"LOTS OF PIG ON EVERY SANDWICH"
That has long been one of my favorite barbecue restaurant slogans, courtesy of Fracchia's Pit Barbecue Cafe, which operated at 2461-2465 Jackson Avenue from the late 1940s up to about 1970. It came to mind when I saw the obituary for John Thomas Fracchia Jr., 84, in The Commercial Appeal of June 25. The bulk of Mr. Fracchia's work life was spent in the marine industry, but he got his start by managing the family restaurant.     For most of the 15 or so years I've been dabbling in this, I have almost always sent letters to the people I've wanted to talk with. Surely I sent one to Mr. Fracchia, but I have not been able to find a copy in my research mess. If I did not send him a letter, that was a huge blunder on my part. If I did and did not get a response, well, that has happened a lot. I might try to contact the family later on.    Anyway, here are some phone book ads for Fracchia's. The oldest one, circa 1948, lists the 2461 address (and features a classic clip-art pig). Fracchia's was among several barbecue restaurants in the city from that era that also had Italian on the menu. At the time it disappeared from the phone book, circa 1970, a Loeb’s was practically next door, at 2451.

PROJECT UPDATE: 954 JACKSON     A post from last October led with the news of a $25,000 Good Neighbor grant from the Center City Development Corp. to Roosevelt Bonds, owner of Jazzy J’s Sports Bar, to renovate the site into a 1,430-square-foot restaurant to be called Jackson Cafe. Upgrades were to include a new facade, outdoor seating and improved landscaping, at a total cost of $32,550. March was the target for opening.     The interest here is that the location has a long history as a barbecue restaurant, at least back to the mid-1950s when it was known as the Bar-B-Q Center. Later names included Jones Smoke House, Beasley's Barbecue, and Jango's, which was a favorite around our house in the early 2000s.       I drove by a couple of months ago and not much had changed, but today's visit saw lots of progress. The west side has a spiffy mural, and the patio area is moving along (enclosed, in a departure from the design rendering). It all looks neat and inviting, and worth a stop when it opens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PUT IT BACK     Tops, the venerable local barbecue chain, has been on a tear lately with new menu offerings and freshened facades on their older locations. All good, but I'm not a fan of the new look at the No. 6 shop at 3353 Summer. I have long considered it to be the most handsome Tops restaurant -- not even close -- and maybe the best-looking in the city. It has the neon pig (which is making a well-deserved comeback), but the real asset is the out-front placement of the pit, with a wall of windows to see it all. Fake flames now hide the real thing. Ugh. Put it back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SERVICE ON THE ROAD    I've had the opportunity this year to visit a couple of West Tennessee barbecue treasures -- Helen Turner's in Brownsville and Sam's in Humboldt. I try to stop at Helen's any time I'm passing exit 56 on I-40, but Sam's is a bit farther off the beaten path, but definitely worth the drive. I hadn't been there in years. The barbecue is excellent, and be sure to take a “pie” with you. Sam's is a Thursday-Saturday business only, so keep that in mind.

Memphis, Tennessee - From A Local
Original Post Link / Original post date: September 11 2023
Here is everything I enjoy doing in Memphis as a local to Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis is an interesting city to visit with a lot of history while currently in a season of growth and healing. I also did include some museums that relate back to the history of Memphis for anyone who is visiting and wants to know more about it.
Memphis Museum of Science & History (The Pink Palace) – Information Page
This has always been a favorite of mine in Memphis, ever since I was a kid. It’s so fun to walk around. There’s Memphis history and southern history In a beautiful museum. The gift shop is a bit overpriced FYI. [11/02/2023 Add.] A good thought of warning that there is a Civil War section with grotesque, realistic wax statues of amputations and Civil War medicine, so… Keep that in mind. If you want to hold your food down.
National Civil Rights Museum – Lorraine Motel – Information Page
Go. Go to this museum. This is one of the most important museums you could visit currently. If you go to one museum in Memphis, go to this one. This is Memphis history. This is the history of a city that was born of holding your head up and moving forward.
The Children’s Museum of Memphis – Information Page
This is another fun museum! I went when I was… you know, a children at one time, and I remember vividly enjoying it. I would recommend this is if you have a young restless child. If you have an older child, go to the Pink Palace.
Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid – Information Page
Look. This is a fever dream and I beg you to go. I cannot explain the trip I feel with this being the largest bass pro shop in the world while being in Memphis, Tennessee, on the Mississippi River, in a Pyramid. They have a whole bowling alley.
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art – Information Page
I have been to this museum a few times and I have loved it. It is a very nice museum. In my opinion, it Is one of the better Southern art museums in terms of covering ancient to contemporary art.
Huey’s – Website
I like their queso. I’ve been to many Huey’s locations and I have had a good experience at all of them. Just be careful if you go when Memphis is playing. It’ll probably be busy. Or any other football or basketball game.
