Okay, so I have a few ideas for original stories, but the two that I've started are "The Prince & The Botanist" and "All's Fair". I write exclusively queer fiction and romance, because when I was a gay little kid growing up there wasn't a lot of variation, and certainly no fantasy novels with queer leading characters! (Which I suspect is why I projected so much onto The Hobbit and LotR, and Bilbo in particular)

"The Prince & The Botanist" is my murder mystery! It's about a reclusive botanist, Dante Morsatra, who has isolated himself from the rest of the nobility, and started up a sort of school/apprenticeship for the common folk. He's considered pretty odd, and the Court all give him a wide berth and let him get on with it, until one day someone who antagonised him and made his life miserable growing up is brutally poisoned. One of the princes of the realm, Lucien Advaris, is put in charge of finding the culprit, but after meeting Dante he decides to use his knowledge of botany as a resource, all while keeping an eye on his prime suspect.

Despite having started this wayyyy before I started writing fic for The Hobbit, I'll be honest and say this one is extremely bagginshield coded! To the point where I actually considered turning it into an AU, lol.

"All's Fair" is my captured princess/enemies-to-lovers story! Alenia is my leading lady, a lonely princess who's waiting to come of age so she can be wed in a political marriage arranged by her father and older brother, but the realm is at war, and shortly after her father rides out to lead the failing armies of their country, they lose. The enemies are at the gates and take over the capital in a single night. Virion, the new ruler of the country, decides to keep Alenia and her older brother, Alosrin, alive as hostages to make the transition of power easier and not rouse any sympathy in the people who don't currently seem inclined to fight back against the new regime. Virion finds Alenia much easier to deal with than her older brother, so the pair of them end up speaking often, playing chess of an evening, and eventually making a deal to benefit them both!

Thank you for asking me about them! I have such an itch to work on them at the moment (specifically "All's Fair") but I want to finish BTTW and Soldier, Poet, King first, at the very least! ★ if you couldn't guess by my url i'm also brainrotting hard over twisted wonderland lately and will likely continue doing so for the foreseeable future. i have soooo much love for so many of the characters i literally can't even pick a favorite dorm. but riddle and idia are practically tied for the spot of my fave character and i ship riddle/floyd and idia/vil very hard.

★ i am very into pokemon but especially the hoenn, unova, alola, and paldea regions and the pokemon mystery dungeon series. love pokemon adventures/pokespe as well.

★ also majorly obsessed with baldur's gate 3 at the moment. especially gale. and elenion, my silly little half-elf bard guy that i romanced gale with 💜 and i don't see this changing anytime soon either.

★ so the above things are kinda the main fandoms you'll see on here but my brain is also constantly hopping between other interests and getting me in the mood to reblog and talk about different things!! some of those other things can include uhhhh the PJO universe, utdr, a3! act addict actors, twewy, the original sherlock holmes stories + granada TV series, LOTR, ace attorney, avatar the last airbender, neopets, and also just. so many other things. unfortunately i shove 90% of what i like onto here instead of having sideblogs for the most part.

So, just a bit about me: I'm 19, and a student in uni. I'm actually pretty introverted, very non-confrontational, but I'll definitely open up if I feel close to someone. I love being by myself and living in my thoughts. There are definitely moments where I go off, and can't shut up because I'm in an especially good mood, but honestly, I'm chill most of the time. Movies are my LIFE. Friday nights are made for my fav flicks and an icy can of coke <3 I'm not really looking for anything particular in a partner. Of course every relationship should be founded on faithfulness, love, and loyalty, but apart from that, if it clicks, it clicks! You and Bob met each other your first year of college. He was attending the air force academy, but you lived near each other and ended up seeing each other a lot.

He always noticed you, and wanted to talk to you but was too shy. One day when you happened to run into each other on a walk, you started talking and pretty much never stopped.

There was obvious attraction between the two of you, so though you started out as friends, it was not long before you started dating.

You supported Bob 100% when he was attending Top Gun. And though you always worried for his safety when he was in the sky, you trusted him and knew he was great at what he did.

Anytime he was shipped off somewhere, he would write you long detailed letters. And whenever he returned home, he would spent as much time with you as he could. Being away from you was his least favorite part of his job.

