Heart To Heart | Ming Chapter
February 5, 2023
''What are you really doing back home?''
Ming's head swiftly glanced up from the scattered leaves on the ground to her younger brother, whose eyes were already on her. She furrowed her eyebrows. ''What do you mean, Woo?''
The unimpressed expression on his face was one she didn't get to meet often. ''You always let us know when you're coming home, this time you didn't. So, what's up with that? Is everything okay, Noona?''
The ''home'' Jungwoo referred to was their house in Daegu, the one she had surprisingly turned up to a few days earlier. Her youngest brother was correct about saying that she would always let someone of her small family know that she would be coming over. Whether it was through text or via a phone call, she'd always let someone know.
Ming should've known that someone would speak up about it, she hadn't expected that it would be the youngest of the family, however. Jungwoo never seemed like the observant type to her, he cared deeply for others, but normally he would wait for others to come to him.
Despite the nonchalant tone in his voice, the concern was visible on his face. Ming never liked making her loved ones worried about her, it made her feel guilty for some reason. She opted to lie and explain to him that there were no other intentions than just wanting to surprise her family, but she knew her brother would look right through her and tell her to not speak such lies to him.
''A lot of things happened back in Seoul and I need some time away, to be honest.'' It felt weird to her confiding to the youngest, the roles usually reversed.
Jungwoo nodded, his eyes not leaving hers. ''What happened? Something with the members?'' His question didn't come across as nosey or invasive, he was genuinely interested.
''No, everything's okay with the members,'' Ming assured him, ''it's just that…''
''There was this person that I really liked and they liked me back, but I made some mistakes that hurt their feelings. I went to talk to them and I apologized. I also told them that I loved them, but they, uh, told me that they think we shouldn't see each other anymore.'' She explained to him, describing the situation as vague as possible.
The younger man took her words in, happy his older sister gave in and told him her worries. ''Oh, that's not fun, especially cause you know they liked you back.''
A sarcastic chuckle left her lips. ''Yeah, my heart's been ripped apart.'' The contrast of the tone of her voice and the words she said made her brother not know what to say, struggling to understand if she could already joke about the incident or not.
''Well, you're a great person, so it's their loss anyway.'' He bumped their shoulders, a nervous laughter coming out. A small smile graced her face, her brother's support never failing to cheer her up. ''Thanks, Woo.''
''Things happen for a reason, you know? Whatever happens, let it happen.''

''Hi, bunny.'' Cheol walked into her room, watching her stare at the ceiling. Ming's vision didn't stray away from it, as if all her thoughts would go away if she looked at the leader.
He figured she had sunken deep into her own mind palette, her nose scrunched up and her eyes looked very intense. Cheol laid himself sideways next to her, watching her. ''You don't have to tell me what's going on in that pretty head of yours, but I think you could use some company.''
''I've been feeling kinda empty these days… like there's just something missing, you know? I haven't felt that in a while and it's just not a nice feeling.'' Ming spoke up after a minute of silence.
''At first, I thought I missed my family a lot, so I visited them, but it didn't go away. I started working out again, I tried writing lyrics, I picked up my guitar again, I went on a small road trip with Soomin… hell, I even went cycling with Mingyu, I've tried everything.''
Cheol listened attentively, nodding his head to every word she said. ''How long have you been feeling like this?'' He asked her.
Ming thought for a few seconds, trying to recall when the emptiness washed over her. ''A few weeks now, I think. A couple days before I drove down to Daegu.'' She answered him, not totally sure about the timeline.
''Oh, poor kid… that's quite a long time,'' he caressed her head, sympathizing, ''I'm sure once we start rehearsing and performing again, you'll feel better.'' Cheol reasoned.
The younger woman nodded, agreeing with him. ''Yeah, I think so too. It's been a long time since I've been able to properly perform with all of you.''
''It kinda sucks that I'm fully recovered now, but then Myungho gets himself injured.'' Ming sighed, being reminded that it's still 13 members performing instead of all 14 members.
Cheol nodded, sighing as well. ''I know, it seems like there is some kind of curse around us.'' He laughed, pulling his phone out and typing something.
''Yeah,'' Ming chuckled, ''but he'll recover quickly, his isn't as bad as mine was. He can go to rehearsals and watch, I couldn't even get out of bed.''
''We shouldn't compare injuries, Hao is super upset that he can't dance.'' Cheol semi-scolded her, looking away from his phone. ''Hey, uh, have you spoken with, uh, Canada?'' He wasn't sure whether she wanted to talk about the NCT rapper or not.
Ming shook her head. ''No, but it's fine,'' she sighed, ''I guess I should focus on myself now, you know? We're both very busy people, so it probably wouldn't have worked out anyway.'' She told him, her words comforting herself.
The leader looked at her in pity, mentally hitting himself for bringing the topic up. ''He's not too busy to spy on your Insta, though.'' He mumbled.
Ming hit his chest, making the both of them burst out laughing. ''He's never been very subtle, I guess.'' She had been preparing for the special live broadcast for Carats' birthday when she saw her and Minhyung's name trending on social media. It had given her an immediate heart attack, scared that pictures had gotten leaked, but she calmed down when she read the articles. Ming didn't know how to feel about the fact that Minhyung had been lurking on her page, it was a conflicting matter.
Cheol's phone vibrated against her mattress, making him check the notification he had received. ''Hey, uh, I gotta go,'' he sat back up, ''if there's anything, just call me, okay?'' He ruffled her hair, swiftly getting out of her room.
''Okay, bye bye!''
March 1, 2023
''Alright, we're gonna go out, because I can't watch you mope around in your bed all day any longer.'' Minghao pulled the covers from her body, making Ming quickly cover herself with her arms at the sudden cold.
