Step 1 Record your observations, impressions, and research about the site, client, and brief (including mind-maps, and images)
First of all, Northshore is built on 304-hectare including public and private land which is placed along the 2,5km Brisbane river edge and located in the site of Brisbane River, Kingsford Smith Drive, and Gateway Bridge. Northshore is popular with the Eat Street area which supplies numerous experiences for local people and tourists. but, it is unworthy if the other sites are not developed. According to the client brief which is Economic Development Queensland part of Northshore wharf is made of timber and they also worked on container shipping which makes it distinctive. The main purpose is to develop this area to be linked with historical background and improve the site to become more interactive, originally, innovative, and a specific destination both for residents and tourists by placemaking.

Example of placemaking ideas
-Maze garden with AR technology collaboration
-Floating market in the waterfront area

Step2 Brainstorming ideas, including sources of inspiration, concepts, and theories
The placemaking examples for waterfront projects:
The popular Lad Plee Floating Market operated in 1971 located at Chiang Mai, Thailand become an iconic place for tourist attractions (Pol Comaposada, n.d.). As it can be seen from Culture Trips (2017, 1:00) the concept is selling various goods, food, and drinks on the boat that gives a special feeling for visitors to try. All the good's price is very cheap and unique and the locals give a chance to bargain with the bottom price which is relatively low.
The examples of AR technology placemaking project:
Norton Art Museum at West Palm, Beach, Florida has launched apps called Norton Art+ works on AR technology that assist visitors to explore each museum artwork. By, scanning through the gadget it writes a piece of specific information about the artworks and provides guidance on the museum area that is virtually displayed. Norton Art+ invites young audiences to explore the contemporary 3D art concept and ideas by learning and playing through the picture virtually (Chadd Scott, 2020, para. 8). This art museum encourages tourists in all ages to imagine the process of the artworks that have been created. The AR technology produces 3D models combination of artworks to explain deeper understanding and left a pleasant impression for visitors. The development of AR technology has attracted more tourists and residents' intention to visit and know the history. It also enhances the growth of brand awareness (Joy Jan, 2022, para. 1-3).
Step 3 Research and compare your concept to similar, to existing projects
First of all, I research on maze park near me on google because I was wondering if there were any maze parks in Queensland but, in fact, there is one maze garden located on the sunshine coast where known as Amaze World. Then, during my research, I found Enchanted Adventure placed in Arthur Seats, in Melbourne. The theme park has won an award with five massive tube slides, followed by an indoor 3D dimensional indoor maze with four hedge mazes and numerous theme gardens. Both of the maze gardens are not developing the park with technology whereas this is a chance for us to improve the ideas. Moreover, these parks can be called family friendly because the activities and challenges inside the park are divided into two different age groups for children-teenager and adults which can be enjoyed by all ages. This concept is the most wonderful idea I can think of to meet the client brief criteria which are Economic Development Queensland. It also becomes a suitable idea to be applied, as it is calculated from the location and budget that is given.
Why is it different from other similar projects?
The main thing is this maze park going to be connected with an app and collaboration of AR technology. Both combinations are to provide guidance and connection along the maze park adventure while visitor finds a way out to the finish line. During playtime, each checkpoint inside the maze garden gives a small quiz about the indigenous history of Northshore becomes one of the reasons why it is different from other similar projects. Besides, this project location is placed near the river site which can be enjoyed by parents or family. With the waterfront presence, it may give a sense of relaxation when they look through the river while accompanying their children.
Is the site-specific enough?
Of course, it is. The Maritime green especially the site of the wharf area will be filled with the Maze park and this concept idea are focusing on the Northshore indigenous history through the game questions in the stages of the checkpoint line.
Is it originality?
Yes, it is. The placemaking idea is integrating this free space to become a maze park as it ties a value of indigenous history that brings originality. The game's contents talk about Hamilton's history that will educate the tourists about the indigenous histories. Moreover, this is not a simple maze park and question game about Northshore history, this concept ideas develop an entertaining aspect with the AR technology. Furthermore, in Brisbane, this will be the only placemaking project that broadens up the knowledge of Hamilton's indigenous history that cooperate with an amazing park.
Is the concept valuable for Northshore?
Yes, it is. Developing the wharf area is definitely upgrading the value of the Northshore site. Looking back to the client's request from this placemaking project, they seek for positive impact to attract the tourists and residents' attention to visiting the Northshore area as a destination. For now, the main place that audiences approach is the Eat Street site. Moreover,  with the maze park presence, it will change the environment where people can feel interesting to visit Northshore. For example, family or friends that live in the site area of Northshore can have a picnic and do some exercise in the park while their children go and have fun through the maze park. Furthermore, this project basically does not just give a sense of playfulness it brought the history of Northshore and some of the indigenous culture.