Central BBQ – Website
Central is great. Go to it.
The Art Center – Website
This is my art store! If you are an artist, I would suggest popping in and supporting a Memphis business. [11/02/2023 Add.] If you’re driving and not flying, I would suggest stocking up a little here. They have great prices on certain things like Golden Acrylic Paints.
Memphis Zoo – Information Page
I think if you grew up in and around Memphis, you know this place like the back of your hand. It’s wonderful. It is one of the best Zoo’s. End of sentence. The Memphis Zoo is beside the Brooks in Overton Park and they have events for halloween and the winter holidays. I am partial to Zoo Lights, for the winter holidays, where the zoo is covered in lights and certain exhibits are open.
Stax Museum of American Soul Music – Website
Slave Haven/Burkle Estate Museum – Website
Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum – Website
Blues Hall of Fame Museum – Website
The Cotton Museum at Memphis Cotton Exchange – Website
Dixon Gallery & Gardens – Website
Two places that are overhyped in my opinion: The Rendezvous and Graceland. I grew up here. No local could care about either of these places. If you want to go to Graceland, that’s fine. None of us particularly care, but that’s okay. The Rendezvous on the other hand… don’t. Go get some real barbecue and experience the city. Not whatever monstrosity this is. Central BBQ is great. Tops is pretty good. Don’t go to The Rendezvous unless you want subpar BBQ. Do not.
Also, we have a whole IKEA. If you’ve never been and want to go… we’ve got one! It’s big. Bring your walking shoes.
I really just wanted to make a post about where I’m from and put that out there. I love this city. Aside from that, I hope you’re having a good day/night wherever you are, and most of all-
Happy travels! – Annie, the Crosseyed Cricket.

Texas Style BBQ
That brings us to the most recent style of Texas Style BBQ, which is centered in cities like Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. Texas Style BBQ is the stuff of legends. In Texas, barbecue is serious business. texas barbecue generally uses no mops, sops, glops, bastes, usually, the simpler the flavor profile of the rub recipe, the better. Now you can experience this same Texas Style BBQ in Camden, SC at Westfall’s Texas Style BBQ! Barbecuing is as old as the United States itself. In Texas, the history of this rich food has developed in diverse ways. And depending on where you go, different regions have different barbecue stories. There is little debate that Texas is one of the four main regions of American barbecue along with Memphis, Kansas City and the Carolinas.  However, trying to define exactly what Texas barbecue is, is very difficult.style of Texas Style BBQ you prefer, you're in for a delicious meal. Good barbecue is crafted, not just cooked, and it honors the traditions of Texas barbecue that are alive and well today.barbecue restaurants throughout the country, have latched on mainly
barbecue is where they really come into their own. Few would argue that the Lone Star State is among a handful of states that really know how to do Texas Style BBQ right. while Tennessee, the Carolinas, Missouri and Georgia all have offer unique methods that we love, Texas has its own special style that is unmatched. Marks a rejection of technological advancements in barbecue like gas-assisted rotisserie smokers. to the Central Texas style of cooking meat, causing some to worry that other distinct styles are losing ground.
Texas Style BBQ admired just as much for its incredible smoked sausages and versions of its Central Texas style barbecued pork ribs are quickly gaining popularity. 9 Tips to Maximize Space in Your Home
Memphis, Tennessee, offers a unique blend of Southern charm, a rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant community of 618,626[u1]  people from all walks of life. With its iconic music scene, delectable barbecue cuisine, and a deep-rooted sense of history, Memphis has become an enticing destination for those seeking a distinctive and fulfilling way of life. However, no matter where you choose to call home, the challenge of maximizing space in your living quarters remains a universal concern. In this article, we will explore ten practical tips to help you make the most of your living space while enjoying the beauty and warmth that Memphis has to offer.
1.   Declutter Your Space
Decluttering your living space can bring a sense of harmony to your life. Clutter not only occupies precious space but can also create mental clutter, making it harder to fully appreciate the city's vibrant atmosphere. The first step toward maximizing space is to declutter your home.
Begin by identifying items that are no longer needed or used regularly. Whether it's old magazines, unused appliances, or outgrown clothing, these items can often find a new purpose elsewhere. Donate, sell, or recycle them to free up valuable space and lighten the load.
2.   Utilize Storage Units
While decluttering your home, you may find that some belongings hold sentimental value or are only used seasonally. Look for the best Memphis self storage units to keep your treasured possessions safe and accessible without cluttering your living space.
These storage facilities offer a secure and convenient way to store items like holiday decorations, seasonal clothing, or even musical instruments. By seamlessly integrating self-storage into your life, you can keep your living space tidy and organized while still holding onto the things that matter most.
