Favorite place in the world you’ve visited?
Guadeloupe! (It’s a tiny French island in the Caribbean.) It’s warm and beautiful, and that’s the place that made me appreciate the beauty of hiking, even though I never did manage to get into it after that x)
It’s also where part of my family is from so that helps too :D
Something you’re proud of yourself for?
I’m really proud of how much I’ve grown as a person these past few years. I’m proud of the fact that I’m still standing even though it sometimes felt like I wouldn’t be able to.
Also I’m proud of my writing to be honest. I think that’s the most solid ‘I’m good at this’ part of my life and it was the cornerstone of me building any kind of self esteem. I hope I get even better as time goes by :D
Favorite books?
I think the Hunger Games books are the ones I reread the most often (sidebar: I absolutely recommend you read Spin Control by Trovia in this fandom. It’s still pretty high on my ‘Introducing people to quality fanfic’ list!)
That being said, Pride and Prejudice is also a big favorite! A lot of my favorite stories are fanfics, though, it’s my favorite medium x)
Something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?
My cats, my goddaughter, my niece, my friends 😊
Favorite thing about your culture?
The fact that we’re used to pushing back against authority (make fun of the French all you want for striking all the time, we sure do it a lot and even too much at times, but sometimes it’s useful to have a coworker who’s not afraid to be frank xD)
Also: how affordable books are! I miss paying only 5-10 euros for pocket-format paperbacks, especially when I can’t find anything under 13 dollars here ;_;
When did you join the HBO War fandom? What was the first show you watched?
Last year, and late in the year at that! Although whether I’ve really joined the fandom is debatable, given how bad I am at socializing, but I’ve definitely written fic xD
What can I say, I watched this show twice before I caught the fic/shipping bug for it! Now I’m trying to decide whether I can actually watch The Pacific without damaging my mental health because I am not a gore fan xD
Have you read any of Easy Company’s books? If so, which ones were your favorite?
None so far, though I’m still looking around for Bill Guarnere and Babe Heffron’s book…and I’d like to get my hands on David Webster’s book as well, if I can. Not that the others aren’t interesting to me, but I’d say these are the two at the top of my list.
Favorite HBO War character and your favorite moment with them?
To my own surprise, I had a hard time deciding between Webster, Guarnere and Liebgott for this one! But I think David is the one that rotates the most in my mind, and I do absolutely love his whole “Can you believe I said that?” bullshit when he gets shot like, man what are your priorities xD
Do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?
Well, I’m coming up on a million words of fanfiction published on AO3, the most recent works being largely Band of Brothers fic, but I also occasionally fiddle on Canva to make fic covers!
Favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?
I think I still have to answer Tom Hiddleston, and Thor (the first one).
Favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?
I do love Mika’s lyrics in Rio: “Maybe I’ll be myself when I’m somebody else.”
It really resonates with me, and if I’m going to tattoo any words on my body it’ll be those.
Random fact your mutuals/followers don’t know about you?
When I go cross eyed I can make it look like my eyes move independently like a chameleon’s.
If you’re a writer, do you need a beta reader (say yes so I can be your beta reader 🤭)?
Beta reader, cheerleader, whichever you prefer! I have too many fics on the backburner tbh! Right now I’m trying to wrestle the one where modern AU!Don Malarkey and David Webster met on Grindr, disliked each other too much to actually sleep together, but accidentally become ride or die friends anyway x)
Three things that make you smile?
I’m going to count my cats as only one thing, even though there’s three of them :P
Whenever my students compliment me.
The smell of rain on a hot road or warm grass.
And, because I can: swimming in a river/lake it hot weather.
Any nicknames you like?
I would describe myself as largely indifferent to nicknames on the whole? I’m fine with Matt tbh, I picked it myself and it’s only one syllable so it works x)
I do have two people who refer to me by a (different) nickname though, and I would feel very strange if they stopped ;_;
List some people you love to see around on tumblr!
Well, @almost-a-class-act, who tagged me, is a pretty nice presence :D I'm also always happy to see posts from @formerlyknownas-delight, @liesmyth (enjoying the Italian blogging at the moment even if I don't understand most of it), @lectorel, @nemainofthewater and @talysalankil
Lately, I've also really enjoyed the works of @renegadepublishing, @fuckyeahgoodomens and @atlaculture
What would you do during a zombie apocalypse?
Freeze and try to be as quiet as possible? Probably slowly kill myself with stress over my cats’ wellbeing.
Favorite movie?
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but also The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.
Do you like horror movies?