''No~'' she whined, ''let me rot away here in peace.'' Ming wasn't in the mood to leave her room, rather isolating herself from the world.
Minghao sighed as he sat down next to her, caressing her cheek. ''Look, I get that you haven't been feeling your best, but all I'm asking is just one hour of your time.'' He simply wanted her to get out of the dorm and take in some fresh air.
''Rehearsals are starting again soon, I'll go out then.'' Ming reasoned.
The Chinese man shook his head. ''Come on, Yerimie! I'll buy you food!'' He tried to bribe her, knowing that promising her food would be his best chance at getting her up from her bed.
He could see her contemplating his words, taking a few moments to think. ''Okay, but you have to give me anything I want.'' She slowly got out of her bed, wanting to change into something else than her pajamas.
Minghao adamantly nodded his head, delighted he could convince her. ''Of course, let me know when you're ready.'' He exited her room, giving her some privacy while she got out of her clothes.
It had been quite cold in Seoul from what she gathered, opting for baggy jeans, a gray sweater, a thick jacket and a white puffy hat to keep her head warm. Ming already felt her mood lift up a bit as she changed into her new clothing, maybe going out with Minghao wasn't such a bad idea.
As soon as Ming stepped out of her room, the two made their way downstairs and into the night life of Seoul. They stopped at several street food trucks and seemed to be making their way towards the Han River, where they would calmly enjoy their food and the beautiful visuals.
They had settled themselves against the railing, admiring the sight of the river and the bright stars that appeared in the sky. ''They have fried chicken in the little shop, you want me to get some?'' Minghao suggested, tilting his head towards the convenience store nearby.
The question brought her back to her first date with Minhyung at Han River, where they leaned against the tree while drinking coke and eating their ramen, and fried chicken from that exact same store. ''Uh, I'm alright, thanks.''
''Well, I'm going to get some myself, I'll be right back.'' With that he left and walked to the small shop, not putting much pace behind his steps.
Ming's attention fell back on the river in front of her, leaning her arms on the railing and watching the stars and Seoul lights reflect on the water. Her mind drifted to the events of the past weeks: going back home, supporting her members at Music Bank, celebrating Carats' birthday and her talk with Cheol.
A weird feeling bubbled inside of her, she couldn't explain it and it scared her a little. Maybe it was a sense of realization of where the emptiness came from. Deep inside her heart and mind she knew what the missing puzzle piece was, but she wasn't ready to admit that to herself yet. She wanted to spare herself from the pain it would come with, avoiding her feelings and thoughts had always been her coping mechanism.
During hard times, she wishes she could call up her mom and have her tell Ming what to do. There were many people she could call and who would be happy to give her useful advice, but the strengthening words of a mother could not be matched by anyone else. She would tell her daughter to take it slow, to take life as it is and to prioritize herself.
Her mind returned back to the present as she could hear Minghao's footsteps approach, making her scratch her throat and fix her posture.
''You called me Mark.''
Unlike she thought, it wasn't Minghao that had been creeping up on her. Ming quickly turned around, met with the young man she could recognize anywhere despite him being completely covered, so he was unrecognizable to everyone else.
Her eyes widened, looking around in search of her member. ''What are you doing?''
''You've never called me that.'' Minhyung ignored her question. He took few steps forward, so he was standing right in front of her.
Ming continued glancing around him, hoping no one was witnessing the moment. ''We're in public, are you fucking crazy?''
''I don't really care about that right now, Yer. I just- I want to say something to you, whether you want to listen to me or not, is your choice.'' She could see the cold breaths leave his mouth, smoking up in the cold air.
Minhyung continued in her silence. ''First, I want to apologize for what happened at Music Bank. I shouldn't have approached you like that and especially not after what happened at the dorm,''
''I've been wanting to talk to you about what happened then, but I figured you just wanted me to leave you alone, which I understand. But that's not what I want to tell you right now,''
''When you came to our dorm, I had just gotten off a 13-hour flight and I was beyond tired, and fans were being invasive at the airport, and all I wanted was some sleep, and then you showed up and I- I don't know. You started saying all that stuff about Yeonjun and that you were in love with me, and all I could think about was the image of you two kissing,''
He took a deep breath, the words coming out too fast for him. ''When I woke up, I realized what I had actually asked of you and what that meant for us, and I fucked up. I don't want to not see you anymore, I don't want to pretend that I don't know you, I want- I want, ugh, fuck…''
''What do you want, Minhyung?'' Ming asked him, her eyes fully focused on him.
His gaze fell upon her, the pair properly looking at each other for the first time in what felt like a lifetime. ''I want you. I want to kiss you. I want to go on walks with you. I want to be with you.'' He answered her question, almost out of breath.
Ming's eyes welled up, the tone in which he spoke was something she hadn't heard from him before. ''You- you what?''
Minhyung's left hand cupped her cheek, his eyes not leaving hers. ''I'm in love with you, Yer,'' her tears must have had an effect on him as his voice came out hoarse and she could see tears forming, ''I don't think I am, I know I am.''
''If you want to, I would like for us to start again. We'll start again and we'll do it better, we'll do it differently this time.'' He added, his free hand grabbing her arm.
Ming looked down at the floor, multiple tears falling down. ''Please tell me that you're serious, that this isn't some kind of cruel joke you're doing.'' She hated how desperate she sounded, but it couldn't be helped.
''I mean it, I'm being serious.'' Minhyung couldn't fight the urge anymore and wrapped his arms around her, his hand resting on the back of her head.
The two remained like that for a few minutes, reveling in the comfort each of them brought to one another. It was Ming who broke the silence first. ''How did you even know I was here?''