Favorites: What types of books do you enjoy? Tell about what you’ve read recently (Or maybe about a book you hated recently!)I like spec-fic and sci-fi, although less “hard” science fiction, and I also enjoy fantasy. I read a lot of YA even though I’m in my 30s just because it seems easy to find a story I want to read and I’m not usually in the mood for dense prose.

I’ve been rereading the Wheel of Time series since it’s getting an Amazon TV show; it was my first non-LOTR fantasy series and I love it to death, warts and all, although I love joking about the weak points with other people who’ve read it. I think the last other thing I read was A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, which was a queer YA historical fiction, and it was a lot of fun. I wish I’d had access to all these queer stories when I was an actual teenager, but better late than never.

What types of music do you like to listen to? Share five songs from your music library. I really do like a bit of everything, although I gravitate towards certain genres more often depending on the season or time of day, so I’m going to cheat and pick 5 per season. Do you have a show or movie that you can just put on anytime and it’s your comfort? Definitely Star Trek. I’ve rewatched the various iterations (except TOS) so many times. Also Mean Girls and Bring It On, idk why.

Do you have a favorite dessert? Tiramisu or creme brulée! Or macarons. I don’t eat dessert really unless I’m at a restaurant.

Do you have a favorite cold drink? Sparkling water, hands down.

Do you have a favorite part of your self care/beauty/health routine? I haven’t been doing it much lately since I’ve been dealing with some uncertain health issues with my joints (actually have a rheumatologist appointment later today), but savasana after a long yoga workout is borderline ecstasy.

What’s your favorite type of exercise/physical activity? I have a love-hate relationship with running. I don’t actually love it but I love how I feel after. I really enjoy yoga. I love playing in the water at the beach, bodyboarding and swimming.

What’s something random that you’re into (even if you aren’t good at it)? I signed up for a Cape Breton step dancing class in university and I loved it.

Are you good at putting away your clean laundry right away? It depends on the day, but generally yes. Mine and everyone else’s. When I lived alone? Absolutely not.

What’s one of your pet peeves? Someone trying to have a conversation with me when they have the radio or TV on. I can’t follow what you’re saying if someone else is speaking! I hate having that stuff on as background noise in general.

What’s something you’re pretty good at? I’m a great cook.

What’s the most recent nice thing you bought for yourself? A new conditioner ig? lol

Can you sew? I can mend a small tear or sew on a button, but it’s been years since I did more than that.

What’s a chore you hate (or a chore you enjoy)? I hate vacuuming so much. So much. Maybe if I had a better vaccuum cleaner I wouldn’t mind it, but I just feel like I’m fighting with the stupid thing, getting caught up on its own cords, caught on furniture, can’t quiiiite reach a spot... HATE IT. I like shoveling snow sometimes, though.

What extracurriculars did/do you do in school? In high school, I played trumpet in band until the band got dissolved from lack of funding. I played soccer one year, was in a play another year. We had an art club for like a semester that I was in. In university the first time round, I did step dancing and intramural hide and seek  Second time around, I was in the linguistics club to help with assignments. (We were very much encouraged to work in pairs or groups for a lot of different classes. The only thing was that you did need to list your group members on the assignment so the prof knew who you worked with. My first morphology class in particular, we had a whole homework club where a huge portion of the class got together to work through assignments and help each other understand, and the prof would quite often show up. </tangent>

Deeper questions:

How’s your quarantine/last few months been? The cabin fever was really bad before the weather warmed up. I struggle with seasonal depression every spring, and it’s gotten much worse since we moved to Edmonton because of how long the winters are. (Snow from September to May/June? Fucccck.) It’s frankly horrifying to look at what’s going on in the US, but even though we have far fewer cases here, I’m really anxious that we’ll see another wave soon. Otherwise, I think I’ve adjusted. Home-schooling, hand-sanitizing, social distancing, masks...All feels kind of normal now, which should maybe concern me.

What do you think of human nature/society/etc.? I am like the least philosophical person you will meet so I don’t think I really have many thoughts.

What’s something you are insecure about? Writing my L2 if a native speaker is gonna read it.

What do you think is the meaning of life/reason that humans exist in the universe? I don’t think there is one, and that doesn’t bother me.