No D:
Tag list: @ronsparky @cinnamonmalarkey @1waveshortofashipwreck and whoever else wants to do this :D

Exotic and endangered birds
All screenshots and bird info from: https://www.ifaw.org/uk/journal/18-most-endangered-birds
Tumblr media
Why is the yellow-crested cockatoo endangered? The yellow-crested cockatoo, a medium sized white parrot native to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, is critically endangered. There are an estimated 1200-2000 individuals remaining in the wild, and their population is sadly still decreasing. The yellow-crested cockatoo’s decline is primarily due to cage-bird trade and trafficking, which effectively became illegal in 1994 after being included in Appendix I of CITES; however, illegal trapping of these birds continues in many areas. Because they breed in large tree hollows, logging and agriculture also indirectly threaten their survival.
Tumblr media
Are Amazon parrots endangered? Out of 36 species of Amazon parrots assessed by the IUCN, five are endangered and four are critically endangered, namely the imperial Amazon, lilacine Amazon, Puerto Rican Amazon, and yellow-naped Amazon. Two species have gone extinct—the Guadeloupe Amazon and the Martinique Amazon.
Tumblr media
What is a nuthatch? Nuthatches are a genus of birds with large heads, short tails, and strong, pointed beaks. Most species are blue-grey with black eyebrows. Bahama nuthatches have brown heads and white underbellies.
Tumblr media
What is the mangrove finch? The mangrove finch is a species in Darwin’s finch group, part of the tanager family, with dull brown, olive-toned, and white plumage. It’s native to the Galápagos.
Tumblr media
What is a bunting? Buntings are a family of passerine (perching) birds from Europe, Asia, and Africa. Related to finches, they eat seeds and are commonly recognised by their typically brown, streaked feathers and bold markings on their heads.
Tumblr media
What is the New Zealand storm petrel? Native to the waters between New Zealand’s North Island and eastern Australia, the New Zealand storm petrel is a small seabird. Similar to the more common Wilson’s storm petrel, it has a black head, wings, and tail and a bright white stripe around its back. This bird only comes to land to breed and spends the rest of its life at sea.
There are a lot more birds and information on the website i listed and it makes me really upset that so many birds have gotten to this point of near extinction and a lot of it is because of humans. deforestation leads to birds loss of habitat. even environmental factors, if a species environment is no longer a liveable space for that animal a person could make the point that if an animal cant live in the place they live in then its the animals 'fault' for not adapting to their environment, but due to humans effect on the planet a lot of the time that changes the environment to quickly for the species to keep up.
i wanted to make my world somewhat realistic so i wanted to have a look at endangered birds to find one i could use as the one that 'bird man' is protecting but after looking through the pictures and info i have decided to change him up a bit, he's not just protecting one bird, he's protecting as many endangered birds on his giant ship as he can. i think that would be a lot mor interesting and fit his character better, as he's meant to be a strong but kind man.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
For my major two project, I intend to continue exploring and expanding my interest and knowledge regarding my role as a white filmmaker and how we go about talking about racism and colonial structures in our society today.
As this has been a personal experience and progress working on this matter at uni, I want to use my journey in relation to matters I think stand out from my own experience. The ways in which we, in the Western world, have classified people and countries as either the right or wrong way of living. The prejudices that come from that and how we move forward from that. Ariella Aisha Azoulay describes in her book, Potential History: Unlearning Imperialism, that we cannot unlearn using imperialist tools. I ask, why are we still asking “where do you really come from?” and “you should go back to where you come from?”. Franz Fanon says, “O my body, make of me always a man who questions” turning what Descartes said “I think, therefore I am.”
I want to progress from previous projects and feedback and therefore I think it is important to collaborate with someone who has experienced the matters I am talking about. As a white person, one thing you will know, that no matter how much research you do, you will never fully understand what it is to be black. My friends have been a big part of my further understanding on this matter. It has opened my eyes to things I never thought of or unconsciously have done. Therefore, I am going to invite those conversations, we have had, into this project, as I do believe conversations are key. Why are we so afraid to talk about racism? I am planning to talk to my friend who is from Guadeloupe (old french colony) which story relates quite well with Fanon coming to France, and my friend who was born and raised in England but his parents are from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and my friend who is Maori, native from New Zealand.
Visually, I would like to move away from working only digitally (animations) and do some actual filming as I do want to show all aspects of me as an artist. I would like to use film as the medium because, initially, that is what I am mostly passionate about when it comes to technique and visual consideration. I would like to do 16 mm black and white and to do animations scratching into the film. However, I do wonder, as the technology behind the development of analog was based on white skin and has a history of being very racist, if it is inappropriate to use this medium for the project. I am thinking of experimenting with a multi screen installation for the set up.