Minhyung chuckled at her question, wiping his hand over his dried tears. ''One of your members might have given me a scolding.''
She pulled away from him, her hands still holding onto him. ''What do you mean?'' Ming raised her eyebrow.
''Don't worry about it now, I needed it.'' He brushed it off, pulling her back in.
Ming was still overwhelmed by the sudden turn of events as she rested in Minhyung's arms, holding him close to her so he wouldn't magically disappear. The weird feeling had somehow found its way out of her body and she felt at peace.
Her puzzle was complete.

The members were all over the dorm. Most of them were still sitting at the dining table while others had taken a seat on the couch or on the floor, enjoying the time after their meal and waiting for the clock to finally strike midnight. They had had their fair share of alcohol already, but not enough to call them drunk just yet.
Minnie had just gotten done putting down the dishes she had offered to bring into the kitchen when Wonwoo came in, carrying a few extra bowls that weren't needed anymore. He was clinging onto a few plastic ones that once held rice with his mouth, making the girl chuckle as she eyed him once he stepped in. She reached out to free his lips, taking them into her own hands before throwing them into the trash underneath the sink.
"It wouldn't hurt to just go twice, you know?" She smiled.
He shrugged, "It's quicker that way."
A comfortable silence fell over the room as Minnie emptied the plates of their last bits of food before putting them into the dishwasher. The '96 Liner was leaning on the counter next to her, his arms crossed, watching her every move. She felt his following eyes on her, making her stop in her tracks and turn towards him,
"What?"
An awkward chuckle tumbled from the girl's lips while she continued her chore, "Yeah... I'm not nervous," she gulped, "Why should I be?"
The sudden soft touch on her elbow made her turn her head,
The sudden soft touch on her elbow made her turn her head,
"Hm?" Her high-pitched voice made Wonwoo laugh, he just couldn't hold it back anymore. "What?" The slight annoyance in her voice was as clear as day.
"Just admit it," he assured her, pulling her slightly closer once she didn't have anything in her hands anymore.
She tried to shrug his grip off of her, but he was obviously stronger than her, "I don't know what the hell you're talking about," trying to get back to the task in front of her, but the rapper wasn't letting go.
"Minnie-"
"How can you be so chill about this?!" She finally snapped, making a smug smile appeared on the older one's lips. "Of course, I'm nervous." He motioned for her to speak more quietly, reminding her of the other people in the dorm. "I'm so fucking anxious right now. But how can you not be?! Do you know how infuriating that is?!"
"That I'm not freaking out like you are?"
"Yeesss," she whined, letting her head drop to his shoulder, feeling it vibrate as Wonwoo chuckled, his hands coming up to brush over her back, trying to comfort her. "How are you so calm about this?"
Right from the beginning of their relationship, Minnie and Wonwoo talked about how they would break the news to the rest of the guys. They knew it might not come as much of a surprise to people like Minghao and Seungcheol, since they had their fair share of talks with them, but the rest of the members couldn't have a clue.
Different ideas came up. Just to tell them as if it wasn't something big was the one Minnie could think of. Kissing in the middle of the practice room was something that Wonwoo had in mind. Somehow they both agreed on a surprise for the guys after reminiscing about some events from the past, excited for the reaction they would get once the others would finally find out. Since the female member wanted to take things slow and not let others into the relationship, the rapper knew it would take some time and by the end of November the two settled that they think it would be a good time for the surprise, but Wonwoo had an even better idea and told her about the New Year's kisses he had seen in the movies Minnie loved oh so much. It seemed like a good idea for a surprise. Up until the day of the actual surprise. Because suddenly, the girl's nerves got the best of her.
"Why shouldn't I be calm?" He wondered, still caressing her back when she raised her head to meet his eyes again, "It's not like we're letting the world know. It's just the guys."
She sighed, "I know, but still..." her gaze fell to the floor as Wonwoo's hands found hers, holding onto them, making her eyes focus on them.
"If you're not sure about this, then we don't have to do it. You know that, right?"
"I know!" She quickly stopped him before he could say anything, giving his hands a quick squeeze and looking up again, "I know... I just... I don't know..." Her eyes travelled down again, gazing at their intertwined fingers while playing with his. "I am sure about it," she spoke quietly all of a sudden as if she was scared anyone else could hear her, "I'm just... a little scared, I think."
Not trying to pressure her and put her into an uncomfortable situation, he left her in her own little world and continued in a tone similar to hers, "What are you scared about?"
Minnie took a deep breath, her fingers stopping to play with his. She sighed, "Their reaction, I guess?" Then raised her head again, "Or maybe not their reaction but where this puts us. Letting them in on this is one step further into this commitment. And what if they're not happy about it. What if they're against it. What if they start throwing reasons at us why this is a bad idea and we should stop. Or what if they don't-"
Her rant was interrupted by the rapper's hands grabbing her face to make her look him straight into his eyes.
"Are you listening to yourself right now?" He questioned her, a soft smile playing on his lips, "So many what ifs are coming out of your mouth. You're overthinking this. I understand why and once again, I want to remind you that we don't have to-"
"No!" She stopped him by placing her hands on top of his that were still cupping her cheeks, "No. I want to. I want this and I want them to know."
And within the blink of an eye, Wonwoo held a proud smile on his lips that, within the next moment, was covered by Minnie's lips. He pulled her in, placing his lips onto hers softly, devouring her taste just like he had been doing for all these months.
As soon as the couple pulled apart again, a shy grin made itself seen on the female's lips. She bit her bottom one, hoping to hide it as well as possible, but the '96 Liner had already gotten a glimpse of it, smiling to himself now as well.
