West Melbourne Walmart temporarily closes for deep cleaning
A Walmart store in West Melbourne closed Thursday afternoon and will reopen this weekend after the big-box store undergoes deep cleaning and sanitizing, officials with Walmart Corporate Affairs said. Read more here
Temporary closure of establishments has been a regular news during the pandemic. We are glad that these companies are responsible enough in ensuring the safety of their employees and customers by undergoing regular sanitation. We hope that with or without the corona virus, this practice will remain. Anyway, the few days of no-income can easily be recovered especially with increased trust of customers when shopping. While there are still many unvaccinated Americans out there, we cannot be too complacent with safety protocols. But we hope that more people will get themselves vaccinated. It is the easiest and fastest way that we all get back to our normal lives.

The specific Florida town I used to live in has this gorgeous mural of cartoon characters slaughtering each other and the couple people angry about it tried to start a facebook group to β€œunite melbourne against violent artwork” but nearly all of the comments are just praising the art and making fun of the whiners. I wonder if the people raging over a scary Hello Kitty ever got that worked up about the swastika graffiti already left around town or the severe homelessness or the waste dumping or...

β€œUNITY GODDESS”
by Danielle Henn
β€œShe is able to patch and stitch together,” University of Florida MA in Art Education student Danielle Henn says of her Unity Goddess mural, β€œbut she is also able to cut away hatred and evil with the scissors.” Created for the 2017 Anti-Gravity Project in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne, Florida, at Guava Ave and Eau Gallie Blvd, on the side of @saltyfox_, Henn developed the work in conjunction with the Space Coast Progressive Alliance (SCPA), and invited the community to add quotes and poems to the patchwork surrounding the goddess. Operating within sight of regular launches from the Kennedy Space Center, SCPA is a grassroots organization advocating the well-being and self-determination of all peoples, for protection of civil and personal liberties, and for progressive environmental, economic, labor, health care, social welfare, education, foreign, and defense policies.Β  @floridaspacecoastΒ Β @egadlifeΒ Β

The wonderful work of Robin RhodeΒ
Robin was raised in Johannesburg and graduated from the South Africa School of Film, Television and Dramatic Arts, Johannesburg, in 2000. The Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist engages a variety of visual languages such as photography, performance, drawing and sculpture to create arrestingly beautiful narratives that are brought to life using quotidian materials such as soap, charcoal, chalk and paint. Coming of age in a newly post-apartheid South Africa, Rhode was exposed to new forms of creative expression motivated by the spirit of the individual rather than dictated by a political or social agenda. The growing influence of hip-hop, film, and popular sports on youth culture as well as the community’s reliance on storytelling in the form of colorful murals encouraged the development of Rhode’s hybrid street-based aesthetic. His strategic interventions transform urban landscapes into imaginary worlds, compressing space and time, as two-dimensional renderings become the subject of three-dimensional interactions by a sole protagonist, usually played by the artist or by an actor inhabiting the role of anΒ artist. Melding individual expressionism with broader socio-economic concerns, Rhode’s work reveals a mastery of illusion, a rich range of historical and contemporary references, and an innate skill for blending high and low art forms. Given his first major museum solo show by Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany, in 2007, and Rhode has since had major solo exhibitions at a number of important museums around the world including the Hayward Gallery, London (2008); the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio (2009); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles (2010); the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2013); and the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York (2014). He has participated in notable group exhibitions including New Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2005; the 51st Venice Biennale (2005); Staging Action: Performance in Photography Since 1960, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011); and the 2012 Sydney Biennale. His work is included in numerous public collections, including the Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; PΓ©rez Art Museum Miami, Florida; MusΓ©e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Orlando Art Museum, Florida; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. The artist lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

A Village Encapsulated Inside a 5-Story Robot’s Head and Other Recent Murals by β€˜Phlegm’
This past month, Sheffield-based artistΒ PhlegmΒ (previously) revealed his latest mural, a 5-story tall robot on Chapel Street in Melbourne, Australia. The mechanical monster hides a village, or maybe an entire world, beneath its metal scalp, which it reveals while simultaneously dangling a lantern over the homes below. To create the work, Phlegm worked with the building’s mechanics, repurposing a flashing carpark light near the structure’s third floor into a beating heart for his large-scale visitor. You can see more of the muralist’s black and white illustrative pieces from the last year in Manchester, Florida, Oslo, and Toronto, as well as a time-lapse video of his Melbourne-based robot mural, below.
