached out to the organizer to verify that information," Hollis said in an email.

The organizer will be required to give our team documentation about the proper distribution of funds before the funds can be released." According to the GoFundMe page of the "Freedom Convoy," 58,300 donors had contributed to the cause.

Tamara Lich, who is also the secretary of the fledgling separatist Western Maverick Party, launched the campaign on Jan. 14. Funds will be used for fuel as well as food and lodging for big-rigger participants.

A GoFundMe page for the convoy states that "our current government is imposing rules and mandates that are destroying the foundation of our businesses, industries and livelihoods."

"Historically, we have helped protect nations across the globe from tyrannical governments who oppressed their people, and now it seems that is happening to us."

Since Jan. 15, truckers need to be fully vaccinated if they want to avoid a 14-day quarantine when they cross the border from the United States.

Minister of Labour Seamus O'Regan has also announced vaccinations will become mandatory for all federally regulated workers, though no timeline has been given.

According to Canadian Trucking Alliance, which denounced the convoy protest, more than 85 percent of the 120,000 Canadian truckers travelling across the border are fully vaccinated, but up to 16,000 may be sidelined as a result of the new restriction, further complicating supply chain issues.

“Vaccination in combination with preventive measures, according to the government of Canada and the CTA, is the most-effective way to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in Canadians, and to protect public health."
