Homeschooling Tips from an Experienced Multi-Tasking Mama
Our nation and local Treasure Valley community continue to face the unimaginable impact of Covid-19 and the resulting changes to all of our lives. We recently asked TSG Boise members to share the ways they’ve adjusted and are adapting through our #stayconnectedBOISE campaign. While the reality of homeschooling children is quite the adjustment to many right now, Volume 3 Member Anna Logan (Owner and Designer behind Flying China Tableware + Decor Rental), has over four years of experience. Below she generously shares her tips on how she manages to juggle a small business and day-to-day life all while homeschooling her two young children.
Tumblr media
1. WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT
Most stores are closed, but we still have Winco and Home Depot! Cooking and gardening are great tools to work with math and science. This week we planted seeds and measured and divided our garden boxes into sections. We also made rice krispy treats and cookies and dropped them off on our neighbors’ doorsteps. Cooking and yard work involve fractions, measuring, following directions, and working as a team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. INVOLVE YOUR KIDS IN ONE OF YOUR HOBBIES OR SKILLS
I’m using this week to teach my nine and seven-year-old to use the washing machine and dryer. My husband builds motorcycles as a hobby and taught the kids how to rebuild the front forks on a dirt bike (he’s a lot more exciting than I am). But what do those things have to do with academics? In doing the laundry, my kids and I had conversations about temperature, cause and effect, and color mixing. In rebuilding the dirt bike, my husband talked about physics, the metric system, and the application of leverage. Whatever you are doing, there is always a way to connect it to meaningful ideas and experiences.
Tumblr media
3. KEEP IT MINIMAL
Do not even try and replicate a public school day. As schools begin to supply work, keep your intentional homeschool time to two or three hours per day at most (junior high and high school students will need more time depending on the type of classes they have). Minimizing burnout is more important than getting all the worksheets done. Believe me.
As we’re all sheltering in place, my biggest encouragement is for you to invite your kids into your daily life. Whatever you like to do (or have to do), have your children do it with you. It will take longer, but you will feel a huge connection with your kids. What they learn from you is invaluable and can’t be taught in school!
- ANNA LOGAN

Entryway Solutions w/ SOI BOI Design
Ever find yourself stuck with what to do in a challenging space like an entryway? It’s the first thing people notice when visiting your home, but often the most limited when it comes to space. Below, SOI BOI Design Team Shay O’Connor and Rita Howerton give us 3 fool-proof tips on how to make an impact in your entry.
SOI BOI Tip #1
1) Mirrors can be your best friend in tight spaces and are a great way to trick the eye. A well-placed mirror can give the illusion of more square feet, height and even light. The key is to find an element that the mirror can reflect in that tight space (for example, we utilized the oversized prints from the adjacent wall in this particular space).
Tumblr media
SOI BOI Tip #2
Speaking of, don't shy away from incorporating oversized images or frames to make an impact. These additions can become a defining element in a small space and often bring together an overall design or color scheme. Now it goes without saying, if you're going BIG make sure you love it. This central piece really can set the tone for your entire space.
Tumblr media
SOI BOI Tip #3
Texture texture texture (we love natural greenery, woven elements, and mixed metal finishes). These final touches in a small space can really bring everything together and make the space feel lived in.