Do you think you’re better (whatever that means to you) than you used to be? Definitely. My adolescence and early adulthood was rough. I was dealing with a lot of trauma, untreated bipolar disorder, and I self-harmed for a very long time. I could not imagine making it to 30, let alone being stable and happy. I actively avoided thinking about the future because it made me spiral. But I was lucky enough to get help, consistent help from a doctor I clicked with, and it made a world of difference. I think younger me would be disappointed at how mundane my life is, but I’m thrilled to be boring because boring means no life-upending mood episodes. I have a happy partnership and two delightful kids and I couldn’t ask for more.

What are your thoughts on religion? I’m not religious and my own experience being raised in the Catholic church was frankly traumatic, but I know that it’s a source of comfort and community for many others and I think that’s awesome for them.

Do you think that there are aliens out there? I think so, although I think that we may not even know what other kinds of life to look for and may not recognize it even if we find it.

What’s something that’s been on your mind recently? We’re moving cross-country in less than a month (driving, no less, nearly 5000 km) and I still have so much to do to get ready aosjdoajdoasijdoaijsd

Fandoms you write for: At the moment, primarily Star Wars (as well as some original stuff), but I’m trying to get back into some of my BSG fic. Apart from those two, my prior main fandoms that I did a lot of writing for were Supernatural, ATLA, and HP, but I’ve done bits and pieces for MCU, miscellaneous crossovers with other things, way back when I did some Dragonlance and LOTR and Wheel of Time...

Where you post: At the moment, mostly AO3 for fanfic stuff. And my writing tumblr.

Most popular one shot: Judging purely by hit count on the stuff that’s been crossposted to AO3 (since that’s easiest to track) - for Star Wars, either The Magic of Midwinter or To his family, send him. Which, incidentally, was the first thing I wrote when I came back to this fandom, lol. Uh. Sanctuary also did pretty well, I think. Most of my SPN fic never got that popular, but some of my ATLA one-shots got a fair number of hits, as well.

Most popular multi-chapter: Precipice, by a wide, wide, wide margin, lol. Uh. Leaving that one outlier aside, Distaff is the next most popular, followed by These Three Remain and then Asajj Ventress and Her Tiny Time-Travelling Conscience. For my non-SW stuff, The Promises of Angels did fairly well for a very long genfic about a tertiary character who (at the time I wrote it) had been dead for five seasons...

Favourite story you wrote: GDI. I hate this kind of question, lol. Uh. I’m still fairly proud of Promises, which I mentioned earlier--at the time, it was the longest contiguous story I’d ever written. Precipice has its ups and downs, but I still love it and have no intention of leaving that AU/timeline anytime soon. The Devoted turned out really well, I thought. Looking back at most of the stuff I have out there, there’s bits I would change, to make things more cohesive/coherent/whatever, but I like what I did with a lot of my stuff. ...also, my AU outlines are a blast, I really should update one of them/write another...

Story you were nervous to post: Lord. Uh. Mostly the more niche/self-indulgent things (or...things that I’m concerned will come across as self-indulgent*?) and/or unusual formats--so, crossposting Ventress to AO3; some of the Jedi of Valdemar bits; the portions of Precipice that deal with Lavinia. It’s Like Deja Vu (All Over Again), too. I was waffling about some of the way chapter 2 plays out. Oh, and Sanctuary, mostly because I don’t hang out in the ST corner of the fandom very much so writing Rey was a little weird for me, but I think it turned out okay?

*Because, while I’ve long since decided to stop feeling guilty/ashamed of such things, I like getting good responses when I share my work??? And I don’t like getting bad ones. So putting that kind of stuff up in a place where it’s intended to reach a wider audience can still be a little nervous-making, if that makes sense.

How do you choose your titles: Oh, all kinds of places. Words that sound cool/feel appropriate, various quotations...I think I did a list on some of my title sources at one point...aha, here it is!

