INTERVIEW: DeWolf Stein, Mechant Vaporwave and Eden Veaudry on the art of VJing (EN)
In the spirit of the multidisciplinary nature of our festival, we’re highlighting three video artists who will be projecting image manipulation (or VJing) at 3 different concerts for our 3rd edition of Lux Magna.
We spoke to Louis “Dewolf” Stein (Jan. 23rd at Casa), Chachi Revah a.k.a. Mechant Vaporwave (Jan. 25th at Casa) and Eden Veaudry (Jan. 25th at La Vitrola) about their process and what their art brings to an event.
When did you first begin VJing?
Eden: I started making videos in 2009, just for fun. They were (and still are) diaristic in nature.
Dewolf: The first time I was introduced to VJing was when June Barry (Boycott) decided to plug in her computer half way through our set with Busty and the Bass at La Grosse Lanterne Festival. Without being able to fully see what was going on behind me, I immediately felt our music recontextualized and our show became an experience. Up until that point, live music was purely an aural experience. June and I chatted after the show and I was eager to know exactly what she was doing and how she does. It felt very important to explore this world. She invited me to Moonshine where I saw her wizardry on full display; one projector with an 80ft canvas of abstract black and white imagery set to some of the most amazing music I had heard to date. Moonshine was my first true introduction to visual art and my first inspiration. 1 year later I began assisting Boycott with her installations and soon began VJing my own content regularly.
Mechant Vaporwave: I was first conjured by BackxWash in the summer of 2019.
2. Where do you draw inspiration from?
Dewolf: As a child I remember drawing shapes and getting frustrated when I couldn’t color them perfectly. I really wanted a certain perfection that I felt I couldn’t create with my hands. In making graphics on the computer, that is obviously way easier and has allowed me to move past that frustration and allowed me to think more deeply about thematic imagery and meaning. My biggest inspiration is Boycott. She is an absolute boss, a true visionary who can create such strong, organic, human yet supernatural things using her computer and her hands. It’s unbelievable. Myself I find myself drawn to circles and textures and various ways to abstractly represent human existence and show a cathartic breaking free of those walls and boundaries.
Mechant Vaporwave: I am inspired by sounds, vulnerable storytelling, and my ancestors. I use both digital and analogue techniques and am drawn to grunge and hardvapour aesthetics. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to translate audio experiences to visual ones.
Eden: I am inspired by what I see around me.

3. What is the importance of video art at a show?
Mechant Vaporwave: Video art at a show can transport the audience into another realm. It can foster empathy and connection while encouraging a release of social inhibitions.
Eden: It's a delicate balance - if the music and visuals are compatible they can take the audience on a journey, but if not, the effect can be irritating.
Dewolf: Visuals are a choice. Video art is not always an appropriate tool and is just one visual tool/choice. Having one lightbulb is a choice. Have a massive LED wall is a choice. Have a 3 lazers is a choice. Wearing all white and one person wearing red is a choice. All choices are equally valid if made consciously and with intention. People are drawn to light and screens, especially these days. When you have a video screen, it really grabs people’s attention. They become transfixed and you can very quickly capture their attention. However, there’s great power in that. You can lead people into an abstract world of boundless unity but you have to be attentive and responsible to match the music and the vibe of the room. It’s very easy to turn people off by boring them or overstimulating, just like with music. It’s a responsibility that I look forward to with great joy.
You can see these artists work their magic at:
Jan. 23: Florafone: Community Garden | A live recording (Casa del Popolo)
Jan. 25: Backxwash • BiG SiSSY • blackberryjam (Casa del Popolo)
Jan. 25: YlangYlang (Album Launch) • Così e Così • Desert Bloom (La Vitrola)
