This Memorial Day, we honor all those who have given their lives in service of our nation. In addition to protecting important ecosystems and habitats, your National Marine Sanctuary System also protects maritime heritage resources that tell the story of our maritime nation. Let's go back in time and visit USS Monitor, now protected by Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

Constructed in 1862, the USS Monitor was our nation's first ironclad warship. Tragically, later that year the ship sank in a storm off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, taking 16 brave crew members with it into the ocean depths. In 1975, its resting place became our first national marine sanctuary, Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. In 2013, two of these sailors – whose remains were discovered in the ironclad’s turret when it was recovered from the seafloor – were laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

1 SEPTEMBER 1921 – The U.S. Army Military District of Washington (USAMDW) traces its origin to 1 September 1921 when the War Department – predecessor of the Department of the Army – established the District of Washington. That command included the military units and installations in the District of Columbia, Fort Washington, Maryland, and Forts Hunt and Myer, Virginia, but existed only until 1927. On 5 May 1942, shortly after the United States entered World War II, the War Department formed the Military District of Washington (MDW) to plan and execute the ground and anti-aircraft defense of the nation’s capital. As the Army transformed its wartime stateside logistical structure from nine corps areas to the Army Service Forces (ASF) and its subordinate Support Commands, MDW became one of those commands. MDW assumed responsibility for supporting the Army Headquarters commandant and the newly-completed Pentagon, in addition to Walter Reed Army Hospital, as well as ceremonial activities in Washington with the U.S. Army Band as a subordinate unit. General George C. Marshall, began thinking about allowing women to serve in a limited combat role, in assignments to the anti-aircraft units of the Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) in the Continental United States. December 1942 “Battery X” was formed. These Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAACS) members were the first women in U.S. history to be part of a military unit and were authorized to wear the branch insignia of the Coast Artillery. With the assignment of the 3d Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) after World War II, MDW retained its ground tactical defense of the capital mission and expanded support for official government ceremonies and the important role of presenting the Army to the American public. In the 1980s, MDW took responsibility for the daily operation of Arlington National Cemetery (ANC). A Direct Reporting Unit (DRU) to Headquarters Department of the Army, with headquarters at Fort Lesley J.