Step 4 Focus on one main concept to progress, give an explanation of why you have chosen this concept, and how it meets the brief
Firstly, before I decide to use AR technology in this project development, there are multiple ideas popped up in my mind. But, nowadays technology development comes first. Then, I was considering the concept ideas I had chosen whether it is interactive, creative or originally to transform Northshore become a destination on reaching more visitors in accordance with the client's brief request. Moreover, I did some research about AR technology that has been used and spread in worldwide art galleries. Overall, I picked Norton Art Museum as my source of inspiration to create digital placemaking in this maze park project. However, rather than playing on a simple maze park, I broaden up new ideas which are to connect AR technology by using apps to integrate the historical site of Northshore. The maze park concept was built for a specific purpose which is to let visitors experience AR technology that works in nature. The AR technology going to be a virtual guide for visitors when they explore the maze park. Before, the visitor starts their challenges there is a video play on a big projector in the main entrance that will introduce an explanation of Northshore briefly and indigenous history. At every checkpoint, there will be a different QR code that leads the visitors to scan and answer simple questions about Northshore that they have watched at first. Each question has a time limitation to be answered. Upon the checkpoint section, there is a hint provided to assist visitors to find a way out. Each checkpoint contains points that can be exchanged for souvenirs at the finish line. For sure, this concept brings a lot of positivity to young people. The activity is able to improve young audiences' various skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, digital skill, analytical skill & time management. This will be the reason for visitors or parents to invite their kids or family to visit or come back to Northshore, because it does not only attract people to play games or have fun but, it gives new knowledge to young teenagers learning about this site.
Step 5 Economic Development Queensland as client brief (Budget $40,000-$70,000)
Tumblr media
6. Concept Pitch
“Amaze you with an amazing maze park adventure”
The main concept of maze park is to attract visitors and give them a new experience by using AR technology that produces virtual images from a gadget that simply works by scanning a QR code. It will show specific instructions for visitors to go through the checkpoint to find a way out to the finish line. Moreover, every stage of the checkpoint is spreading the knowledge of indigenous history and is delivered to the player through the games.
Skill needed:
-teamwork (helping each other to find a way out)
-critical thinking (think of the easiest way out in a short time and get a higher point in answering a question)
-problem-solving (try to find a solution using the app if stuck inside the park or get lost)
-digital skills (photoshop, AR)
-analytical skill (examine new things)

"ECSTATIC WAVE"
by Taylor White
"[My] work explores the way in which we experience the formless chaos of potential through being, and how the order we inhabit can sometimes dissolve backwards into the incredible complexity from which it emerged."
Raleigh figurative artist Taylor White studied at Savannah College of Art and Design, and while now living back in North Carolina she has established roots across the globe—working as a full-time illustrator for a Norwegian advertising agency then pursuing painting in Australia and "furnishing the streets and galleries of Melbourne with her uniquely haunting, expressive portraits of forlorn youth." White says her work combines techniques of classical training with bright, unexpected color choices born from the residue of street art and pop culture. The "unexpected colors" of Ecstatic Wave were painted on this N Dr MLK Jr St wall in St Pete, Florida, for the 2019 Shine festival.  @taylurk/  @shineonstpete/

Janet Gaynor (born Laura Augusta Gainor; October 6, 1906 – September 14, 1984) was an American film, stage and television actress and painter.
Gaynor began her career as an extra in shorts and silent films. After signing with Fox Film Corporation (later 20th Century-Fox) in 1926, she rose to fame and became one of the biggest box office draws of the era. In 1929, she was the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performances in three films: 7th Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), and Street Angel (1928). This was the only occasion on which an actress has won one Oscar for multiple film roles. Gaynor's career success continued into the sound film era, and she achieved a notable success in the original version of A Star Is Born (1937), for which she received a second Best Actress Academy Award nomination.
After retiring from acting in 1939, Gaynor married film costume designer Adrian with whom she had a son. She briefly returned to acting in films and television in the 1950s and later became an accomplished oil painter. In 1980, Gaynor made her Broadway debut in the stage adaptation of the 1971 film Harold and Maude and appeared in the touring theatrical production of On Golden Pond in February 1982. In September 1982, she sustained multiple injuries when the taxicab in which she and others were passengers was struck by a drunken driver. These injuries eventually caused her death in September 1984.
Gaynor was born Laura Augusta Gainor (some sources stated Gainer) in Germantown, Philadelphia. Nicknamed "Lolly" as a child, she was the younger of two daughters born to Laura (Buhl) and Frank De Witt Gainor. Frank Gainor worked as a theatrical painter and paperhanger. When Gaynor was a toddler, her father began teaching her how to sing, dance, and perform acrobatics. As a child in Philadelphia, she began acting in school plays. After her parents divorced in 1914, Gaynor, her sister, and her mother moved to Chicago. Shortly thereafter, her mother married electrician Harry C. Jones. The family later moved west to San Francisco.
After graduating from San Francisco Polytechnic High School in 1923, Gaynor spent the winter vacationing in Melbourne, Florida, where she did stage work. Upon returning to San Francisco, Gaynor, her mother, and stepfather moved to Los Angeles, where she could pursue an acting career. She was initially hesitant to do so, and enrolled at Hollywood Secretarial School. She supported herself by working in a shoe store and later as a theatre usher. Her mother and stepfather continued to encourage her to become an actress and she began making the rounds to the studios (accompanied by her stepfather) to find film work.
