Messerschmitt Bf 109
The Messerschmitt Bf 109, also known as the Me 109, was Germany's most important single-seater fighter plane throughout the Second World War (1939-45). Produced in greater numbers than any other German plane, the fighter was a match for the RAF's Supermarine Spitfire in the Battle of Britain and was employed on a range of fronts from North Africa to Russia.

Messerschmitt Bf 109

THE BRUTUAL MULE IS DONE! A 90's style clusterbash of a Revell 109G and the oddly be-nose'd Fujimi 109K4. What a cursed build! Paint crazing, parts falling off, losing parts, and trying new techniques. Tried EasyLine and Mr. Surfacer Black 1500 as a primer. One was easy and the other was line. Fujigrevell Bf-109G10 Frankenstein mule created from Fujimi Wings from their odd looking, snub-nosed K4 and an unloved BF-109G10/R2 from my local hobby shop's missing parts or starts section. The previous owner decided to do his own style of assembling the fuselage with no regard for getting the cockpit or radiator in. Last time I made a Fujigrevell Franken9, I started from step one and made my own path. This kit has fought me at every step. It's done! A 109 Nightfighter!

Harbourne Mackay Stephen was born in Elgin on 18th April 1914.
Harbourne was the son of a bank manager. He was initially educated privately, but then went to schools in Edinburgh and later at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire. He finished his schooling when he was 15-years-old and soon afterwards shifted to London to work in the newspaper industry. His first job was copy boy with Allied Newspapers and later he moved to the advertisement staff of the Evening Standard.
Stephen joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in April 1937 as an and learned to fly. Having achieved the required standard and number of flying hours, Stephen was offered the chance to train with the regular RAF for six months and was given six months leave of absence from his job.
He was offered a full Commission in April 1940 Stephen was posted to 74 Squadron at Hornchurch Over Dunkirk on 24th May he shared in destroying several German aircraft.
Pilot Officer Stephen shot down his first German plane on July 28 1940, and in the next 14 days he shot down 11 more. His score of eight victories in one day came on August 11th when he destroyed three Me109s and two Me110s, probably destroying another and damaging two more. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Flying Spitfires with 605 squadron he took part in the air battles over France and Dunkirk and throughout the thick of the Battle of Britain. He was one of the top scoring R.A.F. pilots at the end of 1940 with 22 and a half air victories
Harbourne Mackay Stephen was the first airman to be awarded a DSO, )Distinguished Service Order)in the field As one of the ''Tigers'' (74 Squadron) he shared the honour of shooting down the 600th aircraft to be destroyed by fighters from a single RAF. After the Battle of Britain, Stephen was posted to Turnhouse , Edinburgh as Chief Flying Instructor; but this was not his idea of active service, and he soon volunteered to go to the Far East in 1942 where he took command of 166 wing, remaining in fighters until the end of the war.
After the war he had a successful career in newspapers where he became managing Director of the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph. He died on 20th August 2001.

1945 04 26 Fighter General - Robert Taylor
On April 26, 1945 Adolf Galland flew his last fighter mission with the rank of General. Leading his famous JV-44 Squadron of Experts, flying the remarkable Messerschmitt Me262 jet fighter, he took off from Munich-Riem and climbed to intercept a Marauder group near Neuburg high above the Danube River. After destroying one and damaging a second, his aircraft was hit by an attacking P-47 Thunderbolt. Galland was injured but managed to outrun the chasing aircraft to crash-land on the Munich airfield. So ended one of the most outstanding war-time flying careers in the history of aviation.Adolf Galland's spectacular career began with the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War in 1937. At the outbreak of World War II he flew in Poland, then France, and the Battle of Britain, taking command of JG-26 in June 1940. When the RAF fighters went on the offensive in early 1941, it was Galland's Me109s that dueled with Douglas Bader's Tangmere Wing in the epic aerial battles over the English Channel. By the end of that year Galland became the youngest general in the German forces, taking over the role of Commander of all day and night fighters. After increasing disagreements with the Luftwaffe supremo, Reichmarshal Hermann Goering, Galland was dismissed, only to have the order countermanded by Hitler, who briefed Galland to take command of the JV-44 jet fighter Wing.Robert Taylor, much admired by Adolf Galland, has painted a superb picture of the General in his Me262, leading JV-44 during the last few weeks of the war during the final defence of Germany. The scene is early April 1945: Having completed a successful bomber interception high above Salzburg, the Me262s are returning towards Munich-Riem at full throttle, hugging the deck to avoid the attentions of USAAF escort fighters. Below the crew of a B-24, brought down in the air-fighting, has survived a dramatic crash-landing amid spectacular surroundings.

How close are the cast of SAS: Rogue Heroes to their real life counterparts? Today we remember possibly the most tragic member of the original L Detachment, Bill Fraser played by the enigmatic Stuart Campbell.
If there is a single SAS member that's been most overlooked in the telling of the story, its the fourth officer Bill Fraser. Bill was born into a family of Gordon Highlanders and himself was a professional soldier throughout the late 30s. After serving with the BEF and being evacuated from Dunkirk, he was commissioned and joined the Commandos, serving alongside Mayne.
He was one of the platoon commanders at the Litani River battle and was severely concussed by a bullet hitting his helmet and had to hand over to his trusted Sergeant, John Cheyne. After recovering in Cyprus, like Mayne, he answered Stirling's call for men to join L Detachment. Due to a broken arm sustained during parachute training, he was absent from the disasterous Op Squatter, but was part of the LRDG party that went to collect them. Cheyne was killed on landing, an unnecessary casualty that must have infuriated Fraser the professional soldier.
Fraser's first jolly was the attack on Agadebia airfield. After laying up for a day to observe the airfield, he and his team stealthily destroyed 37 aircraft and one tractor from a possible 38 Lewes Bombs, the most of any of the raids. After the initial explosions went off, they lit up the airfield and showed another row of brand new ME109s, which Fraser duly returned to destroy. It was such a successful raid that the Italians thought they had been attacked by aircraft.
He received the MC for his leadership and tactical skill. He served with the SAS throughout Sicily and Normandy, injured in each theatre and earning a bar to his MC as well as a Croix de Guerre. After the war when the SAS was disbanded, he returned to the Gordon Highlanders. Sadly he was demoted for being drunk on duty and subsequently left the army. His later life was one of instability and illness, dying at the age of 58 in obscurity.
Fraser's initial raid was the most successful and secured the future of a very uncertain L Detachment.
For those who are curious as to why Fraser was mostly omitted from the records, it is possibly because he was homosexual. It is reported that he was mercilessly bullied by Mayne when he had been drinking, which further adds to the speculation that Mayne himself might have been gay and repressed. It could also be the undignified manner in which he left the military and subsequently dropped off the radar.