Transaction Tips with Murphy Business Sales
At TSG Boise our focus has always been to serve as small business advocates, supporting members as they navigate owning and operating their own business. For some owners, the conversation can eventually lead to selling their business. We sat down with our very own team of experts at Murphy Business Sales Boise (TSG Vol1/Vol2/Vol3 members) to discuss the process and the benefits of aligning with the right brokerage firm capable of coordinating all phases of a business transfer.
Tumblr media
MURPHY BUSINESS SALES BOISE || Rodney R. Wolfe, Darrell Gustaveson, Sheila Spangler, Larry Halvorson, David Choate
The sale of any business, large or small, typically requires a team of at least 4 different business professionals (CPA/Accountant, Legal Professional, Investment Banker, Appraiser). This fact alone prevents a lot of business owners from even beginning the process. That is where Murphy Business Sales comes in. Aligning with a brokerage provides a seller with an expertly positioned and experienced intermediary capable of coordinating every step of the process.
Below, they’ve shared the 7 critical points any business owner should know before selling in order to achieve a successful, trouble-free transaction.
1. Validating a Realistic Sales Price
Fair market value pricing is essential to the successful sale of a business. Brokerage firms ensure access to various industry professionals with extensive knowledge and the experience to accurately place a value on the business.
2. Current Knowledge of the Marketplace
Brokerage intermediaries surround themselves with databases, search tools, industry reports and business contacts available only to them. Keeping up-to-date with current marketplace conditions is essential to determining the right time to place a business on the market.
3. Confidentiality is Essential
There are many issues that can affect the sales and profitability of the business if it’s introduced to the market prematurely. Customers, competitors, employees, vendors and creditors will have different reactions to finding out that your business is for sale. Confidentiality is critical and vital at all stages of the selling process, and is held in strict confidence by the brokerage intermediary.
4. Expertise in Attracting and Securing Serious, Potential Buyers
Considering there a various types of buyers, intermediaries use effective and efficient search procedures to find and screen those that are best qualified to purchase a business, saving the business owner endless hours of screening.
5. Pre-Arrange Lender Financing
The chances of a sale increase dramatically when securing a lender’s “Pre-Approval” of terms and sale price while actively marketing for a buyer.
6. Untangle Red Tape
A intermediary is an expert at alleviating potential pitfalls that can arise with permits, licenses, financing, agreements, leases, etc. where a business owner may not have the foresight or experience in these matters regarding selling a business.
7. Expert Negotiator
Steeped in knowledge about negotiating price and terms, the intermediary acts as the middle man and works to achieve ideal strategic and tactical financial goals without compromising the sellers position.

Augusto Fine Rugs + Lorelle Rau Landscape Foothill Collaboration
At The Scout Guide we often talk about the importance of remaining curious, seeking inspiration and being open to discovery within our own community. For the past two years we've watched a collaboration rooted in this belief unfold between TSG Boise members Anna Augusto and Lorelle Rau.
Tumblr media
Anna is the owner of Augusto Fine Rugs, a full service area rug design studio and showroom specializing in luxury carpets, rugs and custom specifications. With more than a decade of concentrated work in the area rug business, Anna works diligently to provide her clientele with rugs sourced from the most respected artisans across the globe.
Lorelle is a contemporary collage artist, who uses cut paper and appropriated imagery to investigate concepts of nature and place. In her landscape series, Lorelle expresses the transformative qualities of nature, particularly the rich contours and textures of the mountains. As an avid hiker and camper, the experience and rawness of the natural world has always been an integral part of her creative process.
Anna and Lorelle first met at the TSG Boise Volume 1 launch party in March of 2018. The concept of bridging Anna’s incredible eye and custom rug expertise with Lorelle’s artistic talent unfolded as they shared their mutual affinity for the landscape surrounding Boise. After a number of brainstorming sessions at Augusto Fine Rugs, Anna and Lorelle’s creative process fully took shape when they set out on a hiking adventure together.
Tumblr media
They started out on the easily-accessible Ridge to Rivers Trail System, hiking Sweet Connie Trail off of Bogus Basin Road. Throughout the afternoon they trekked several miles, gathering inspiration and source material through photography. Back in the studio, the two of them assessed their photographs and determined which textures and compositions would translate best into a rug. Lorelle created multiple cut paper collages which she translated into a simple, black and white line drawing using Adobe Photoshop. Once the line drawing was in hand, they met back at Anna's showroom and explored some of the rich fibers, textures, piles, and knots that were obtainable for the project. Next, they converted the drawing into a rug design software program, specifying every color and detail, considering fiber contents and knotting techniques in order to achieve the desired texture.
Tumblr media
Final Rug Rendering shown with Landscape Collage
Once the final design was completed, Anna sent it off to be fabricated by skilled artisans at a weaving facility in Nepal. The final result is a stunning 4’ x 6’ work of art composed of sheep’s wool, undyed yak wool, and hemp.