Gaynor won her first professional acting job on December 26, 1924, as an extra in a Hal Roach comedy short. This led to more extra work in feature films and shorts for Film Booking Offices of America and Universal. Universal eventually hired her as a stock player for $50 a week. Six weeks after being hired by Universal, an executive at Fox Film Corporation offered her a screen test for a supporting role in the film The Johnstown Flood (1926). Her performance in the film caught the attention of Fox executives, who signed her to a five-year contract and began to cast her in leading roles. Later that year, Gaynor was selected as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars (along with Joan Crawford, Dolores del Río, Mary Astor, and others).
By 1927, Gaynor was one of Hollywood's leading ladies. Her image was that of a sweet, wholesome, and pure young woman who was notable for playing her roles with depth and sensitivity. Her performances in 7th Heaven, the first of 12 films she would make with actor Charles Farrell; Sunrise, directed by F. W. Murnau; and Street Angel, also with Charles Farrell, earned her the first Academy Award for Best Actress in 1929, when for the first and only time the award was granted for multiple roles, on the basis of total recent work rather than for one particular performance. This practice was prohibited three years later by a new Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rule. Gaynor was not only the first actress to win the award, but at 22, was also the youngest until 1986, when actress Marlee Matlin, 21, won for her role in Children of a Lesser God.
Gaynor was one of only a handful of established lead actresses who made a successful transition to sound films. In 1929, she was reteamed with Charles Farrell (the pair was known as "America's favorite love birds") for the musical film Sunny Side Up. During the early 1930s, Gaynor was one of Fox's most popular actresses and one of Hollywood's biggest box office draws. In 1931 and 1932, she and Marie Dressler were tied as the number-one box office draws. After Dressler's death in 1934, Gaynor held the top spot alone.[9] She was often cited as a successor to Mary Pickford, and was cast in remakes of two Pickford films, Daddy Long Legs (1931) and Tess of the Storm Country (1932). Gaynor drew the line at a proposed remake of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, which she considered "too juvenile".
Gaynor continued to garner top billing for roles in State Fair (1933) with Will Rogers and The Farmer Takes a Wife (1935), which introduced Henry Fonda to the screen as Gaynor's leading man. However, when Darryl F. Zanuck merged his fledgling studio, Twentieth Century Pictures, with Fox Film Corporation to form 20th Century-Fox, her status became precarious and even tertiary to those of burgeoning actresses Loretta Young and Shirley Temple. According to press reports at the time, Gaynor held out on signing with the new 20th Century-Fox until her salary was raised from $1,000 a week to $3,000. The studio quickly issued a statement denying that Gaynor was holding out for more money. She quietly signed a new contract, the terms of which were never made public.
Gaynor received top billing above Constance Bennett, Loretta Young, and Tyrone Power in Ladies in Love (1937) but her box office appeal had already begun to wane: once ranked number one, she had dropped to number 24. She considered retiring due to her frustration with studio executives, who continued to cast her in the same type of role that brought her fame while audiences' tastes were changing. After 20th Century-Fox executives proposed that her contract be renegotiated and she be demoted to featured player status, Gaynor left the studio, but her retirement plans were quashed when David O. Selznick offered her the leading role in a new film to be produced by his company, Selznick International Pictures. Selznick, who was friendly with Gaynor off-screen, was convinced that audiences would enjoy seeing her portray a character closer to her true personality. He believed that she possessed the perfect combination of humor, charm, vulnerability, and innocence for the role of aspiring actress Esther Blodgett (later "Vicki Lester") in A Star Is Born. Gaynor accepted the role. The romantic drama was filmed in Technicolor and co-starred Fredric March. Released in 1937, it was an enormous hit and earned Gaynor her second Academy Award nomination for Best Actress; she lost to Luise Rainer for The Good Earth.
A Star Is Born revitalized Gaynor's career, and she was cast in the screwball comedy The Young in Heart (1938) with Paulette Goddard. That film was a modest hit, but by then Gaynor had definitely decided to retire. She later explained, "I had been working steadily for 17 long years, making movies was really all I knew of life. I just wanted to have time to know other things. Most of all I wanted to fall in love. I wanted to get married. I wanted a child. And I knew that in order to have these things one had to make time for them. So I simply stopped making movies. Then as if by a miracle, everything I really wanted happened." At the top of the industry, she retired at age 33.
In August 1939, Gaynor married Hollywood costume designer Adrian with whom she had a son in 1940. The couple divided their time between their 250-acre cattle ranch in Anápolis, Brazil, and their homes in New York and California. Both were also heavily involved in the fashion and arts community. Gaynor returned to acting in the early 1950s with appearances in live television anthology series including Medallion Theatre, Lux Video Theatre, and General Electric Theater.[8] In 1957, she appeared in her final film role as Dick Sargent's mother in the musical comedy Bernardine, starring Pat Boone and Terry Moore. In November 1959, she made her stage debut in the play The Midnight Sun, in New Haven, Connecticut. The play, which Gaynor later called "a disaster", was not well received and closed shortly after its debut.
Gaynor also became an accomplished oil painter of vegetable and flower still lifes. She sold over 200 paintings and had four showings under the Wally Findlay Galleries banner in New York, Chicago, and Palm Beach from 1975 to February 1982.
In 1980, Gaynor made her Broadway debut as "Maude" in the stage adaptation of the 1971 film Harold and Maude. She received good reviews for her performance, but the play was panned by critics and closed after 21 performances. Later that year, she reunited with her Servants' Entrance co-star Lew Ayres to film an episode of the anthology series The Love Boat. It was the first television appearance Gaynor had made since the 1950s and was her last screen role. In February 1982, she starred in the touring production of On Golden Pond. This was her final acting role.