His right hand left her cheek to run across the side of her face, pushing back some of her hair, his eyes following his soft touches before interlocking gazes with her again.
"I love you," he let her know, noticing the slight blush that immediately coloured her cheeks, "That's all that matters. And whatever the guys are gonna say won't change that." His assuring words made the girl let out a big amount of air as she nodded. "And you know they won't hate this. They would never be against this."
"I know, I know," she whispered, looking deeply into his eyes, "I love you too." The three words they had gotten so accustomed to within the last week ever since Wonwoo let them fall from his lips first, suddenly didn't feel so foreign anymore. She didn't feel pressured to say them - she never did. But suddenly it felt more natural than before. Like it was meant to be.
"Where the hell are Minnie and Wonwoo?"
Their little moment in the kitchen was interrupted by the loud voice of the performance unit leader echoing through the dorm. They pulled apart at the right moment, just before the head of mentioned member popped around the entrance of the kitchen.
"There you are!" He sounded relieved, "You coming? We only have a few minutes left." The girl turned around and nodded towards him, making him grin widely and before they could say anything more, he was gone just as quickly as when he showed up.
"Come on," Wonwoo slung his arm around her shoulder to guide her out of the room and into the living room where the members had gathered in front of the TV and around the dining table, ready to grab a glass of champagne, beer or apple juice each that Minnie had prepared at the beginning of the evening. The girl caught the knowing eyes of Minghao from the other side of the room, who sent her a surprised look when he saw the close proximity in which they entered the room, but she only gifted him a quick smile in return making him chuckle and mouth a little 'cute' before putting his focus somewhere else.
"Alright, guys," Seungkwan announced, "Only three minutes left!"
Minnie reached to get one glass of champagne for herself and one glass of beer to hand it over to Wonwoo, who accepted it thankfully, letting his hands rest by his side, knowing that only in a few minutes he wouldn't have to hide his adoration for the woman next to him anymore.
"Then let's go on the balcony, what are you guys waiting for!" The female ushered them out quickly making the ones around the TV jump up to their feet, and rush over to the table before collectively gathering on the balcony - thank god it was big enough.
Excitedly, the entire group stood hurtled together close to the railing, with Seungkwan on his phone, ready to count down once there were only a few seconds of the year left.
Looking out into the night sky, the skyline of Seoul, Minnie's eyes were fixed on the few fireworks that were already up in the air while muffled noises from the streets filled the cold December air. Even though it was loud, she was able to ignore every sound that hit her drum. She looked up, losing focus and forgetting the here and now, falling into a trance as she reminisced about the past year.
A lot of ups, and sadly a lot of downs. The year started well with their world tour that was quickly ruined thanks to the virus, making it unable for her to visit her family and finally perform in front of her grandparents who had never seen her on a live stage before. They were forced to lock themselves into their homes, not meet any friends, cover their faces even more than they already had to, and still keep up a positive attitude for their fans.
But so many good things happened. They prepared two new albums that went off great. Two albums that were probably Minnie's favourite so far. They were able to have another Caratland, even though it had to be moved to be an online event - but at least they were able to hold it in some kind of way. But something even better happened. The best happy 'accident' of that year. A relationship. A good, no scratch that, wonderful, amazing, breathtaking relationship. With another member. If you had told Minnie three years before that one day she'd be romantically holding hands, even kissing one of the members romantically and cuddling with them in the comfort of their childhood home one day, she would have laughed into your face. And now she was doing that exact thing.
Wonwoo was the best thing that could've happened to her. Even after just three months, she was sure of that. He had always been there for her. Thinking back to their pre-debut days, he was one of the very few ones she was comfortable enough to sit next to in complete silence. And that didn't change. After her heartbreak a year before, he was the only one she had let stay in the room for longer than just a few minutes. He managed to get her to do even just small things while being curled up in her bed. But there were so many other small gestures that he had done over the years, things that she had been too oblivious to notice, but now that they were together and he continued doing them, she finally realised it - and maybe because Wonwoo explained to her that he did most of them in the hopes of her noticing...
He made her happy. Very happy even. These are the words that she would tell her mum whenever she called. I can't explain it, but he makes me happy.
But it was so much more than that. She loved that man. She loved him. She truly did. He made her forget all the bad from the past. He motivated her to be the best version of herself that she possibly could be. She missed that feeling. But Minnie doesn't see Wonwoo as a replacement for that. Because he's oh so much more. It would take more time to find out just what exactly he meant to her, she knew that, but she couldn't wait to find every little piece of that puzzle to complete it.
"10 seconds left, guys!" Dokyeom shouted out loud after taking a quick glance at Seungkwan's phone, earning him a slap on the chest since the younger one was about to announce it.
The female member snapped out of her daydream and straightened her back. The gentle touch of a hand against her own made her jump slightly and look to her left, where she found her boyfriend already looking at her with a big grin on his lips. She couldn't help but to copy his facial expression proudly.
"Ready?" He raised an eyebrow, leaning in just a bit closer. Minnie's smile widened as she nodded and whispered, "Yeah."
"5!" The guys started counting down together loudly.
"4!" Wonwoo turned her towards him, so they'd be chest to chest.
"3!" Minnie could feel her heart pumping so hard, she was scared it would come up her throat at some point.
"2!" Thank god they were on the far right of the group, and all eyes were on the lit-up night skyline.
"One." The couple whispered to each other, the smirks still as prominent on their lips.
And in one quick motion, Wonwoo pulled the girl closer with a grasp on her waist, making her place her free hand on his chest. Their lips met each other welcoming the new year while the cheers of the other guys filled their ears. Before they knew it, the cheers suddenly became louder and turned into high-pitched screams.
