Carmilla (2014-2017) really did have it all huh. Lesbians. Vampires. Cults. Mildly toxic main relationship. Canon nonbinary character. Most of the action happening offscreen. Shitty special effects. One (1) straight character and he was a himbo. Sponsored by a period products brand. Some pretty damn good costuming for that low of a budget. And it was all literally just a college au fanfic of a novel from the 19th century. Truly peak entertainment.

Thoughts on why season zero of Carmilla was so much less popular than the other seasons?

I have several theories. It may also be a combination of multiple things:

1. Being stuck in a single location, which worked really well in season 1 but was stretched more in season 2 through moving to different rooms based on what was happening in the plot. 

2. It being a prequel that focused heavily on characterizing Kirsch, Mel, and Perry. Through this characterization, what we know of both Perry and Mel’s personalities is completely turned around: Perry is a flower-child deeply curious in the occult, whereas Mel is shy and insecure. The events of Season Zero cause the shift into their recognizable (complete opposite) forms of Seasons 1-2, which may have created a sense that the characters’ personalities aren’t authentic.

3. The deadnaming and misgendering of Lafontaine (due to it being a prequel).

4. Being wedged in after a depressing and tense end to season two, which may have left people feeling like the events of season zero weren’t particularly important considering how things ended up. 

5. “Perry goes through a dangerous, dramatic experience with the supernatural and so subsequently refuses to believe any of it really happened/exists in order to cope mentally” didn’t go over as well with the audience as the writers thought it would. 

6. Limited amount of Carmilla, who let’s be real is the fandom darling, and Hollstein as a ship.

Mel is such an unhinged fucking character. She’s morally ambiguous! She hunted a man for sport! She watched her (homoerotic?) rival be murdered by someone else! She’s a student athlete (apparently? Though I don’t think we ever find out what sport she plays)! She gets forced into a student slave labor force! She gets into yet another (homoerotic) rivalry whilst acting as a leader among the student slave labor force! She becomes (sort of) friends with the man she hunted for sport! She kisses the ghost of Charlotte Brontë! She’s a lesbian! She’s genre-aware! She looks hot in a suit! She shoots a ghost with a crossbow! Truly one of the characters of all time