Gaynor was romantically involved with her friend and frequent co-star, Charles Farrell, during the time of their work together in silent film, until she married her first husband. Choosing to keep their relationship out of the public eye, Gaynor and Farrell were often assisted by mutual friend Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in maintaining the ruse. Looking back, Fairbanks would later recall, "We three were so chummy that I became their 'beard,' the cover-up for their secret romance. I would drive them out to a little rundown, wooden house well south of Los Angeles, near the sea. I'd leave them there and go sailing or swimming until [it was] time to collect them and then we'd all have a bit of dinner."
According to Gaynor's biographer Sarah Baker, Farrell proposed marriage during the filming of Lucky Star, but the two never followed through with it. In her later years, Gaynor would hold their different personalities accountable for their eventual separation.
Gaynor was married three times and had one child. Her first marriage was to lawyer Jesse Lydell Peck, whom she married on September 11, 1929. Gaynor's attorney announced the couple's separation in late December 1932.
She was granted a divorce on April 7, 1933. On August 14, 1939, she married MGM costume designer Adrian in Yuma, Arizona. This relationship has been called a lavender marriage, since Adrian was openly gay within the film community while Gaynor was rumored to be gay or bisexual. The couple had one son, Robin Gaynor Adrian, born in 1940. Those rumors were never hinted at in newspapers or magazines. Gaynor and Adrian remained married until Adrian's death from a stroke on September 13, 1959.
On December 24, 1964, Gaynor married her longtime friend, stage producer Paul Gregory, to whom she remained married until her death. The two maintained a home in Desert Hot Springs, California and also owned 3,000 acres of land near Brasília.
Gaynor and her husband traveled frequently with her close friend Mary Martin and her husband. A Brazilian press report noted that Gaynor and Martin briefly lived with their respective husbands in Anapolis, state of Goiás at a ranch (fazenda in Portuguese) in the 1950s and 1960s – both houses are still there nowadays. There is a project by the Jan Magalinski Institute to restore their houses to create a Cinema Museum of Goiás.
On the evening of September 5, 1982, Gaynor, her husband Paul Gregory, actress Mary Martin, and Martin's manager Ben Washer were involved in a serious car accident in San Francisco. A van ran a red light at the corner of California and Franklin Streets and crashed into the Luxor taxicab in which the group was riding, knocking it into a tree. Ben Washer was killed, Mary Martin sustained two broken ribs and a broken pelvis, and Gaynor's husband suffered two broken legs. Gaynor sustained several serious injuries, including 11 broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, pelvic fractures, a punctured lung, and injuries to her bladder and kidney. The driver of the van, Robert Cato, was arrested on two counts of felony drunk driving, reckless driving, speeding, running a red light, and vehicular homicide. Cato pleaded not guilty and was later released on $10,000 bail. On March 15, 1983, he was found guilty of drunk driving and vehicular homicide and was sentenced to three years in prison.
As a result of her injuries, Gaynor was hospitalized for four months and underwent two surgeries to repair a perforated bladder and internal bleeding. She recovered sufficiently to return to her home in Desert Hot Springs, but continued to experience health issues due to the injuries and required frequent hospitalizations. Shortly before her death, she was hospitalized for pneumonia and other ailments. On September 14, 1984, Gaynor died at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs at the age of 77. Her doctor, Bart Apfelbaum, attributed her death to the 1982 car accident and stated that Gaynor "...never recovered" from her injuries.
Gaynor is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery next to her second husband, Adrian. Her headstone reads "Janet Gaynor Gregory", her legal name after her marriage to her third husband, producer and director Paul Gregory.
For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Janet Gaynor has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6284 Hollywood Blvd.
On March 1, 1978, Howard W. Koch, then the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, presented Gaynor with a citation for her "truly immeasurable contribution to the art of motion pictures".
In 1979, Gaynor was awarded the Order of the Southern Cross for her cultural contributions to Brazil.

Underwater America with Peter Potamus: Florida’s Space Coast
Tumblr media
art by MaudeDraws (https://www.deviantart.com/maudedraws)
This story continues a Friday Fanfic series which debuted late last year, in which Peter Potamus and friends go on a cross-country tour of the nation’s most interesting diving sites in the hope of selling their adventures to television. This story takes place early in the summer of 1970.
I drove the bus out of Ocala at around six o’clock in the morning while everyone else inside was still sleeping off our latest refreshing adventure.
Early into the next leg of our cross-country tour, I pondered taking the winding country roads instead of the highway. I eventually decided on the highway, for the roads were generally less bumpy—thereby making the crew less irritable—and faster, even though we had lots of time to get to our next stop: Florida’s famous State Road A1A, featuring the longest stretches of beaches one could ever hope for.
About 90 minutes later, once everyone was awake, alert and begging for breakfast, we stopped at a diner in Ocoee, not far from Orlando, Walt Disney’s latest conquest. In fact, as we sat in two separate booths looking at menus, the conversation turned to the resort.
“What do you think he’s got there?” Breezly pondered.