"OH MY GOD!"
"WHAT?!"
"GUYS?!"
"WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Minnie felt a push on her shoulders and as soon as he freed her lips from Wonwoo's and opened her eyes, she found a Dino with his mouth open wide looking straight at the couple. Behind him, the rest of the guys, with the exact same facial expression when they suddenly erupted in another round of cheers as they cornered the two with quick steps, trying to get into a bad kind of group hug that kinda worked. The guys started jumping excitedly, spilling the rest of their drinks onto the floor, but at that moment they couldn't care less.
As soon as they were free again, the voice of every member rang through their ears, all messily speaking over each other. As they slowly died down, one voice spoke up loudly again,
"When the hell did that happen?!" Mingyu gawked at the two, still unable to process what really happened.
Minnie smiled shyly, her hand finding Wonwoo's and she tried to hide her smile behind his arm, but before either one of them could say something, Jeonghan bet them to it.
"No, no, no," he stepped, "Wait. Is it real, though?" He wondered, making Hoshi appear next to him,
"Yeah, this is a prank, right? You didn't actually kiss."
"Huh?" The couple questioned them at the same time, "Why would this be a prank?" Minnie continued their thought.
"It was fake, right? Like when they fake kiss sometimes with their thumbs between their lips," the performance unit leader explained a little too well, earning himself questioning looks from the couple.
"No," Wonwoo chuckled, "We're together."
"But like actually together?" Jeonghan teased, "Like together together?"
"Jesus," the female dancer cursed under her breath, shaking her head as she chuckled, while the '96 Liner nodded proudly with a smile,
"Yeah. Together together."
"For how long?!" Jun suddenly shouted, catching everyone off guard with the volume of his voice.
Minnie grinned, "Since September."
"Sep-?!" He wanted to finish his exclaim but was too shocked and just took a few steps back, disappearing behind the group that was still gawking at them while his voice could still be heard, "Freaking September."
"Why didn't you tell me?!" Mingyu slapped Wonwoo's shoulder, tapping Minnie's as well, just slightly more gentle.
"We just did," the rapper shrugged.
"But why not tell me earlier?! We're roommates, you idiot!"
"You're roommates with him," Woozi suddenly stepped out, "I share my entire fucking studio with that girl and I didn't hear of this even once," letting his eyes travel to the female member, stopping to glare at her, "You've got a lot of explaining to do, I hope you know that." To which the girl sheepishly lowered her head and nodded.
"Okay, BUT," Seungkwan clapped his hands and stepped between the group and the couple, creating a protective barrier, "How about we congratulate them first. Aaand be happy for them. Huh?"
"ON IT!" Dokyeom raised his hand proudly before running over to the couple, almost knocking them over as he wrapped his arms around them tightly, hugging them closely, letting Dino and Seungkwan join as well.
"Quick question," Mingyu interrupted once again, "Can I just ask why some seem unfazed by this. Like a little too unfazed. Coups?" But the leader just looked at him with his arms crossed in front of his chest, not letting any emotion be able to get read off his face, "Myungho? Shua?"
"We already knew," Minghao answered, smiling to himself when he watched his fellow '97 Liner's reaction.
"You-" He stopped himself and took a deep breath before letting out a salty chuckle, "You knew. Of course, you knew. Why did they know?" Directing the question towards the new couple next to him. But he didn't even let them try to answer his question, "You're telling me, you'd rather let Myungho and Shua into this, than me? Or Woozi? Are you serious? I can't believe this." And left the balcony immediately after.
"Mingyu!" Minnie tried to shout after him but he just waved her off.
A comforting hand was placed on her shoulder, "Don't worry," Seungkwan softly spoke to her, brushing over her arm, "He's just sulking."
"Yeah..." Wonwoo sighed with a chuckle before leaving the group and going into the dorm after his best friend.
One after the other, each member went back inside, some sending the girl funny looks, like Hoshi and Jeonghan who let her know that they had their eyes on them, making her laugh or Vernon who wiggled his eyebrows, making her want to throw something at him. Joshua and Minghao showed her some thumbs up and assuring smiles, making her feel at least somewhat good about her decision.
There was one person though that didn't react. One very important person. And it just made her anxiety rush through her body-
"Sooooo," Jun jumped next to her, captivating her in a side hug by throwing his arm over her shoulder and dragging her towards the living room, "How did it happen. When did it happen? Did he make the first move? Did you?! No, it must've been Wonwoo, right? How did he do it? Romantically? Or like cool?"
-
A good 15 minutes, a whole lot of questions and a whole lot of answers later, Jun seemed satisfied enough with the story that Minnie put out in front of him. Other members joined them at some point, wanting to hear a few bits of the story as well, listening attentively while lovingly gazing at their female dancer. With all their eyes and ears on her, Minnie knew that the worries she had had, hadn't been necessary. And while some had left her body throughout the course of the night, a few were still sitting at the bottom of her stomach.
She was once again in her own world, blocking out what the guys around her were doing when she heard someone calling out for her. Looking up, she found Seungcheol at the door to the balcony, nodding for her to follow him. And suddenly that small leftover amount of anxiety didn't feel so small anymore.
She excused herself from the group, got up from the couch and walked over to the door, her eyes travelling over the balcony, stopping at the leader's silhouette that was leaning on the railing. With one careful step after the other, the girl got closer and closer to the leader, coming to a halt right next to him, taking after him and resting her elbows on the railing, the cold January wind blowing through her hair.
The two spent a good thirty seconds in silence before Seungcheol finally filled the silence that was slowly getting too much for Minnie.
"Are you happy?"