The finished product beautifully depicts the foothills and high desert landscape that frames our city. This piece will be on display and generously donated by Anna and Lorelle as an auction item at the 2020 Boise Art Museum Gala, held on March 7th.

3 HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS WINTER SOUP RECIPES
Tumblr media
This post originally appeared on The Scout Guide’s blog here.
Short days and chilly temperatures call for simple, warming suppers. Enter: soup, a dish that’s practically synonymous with winter. Eager to add a few go-to options to our repertoire, we reached out to Victoria Dodge, who with her husband, Tamal, founded the Los Angeles, California, and Wilmington, North Carolina-based Yoga Salt studios, and coauthored The Yoga Plate, a collection of more than 100 simple and nourishing vegan recipes. Here, Dodge shares three delicious and satisfying one-pot dishes that will carry you through the cooler months and well into spring.
COZY WINTER WHITE BEAN SOUP
“Full of nutrients and loaded with protein, this soup will warm your heart and nourish your body on a cold winter day,” says Dodge of this delicious, hearty dish.
Serves 6 to 8
INGREDIENTS:
2 cans white beans
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 stalks celery, diced
2 medium potatoes, diced
2 large carrots, diced
1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped
6 cups vegetable broth
1 cup water
1 teaspoon sea salt
Pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a large soup pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion, celery, and garlic and cook until tender. Add the beans, potatoes, carrots, parsley, salt, and 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for about one hour, adding more water as necessary. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Tumblr media
GREEN SOUP
“This warm, savory soup is light, but packed with lots of vitamins and minerals and loads of fiber,” Dodge says of this bright and flavorful green soup. “It takes only 30 minutes to prepare, so it’s great when you are in a pinch but want something satisfying.”
Serves 6 to 8
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon grapeseed oil
1 cup onion, coarsely chopped
2 cups celery, coarsely chopped
4 cups broccoli
1 medium size zucchini, coarsely chopped
2 cups baby spinach
4 cups water
1 tablespoon sea salt
Pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS:
Heat one tablespoon of grapeseed oil in a large soup pot. Add the chopped onion and celery and sauté until slightly tender. Add the broccoli, zucchini, water, and salt, and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer until all the vegetables are soft but not overcooked (they should still be vibrant green). Turn the heat off.
In a high-speed blender, scoop out half of the soup mixture and blend until smooth. Pour into a separate bowl. Blend the remaining soup, and then pour all blended soup back into the soup pot and heat to desired temperature and serve.
Note: This recipe can be adapted to include different vegetables—Dodge sometimes uses 2 cups cauliflower and 2 cups broccoli, or kale or chard instead of spinach.
Tumblr media
BOMBAY RED LENTIL SOUP
“The beauty of this dahl is that it is simple, and only takes about 30 minutes to make. The aroma from all the spices will warm your house and make you feel like you are in India,” Dodge says. “Plus, it’s filled with fiber and protein, and there are antioxidant elements and immune-boosting ingredients as well.”
Serves 6 to 8
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 cup onion, diced
1 glove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon cumin
2 teaspoons salt, plus one pinch
1/8 teaspoon cayenne (optional)
1 cup red lentils, washed and sifted
1 carrot, diced
4 cups vegetable broth
2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 cups spinach
1/2 cup diced tomatoes
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, torn
1/4 cup scallions, diced
Heat the coconut oil in a large soup pot on medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, turmeric, cumin, a pinch of salt, and cayenne (optional, for those who like a little heat), and sauté until the spices are blended in and the onion becomes tender. Next, add the lentils, carrot, vegetable broth, water, two teaspoons of salt, and pepper, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer uncovered for about 20-30 minutes, or until the lentils fall apart. Add the lemon juice, spinach, and tomatoes just before serving. When the spinach is wilted, stir all ingredients together before ladling into bowls. Top with cilantro and scallions.

