Your not a women if you don't know how to cook...

Shocking title right? Well, it's definitely common to hear these days in the muslim culture and I can say for other cultures as well. 

I tried... I really trying. From trying to learn from my mother right after I got married. To watching youtube videos turning out ok or good but the flavor is not like what you usually taste when your mom or family friends cook it. I also try to incorporate American food, which the kids love like pasta, pizza, tacos, etc... but then you husband doesn't want to eat it all the time. 

So the first person you would lean from is from your mom. Mom knows the best and her cooking its just simply the best whatever she cooks. However her teaching skills are not the best, especially her measurements, name of ingredients and timing was like a game of fill in the blanks. 

Example: “Oh just add some salt by tasting it as your pour, or adding water into a pot but just enough water but not too much close to the top, or add this spice and that spice but have no clue what it is because they all look the same and not knowing what its called in english.

And when the attempted dish is finally made its either too salty, needs more salt, taste burnt, too dry, watery, soggy (rice) etc... So I've really given up on my moms cooking classes. She is a wonderful cook and makes cooking look so easy as she says it herself all the time. But I've had so many trials and errors that I could not ever host a party at my house with all the Afghan food you would see at a mehmani (guest party). 

Now You tube is a blessing... sometimes. It helps me to make a decent meal. But I have a few issues with them. First of all not all regions of my country cook the same way or have the same flavors. Im from Kandahar which is in the south of the country of Afghanistan. Other regions  way of making food especially the herbs and spices used in dishes are different from what I was used to eating at my house and also family friends from the same region. Second, I can guarantee you that they add an ingredient that I don't have and I have to buy just to make their exact this. This end up me having too many spice and her mixes that ill probably use once more or twice. I mean I would have garlic paste , ginger paste, fresh garlic and fresh ginger. FYI: Iv never seen my mom use ginger in her cooking ever! 

What is definitely frustrating about the whole cooking thing is, the spouses not  contributing at all. Because “A"-they don't know how to cook and lie about they're cooking skills during the early stages of engagement 'B"-They lie saying takeaway, restaurant eating will be part of they lifestyle for a while but in reality they start to want homemade food ready and taste just like how their mothers made it for them growing up.  “C"-They don't think it's a job for a man to cook at home. And in some cases like mine didn’t want my moms cooking even though it was 100% way better than what I could have made simply just to try and mold me into being that house wife. 

After a decade of trying to cook, I've come to a realization that I really need a good teacher specially one from my home region, who speaks and understands English and gives me the correct measurement and doesn't have to make me go buy extra ingredients for a recipe. 

I can cook but to be honest ever since I'm back at my moms house Ive left the cooking to her and starting to forget the recipes that I do know. But it's ok as long as everyone is being fed I'm good and there is always the pasta and pizza and burgers that are easy to make. Don't ever feel that if you can't cook your not a whole women. Your spouse should be involved with it and not criticize . But Always remember whatever you make your kids will eat it and remember the flavor palette till when they grow up. So that is something to feel accomplish for.