“Do you think we could get up close and take pictures?” asked a slightly hyperactive Squiddly, shivering with delight.
“Yeah!” Magilla giddily exclaimed. “Maybe we could have a piece of history!”
“Please,” Mildew said in his usual sassy style. “I doubt they’d let anyone near a construction site. Plus, this is Disney we’re talking about, so they’d probably shoot you!”
“Indeed,” I added, dead serious. “I’m not going to waste valuable time going there. We’ve got Cape Canaveral coming up in a few hours.” The thought of me or any of the others possibly getting arrested for trespassing immediately came to mind. “Let me remind you all that even though we’re all having fun here, I’m spending my life savings to make this dream happen. You all have nothing to lose, but not me.”
Squiddly and Magilla clammed up immediately. I figured they knew what I was talking about: nobody else had any means of support. Hokey and his partner Ding-a-Ling only had their street smarts to get them out of jams. Lippy and Hardy were just struggling. While Magilla could simply go back to Peebles’ Pet Shop, it simply wasn’t a life. This was a ticket to a new life for them and I was not about to risk that for something stupid.
Breakfast, otherwise, was nothing special. The coffee was a little too strong for some of them, and some of the meals just weren’t up to par. Lippy, sitting opposite from me, wasn’t thrilled with the slightly-soggy pancakes, either. We still paid for the meal, though, and went on our way. At least Squiddly loved the bagels and lox.
To compensate for the lack of Disney in our lives, we made an unplanned stop at the Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area in Orange County. The area brings hunters, birdwatchers, campers, hikers, botanists, fishermen and wildlife enthusiasts together under one roof, and today all of the above were out enjoying themselves.
We took plenty of pictures of birds that morning, with bald eagles and kestrels hunting for their next meal, while herons and ibises, among others, hung out in the wetlands. We were also able to get on camera a group of wild turkeys congregating nearby, with Mildew and Hokey instantly regretting not bringing a shotgun—if only we had one.
“Monsters,” Loopy said with a smirk, although I am certain that, deep down, he would’ve wanted it.
The excursion turned out to be a good thing: the heavy showers came in a few miles after we got back onto Route 524. Better now than later.
“Oh, dear,” Hardy moaned. “That’s going to ruin our plans.”
“Aww, don’t sweat it, Hardy!” replied his optimistic friend, Lippy. “Better now than when we’re out on the boat, right?”
“If you say so,” the sour-flavored hyena moped. “I suppose it could have been worse. We could have been out in the water when—“
As if on cue, lightning struck a few hundred feet away from us, startling everyone but especially Hardy, who would’ve jumped into Lippy’s lap had the seat belt not prevented him from doing so—and yet, we all soldiered on past the rain and out of danger, and just in time.
The timing was perfect: the sun shone brightly on the Indian and Banana rivers, the first things one sees before entering State Road A1A from the north. Sandwiched between the two rivers is Merritt Island, home to the John F. Kennedy Space Center, known throughout the world for NASA’s Apollo space missions that eventually put man on the moon for the first time in history.
We stopped at the northernmost point of Florida’s Space Coast—the town of Cape Canaveral, where space tourism and beach tourism combine to provide an unforgettable experience. As we were on a mix of both pleasure and business, however, we immediately sought out a boat to rent for today’s underwater journey.
Once we secured one, we got to work loading our gear from the trailer into the boat. To avoid confusion and clutter, not only are the swim fins and masks hooked to the belt of the harness, our names are marked on the backs of the harnesses so we do not end up wearing someone else’s kit. We then started on our way, into the Atlantic Ocean.
As we continued on our way, we were able to get a glimpse of houses lined along the streets, not far from the Space Coast’s gorgeous beaches. These streets bear the names of past U.S. Presidents, the greats and not-so-greats among them: Washington Avenue. Adams. Jefferson. Eventually ending with Harding.
“Huh. Coulda sworn Van Buren would get his due,” Wally said before letting out his familiar, ear-pleasing laugh, noting the absence of his own street.
Further along the coast, the beaches were endless, although the places had different names. Cocoa Beach? Satellite Beach? Melbourne Beach, just a drive away from the city of Melbourne? It’s all good. You get to enjoy the feeling of sand between your toes.
I made certain to check my gear to ensure everything was operational. I took a breath from the regulator and found no problems. While everyone else was testing their tanks and regulators, I went into the cabin to plot out a course for ourselves using a nautical map.
Now, Cape Canaveral itself is not an ideal place for diving. Consulting the guidebook, I had two options: either explore a natural reef twenty miles out of Port Canaveral in an area called Pelican Flats, or explore the wrecked Dutch steamship Laertes, the Allied cargo vessel sunk by a German U-109 in May 1942. We couldn’t tackle both at once, as those two were a mile apart. As I looked further through the book to see if there were other reefs, it turned out there are plenty of other wrecks along the waters off A1A, some of them much, much older.
My mind was made up: we would be exploring a reef that day. …Or at least, I thought! Maybe some of the gang wanted a change of scene early. If there were other natural reefs along the coast, they were hard to come by. So, I told them we’d go to the reef.
After agreeing amongst ourselves on 90 feet for 40 minutes with a seven-minute decompression stop, we geared up for our journey into the depths in our familiar way: tanks secured to harnesses; harnesses worn and buckled securely; fins snugly worn; mask lenses spat-at-and-rinsed before donning; regulators being given a final check.

