It's been nearly 10 years since hockey player Braden Nienaber had his wish granted by the Washington Capitals.
The then eight-year-old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was fighting Histiocytosis, a life-threatening blood disease that had attacked his bones. Through Canada's Children's Wish Foundation he and his family had simply requested to attend a Capitals home game and skate with Braden Holtby and other Capitals players.
You might ask: why was a kid from Canada a Washington Capitals fan? It all goes back to when Braden's name twin Braden Holtby lived two doors down from the Nienabers while playing for the Saskatoon Blades. The two became friends and the rest was history.
A lot has transpired since Braden visited D.C. where he "fought" with Tom Wilson, hung out with Braden Holtby, and participated in a ceremonial puck drop with Alex Ovechkin.
Braden is now just your typical teenage kid and aside from the scars due to his surgeries, you'd never have guessed he was ever sick. He's had a busy past couple of months graduating high school and signing a contract with the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League...
...To celebrate the signing and graduating high school, his family held a graduation party for him in June, where he was surprised by Tom Wilson with a special congratulations video.
He never saw it coming.
"My head started spinning, it was surreal, I could not believe what was happening," he said. "The only thing going on in my head was, holy, this is really happening."
He went on: "a flood of memories came running to my head that brought out a big smile and a couple tears because Tom Wilson is and will always be a special role model to me on and off the ice. My family made that day special, and Tom made it even more special."
The narrative arc here is just delightful.

In my relatively short career as A Guy Who Watches Hockey Games (In Person) I have realized that there is in fact a "bucket list" of things a person wishes to see. Some things -- a goalie goal, for example -- are so infinitesimally unlikely you can't really bank on ever getting to see one; if you went to a game where a goalie scored a goal, You won hockey, doesn't matter what the score was. It is not my mission to see one of these, but here's what I actually do want to see:
Every currently operating Great One (Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid, Matthews, Bedard). I have seen 2/5 -- Bedard and Matthews (in the same game, even -- went to Leafs/Hawks in Chicago). It brings me great pleasure to note that I have seen rookie Connor Bedard. It was from very far away (press box seats. thanks dave!!! <- not sarcasm i had a lot of fun) but I can confirm he is that tiny IRL. The hope is to see at least one more this season; the Caps come to Ottawa (my current home arena, and there is no way I'm paying for Leafs home tickets) twice in January, and I might see the Pens in Detroit also.
Speaking of AM34 I would like to see him score a GOAL. Auston that's basically your whole thing. Auston please. Your goals
I have seen two hat tricks (Mika Zibanejad JIMMY VESEY!??? pre-COVID when i did Not care about hockey, Jason Dickinson in the aforementioned Leafs/Hawks game). I would like to see a hat trick from someone i CARE about oh my god.
This is not a bucket list item but I have been going around telling people I saw a Mika Zibanejad hat-trick this whole fucking time and it was JIMMY VESEY????? Mika got 3 assists and I think I remembered him more than Jimmy FUCKING Vesey because Jimmy Vesey is (as established in iconic piece of 21st century tragedy filmmaking All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs) vanilla as fuck and Mika has a name and identity that really clicks with you when you are 15 and only at this hockey game because you're on spring break vacation with your absent father and he really likes hockey. Jimmy fucking Vesey
This is an internal betrayal of the highest degree.
I would like to see a fun comeback; either the home team at a game where I am a neutral party, or the Leafs.
I want to see a game at everyone's home stadium. Currently at 4/32 (MSG, Scotiabank, CTC, United Center (NYR/TOR/OTT/CHI))
I don't care about normal fights (half a lie; they're fun but not a bucket list item) but I would kill to see a goalie fight
A playoff game. Ideally one where the Leafs win, but I will take what I can get
A playoff game that goes into at least double OT. This is technically separate from the previous statement but combined would be fun.
This is a rare one: I want to be at one of those games that you can refer to in shorthand and everyone who's a serious fan will go oh, That game. Like not "They lost in OT in Chicago and some dude scored a hat-trick and Willy's point streak broke" shorthand. "10-7 in Detroit" shorthand. "Steve Dangle's most viewed video" shorthand. Post-a-screenshot-and-people-know type of shorthand. Good or bad. I just want it to be weird

