#WESTANDWITHMIZZOU - McMaster University Solidarity Project

McMaster University students participated in solidarity a project, sharing their own personal experiences of being black on campus, and expressing words of support and solidarity to the black students at the University of Missouri, who are being subjected to an extremely racist and hostile campus environment by students and faculty with whom they share their campus with.

This morning I was missing my mom so much I couldn't breathe. Sunday will be the 3 month anniversary of her death and Thursday is my first major holiday without a family. After feeling bad for myself I finally managed to scrape myself off the couch, spackle my face with make up and stumble into school. The employees at Tim Hortons were so kind to me, they told me I had a beautiful smile, never question my weird order that accommodates my cerebral palsy, and wished me a nice day. The Double Crested Cormorant

The Double Crested Cormorant is not a stranger to the Great lakes. When looking at their migration and inhabitance of Lake Ontario and their nesting patterns, you will see that they are causing many problems as being one of the top predators of this ecosystem.

Professor Sibley, of the University of Guelph identifies the most ideal nesting areas of the Cormorants as being:

Islands

Spit-Type Areas

Isolated

When they inhabit a location and nesting ground they completely subdue the area and the habitat as a result is completely destroyed

Studies conducted by Dr. James Quinn of McMaster University in Hamilton has concluded that the nesting patterns of the Cormorants are causing problems and competition for territory amongst Herring Gulls. As the Cormorants are larger birds and they physically by force push away the other birds to claim the nesting space.

Population trends of the birds surrounding and within the Hamilton Harbour are overall on target, however the number of Double Crested Cormorants is in fact an area of concern.

"The Cormorants are being very successful because there is a good supply of food and the spacial resources are there for nesting the birds are going to do well, and they have,"Professor Sibley of University of Guelph explained.

"It's the basic ecological principles, populations regulate themselves based on the resources available to them," he added.