His question made her turn her head to her right to look at him. He kept his gaze straight ahead, so her eyes were met with his side profile. She could see the last few city lights glimmering in his eyes, lighting up the dark orbs she had grown to find so much comfort in.
A shy smile made its way to her lips as she turned to look back ahead, unsure of how to face him when answering.
"Very," she told him softly, "Very happy."
He nodded but didn't give a verbal answer, making her only even more nervous than she already was. And then there was it again. Another silence they fell into. Minnie couldn't bare it any second longer and just let it out.
"I'm sorry." Her sudden confession made S.Coups turn to her in confusion. She continued, "I'm sorry that we didn't tell you. And I'm sorry that this happened. I'm sorry it happened like that, we didn't plan it- I mean how could you ever plan something like this, but I'm really really sorry, I swear, Cheol. I didn't mean for this to happen, I-I don't know-"
"Minnie, stop." His voice made her stop her rambling. Within a millisecond she was quiet.
The leader lowered his head and shook it, worrying the girl just a little more.
He sighed, "Stop saying sorry," he turned towards her, "You shouldn't be sorry for falling in love."
The female member looked at her fingers, noticing she didn't have any nail polish left that she could pick at. "I... I thought you might be mad about it... sorry," she only let out a whisper.
Cheol straightened his back and took a step closer to her, turning to rest his back against the railing, crossing his arms in front of his chest as he does so often. "Why would I be mad at your happiness?"
Minnie changed her position to lean onto her side, "Not at my happiness, but... this relationship."
"But that is your happiness, isn't it?" He looked down at her, raising his eyebrows with a soft smile on his lips.
"Yeah, I guess so," she shyly chuckled once she met his eye. There was a question tickling the tip of her tongue that she just couldn't let go, "You didn't seem too surprised earlier. Why?"
"What? You think I don't know you?" He teased her, "You think I wouldn't know my sister after ten years of knowing her? Are you serious?"
"Alright, alright," she giggled, placing her hand on his arm. "Wow," she let out a huff of air, "Ten years already?"
Seungcheol's eyes never left her smile. He analyzed every inch of her face, every wrinkle he noticed, every little detail he could remember.
He nodded proudly, "This year will be our 10th anniversary. You came to Pledis in 2011, shortly after Hoshi."
She hummed in agreement, looking through the floor-length windows into the apartment, chuckling at the antics of the other members who seemed to be very invested in Wonwoo at that moment, when she felt a pair of eyes on her the entire time, making her turn her head. She interlocked gazes with Cheol.
"What?"
He smiled, "It's good to see you so happy again," she blushed, "To see that little twinkle in your eyes again," he teased her, reaching out pretending to poke her eyes, making her laugh out loud and turn her head away,
"Oh, shut it!" She pushed his hand away from her.
He chuckled, "I'm serious. You lost it for a while."
"Well," Minnie spoke softly, "The break up was pretty hard."
"I know... that's why I'm so much happier though that you found Wonwoo. That you finally gave into your feelings."
"What do you mean?" The girl was slightly confused but kept a smile on her lips.
S.Coups scrunched his eyebrows, "Wonwoo didn't tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
"The talk that we had."
"Oooh," Minnie nodded, "Yeah, yeah. Oh god... yeah...that talk. Jesus," she shook her head with a chuckle. As if a lightning bulb went on in her head, her eyes lit up, "That's how you knew! That's why you didn't react! You idiot," she slapped his arm, "'I've known you for ten years'," she mocked his voice, "Fuck that! You knew it because Wonwoo basically told you." She kept on softly punching him, only making him laugh and capture her hands into his own.
"I also just know you very well," he told her, looking straight into her eyes but she just sarcastically nodded,
"Mh, sure."
He dropped her hands as he shook his head and dishevelled her hair a little with a smirk on his lips before placing his arm around her shoulder. Her arms found their way around his torso immediately, capturing him into a tight hug, and burying her head into his shoulder.
"I'm very happy for you," he whispered into her ear, "And I wish you nothing but the best, you know that right?"
Minnie nodded, suddenly feeling her throat tightening and tears prickling in her eyes. Why the fuck now?, she thought to herself
"I really want this to work for you guys. The two of you are insanely important to me," he let go of her, wanting to look her in the eyes again, but she didn't let go, confusing the leader slightly. "Minnie?" Only when he heard her sniff, he knew what was going on.
"Are you crying?" He wondered, trying to get her off him by pushing her away and finally managing to free himself from her grip. "Why are you crying, Minnie?" His eyes soften as soon as they came to sight with her red ones, lifting his hands to grasp her cheeks and wiping away her tears.
"I don't know," she sniffed, "I just thought you might react differently and I know how difficult this might be for the group and the company and how everything could go wrong and we-"
"Hey hey hey," he shushed her, pulling her in again, wrapping one arm around her body and placing one hand on the back of her head while she was clinging onto him like her life depended on it. "It's all gonna be fine. Don't worry about that. The group is, as you can see, extremely happy for you. Don't feel bad about any of this. Okay? No one should be able to take this happiness away from you. And... the company... leave that up to me. I have to worry about that. I'll talk to them."
The girl shook her head and pushed herself off the leader, "You shouldn't have to worry about anything that concerns me. Or Wonwoo and I in that matter."
S.Coups chuckled, brushing his hand covered by the sleeves of his hoodie over her cheeks again to wipe off the tear stains, "I'll always be worried about you. Doesn't matter because of what," he confessed, "And not just as a leader, but as an older brother as well."
"Stoooop," Minnie whined, "You're gonna make me cry even more," but chuckled, making the '95 Liner laugh as well. He pulled her in one last time, maybe hugging her a little too tightly, but it seemed perfect at that exact moment.