as I get ever closer to finishing the campal fic which is taking me too long because frequent breaks for Having Emotions about campal, i find i need some motivation to spur myself on via my tried and true carrot and stick method of fic writing, but the problem is none of my other wips are the specific carrot i want right now. so instead i've been thinking of the fic idea/vibe I've been rotating in my head for literal weeks now, which consists of the following:
at first, I simply wanted to write something dumb about Bucky's dumb hair, because I am as always feeling the equivalent of cute aggression about sebstan's stupid beautiful hair, and all the photos from Cannes did NOT help. for this idea, i had: one (1) joke about bucky being his own inadvertent hair care product ad campaign (something something 'because you're worth it,' i was gonna figure out the punchline later), and one (1) barebones scene where steve says "actually, i used you as a model for a pomade ad i was hired to illustrate, so you've kind of already been a hair model" and i thought "hmm what if this scene was not funny but was instead fraught with sexual and emotional tension"
anyway, this didn't pan out, because i kept rotating it in my head and shaking it all "is this anything??? is this anything? like, is there a character arc here, some development--" and the answer was just more lustenvyrage re sebstan's hair. so this idea was set aside.
next i remembered that i've always been interested in writing SOMETHING about the way Steve and Bucky fight with each other with frankly preternatural seamlessness in CACW. I've referenced this in a couple fics, but I kind of want to write a fic that's ABOUT it, y'know?? like, the way their bodies are legible to each other even after so many changes. the way they know each other's bodies so well, the way their bodies talk to each other, in contrast to the ways they themselves don't actually manage to talk about the important shit. obvsly in a fic, this would go fighting together > fucking.
i am also thinking about this vis-a-vis "stop writing characters who talk like they're trying to get a good grade in therapy". like. maybe i don't want them to TALK. maybe i want them to be insane weirdos about it. maybe they should sublimate all their emotions into fucking and weird OTT devoted gestures.
however, i am not actually interested in writing post-cacw pre-infinity war fic. so i did a lot of rotating in my head re canon setting, AU-ness, etc.
my other desire here is to, for the love of god, write something that isn't CUTE. listen, I know my fic writing lane. I appreciate all comments. I in fact have a great deal of fun writing things that are sweet and cute and hopefully also poignant and funny. but sometimes a girl gets real tired of having most things she writes classified as cute.
here is the additional thought i had today re this hypothetical fic: haunted house. not a literal haunted house, but a metaphorical one. (but also an actual house that is not actually haunted) (the metaphor is the house = the relationship, ofc) the house is being haunted by grief, the house is being haunted by regret, the house is being haunted by guilt.
so now i am here trying to fit all these disparate parts together into something coherent. like, if i write this, what is the resolution. what is the arc. i may not want to write something cute but i am still committed to reasonably happy endings. so the house is unhaunted? the house is still haunted but they live with the ghosts? they move to a new house???? (not sure how this works with the metaphor?? wait. maybe. hmm.) could this fic please god be under 10k????
anyway now i can't let it go until i solve it and i have written this whole thing in an attempt to figure it out/exorcise the idea. annoying.
this, fyi, is how my fic planning process goes when I can't/don't start with either: a) a punchline, b) a wouldn't-it-be-funny-if, or c) an actual trope or prompt. so great. so efficient and useful and fun ;___;

Having fun coming up with ghost OCs for the one where Steve sees dead people 👻
So far, I’m thinking (spoilers I guess???):
A conman disguised as a priest for his conning/to escape the law - he died when he had an allergic reaction to something he was fed by the then residents
A 60s actress who was filming the pilot for a show sold as James Bond or The Man From UNCLE meets Star Trek, but she was electrocuted halfway through shooting, so she’s in some OTT alien/spy getup
Maybe a dude who slipped and fell in the shower and thus is wearing a strategically placed shower curtain for eternity
Also, thank you to everyone who’s interested in the fic!! I’ve started planning/researching and I’m pretty excited about it

stevie is very used to girls only focusing on the superficial, surface-level stuff that he was known for as king steve. he’s not cocky but he’s used to only being appreciated for his looks so it doesn’t make him feel special. but you come along and you notice his loyalty, empathy and generosity. when you tell him this it makes him fold like he turns into a blubbering blushing mess. and yes you find him pretty and remind him of that often, but no matter how long you’re together it still makes him so flustered and bashful, more than any compliment about his stupid big hair ever has </3
i purposely left this in my ask box because i wanted to give it the response it deserved and some ott emotional breakdown it would have got last night 😭
but yes. so much yes!! like of course you tell him how pretty and handsome he is like all the time but the moment you tell him he’s a good person for the very first time? poor stevie is a wreck🥺 and he tries to shrug it off like he isn’t, like it’s just whatever but no. you tell him again and again and again and he’s just so !!! his cheeks are flushed and he’s smiling that stupid dopey smile and he can’t get his words out trying to form some sort of response to tell you how grateful he is that you think that but he can’t so he just wraps you up in his arms and smooches you all over your face :(

The phrase "heart skips" seems purposely vague, but the constant praise for Steve in the script is bizarre. Not to mention the part about Robin "understanding Steve's pain"...I think Robin has it a bit worse than Steve wrt finding love and I'll just leave it at that.
Agreed even “heart skips” is vague and that’s what they were going for, but it comes across as their aim was unresolved feelings (but for the nuggets; I still don’t see how that was unresolved when she called it a nightmare, but not sure the writers got that).
And then I’m just afjgdshkkhg at the “All too Well (Steve’s Version)”, bc come on, I don’t think he was 🎶 a crumpled up piece of paper lying here🎶. Not to diminish Steve’s feelings which he seems to had gotten over (so weird to put him back in them), but like he hit on his ex who has a bf, was fantasizing about having six kids together and in that end scene looked kinda just peeved that “oh and here’s Jonathan again smh” (seriously the tension between stonathan needs to be explored I’m telling you). And yes def Robin has it harder than Steve pls! So that direction was a bit ott lol. And then it’s still annoying they didn’t give us enough of Nancy’s pov but cut her off in the woods for s5 reasons ig.