After a final safety briefing and the dropping of the anchor line, we were about to back-roll into the ocean when an Atlantic flyingfish flew up from the water and landed right on Breezly’s lap. We all had a terrific laugh over it, even after Breezly non-chalantly threw the fish back in the ocean, toward where the little fella had hoped to go.
“We could’ve had some lunch!” Lippy laughed. “Why’d you throw it back?”
“I didn’t want to punish him for one simple mistake!” Breezly replied with a warm smile to match his warm heart.
After that slight delay, we back-rolled into the water and slowly followed the anchor line down to the ocean floor, right next to where the reef was located.
Immediately the ten of us split up into several groups, giving us several times the opportunities for fun things to happen, though the feeling of water against one’s skin or fur is always a source of delight, regardless of the results of these dives.
One thing we noticed was that the reef was not a coral reef as some of us had hoped. Instead, we found plenty of short seagrass, an important source of nutrition for some of the aquatic life. The lack of coral gave me the first impression that the reef resembled a formation of mossy rocks and boulders one would perhaps find in the woods.
On the ocean floor nearby, Hardy swam close to what appeared to be a small, wide formation. It looked like it was a little smooth to the touch, unlike coral, so he brushed a few fingers along the length. The “formation” moved slightly, causing Hardy to jump back a little. The thing Hardy touched was a Florida sea cucumber, one of many such invertebrates found along Florida’s waters. To reassure Hardy, Lippy gently picked it up and showed its underside, with its many rows of tube feet, and the oral tentacles on the front side. Hardy nodded, having fully understood.
Meanwhile, Hokey and Wally, apparently not yet over their hunger pangs, scoped out a sizable group of lobsters congregating beneath a portion of the reef. With no net with which to catch them, and no way to bring them back, lest they carry it with them throughout the dive and even the decompression stop, they were at a loss. Even so, they were not about to be defeated.
Hokey beckoned for Loopy to swim over. Once Loopy joined the pair, Hokey pointed to the lobsters that were taking cover, then rubbed his belly to communicate everyone’s favorite language—food.
Loopy looked at Hokey quizzically, pointing up to the surface: did Hokey really intend to take his dinner up to the boat? When Hokey and Wally nodded in the affirmative, Loopy shook his head, not wanting anything to do with it.
Wally, however, had a plan, and he started to take off Loopy’s scarf, despite the wolf’s objections. Once Hokey got into the mess, Loopy had no chance. He then laid down one end of the scarf by the lobsters, waiting on one of them to take the bait. It didn’t take long, as one of them gripped the scarf.
Excitedly, Hokey pulled the scarf out, but the lobster, sensing what was happening, let go and rejoined the others.
Wally laid out the bait again, but before a lobster could hook onto it, Loopy, disgruntled, snatched the scarf away and swam far from them in order to put it back on. So much for lunch.
Meanwhile, our camera-octopus, Squiddly, located a gorgeous queen angelfish swimming alongside me. The somewhat fluorescent-looking colors on its body make it stand out from most of the other fish. Getting to experience seeing one up close is exciting enough, but when about a dozen more show up in the vicinity, you get worried about whether or not you actually loaded the film into the camera!
Some of the others were able to witness a loggerhead sea turtle swim by them. Mildew started off by following it, with Loopy instinctively joining his lupine companion. Soon, Lippy and Hardy were on the chase as well, though I do believe they just wanted to pet it. For the life of me, I couldn’t understand why they couldn’t just get it over with and form a conga line.
I followed Magilla and Breezly when they decided to stray a little from the reef. We had reached a sandy area where the two of them went fish-watching, without any of the others getting in the way.
We were able to witness a group of African pompanos on their way to the reef. While the juveniles prefer to go where the ocean currents lead them, adults prefer the coastline, in depths of up to 100 meters.
Outside of that, we were unable to find many fish of interest, outside of a solitary cocoa damselfish that swam right between the polar bear’s and gorilla’s bodies. The two of them turned around in unison just as the fish passed them; perhaps those two should have signed up for synchronized swimming instead.
We were about to rejoin the group when we saw what appeared to be a large school of fish—at least from a distance. As they drew ever closer, however, we realized they weren’t fish, but a group of about three dozen manta rays swimming towards us and above us. We quickly turned around, kicking our legs as quickly as we could, swim fins waving up and down, so that we could alert the others. We were going to get a chance to swim along with the rays.

Squiddly got in front of us so he could capture this epic scene. I positioned the other camera at a different angle, and we were on our way.
As we followed the group of rays, we were awestruck by the graceful movement of their pectoral fins. Taken individually, it’s a gorgeous sight, but to witness over thirty of them doing it was like viewing real-life natural art.
Mildew had the right idea when he swam the backstroke. The rays’ movements, combined with the limited light of the sun, made for the best viewing experience.
The mantas have a pair of horn-like cephalic fins on either side of their mouth. When the manta forages for food, these fins flatten in order to channel food into their mouths. At the surface they will feed on zooplankton such as shrimp and krill. At deeper depths such as these, they will feed on small or medium-sized fish.