Do you outline: Not..really, no, lol. Like, for Precipice, I sort of have a vague idea of the Major Plot Points that happen in most of the arcs, but I don’t really have it written down anywhere. I had a kind of outline for Heaven on Their Minds, I think; and when I’m working on a Big Bang project or something else with a Deadline, sometimes I’ll have placeholder chapter/scene titles in there? (Like, in The Devoted, there was The Heist(tm), and Obi-Wan and Padme Cannot Ethically Seduce Anakin, and Bail is In Trouble, and Dramatic Confession Scene(tm), etc., but nothing like a Formal Outline. ...come to think of it, I do that with Precipice, too. But not usually very far in advance, just when I’m actually sitting down to organize the next two-three chapters/scenes/plot point/whatever. Oh, I do have kind of an outline for Jedi of Valdemar, mostly because it’s an enormous timeline and I wanted to get the order/relative dating/ages straight. But that’s not super detailed.

Complete: Uhm. Well, in SW, mostly my oneshots. These Three Remain is complete. Deja Vu is technically complete, but I might do a sequel at some point? The Devoted, I have more stories to tell in that universe, though the individual fic itself is complete. The Phoenix I actually do plan to write sequels to, and have them vaguely planned out (The Hercinia will be sort of two parallel storylines, one on the planet and one with Luke and Vader; or possibly three, since the two of them will be mostly split up. The Caladrius will bring everything back together, probably, though I haven’t worked all the details out.)

In progress: Precipice, Distaff, Asajj Ventress and Her Tiny Time-Traveling Conscience; in addition to the probably-continued AU worlds mentioned above, Auxiliaries and Jedi of Valdemar universes (Auxiliaries, at the moment, has only been posted to tumblr, not AO3). Some unposted things, such as our faces like a mirror; a few things in other fandoms (Serenissima, for one; I’m considering rewriting For Sorrow Sung and/or actually getting my notes for The Other Battlestar into some kind of postable fic format, but we’ll see.)

Coming soon: Uh. Well, like I said, our faces like a mirror; I’ll do something for next year’s SWBB; more in various established AUs; probably another AU outline at some point...

@lucks-eterna let me just tell you how HAPPY ECSTATIC I was while reading all of your comments on Infernal. It warms my heart that you enjoyed the story as much as I did writing it. I’ve never laughed so hard while reading fic comments before! I will go ahead and add my comments to your comments here so it's easier.

“I love that everything is just out in the open, no one’s like ‘no one can know my secret’ they’re all like ‘sup i’m a demon” - I was watching LOTR before I started writing this and I loved the idea of Drawfs, Elves, Hobbits, and Man all living together in one world, and everyone knowing about the other “species.” It definitely creates an interesting world and allows me to have more freedom in the characters relationships and interactions.

“Elena already reminds me of Marcie Millar from Hush Hush, was she the inspiration or were you going for generic high school mean girl? Ohh I would love to take a history of celestial beings class that would be way more fun than stats.” - Sort of Marcie Millar but really just your typical mean girl who thinks she's so much better. Also if I were to write a sequel, I wanted more characters to play around with as I knew some wouldn’t make it to the sequel. Also, me too, I’d totally take a class on Celestial Beings.

“Ahh yes, the old falling into the arms of the person you like trope. Truly a classic. Oh no, good things never happen in the wood. Unless they’re gonna make out cuz then I approve. Like I said, nothing good happens in the woods. *heavy breathing* he’s in her bedroom! Shiiiiiiiiiiiip you’re killing me.” - Yes, falling into your future lover's arms is a trope but it was also a way I could get both Marcus and Lucifer into the picture. Woods can be dangerous, but yes its good for make-outs lol. The last part had me cracking up 😂

It reminds me of the Chauncey side story in Hush Hush.” - Thank you, I wanted to not make our “bad-guy...or is he...” have his own story and then later on tie-in. Also, it gave me a chance to keep the story going and not be over so quick. (Both in the timeline and physical length)

“I just want to be friends with all of the gang and go to parties with them.” - Bruh, like me too. I was so jealous when I was writing the Chloe and her gang scenes 😂

I’m excited to see more of Remi, I bet her backstory is super interesting.” - Planes are more interesting and it gave her an opportunity. 😂 Also, I wanted to give John more of a story except for what we know in the show. It’s obvious through Chloe he was a loving, caring and hardworking father/husband. It’s a shame we don’t get to see more of him and Chloe when they were younger. Also, Remi is one of my favorite characters to write!

For me I still have to learn whole English. And I do love French and Spanish a lot. But I never thought about learning them as Language the only other language I tried to learn was Elvish coz lotr and I love elves.