"I love you, Minnie," he whispered into her ear, making her smile brightly, her eyes still filled with the last tears she had to let you.
She gave him a tight squeeze back, "I love you too, Cheol," snuggling into his sweater as deeply as she possibly could.
But of course, the moment was too pure and too beautiful to last any longer.
"You know you'll have to introduce Wonwoo as your boyfriend to mum and dad as well." Minnie could hear the devilish smirk playing on the leader's lips.
She sighed, "You're ruining the moment."
But he didn't stop there. "And to Seungmin."
"Seungcheol!" The girl exclaimed, pushing the man away from her body at the mention of the oldest Choi brother.
S.Coups laughed out loud, holding onto his chest, "He'll hate him."
"Stooop!!" As much as she wanted to sound completely annoyed, she couldn't help but smile at the thought, remembering the eventful day it was when Hanbin first met dad Choi and Seungmin. "You talk to him first, please," Minnie tried to pull off her best puppy eyes, getting a hold of the '95 Liner's hands, playing cute. Coups tried to shrug off her grip, laughing at her antics, "Forget it! Wonwoo's your boyfriend, not mine!"
"Seungcheol!"
But he just continued cackling at her misery, knowing what was ahead of her.
-
Some members had already left, tired and ready for bed. Some others were still in the dorm, just like Dokyeom, Vernon and Dino that were dozing on the couch.
The oldest ‘97 Liner decided he had enough and got up to get himself a cup of coffee from the kitchen, leaving the two in the living room as the rest of the members had gathered on the balcony once again. The maknae left shortly after, disappearing to his floor to go to bed, saying goodnight to the only member left in the living room.
From outside, Minnie stepped in, having had enough of the larger group and needing to get somewhere quieter.
The second youngest knew this was the perfect opportunity to go after one of his favourite hobbies including Minnie - teasing her in every way possible. And maybe the larger amount of alcohol he had in his body had a slight effect on the situation as well.
He had been eyeing the couple from his position on the sofa which gave him a perfect view of them and the other members around them.
He raked himself up from his slouched position, “Alright,” he got Minnie’s attention as she stopped in her tracks, clearly tired with the only thing on her mind being sleep. “Soooo… how is he?”
“Hm?” She hummed in confusion, coming a bit closer.
“How is he?”
“He? Wonwoo?” She wondered, to which he nodded, “Yeah… great. He’s doing well. Why don’t you ask him that yourself?” Thankfully she was too tired to wonder too much why on Earth he would ask her a question like that in the middle of the night.
Vernon scoffed, “I don’t mean how he’s doing. I meant how is he as a boyfriend.”
“Oooh,” she chuckled, “then say it like that, Jesus,” giving his head a little slap before sitting down on the other length of the couch. “He’s a good boyfriend, obviously. I wouldn’t stay with him if he wasn’t.” The '97 Liner had noticed the younger one's silence throughout the night and was happy to hear him speak now.
The rapper shrugged, “I don’t know, your first one was kinda questionable so you never know.”
“Dude, you know Wonwoo! Don’t pretend like you don’t know him, you idiot!” Minnie laughed, making him chuckle slightly to himself.
“I might know him, I might not.”
The female member looked at him in confusion, “What?”
“You know what I don’t know about him though?” He changed the subject quickly, ignoring her question completely. Vernon sat up straighter and for himself ready by putting both hands up, palms together, looking straight at Minnie. “Listen, just say stop, okay?”
“Huh?” She wondered while he already started pushing his hands apart, creating an empty space between them.
“Just say stop,” he repeated.
“Ver-“
“Seriously?” He suddenly wondered stopping slightly, slowing down the speed at which his hands were going apart from each other, “Seriously?”
“Vernon what-“
“You can’t be serious.” Stopping completely when his hands were a shoulder length apart.
The dirty-minded part in Minnie’s brain should’ve struck immediately but for some reason, she was so confused. Normally, she would get dirty jokes quicker than anyone else, heck even things that weren’t supposed to be dirty, her brain would register as them being violently inappropriate.
Vernon sighed, “Minnie, listen.”
“I’m listening,” she closed her eyes and sighed with a smile, “I’ve been listening the entire time.”
“Good good, but listen. I’m having my Schmidt moment here.” She could tell by then that Vernon most definitely had more to drink than her, explaining the state he was in. “Listen,” he repeated, “Us boys. We know each other well. Very well even. But…,” he took a second before continuing, “we don’t know everything about each other. But as your best friend-“
“You’re not my best friend.”
“As your best friend.” Minnie chuckled. “It is my duty, knowing you’re in good hands and that you’re happy. I promise, I won’t judge, even if he’s just like that,” taking his two forefingers and keeping them two inches apart from each other.
“Vernon, what the hell are you talking about?”
He nodded, “Okay, okay, so he’s not like that? Good. That wouldn’t be that satisfying I can imagine. I mean, I can’t- but, you know I-“
“Oh my God,” Minnie sighed out loud. Her hands came up to grasp her hair and brush it away from her face. She realised what that was all about. His ‘Schmidt moment’, the hands, the ‘guys know everything about each other’, 'satisfying' - that word always struck the dirty-minded nerve in her brain.
“You’re an idiot. You actually are an idiot,” she looked him dead in the eye.
“That’s not very nice… to call your best friend an idiot, you know?” He gazed at her perplexed.
“Vernon, you’re-“
“Anyways!” He interrupted her, getting back into the stand he was in earlier: hands in front of him, palms together, eyes on her. “I’m gonna start over and you’re gonna tell me when to stop. I promise I won’t judge. I’m just looking out for you, you know? We don’t want you to get hurt by the third leg he’s hiding,” he mumbled the last part but the girl still caught it making her hide her face behind her hands and chuckle in embarrassment.