As were were approaching a variety of fish, we had no choice but to let them be. Squiddly kept filming, yet kept a safe distance. As the rays fed on the sundry fish, I discovered, while editing this film for broadcast, that one of the rays may very have well feasted on that same cocoa damselfish Magilla and Breezly saw earlier. That’s the way life goes for an animal: one day you’re minding your own business, and the next day you’re gone. I would talk about life’s fleeting mortality, but that’s for some other show. It was time for us to ascend, anyway.
In deep dives, nitrogen starts to accumulate in the diver’s body. If a diver ascends like one usually would in a relatively shallow swimming pool, these nitrogen gases could turn into bubbles, thereby causing decompression sickness, which can be potentially fatal.
To help relieve the pressure, the diver’s ascent must be approximately thirty feet per minute. Depending on the details of the dive, a decompression stop may also be necessary fifteen feet from the surface. In this case, because of a 90-foot dive for 40 minutes, our wait was seven minutes. Even in dives at shorter depths, precautionary safety stops of three minutes may be required.
Because of the potential for danger, it is advised that dives are planned carefully. Use the most conservative figures when consulting dive tables. Know how much air you have, and do not plan lengthy dives if you don’t have the air to do a safety or decompression stop.
Squiddly Diddly, bless him, doesn’t have those disadvantages we mammals have. While we waited to ascend again, the good old octopus took the time to take one last tour of Pelican Flats, showcasing all its flora and fauna in its glory, however fleeting it may be. Who knows—maybe the fish Squiddly caught on camera could be the next to be swallowed up by a manta ray!
After the decompression stop, we made our final ascent to the boat, where we climbed out of the ocean, one at a time. Some of us laid back, gear still on, a little worn out from overstimulation.
“All those wasted years of trying to catch lambs,” Mildew chuckled. “Now this is living!”
“Who woulda thought? Swimming with manta rays!” Magilla said giddily, removing the gear one piece at a time and drying himself off.
“I think all of us needed that spark in our lives where we truly got to experience something special,” said I, stacking my fins and mask together as Squiddly climbed back onto the boat, the last to do so. “We’ve all forgotten how much of a thrill life could be. All we’ve been doing before is trying to survive.”
Lippy and Hardy, having known the feeling for years, nodded in agreement.
I slowly arose from the ledge and walked to the cabin. “All right. Let’s get this boat back, we get the gear back in, get our tanks refilled, and then finally we relax. I hear there are some good seafood places here.”
“How about a lobster?” Hokey said, smiling, eager for something exquisite.
“Me, too!” Wally added.
“Eh, we’ll see,” I said with a laugh, and the others were pretty much amused.
Once back on shore, we got the tanks refilled and all the gear loaded back onto the trailer. We bade farewell to Cape Canaveral and continued further south along A1A. Although Cape Canaveral isn’t a haven for divers, what we did see was good enough to warrant a visit, and the beaches are still very exquisite. If you would like to get to know NASA’s space program up-close and get wet and sandy—preferably not at the same time—set aside some time to visit the Space Coast.
Although we never got a chance to explore the Laertes shipwreck, a greater opportunity arose pre-dive when I learned of an early 18th-century Spanish ship, part of the doomed 1715 Treasure Fleet that transported goods and treasure from Spain’s territories back to the mainland. In our next episode, in which we travel to Florida’s Treasure Coast, we will explore one of those ships lost to a hurricane, the Urca de Lima, and perhaps come away with some treasure of our own.

Yes, this is morbid. but it is also an iconic photograph that everyone from David Bowie to Taylor Swift has used in their own art.
Evelyn Francis McHale
(September 20, 1923 – May 1, 1947) "The Most Beautiful Suicide"
On May Day, just after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note. "My fiance asked me to marry him in June, I wouldn't make a good wife for anybody, He is much better off without me ..." she wrote, then she crossed it out, folded it and placed it in her purse and went to the observation platform of the Empire State Building. Through the mist she gazed at the street, 86 floors below. She neatly folded her coat and placed it on the ground, along with her pocketbook containing the note and several family photos, then she jumped. In her desperate determination she leaped clear of the setbacks and hit a United Nations limousine parked at the curb. Across the street photography student Robert Wiles heard an explosive crash. Just four minutes after Evelyn McHale's death Wiles got this picture of death's violence and its composure.
Was her fiance better off without her? Hard to say, but Evelyn's then-fiance Barry Rhodes did die unmarried and childless in Melbourne, Florida on October 9th, 2007 after a lifetime of seeing his love depicted this way.

The Mall Offers Many Things For Those Who Love Beach-Dwelling
The Beach West Mall in West Melbourne, Florida is owned by Colony USA and is one of the largest malls in the state of Florida. This mall is a three-square-mile long structure which includes a huge flagship store called JC Penney. It also features a large auditorium space for large gatherings, a food court where you can eat, and a lobby that serve as both a store and a meeting space. It is also a two-story building with four levels.
The mall has been built with an arched roof, giving it the appearance like something out of the future. However, the construction itself is very contemporary, with cutting edge materials and designs. Many stores and restaurants are finding inside the mall, making it easier to get around. There is even a small cinema inside called the Palace Cinema. There are also over a hundred shops, restaurants, and other businesses inside. In total, this mall serves around eight hundred thousand people each day.