Yes, I’m on a LotR kick lately, (I’m overwhelmingly stressed, my anxiety’s back full force and my depression’s not far behind, and those movies/books are my one surefire way to at least get some temporary relief, so sue me) but can I bring up three things I’ve always deeply admired about the films?

First, the sound design. Yeah, the soundtrack is amazing, but I’m talking about the non-music sounds, specifically the audio cues for when the Ring is tempting someone. There’s a subtle jingle of the chain that cuts through the audio whenever it’s being implied that someone is getting affected by the ring. Sometimes they back it up with deep, ominous music, but other times they don’t. Those times in particular are a lovely bit of design for me because they’ve set it up previously with ominous music, so when they don’t have that being obvious, but still have the established jingle, you get the idea subconsciously and it raises the tension. And it’s not something that’s there constantly, it’s only when they need to show the ring really working at someone. There are plenty of times you can see the chain moving and it should be jingling, but you don’t hear it coming through. Listen for it next time you watch; I believe the first time you hear it is when Frodo trips on the mountain and Boromir picks up the ring on the chain, tho you can hear a similar sound before the chain is introduced whenever the ring is picked up or set down--a sort of tinkling sound, but deeper than the jingle with the chain.

Second, Elijah Wood’s acting, and/or the direction he received. Specifically the fact that after the end of TT (arguably after the middle of TT), anytime Frodo smiles, his eyes are still completely dead. He smiles a lot in Fellowship, and it’s genuine happiness. His whole face lights up, and he’s clearly feeling it. But after Osgiliath, if he smiles (which is rare til near the end), it’s a half smile that looks painfully forced, or else it’s a face-only smile. His eyes aren’t in it. They might crinkle a little, but he’s got a blank stare going on, looking like he’s kind of not-present. In fact, as the movies progress you can watch him go from being expressive, albeit reserved, to completely blank in most of RotK. After they destroy the ring, he gets some expression back, but it’s still muted, and his eyes are dull. I think you can see it most in his eyes when he smiles, because it’s a contrast. He’s just going through the motions, and he may be genuinely feeling happiness, but he’s still touched by that emptiness and hurt. It makes sense, but it’s such a powerful touch that shows what he’s been through has really changed him. He endured more than anyone should have to, and had all the strength, joy, and hope sucked out of him, came home with serious PTSD and (I argue) depression. He’s still haunted by everything, and it colors even the happy moments; it’s a very subtle bit of acting, but very poignant. That, I think, is why him turning around and smiling at the hobbits at the end of RotK is so impactful, because for the first time since early TT, that was a genuine, heartfelt smile, showing he’d finally found peace.

Third, and I touched on this a bit in the second one, the depression-coding for Frodo. Literally everything about this child screams Major Depressive Episode (and it’s all the dang ring’s fault). We see him for who he was before all this nonsense in Fellowship, but after he makes the decision to go on his own, you see more of the visual depression symptoms set in. There are hints in Fellowship; he starts spending more time alone, he is visibly sadder than he was, and his expression is drawn and worried. But this isn’t unusual, given everything he went through and having just lost Gandalf. But come Two Towers, he’s showing more signs. Outbursts of aggression toward friends, mood swings, insomnia at night, excessive daytime sleepiness, loss of appetite, fatigues easily, withdrawing vocally and socially as he quits talking to his social support, expresses feelings of being alone, and he smiles rarely. He starts getting more of a static, blank look on his face that rarely changes, even when he should be expressing strong emotions like panic, fear, or anger--a visual representation of the numbness he is feeling. In Fellowship he cries, screams, laughs, shows his terror, and has a wide range of emotion on his face; starting in TT, that all begins to disappear with only a few exceptions. He also slows down visibly; his speech and movement get slower by a wide margin, which is literally one of the things on a depression screening. All of these things are, but that’s such a specific one that I couldn’t help but notice it. And these symptoms don’t really go away after the ring is destroyed, they just retreat a bit and are more easily masked, but that blank expression and slow speech/movement are still there. This was also seen in the books, and I love that they kept it for the films, because it was one of the things that really connected me with Frodo; I see SO much of my own experiences with MDD in the way Frodo acts and reacts to things, and I don’t think it was accidental, either. But either way, there’s no denying that Frodo exhibits classic symptoms of major depression (as well as PTSD, and that is 100% blatant and obvious especially in the books). I just really appreciate all the work that went into it, and honestly it helps me a lot to have someone I can hardcore relate to and project onto, which is probably why LotR is my go-to when I’m in a down-swing.