Once they start dating, Eddie finds a new seat in Steve's lap. They could be anywhere, just hanging out, with their friends, in a bar or at a diner. And there could be plenty of available seats around...but Eddie always has to sit in Steve's lap. Not just because he wants to, but because Steve wants him too also. 😌 They're both very clingy at heart, and are prone to falling into their little love bubble even in public. They'll giggle and whisper things to each other with Eddie in Steve's lap much to the gross factor of all their friends who have to witness their ott displays of affection often. Everyone is happy for them. But if they could not be glued together every once in a while, that'd be great.
Except they won't do that.

Just for fun, have some random tidbits and trivia about With a Little Help From My Friends. Much like the fic itself, this list got quite long, so I’m putting it under the cut…
I don’t write nearly enough about Eddie and Robin’s friendship, but in both ch 8 and ch 24 when Eddie is in dire straits, Robin is literally the first person he thinks of that he can go to for help.
In ch 10 while Eddie and Max are at the store, he’s debating between Red Vines and Twizzlers, eventually choosing Twizzlers. Later in ch 26 Max says Twizzlers are her favorite candy. And yes, it’s totally because of him.
In ch 12, all that stuff about Temple Grandin and the cows is true. And it totally seemed like something Suzie would just know, and Dustin would eagerly research because he wants to help his bestie.
When I wrote ch 22– the Jason in Pennhurst visited by a vision of El chapter— I had totally forgotten about how Jason kicked Gareth’s ass, but looking back and adding that tidbit to El’s motivations in keeping Jason exactly where he is gives it an extra zesty flavor.
Ch 28, the drabble where Wayne finally makes things official with Claudia, is probably the hardest I’ve ever laughed while writing.
Ch 33 contains a little drabble about Eddie and Chrissy just relaxing in a hammock together, and I honestly think it might be one of the best things I’ve ever written.
In ch 41 Steve probably seems pretty OOC at the beginning. That was deliberate— he’d just gotten back from spending a ton of time with his parents, and no longer has any idea who he actually is. By the end of ch 42 he’s getting back to his real self.
Also in ch 41 Steve refers to Grant as “T.B. Player” purely for a little in-joke with my own self regarding the movie That Thing You Do!, where the bass player never gets a name throughout the entire movie despite being a main character with lots of lines, and in the end credits is listed as T.B. Player. Justice for unnamed freak!
The part in ch 61 where first Eddie and then Steve are teaching Gareth to dance is one of my favorite scenes. If I could draw, I would’ve drawn it!
In ch 63– Will’s letters to Jonathan— I didn’t include Jonathan’s letters back because I just could. not. get his voice right. Jonathan, Nancy, Lucas, Mike, and ironically Steve are the characters that I have the hardest time getting into their heads. I love them all to bits but that’s why I rarely write their pov’s.
Ch 64 was a tough one for me to write and I’m not sure I managed to strike the right balance between Party shenanigans/hellcheer wedding planning vs Robin’s very real fears regarding her parents’ reaction to finding out she was dating Vickie. If I could rewrite the whole fic, this would be the chapter I’d start with. BUT, one thing I liked about it was Steve repairing the crocheted blanket just so Robin could unravel it again. In the Lostsoul Universe, many Party members have told Steve “I love you” but the only time he ever says it back is in this chapter, to Robin. Poor dude.
Ch 66 might seem way OTT but I stand by it. Because it happened to me.
I wrote ch 73 for the sole purpose of giving Eddie a kitten named Lucifer Dio. (Lucy for short!) He absolutely gives cat dad energy.
In ch 79 we find out how Henry Creel became Vecna. Dr. Brenner gave him an experimental drug I called “exousía”. This was a very deliberate choice. Exousía is a Greek word meaning power/control/dominion— all the things Brenner was so hungry for. I based this on googling the word “Soteria” (the implant in Henry’s neck) and discovering that it was an actual Greek word with the meanings of deliverance/healing/salvation. Food for thought!!! Honestly I was a little sad that nobody picked up on how clever I’d been with that name 🙄😂 but that was a really long chapter with a lot going on so it’s understandable.
Feel free to ask me any questions you might have or just holler at me!

Who let the dog out? This incarnation of the 80s Grue Crew did, for their 100th episode together and for this year’s Halloween episode. For the occasions, they dip back into the Stephen King well for one of the trio of his films released in 1983: Cujo. Unleash the terror! Despite the puns, this film has a lot going for it. Director Lewis Teague gets powerful performances from Dee Wallace and Danny Pintauro that make Cujo a truly terrifying and heartwrenching movie. And then, there’s that rabid giant of a dog! The 80s bunch loves it! Even so, they go oft astray.
At the time of this writing, Cujo is available for streaming from MAX, as well as PPV from multiple sources. It is also available on physical media as Cujo (40th Anniversary Edition) in standard Blu-ray or 4K UHD formats from KL Studio Classics.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be Maximum Overdrive (1986). It’s a King doubleheader and a double tap for the latter. Who doesn’t love a Green Goblin-adorned semi-truck?
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].