The Beach West Mall is a great place to shop for many things. It is one of the busiest malls in the city, housing many major retailers including JC Penney and Macy's. However, many visitors do not realize just how many great things are available in this mall. If you love shopping, but also have time to walk around, then you will love this mall.
One thing that is different about this mall besides the huge anchor store is the amount of smaller stores that are all spread out throughout the mall. Each of these stores is selling a type of product, from books to clothing to toys. While there are some major chain stores, there are also several of your favorite smaller independent stores. These include places like Pier 1 Imports, Blocket Creative Boutique, and Coastal Gallery. While it may seem like beach-related merchandise is all over the place, there is actually a lot of variety when it comes to the types of stores found in the Beach West Mall.
Those who love to shop will want to spend their time walking through the many streets of the mall looking at the vast selection of items for sale. Of course, those who enjoy a beach-themed merchandise will want to check out the large assortment of toys that can be found in the Beach West Mall. There is even a beach-themed tattoo parlor located within walking distance of one of the entrances to the mall. You could even take in a show at the Sandals Palace, which has been described as a true art museum.
Beach-themed weddings can be a very fun event to plan, especially if you hire a wedding planner who is familiar with the area. Not only will your planner to be able to get you a great location, they will also help you find the right dress for your big day. Beach weddings are often a big hit, since many couples want to choose locations that reflect their love for the sand and sea. While the mall is one of the most popular choices, it is not the only one with such a feature. As you search for a location, remember that it is important to keep your options open. If you have a difficult time deciding between two spots, ask for recommendations from family, friends or co-workers.

We must leverage all funds — federal, state, personal — into tasks that create jobs from building to excessive tech. Labor at each degree will spend regionally on eating places, barbers, little one care, rents, mortgages — a pattern that results in extra jobs. But it can not, shouldn’t go too quick. Motorhome rentals New Zealand Campervan Rental
Various apps that I have listed below are also very helpful. There are several toll roads on the North Island, which are advertised accordingly. The fee is paid online. As Germans, we also often have a very high security requirement, which can be a hindrance when buying used cars. If you are not a mechanic yourself or have a workshop you trust on site, you simply have to take the risk that you will catch a “scrap car”. Well-developed road networks and a dense network of excellently equipped campsites ensure a carefree holiday with the camper in New Zealand. The additional costs remain low thanks to self-catering, and everywhere you will meet nice and open-minded people like many other motorhome travelers in front of you. At CU
Tumblr media
In the center of the North Island, the monotony takes a break, because here you can deal with the volcanoes. A successful change from green nature. The cities on the North Island (apart from New Plymouth and the larger cities of Auckland and Wellington) offer little variety. They are purchased as new vehicles and only remain in the fleet for a few years. Mercedes Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter are used as models.
We were lucky that we had both dry weather here and also looked for an overnight stay that lay here.
refueled to return.
New Zealand is the perfect travel destination for road trip fans!
B do not drive through the Everglades (Florida).
This is where owner Earl expands his campsite, reveals where you will find the most Mighty campervan beautiful New Zealand's beach finds and serenades with you in the sunset.
Tumblr media
Campervan providers
You also have to stop when the traffic light is yellow. The only exception is if the sudden braking endangers other road users. This is the best way to experience the closeness to nature and at the same time travel flexibly and independently. Jucy Camper has small campers in the Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne rental locations - but also in New Zealand. You will recognize the vehicles everywhere by the color alone and are enjoying increasing international popularity! The rental is inexpensive. Then the impressions and experiences are definitely completely clear. Even if it is difficult for me, but you should simply look at each country individually and preferably not make any comparisons - because actually every country is beautiful in itself. I'm curious to see what opinion I get in Norway. Maybe it will be a bit New Zealand and a bit Canada;) Thanks for the hint, I will take a look at your new reports. The guaranteed buyback price is usually around 50% of the purchase value. However, if you can only get half of the price anyway, you should consider renting again. Most used campervans are rather small and spartan; Shower and toilet are rarely Britz campervan on board, which often excludes the vehicle from being approved for freedom camping. Camping furniture etc. must be brought from home or bought on site. a) The time of purchase and sale, because the supply and demand situation on the car markets fluctuates very seasonally.
How long does it take from Germany to New Zealand?
Flight time (flight duration) to Auckland - New Zealand. The flight time (flight duration) from Frankfurt / Main to Auckland in New Zealand is just under 24 hours with a stopover. During this period, over 18,000 kilometers are covered!
Every year in February you can visit the Art Deco Festival in Napier on the third weekend and experience a colorful street festival with music and costumes. The Buskers Festival is held in Christchurch for ten days in January. There jugglers from all over the world gather and you can experience a free street theater. Regardless of whether you choose your destinations spontaneously on site or want to plan your own route before the trip, the itravelNZ travel app offers a wide range of information about the top sights in the country, including travel descriptions and reviews. All distances are given in kilometers and the speeds in kilometers per hour. We have numerous motorhome rental companies on offer, a large selection of vehicles and many rental stations. Simply enter your travel dates in the search mask on the left. Find your suitable vehicle model and simply book your motorhome holiday online. Our team of experts will be happy to advise you. Are you looking for adventure, nature and tranquility far from tourism and noise?