Anyway, sorry for all my ramblings lately, it’s just that analysis and these films are both My Jam, and I’m super excited to get to see the Extendeds for the first time soon! (May have to do a liveblog for that, or just a massive reaction after the fact. We’ll see)

6. how did writing change you?

oh shit, this is like a deep question right out of the gate?? i’m not sure, exactly. it’s definitely given me some of the best friends i’ve ever had. i think maybe that’s the best thing about writing, really - realizing how you can connect to people you’ve never met, both in the fic itself and in those friendships outside of it. aw. man. i’m gonna cry lol

12. favorite place to write

my bed! anytime i can wake up abt 7am, get my coffee, and open a word doc without any distractions i know it’s going to be a really productive day. i also wrote, like, the entirety of everything between my second fic and hold on at my friend’s place, often while watching tv. (quiet is only for the very end of a fic where i gotta tie up all those loose strings or let it all unravel)

48. three spoilers for (insert story title) to the end of the night

i’m not sure about spoilers, but i found my old notes doc for this one, so here’s some stuff i had planned for the fic that didn’t make the final cut. 

niall was originally gonna be taking some time off music work to enroll in uni. i was DEADSET - i have no idea why - on him doing this in toronto, or somewhere else northern and cold, but i couldn’t make that location work, which was a pretty good indication i couldn’t make that plot work, either. (at least, not from louis’s pov.)

the dedication at the beginning is to the mother’s we’ve lost. i’ve gotten some real nice comments on it, but it’s really nothing fancy - it’s exactly what it says it is, louis’s mom and mine. i didn’t even know she was ill till halfway thru the fic, but i didn’t have to make any edits to it at all, really, which probably says more about me than it should! it was really nice, though, at least on my end; that dedication at the beginning, and the run-on sentence at the end sort of act like this framing device where the whole fic is louis catching his mum up on everything she’s missed since she passed away. unlike louis, i like middles; i don’t think they ever really end. 

this is just a couple of deleted scenes that kind of capture a mood, but don’t really move the plot in any way: louis accuses niall of lying to him, and “Like you never lied to me,” Niall says, all the more hurtful because he’s not wrong. But that’s not the kind of relationship Louis wants to have with Niall. It hits him out of nowhere, how fucking lonely he’ll be if Niall gets up and walks out right now, how dependent he’s become on Niall’s warm, assuring presence. So of course Louis does his best to get rid of him right away. and, “Fuck,” Louis says, the feeling trapped inside his chest like a lead weight, like a jar of fireflies, like a helium balloon. He closes his eyes, and the image of Niall, sleepy and lax in his bed, the soft sheets slipping over his bare skin, springs forth. “I miss you.” “It’s okay,” Niall says, his voice gravelly with sleep. He means, it’s okay for you to feel like this about me. i never want to articulate feelings explicitly if i can help it for some reason, but i remember thinking of these scenes and going ohh, it’s going to be one of those fics. i really wanted to write a canon compliant fic that delved into louis’s character and looked at the way he coped with losing eleanor and zayn and having freddie all in one fell swoop, but time had just progressed too much. i remember reading that portraying louis as the commitment-phobic one in a relationship just doesn’t make sense, cuz he’s constantly in these big, beautiful romances, but i wanted to write a louis who was older and bitter and really deeply hurt, and i think that’s what these scenes were trying to get at. it’s like darkest timeline!louis. that’s where this monologue comes from that was later fiddled with a bit and mostly put in the final version of the fic: “The truth is,” says Louis, “the truth is, I don’t know that maybe he is better off without me. He can have a normal dad and a normal life and – and that might be better for him, wouldn’t it? And you, I don’t – for God’s sakes, Niall, you told me you’d booked more tour dates the other day and all I could think was can you cancel them so I can keep you a little longer?” Louis shakes his head. “It’s fucked up, and I’m fucked up, and I love you so fucking much. You deserve better.” He puts his hand over his heart like he’s been hurt. Sort of feels like it, to be honest. Now that he’s started talking it’s like he’s an oil station way out in the ocean and all this blackness is just pouring up and out into open water. “My dad, Eleanor, Danielle – even Harry,” says Louis. He draws up short. “Zayn,” he says, barely above a whisper. “Liam. I mean, there’s a fucking pattern there, isn’t there? It’s me, there’s something wrong with me that everyone stops loving me eventually.” “Louis,” Niall says, his voice hushed. “Don’t deny it,” Louis says. “You were there – you saw it happen. I just…can’t love them enough. And I just,” Louis runs out of steam. “I don’t want you to stop loving me.” 