Creating a Unique Holiday Tablescape with Maison Blue
Tumblr media
With Christmas around the corner we turned to our friends at Maison Blue for some expert advice on creating a beautiful holiday table sure to welcome and wow guests during this festive season. Below, owners Alexandra and Rhonda outline 6 suggestions for filling the table with unique specialty items as well as pieces that may already be found in your home.
1. Layer layer layer
Nothing creates a cozy environment quite like layers of luxe linens. This is a great way to pull from what you already have at home while adding a few new fresh pieces season after season. Below, we layered a linen runner alongside ruffled stripe placemats and a gathered napkin with substantial ring holders. All of these textures play nicely with the finish of your table to soften things up while adding visual interest.
Tumblr media
2. Decorate each place setting
While plates certainly serve as a functional element at mealtime, they also create a lovely space to display festive pieces prior to eating (like the actual holiday ornaments layered below). The wreaths add rich color and the stag ornament is a bold and eye-catching addition. (A thoughtful option is for each ornament to serve as the gift guests take home with them at the end of the evening)!
Tumblr media
3. Hidden treats
Speaking of spoiling guests, another festive addition to the table is using something unexpected to hold sweet bites across the table. For example, the sleigh works perfectly filled with chocolates, but you could also use a vintage sugar bowl or even a gravy boat filled with mints (or more chocolate)!
Tumblr media
4. Be creative
As we've referenced above, unexpected elements can be fabulous conversation starters at a holiday table (and we're pretty obsessed with these festive little pewter salt and pepper shakers)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Add height to the tablescape
We love the added visual interest that varying levels of height bring to a table. Below, we incorporated vintage candle holders with various candle heights along with festive trees to really give the table a wow factor. It's always wise to keep guests line of vision in mind, especially for seats directly across from one another.
Tumblr media
6. Personalize with place cards
The addition of place cards not only helps direct your guests it also provides another opportunity to add a bit of visual interest at each place setting. Consider everyday items to hold the card (ex. a cork, pinecone, a mini planted succulent or holiday greenery), or perhaps these proud pewter turkeys - certainly fitting for any holiday table!
Tumblr media
To shop all of the items shown above, be sure to visit Maison Blue at 50 N 2nd St. Eagle, ID or online at www.maisonblue.com

Getting to Know Diane Panetta of Growing Wild Greenhouse
Tumblr media
We’re continuing our Volume 2 “Getting to Know” installment with DIANE PANETTA OF GROWING WILD GREENHOUSE. Panetta opened Growing Wild in 2017, a plant rental service for indoor and outdoor events (weddings, home staging, parties, conventions, party booths - you name it she’s done it)! Keep reading for more on Panetta, what inspires her, keeps her busy AND who is typically riding alongside during installation days.
JR: What inspired you to start your own business?
DP: I have always appreciated plants and the beauty and benefits they provide to the living world. Growing and renting beautiful, healthy plants allows me to share this with others. So many event spaces lack live greenery, and I wanted to change that. Being able to rent plants for short term occasions is an affordable way everyone can enjoy them without having to worry about keeping them alive or transporting them. This business is a perfect blend of organized science and chaotic creativity, mixed with just the right amount of social engagement for me. It is a lot of scheduled maintenance and physical labor, but it is also an art form for me. I’ve never been one for set schedules, paid vacation, and 9-5 jobs. I don’t do well sitting still for very long. I crave to be outside most of the time and have always have had jobs that honor that. This business is a collection of my passions, all under one greenhouse!
Tumblr media
JR: What do you love most about your career?
DP: I love seeing people light up when they see the plants I bring them. I don’t think people realize how much they enjoy plants until they are introduced into a space where they weren’t before. To witness a noticeable and positive change in everyone when they’re around live plants is really gratifying. I love that I can provide that for others. I also love the learning! I am constantly amazed by the new plants I come across, the new connections I make, the new information that I retain as a result of this business. My curiosity in so many things has grown right along with my plants and my business.
Tumblr media
JR: Tell us about one of your favorite recent projects?
DP: One of my most favorite recent projects was decorating an airplane hangar at Gowen Field for a “surprise” wedding! Avery Elle Weddings organized an amazing event, connecting with several other local vendors to coordinate a wedding that was almost entirely donated (everything but the chairs) to a deserving Air Force couple. It felt great to join together with others in the community, and create an unforgettable venue for this couple who had no idea what they were walking into!
Tumblr media
JR: Before you started your business, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
DP: Oh boy. Probably the most interesting was running dog sled teams, and guiding dog sled tours outside of Steamboat. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing when I started, but had a lot of fun learning along the way!
Tumblr media
JR: Any favorite words to live by?
“Let the beauty we love, be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” -Rumi
“The cost of inaction is vast. Don’t go to your grave with your best work inside you. Choose to die empty.” -Todd Henry
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.”  - Marianne Williamson (I came across this quote when I was 16, and have carried it with me ever since. If I could have lunch with anybody in the world, it would be this woman!)
Tumblr media
JR: When you’re not working, you’re ____?
DP: Hopefully spending time with my horse in the foothills, enjoying some tacos at Madre Boutique Taqueria, catching up with friends on local trails/Greenbelt.
Tumblr media
JR: What’s on your desk (or in the Greenhouse) that you can’t live without?
DP: My dog, Chloe! She is my trusty sidekick. The best dog I could ever hope for. She is with me about 94.7% of the time, in the greenhouse, at gardening jobs, picking up and dropping off plants…you name it, she always wants to be included.