My projects rely heavily on the research process as well but I do think I have built a quite strong foundation for me to explore these matters. I will continue on reading and doing my research on different theories but I feel ready to experiment with the visuals which also do challenge me as I am a bit uptight when it comes to making decisions without knowing how it relates to the subject or how it is going to look like.

Honey Fig and Dried Fruit Rum Baba
Tumblr media
Our New Year’s Day lunch ended gloriously, with this beautifully risen, perfectly soaked Honey Fig and Dried Fruit Rum Baba, crowned with drunk dried fruit and honey gazed figs; a delicious start to 2023!!! I wish you all a very Happy New Year!!
Ingredients (makes 1):
1/2 cup soft dried apricots
1/4 cup sultanas
1/4 cup almonds
1 cup good white rum (like Guadeloupe’s Damoiseau)
220 grams/8 ounces strong white flour
50 grams/1.75 ounce caster sugar
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
½ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
¼ cup milk
100 grams/ 3.5 ounces unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/4 cup caster sugar
2 heaped tablespoons pure local honey
1 cup water
½ cup double cream
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
6 or 7 fresh figs, rinsed
1 heaped teaspoon pure local honey
The day before, chop dried apricots. Combine, in a medium bowl, with sultanas and almonds. Pour white rum over dried fruits and cover wit cling film. Let infuse overnight.
In a large bowl, combine strong white flour, caster sugar, yeast and salt, making sure you don’t put the salt on top of the yeast, as it might kill it. Give a good stir; set aside.
In a smaller bowl, whisk the eggs and the milk together until well-blended.
With a wooden spoon, gradually stir egg mixture into flour mixture, until a soft, sticky dough forms. Tip dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead, a good 10 minutes, until dough becomes smoother. Then, gradually knead in softened butter, until you have an elastic, shiny dough. Return to the bowl, and cover with a tea towel. Prove, one hour, or until doubled in size.
Generously butter a 20cm/8” baba tin.
Once proved, knock back the air, and spoon dough into a piping bag. Pipe dough prepared tin. Prove again, until doubled in size.
Preheat oven to 180°C/355°F.
Once the baba has risen, place in the middle of the warm oven, and bake, 25 to 30 minutes at 180°C/355°F, until a nice golden brown colour.
Drain rum-soaked, plumped-up dried fruit in a fine mesh sieve. Keep the fruit for later.
Whilst baba is baking, combine demerara sugar, honey, 3/4 of the dried-fruit-infused rum and water in a large saucepan, and heat over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar and honey have completely dissolved. Boil rapidly, a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in remaining dried-fruit-infused rum. Cover with a lid.
When the baba is baked, remove from the oven, and let cool, 15 minutes, before gently releasing from the tin. Then, carefully soak the sponge in the warm rum syrup, gently turning it to soak evenly. Gently lift out of the saucepan, and transfer to serving plate; set aside. Keep about a couple of tablespoons of the dried fruit rum syrup.
Let rum-soaked sponge cool at room temperature.
Drizzle reserved rum-soaked dried fruit with two tablespoons of the remaining rum syrup, to coat and glaze.
In a medium bowl, beat double cream with an electric beater until soft peaks form. Add four tablespoons cooled rum syrup, and continue beating until stiff peaks just form. Gently fold in three-quarters of the rum-soaked dried fruit. Set aside.
Melt butter in a small frying pan. Halve figs. Add to the butter when it is just foaming, and sauté, a couple of minutes. Drizzle with honey, and cook, a few minutes more until just glazed.
To serve, spoon Rum-soaked dried fruit whipped cream  in the centre of cooled baba. Garnish with honey fig halves and remaining rum-soaked dried fruits.
Enjoy Honey Fig and Dried Fruit Rum Baba immediately.

Bread Pudding
Tumblr media
When Jules and I were little, our Mum would often take us to the bakery after school, where we’d buy cakes or coissants for our goûter, the French pendant for afternoon tea. There would often be Religieuses or Chocolate Eclairs, Croissants and Brioche. But also, whenever my sister opted for a generous slice of flan pâtissier, I would have one of (bread) pudding (for I never was too keen on crème pat!) I loved the concoction of milk-soaked bread, with vanilla, sometimes swirled in with a little chocolate, much, much better! I have made a few bread and butter puddings, the English cousin to this childhood treat, which is sliced and served like a cake, but never the treat itself. Until I found my Mum’s recipe (actually, her friend Marylin’s nan’s), handwritten in her much-used recipe book, and we so happened to have (as we often do), heaps of bread to use up. This delicious Bread Pudding, with its crisp top, and its soft, delicately sweet middle, is a delight, really as scrumptious as I remembered it! And you can have it at tea or for dessert. Happy Thursday!