24. favorite scene you’ve ever written

i answered this before, but i really like this scene, too, from to the end of the night: 

They get as far as the back garden – straight through the living room and kitchen – before they lose the plot. Louis kicks one of Freddie’s little play footie balls into the pool and watches it bob along the surface like a fishing lure. He’s aware of Niall watching him from the corner of his eye, same as he’s looking at Niall every time he pretends to look away.

Looking out over Louis’s infinity pool, Niall says, “California,” in his best Terminator accent.

“I hardly ever come out here anymore,” Louis says. He’d had all these plans when he bought the house of playing footie with the lad and floating around on pool loungers and maybe even the occasional water balloon fight, and then he’d just kept saying “tomorrow” till tomorrow’s today, and it’s just him and Niall, silhouetted by the light spilling out of the kitchen windows.

it’s not really a crucial moment or anything, but i felt like it really captured that feeling of life passing you by; that bitterness of knowing you used to have something great, and having lost it, and the way you can want something or someone so bad you don’t even know how to ask for it. (at least, that’s what i hope it says.) 

50. found family - my FAVORITE theme

i have a healthy respect for fate - ‘there is a tide in the affairs of men,’ and all - but a lOT more regard for the bit that contradicts, ‘i have taken these tides of men into my hands and wrote my will across the sky in stars.’ there’s definitely a kind of crossover for me between family and genetics and even learned behaviors and fate, and on the other hand, found family and the parts of ourselves that we choose. 

my dad’s watchwords are ‘but they’re blood,’ as if that settles everything. which it SO doesn’t, at least not to me! a lot of reason for the way i am is because i want to be as unlike my family as possible, and that’s all about choice, really. caving to blood and genetics and stuff i can’t do anything about is like accepting defeat. (there’s a lot of this stuff in oaft, looking back.) but lotr is such a good example of the way you can sort of tie these conflicting values of fate vs. choice together, though, like all those times sam and frodo reflect on how they’d never have accepted the ring quest if they knew what it entailed, and will people tell their stories someday? you don’t often get to know the full extent of what you’ve signed up for, but you do get to choose. so that’s what found family is to me, really - a way of choosing your own fate, accepting the quest you think you can abide. 

i rely a lot on connections between people in my fics, whether it be one acting as another’s human credentials and making them seem lovable at their worst moments, or of tethering them to other people, memories, even parts of the world. i love the way those connections that are made, and not born, can be the most important thing. two of my favorite books, mrs. dalloway and howards end, are built around this idea of “Only connect . . .” where connecting  to people and then connecting them to each other is, like, what life is all about. i like to imagine it looks a bit like portolan charts from back in the day, where maps were made based on the connections between places. some were near and some far, but all tied into the same network, and all tied to each other, albeit with some degree of separation. whenever my directions start getting mixed up, it’s soothing to think of these forged connections making sense of everything.

(so this is basically a transcript of Emily and I’sconversation bc I really don’t know how to make it flow any other way. Also itstarted off as strictly Leon/Nuge and kind morphed to include half the team,but just go with it)

 Nuge is a quite, standoffish guy, whereas Leoncarries a subtle confidence and chooses to take the lead in most of the stepsthey take.

We acknowledge they’re both giant dorks, nomatter how quiet they keep it. (Keep lotr in mind bc that will come into playlater)

After Leon gets up the goods to ask Nuge if hewants to hang out some time, “You know, just the two of us”, Nuge decides toinvite Leon to horseback riding, he has to check on the horses alright.