24 Hours with Camille Olson  of The Design House
Camille Olson purchased The Design House three years ago with a vision to establish a workplace built on approachable, positive, efficient and collaborative design services.  We recently sat down together for an inside peek at her life both inside and outside of work. A traditionally private person, she thoughtfully shared what a typical day in her life looks like below.
Tumblr media
photo: Snapshots by Jolene
5:30am - I wake up at the same time and either practice or teach yoga 7 days a week at YogaSix. My practice truly is my grounding and where I find balance and a spiritual reprieve during busy or stressful times. After yoga, I tend to lean toward a quick and easy breakfast along with a much-needed stop for coffee at Dutch Brothers. Now that I'm an empty nester (Olson's daughter recently relocated to California, and her son is a student at BSU), I really try to take that early morning window as time just to myself.
Tumblr media
(Olson, photographed with her daughter): Ampersand Creative
8:30 / 9am - I arrive at the office and tackle administrative work and plan for the day. My current staff includes 5 designers and an admin team, and each month we get together for a team member meeting where we all sit down and Skype in remote employees. Creating a positive work environment and opening up a platform for questions and feedback is so important to the culture I hope to build for this office.
10am - It's fairly regular to have product knowledge meetings with our vendors at least twice a week. It can range from previewing the latest trends and offerings from furnishings to fabrics, flooring, tile and window coverings. Honestly, any element that can be found in our clients' homes is a priority to educate our team on.
12pm - I'm loyal to another local small business, Rise & Grind for my lunch fix (I love the Mexican Mocha Shake). It always feels so nice to support people in local business and they are without a doubt one of my favorites. I gravitate towards a healthy on-the-go lunch option as I'm often rushing out the door for meetings in the afternoon.
2pm - I love the culture being created here at The Design House and building this brand, but I'm thrilled to have recently started taking on my own clients again. My afternoons are typically dedicated to working directly with those clients, as well as builders or contractors.
4pm - 6pm -  I'm typically wrapping up my office day around this time and when I get the chance I enjoy spending quiet evenings unwinding at home. This time of year I love grilling simple, fresh meals and relaxing on the patio. I also am very active with philanthropic efforts, and evenings often include events supporting local non-profits close to my heart (Idaho Youth Ranch/Wine Women and Shoes, St. Alphonsus, Women's & Children's Alliance, Camp Rainbow Gold and Dress for Success).

Augusto Fine Rugs + SOI BOI Color Collaboration
Tumblr media
You can often find the duo behind the design firm SOI BOI (Rita Howerton and Shay O'Connor) pulling selections for their clients from the Augusto Fine Rugs showroom. Owner Anna Augusto has filled her space with handmade rugs, accessories and one of a kind vintage selections from all over the world. For us, it’s always a thrill to see two TSG members collaborating regardless of the project. I was fortunate enough to recently follow along as these members combined forces to discuss design, color and the stunning impact a rug and bold accessories can have on a room.