Ingredients (serves 4 to 6):
1/4 cup sultanas
1/4 cup good quality white rum (like Guadeloupe’s Damoiseau)
2 cups semi-skimmed milk
1 plump vanilla bean
170 grams/6 ounces stale Sourdough Bread and/or Baguette
1/3 cup caster sugar
3 eggs
1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter
Spoon sultanas into a small bowl. Cover with white rum, and allow to soak, several hours (at least a couple.)
Pour milk in a medium saucepan.
Halve vanilla bean and scrape its seeds off. Add vanilla seeds and empty pod to the milk, and heat over a low flame.
Tear Bread and Baguette into large chunks into a large bowl. Sprinkle generously with caster sugar.
Once the milk is just simmering, pour over the Bread and Baguette chunks, discarding empty pod. Give a good stir with a wooden spoon, to combine. Cover with a tea towel and allow to rest, 15 to 20 minutes.
Preheat oven to 180°C/355°F. Generously butter a pie plate.
Once the Bread and Baguette have soaked up most of the milk, and the mixture has cooled, break in the eggs, and mix well. Stir in reserved sultanas and their rum.
Gently spoon mixture into prepared pie plate, levelling with the back of the wooden spoon. Scatter small chunks of butter liberally on top. Place in the middle of the warm oven, and bake, at 180°C/355°F, 1 hour and a quarter to 1 hour and a half, until nicely golden brown on top.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
Serve Bread Pudding warm or cooled.

One fact please, fun is preferable, piping hot off the griddle with a medium soft drink
Coming right up!
I have recently finished reading The Black Count by Tom Reiss which is about Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, father of novelist Alexandre Dumas, who was an absolute BEAST in the French army during the French Revolution so now I'm thinking about that time period so here we go. Today You Learned about Chevalier Saint-Georges, the man who was once, in his lifetime, considered the finest swordsman in all of Europe:
Tumblr media
As Tom Reiss puts it:
"....every white champion had stepped up to try to beat Saint-Georges; except for one Italian, who fought him under exceptional circumstances, they all failed."
His father was a wealthy white man in Guadeloupe (French colony) and his mother a black woman. He was enrolled in a school in France when he was thirteen and IMMEDIATELY wowed everyone with how awesome his fencing skillz were. And he wasn't bad with shooting and horseback riding either.
Someone insulted his race, and he dueled this stupid dude, winning enough attention that he was given the title 'chevalier' or 'knight' and made honorary member of the king's guard. And then... he took up music? Not just playing music, although he was apparently very good at the violin too, but composition. Queen Marie Antoinette apparently hated all French music (she was Austrian), but she considered Saint-Georges to be the only French composer she liked and personally acted as his patron.
That being said, despite being the Queen's favorite, he STILL had to deal with racist BS. He was nominated to be in charge of the Royal Academy of Music and director of the Paris Opera, and apparently three of the singers from the opera sent a letter to the Queen refusing to work under him on the grounds that he was a mixed race man, and therefore it was an insult.
Which is a pretty bold thing to say about a guy, who according to John Adams in 1779 was "the most accomplished man in Europe in riding, shooting, fencing, dancing, music. He will hit a button on the coat or waistcoat of the masters. He will hit a crown piece in the air with a pistol ball."
In the French Revolution he was put in charge of a legion of black soldiers which came to be known as the Legion de Saint-Georges. Having taught Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, he immediately asked for him to be in his unit, especially since Dumas was pretty famous at this point. There was a bidding war over who got Dumas, but Saint-Georges gave him a higher rank so he went with him.
Also apparently the man held concerts while in the army?
There was, however, a point during the Revolution in which Saint-Georges disappeared (he apparently did this frequently as an officer) but when he came back was accused of being a horse hustler? Of buying good horses with his official funds, and then selling them? And buying his men crappy horses instead? And he passed the buck to Dumas, saying it was all his fault?
Not cool dude. Not. Cool.
There's some confusion as to what happened next, because Dumas's son, the novelist, has an account of how they settled their differences after a court case, but Reiss points out that we have no records of Dumas going to court over this, so, uh... okay.
STILL! The man was the first (on record, anyway) black classical composer, and I think, with Black History Month coming up, it's important to remember that the man who was widely thought of as the best swordsman in Europe was a black man.
Also Badass of the Week has an article on him.