Leon is a little frightened by the idea and itsnot the ‘giant animal’ part, no, it’s the ‘what if I fall of and breaksomething and can’t play hockey for the rest of the season’ part

After he gets over that and the incredibly snugriding pants, he picks up the whole thing like a champ

And if Nuge is a little flustered its obviouslyover how easily Leon has bonded with the horse and is riding like a natural (imsorry) and certainly not because of those fucking pants

Leon is completely smitten with the way Nugeseems to relax while around the horses. His smile comes easily and he goes alittle soft.

He gets lost in the way Ryan talks about thehorses while he’s brushing them out. How passionate Ryan is about taking careof them. Ryan realizes he’s rambling, so he looks up to find Leon staring athim with this awe and fondness and that soft smile on his face. This is kind ofa lot so Nuge drops his head, flushing, and quirks his mouth and boy if Leon wasn’tgone on dimples before, he is now

Leon kinda freaks out about this feeling in hischest whenever he sees Nuge smile during practice, so naturally he goes to theresident team dads (Lucic, Ference and Maroon) for help. Their advice: startsmall, take him out for lunch.

Meanwhile Ebs catches how often Ryan has beenlooking at Leon and one day during practice has to bump Nuge to move up fordrills. Ryan turns to him and gives him this ‘what’ look, saying that he justzoned out for a second. Ebs smirks and just goes “Yeah, I’ve noticed”. (bc ryanwill never ever be the one to acknowledge his feelings)

Now on to the important part: shovel talk

They each have a take. Ference is here for Leon,his son. While Lucic is protective of Nuge, his liney who he will not hesitateto fight for, and already has. Patty is quite impartial (Connor is his fave,sue him) ((lbr tho they’re all protective of eachother so it doesn’t reallywork out does it))

Connor, the sweet bby Captain he is also has histake on said shovel talk. However, it consists of “I’m really happy for you!!But..” “Don’t ever hurt Leon” and “Please don’t make Ryan sad” “Then everyonewill be sad” “That isn’t cool, that’ll mess with the team dynamic”. Pat walksin on this and proceeds to drag Connor out of the room while Connor has this“do it for me” look in his eye (look cons rly invested in these two, like jesusgo find something else to spend time on) and Pat then promptly tells Nuge andLeon how it’ll be if someone gets hurt and scares the shit out of them.

Ebs also pulls Leon aside one day after practiceand goes “Hey man, just don’t hurt him,” no threats or anything andhonestly that’s the scariest talk bc Ebs could get anyone to do his bidding(it’s the sleepy eyes)

(Queue the part where we talked about connor andhis opinions on pride and prejudice? I don’t even know and also key factor: remember the lotr part?)

They’re both huge nerds and I can guarantee Leonhas the whole lotr series in German and forces Ryan to sit through at least oneand read the subtitles

Speaking of: that’s when they were first kind ofsaw each other as possibilities. One day after practice they’re all gathered inthe dressing room and Ebs is chirping Nuge for making him watch Lotr for themillionth time, “Come on, why can’t I ever choose the movie? We get togetherevery week and I can only hear Smeagol so many times,” queue up the ultimaterom-com moment where all the boys are laughing and then Nuge and Leon decide topipe up and say “Hey! It won 17 oscars!” at the same time (bc yes they’re those people). They both meet eyesacross the dressing room and it’s kind of that ‘Hm’ moment where they hadn’tconsidered it before bc they’ve got hockey to play, they don’t have time tofocus on whether or not they’re attracted to a certain teammate.

(I also need you to acknowledge that Ebs is infact a lotr fan and has dressed up as a hobbit at least three times in his lifefor Halloween)

I feel like Nuge is a very quiet and closedoff person. He doesn’t bring his personal shit to the rink and Leon’s firstreal look at a Ryan that isn’t so focused on hockey all the time is when theygo riding.

Leon’s responsible for breaking down a lot ofRyan’s walls (not that he’s had any issues) just that he’s very private andLeon gets him to open up like a book, not that it doesn’t take a lot of time.

Leon is a giant teddy bear and is ready forcuddles at anytime. Ryan, however, is not a touchy person. Sure, he’ll allowhimself to be held after a tough loss and knows when he needs it to feelbetter, but there’s absolutely no pda.