We started off at the Augusto showroom, pulling from the pieces Anna recently imported during her travels to Morocco. The connection she has to each piece is evident through her stories of traveling the country, meeting with artisans and spending time in the weaving facilities where each rug comes to life. “Being able to connect with the weaver and the story behind each rug truly has become a driving force in building my business and contributing to this industry.”
Tumblr media
For this collaboration, the teams knew traditional Moroccan rugs (known for vibrant color and detailed pattern) can often be considered a bold choice when added to an existing neutral space. "I have found that the temptation to keep a space neutral is to stick with solid color,” shares Augusto.  “The reality is that a solid colored rug can read too visually heavy in a space. If you want to add color, stick with a bold color that has a pattern to it.  Often a large scale pattern, helps balance out the boldness of the color.  In addition, pulling accessories that also have color to help relate the two and keep the room enriched yet not overpowered.”  SOI BOI did just that, selecting two rug options that represented this design perspective. Next up, seeing the impact each rug would have on a designated space.
- THE BLANK SLATE -
Tumblr media
I consider myself the fortunate guinea pig who not only observed the initial selection process between these design forces, but also the install that ended up taking place in my very own living room. Considering I have the tendency to play it a little safe with color (hello white and grey), this space ended up providing a true blank slate for these fabulously creative minds to have a little fun.
Tumblr media
True to SOI BOI style, they pulled options that not only demonstrated bold color but also eye catching pattern. Along with the rug and accessory selections from Augusto, they incorporated pieces that already existed in my home.  “Regardless of the project our goal is always to enhance and elevate the look of your home by letting the space itself guide our design decisions,” shares O’Connor. “Taking this neutral living room and recognizing the existing aesthetic allowed us to really let the rugs shine without any major changes to furniture or layout.”
Tumblr media
First up, this stunning hand-knotted gold Moroccan. “I like this example for people that may be a bit hesitant to use color and are concerned about completely filling their space with a huge living room rug,” says Howerton. “The size of this rug would actually lend itself to layering with a larger, very neutral low pile rug to further fill the space without overwhelming it.” Augusto also noted “you'll want the bottom rug to be low pile or even a natural fiber, such as a jute, sisal or hemp, so the bottom rug adds the size, yet stays very neutral with texture.  The bottom rug is usually in the 8x10-10x14 range, and then the layered rug would be in the 5x8 to 6x9 size.”
This gold rug selection also allowed SOI BOI to really demonstrate how traditional accessories can work right alongside a bold rug. “That thin little stripe of mustard yellow in an existing throw pillow really tied the selections together,” shared O’Connor.
Tumblr media
Next up, MORE color, pattern and a complete transformation with this vibrant selection featuring shades of burgundy, blush, teal, orange and black. “This rug absolutely brought the space to life and truly complimented the warm floors and fireplace subway tile, said Howerton. “It really proved the point that a Moroccan can easily exist alongside more traditional finishes and neutral accessories.”
Tumblr media
Speaking of accessories, the fresh eyes SOI BOI brought into the space again reinforced the impact color and texture has throughout a home. “Any accessories that are made by human hands are such a good fit for our hand-knotted rugs,” said Augusto. “The authenticity of the hand-made product is a perfect compliment to the rugs.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The jury is still out on which rug is coming home for good - be sure to let us know your favorite and visit our Instagram page (tsgboise) for behind the scenes footage and outtakes from this collaboration! You can browse all of the rugs and accessories featured here on the Augusto Fine Rugs website and contact Shay + Rita directly over at SOI BOI. Be sure to tell them the Scout sent you (and be sure to say YES to color)!