“Vernon!”
“Just say stop,” and so he started again. His hands slowly grew apart from each other, creating a bigger gap between his palms.
“Just say stop,” he repeated every few millimetres, hoping to remind her, but Minnie continued looking at him with her arms crossed, biting her bottom lip in amusement.
“Ver-“
“Are you serious now?!” He stopped his hands, glancing up at her, only finding her somewhat straight facial expression, making him continue.
“I’m not telling you, this is ridiculous.”
“You’re ridiculous!” He continued, “This can’t be!” His hands grew more and more apart, “Stop fucking lying, Minnie.”
A little more. "Okay... that's... that's impressive, I must say."
The female member shook her head with a chuckle.
He stopped after another centimetre, “Alright, this is unhealthy AND impossible. This is impossible, right?” He gazed at her, a concerned look written across his face, “Right?!”
He went a little further but stopped again, “I feel like you’re not taking this as serious as me. OR, your boyfriend is a fucking horse.”
Minnie grinned, getting ready to get up again, “Guess you’ll have to find out.”
He looked at her perplexed and maybe even slightly scared, “W-What? What does that mean?”
"Minnie!" The familiar voice of her boyfriend caught her attention, making her turn towards the door through which he was just coming in.
"Minnie, what does that mean?" Vernon repeated making her chuckle.
She stood up, and let herself fall into his arms that were waiting for her. Arms that were usually warm and welcoming, but were now cold since he was outside for so long.
"Jesus Christ, you're freezing," she commented, flinching away slightly.
Wonwoo chuckled, "I know, sorry," pulling her back in to warm himself up a bit quicker.
"So," Vernon didn't let go, "Minnie?" Raising his hands again, this time showing an already prepared distance between his palms.
She let go of her boyfriend for a quick second, only to reach over to grab a pillow from the sofa and throw it across to hit him - thankfully she has somewhat good aim.
The '96 Liner stared at the two perplexed, his arms still in the same position, waiting for the girl to come back. "What was that?"
"Nothing," she shrugged it off, "Ignore him," already on her way to pull him away.
"Hyung!" The maknae called out, making her curse under her breath.
"Vernon, I swear to God-"
He ignored her and just started moving his hands, wiggling his eyebrows along the way, "Say stop."
"Stop?" Wonwoo answered him right away, making his hand movements stop. He looked down, then up at the rapper, then down again, then up again. Then he shook his head, "Nah, I don't believe you."
"Vernon," Minnie spoke again, making her voice slightly stricter, not even grazing a nerve with the '98 Liner.
"Ask him," he told her.
"No!"
"Ask him?" Wonwoo wondered, "Ask me?"
"No"
"Yes," Minnie and Vernon answered at the same time, making their eyes meet where the youngest of the room looked at her in amusement while she sent him an unamused facial expression.
"Come on, explain it to him."
"What's going on here?" The '96 Liner continued asking, for a good reason, as anyone else would be just as lost as him.
"Nothing," the girl told him before turning towards Vernon again, "If you want to know, ask him yourself, pervert."
"He'll be more honest with you." Was his excuse. He continued showing different distances between his hands to the couple, only confusing the oldest even more, up to the point where he started copying the younger rapper, making Minnie take his hands into her own, telling him to stop.
"Then what is this all about?" He questioned her again.
"Yeah Minnie, what is this all about?" Vernon continued the teasing, not realising that he seemed to be the weird one in this situation, but he just enjoyed how uncomfortable she got with explaining certain things like that.
She switched between looking at the second youngest and her boyfriend. Her gazes went back and forth, before she started whining slightly, then sighing in defeat.
"He wants to know your dick size," she mumbled.
"Huh?" He asked her, genuinely not having understood the tone in which she spoke.
"Your dick size," she repeated, "He was asking me about that."
Wonwoo nodded, "Aaaah, I see," as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Without saying another word, he took his hands out of her grasp and started doing the same motion Vernon had been doing the entire time. He looked up at his girlfriend, "What would you say?"
"Excuse me?" She glanced at him in shock.
"I'm not sure, you see it quite often, you tell me," he spoke openly, making her gasp at him and hit his shoulder,
"Wonwoo! Shut up!"
"What?" He wondered, "He wants to know." Before chuckling at her reaction, making the younger one laugh as well.
She shook her head, "You guys are unbelievable."
Minnie waited a few seconds before putting up her right hand, placing her thumb and forefinger in a one-inch proximity to each other, "This is pretty accurate." Before turning around to disappear into the kitchen, where Dokyeom had just come out of, but a hand on her arm and the loud laughs of the guys stopped her.
"Hey, hey, don't lie," her boyfriend told her.
"Yeah," Vernon cackled, "Not even I believe that."
"I don't want to talk about this anymore, can we stop now?" She was still in shock at how long this conversation was going on for and the fact that Wonwoo found amusement in it. Minnie shook her head, running her fingers through her hair.
"Okay okay," her boyfriend patted her arm, "Let's stop." Before turning to the '98 Liner, "Vernon?" Making him quiet down his laughter and look at the older rapper. All of a sudden, Wonwoo put his hands up in an actually accurate distance that would represent his length, making the girl gasp, and slap his hands away,
"Wonwoo!" But the guys just laughed together, Vernon even coming closer to high-five him.
"Eyyyy!! That's what I thought," he congratulated him, leaving the girl in shock.
She shook her head, still unsure if what just happened really had just happened, "You guys are unbelievable," before finally disappearing from the scene.
Best friend or not, even boyfriend or not, sometimes Minnie forgot that by the end of the day, they were all just men.