Summer has certainly arrived in the Treasure Valley with temperatures reaching the upper 80's this week. The team at Alexander Davis, an institution in downtown Boise since 1891, is sharing a few menswear tips below for a summer closet that is both functional and on trend.
Tumblr media
Tip #1 INCORPORATE COLOR

Tip #2 FABRIC + FIT
Assistant Store Manager Kevin Hadway also shares that the obvious summer transition is from slacks to shorts, long sleeves to short, but fabric also makes a huge difference. Known for their made-to-measure services, Alexander Davis allows clientele to personally select specific fabrics, cuts and finishes to design a garment they can truly call their own.

TIP TUESDAY with Diane Panetta of Growing Wild Greenhouse
Tumblr media
Do you love the look and benefits of having live plants in your home, but convinced you'll never be able to keep them alive and thriving? TSG Boise Local Discoveries Member Diane Panetta of GROWING WILD GREENHOUSE ensures us you are NOT alone. She’s sharing a few key tips for success below that will leave you believing in both yourself and your plants.
DP: All too often I strike up a conversation with someone at an event who's admiring a rented fiddle leaf fig, or a passerby at the market who's accompanying her plant-loving friend at my booth, and I hear them almost sheepishly tell me with some alarm that they have a "brown/black thumb", or that they can't keep anything alive and plants don't like them.
It honestly breaks my heart a little every time!
Here's what I want to say to all of them (and would if we had the time)...
Tumblr media
1) Try not to take it personally. Plants naturally want to live and thrive. They are not judging you, or your lack of knowledge in their care. They are as forgiving as life can biologically be, and do the best they can given the non-natural environments we subject them to (think lush, rainforest-floor dweller moved into a 10" black plastic pot that now resides in a Boise townhome with one nearby glass window).
2) Get informed. If someone gifted you an armadillo (and there was no chance you could re-gift it), what would you do? Hopefully, you'd try to learn what kind of care it needed! What does it eat? What does it like/not like? Is it normal for it to do that thing it does? The same is true with plants. They are living things that require a certain level of care and maintenance. A plant owner gets to learn about each of his/her new foliage friend's needs. We live in the magical time of Google, and everything and anything can be found there...including tons of great information on plants! If you prefer other methods, the library has plenty of books on the topic, as does your local extension office, plenty of master gardeners and garden clubs in the area (not to mention all of the talented nursery/garden center/plant professionals who spend each day answering your type of questions). Just ask!
Tumblr media
3) Be kind and gracious to yourself when your plant dies. Yes...not "if", but "when". Because the truth is, we've all killed a plant - or twelve - in our day. And as sad and unfortunate as it can be, it helps us realize what we might have been doing wrong. It's how we can grow! When something dies, inspect it and try to learn from the situation. Pull it out of its pot and look at the roots. Are they a soggy, brown mess? You probably rotted them by overwatering. Inspect the plant closely. Are there pests you didn't treat for? That might have also had something to do with its decline. Although a plant autopsy might sound a little morbid and strange, it's really just another way to ensure you do better with your next plant!
4) Buy from a reputable source. I know we all want a good deal, but I'm here to tell you, not all plants are grown/treated equally. How they are produced, as well as managed and handled in between the time they leave the grower and make it to the storefront, can easily effect your success as a plant owner. Be sure that they are healthy and happy before you bring them home.
5) Pick the right plant friends. Assess the light in your space and choose accordingly. If you go on vacation for two weeks at a time, take that into account too. Some plants require a little more specific care than others. Find out what plants will thrive in your space before bringing them home.
6) Lastly...Have fun, stay curious, and believe in yourself AND your plants!! No matter what color you think your thumb is, plant ownership is definitely worth it!

Booking That Next Med Spa Appointment
Medical Spa facilities and treatment options can be overwhelming these days as the popularity of aesthetic procedures increase. We recently spent time with Katie Buchanan of Elite Medical Aesthetics in Meridian, ID who shared three areas to focus on when selecting a Med Spa to ensure both a positive experience and results.
Tumblr media
#1 - Do your research
It's always worth that extra bit of time and research to understand the background of medical professionals on staff.  To ensure safety, a med spa should be run by a doctor or nurse practitioner who is certified in aesthetic medicine.  Education along with extensive knowledge of the latest techniques and medical equipment is critical. "You'll want to be sure the staff has plenty of experience with the treatments and procedures they are administering," shares Buchanan.  Details on education, experience and training are often listed on business websites, if not - don't hesitate to ask!
Tumblr media
#2 - Word of Mouth
Without question, reputation is everything in this business. Take time to browse online reviews and testimonials about the Medical Spa you are considering. Consistently positive reviews are a sign of consistent work with clear results.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#3 - Before + After
A notable Medical Spa will always be willing to share before and after images or client results. "These photos are a great way to visualize what can be expected for specific procedures,” says Buchanan. “Refreshing and natural results are easy to spot when compared to exaggerated or unnatural.”
Tumblr media
Katie is both a Medical Aesthetics Nurse Specialist and an Advanced Cosmetic Injector. Her experience ranges from Plastic Surgery where she worked in the operating room and performed both facial laser procedures and cosmetic injections, to the corporate world where she travels nationally as a Clinical Educator, training doctors and nurses on current best practices and various advanced techniques of facial/dermal fillers and neuromodulators such as Botox® Cosmetic, Xeomin® and Dysport. She has personally instructed hundreds of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses across the country in successful principles and practices of non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Known for her clinical expertise and artistic eye, Katie strives to make her patients feel relaxed, secure and comfortable during every treatment she performs. Building relationships and getting to know her patients on a professional and personal level is a highlight of her practice.
Tumblr media
When Katie is not working, you can find her staying busy with her two children (14 year old son and 11 year old daughter). An avid fan of the outdoors, her family makes sure to soak up all the Treasure Valley has to offer - whether it's snowboarding in the winter or enjoying the lake in the summer. Her perfect day in Boise right now would be a morning hike up to Table Rock, brunch at Bacon and browsing the Saturday market.
Elite Medical Aesthetics is located at 2971 East Copper Point Drive, Suite 125 in Meridian, ID. You can read more about Katie and the services available at Elite (as well as request an appointment) at https://elitemdaestheticsboise.com

Meet the Three Squirrels!
Tumblr media
The Three Squirrels, sisters Carrie (classic first born), Amy (gypsy middle) and Steph (sporty baby), were all born and raised in Idaho. Carrie was born in Twin Falls, and Amy and Steph shortly followed after their parents moved to Nampa. Daughters of an educator and a vegetable seed man, the girls were often lovingly referred to as their mom's “squirrels”. The name stuck, and the rest is history…
Tumblr media
The Squirrels grew up with excellent examples. Their parents, Nancy and Charley, modeled kindness, love and courtesy daily, and their girls benefited from an early understanding of how courtesy and respect for others can help a person get along in the world. They wanted to share what they had learned, and the idea of an alphabet book of manners for children was born.
Tumblr media
Carrie, Amy and Steph have all spent most of their lives in and around the Treasure Valley, and they have fond memories of the many local activities that Boise has to offer. Attending The Idaho Shakespeare Festival, visiting the stately Capitol Building for field trips, and enjoying concerts at The BSU Pavilion (now Taco Bell Arena) were some of their favorite outings. They also recall camping trips in our majestic mountains, floating the Boise River, and the famous Thompson Sunday drives, tooling around looking at crops with their mom and dad. They attended summer camps in The Cascades, and Seed Association Conventions in McCall and Sun Valley. Growing up in Idaho was the best! The Squirrels truly love the Gem State.
Tumblr media
Recently, The Three Squirrels’ Alphabet Book of Manners has been donated by a local company to Kindergarten students all over our great Treasure Valley. The Squirrels have a strong love for schools and have been honored to visit so many in Boise and surrounding communities when making their deliveries.
Tumblr media
Carrie and Steph, along with their families, currently live in the Boise area, and Amy lives in South Carolina with her husband, but you’d better believe they make time to gather and collaborate any chance they get!
Copies of The Alphabet Book of Manners can be ordered via their website:
www.thethreesquirrels.com
Additionally, you can learn more about upcoming events and partnerships (including a Thank You Note Workshop on May 18th) on their Instagram page (@thethreequirrels)!