3.   Multi-Functional Furniture
Multi-functional furniture can be a game-changer for space optimization. Whether you live in a cozy apartment or a spacious house, the right furniture choices can make a significant difference.
Consider pieces like sofa beds, which provide comfortable seating during the day and transform into a guest bed at night. Storage ottomans offer a dual purpose by providing a place to rest your feet and stow away blankets, magazines, or other small items. Foldable tables are perfect for smaller dining areas, as they can be easily expanded to accommodate guests and then folded away when not in use. These versatile furniture options allow you to make the most of your space without compromising on comfort and style.
4.   Vertical Storage Solutions
Maximizing vertical space in your home can also create ample storage opportunities. Wall-mounted shelves, organizers, and hanging racks can be strategically placed to take advantage of the vertical dimension in any room.
You can showcase your favorite records on stylish wall-mounted shelves or keep your cookware within easy reach using a hanging pot rack in the kitchen. These vertical storage solutions add not only functionality but also visual interest to your living spaces. By thinking upward, you can make the most of your square footage while maintaining an organized and clutter-free environment.
5.   Streamline Your Closet
Efficient closet space can make your daily routine more manageable while preserving valuable floor space. To optimize your closet, start by decluttering your wardrobe. Donate or sell items you no longer wear or need, and invest in quality hangers to keep your clothes in good condition. Consider using drawer dividers, shoe organizers, and labeled bins to keep everything in its place. By streamlining your closet, you'll not only create more room for fashion choices but also establish a sense of order in your daily life.
6.   Kitchen Space Optimization
An efficiently organized kitchen is essential. To maximize your kitchen space, start by considering how you can make the most of your cabinets, drawers, and countertops.
Drawer dividers and organizers can help keep utensils and cutlery in order, while pot racks or hanging baskets can create additional storage for cookware and utensils. Utilize under-cabinet and pantry space with the help of pull-out shelves and storage bins. Keeping your kitchen organized not only enhances the culinary experience but also creates a more inviting atmosphere where you can enjoy your favorite dishes.
7.   Small Bathroom Hacks
Don't let a small bathroom cramp your style. Making the most of limited bathroom space requires creativity and smart organization.
Consider installing wall-mounted storage solutions such as shelves or cabinets to keep toiletries within easy reach without taking up precious floor space. Over-the-door organizers can hold towels or toiletries, and under-sink cabinets can store cleaning supplies and extra toiletries. Keeping your bathroom clutter-free and well-organized will make it feel more spacious and enjoyable, allowing you to start your day on a harmonious note.
8.   Open Floor Plans and Minimalism
Open floor plans and minimalistic aesthetics can transform your living space into a haven of tranquility. Consider removing unnecessary walls that may obstruct the flow of natural light and air. Minimalist design principles encourage the use of fewer, carefully selected furnishings and decor items, allowing each piece to shine and contribute to an uncluttered ambiance. In your home, this approach not only fosters a sense of openness but also allows the unique culture of the city to take center stage.
9.   Maximizing Outdoor Space
Extending your living space to the great outdoors is a wonderful way to maximize your overall square footage. Whether you have a small balcony or a spacious backyard, there are many ways to make the most of your outdoor area.
Consider creating a patio or deck for outdoor dining, lounging, and entertaining. Add comfortable outdoor furniture, potted plants, and cozy lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Gardening enthusiasts can establish a beautiful garden space. By embracing outdoor living, you'll not only maximize your space but also immerse yourself in the city's outdoor-friendly lifestyle.
Conclusion
Maximizing space in your home can lead to a more harmonious and enjoyable lifestyle. Your living space should reflect the same sense of harmony and comfort. For those looking to maximize space in their houses, following these tips will prove worthwhile. With these ideas, you can let your living space be a reflection of the city's enduring beauty and charm.

Cleaner City, Greener Future: Memphis Used Cooking Oil Pickup
Tumblr media
In the vibrant city of Memphis, where the blues echo through the streets and the barbecue smoke wafts through the air, a new rhythm of sustainability is gaining momentum. "Green Practices:used cooking oil collection Memphis TN Recycling Made Easy in Memphis" is not just a slogan; it's a call to action for residents to join the movement towards a cleaner, greener future.
Memphis has long been known for its rich cultural heritage and mouthwatering cuisine. However, with great flavors often come large amounts of used cooking oil. Recognizing the environmental impact of improper disposal, the city has embraced a proactive approach to managing this waste through an easy and accessible used oil recycling program.
This initiative aims to transform the way residents think about their cooking practices, encouraging them to become stewards of the environment. The program's success lies in its simplicity and convenience. Instead of discarding used cooking oil down the drain or into the trash, residents can now effortlessly contribute to a more sustainable city by participating in the used oil recycling program.
One of the key features that make this program so accessible is its network of collection points strategically placed throughout Memphis. These collection points, often located near popular grocery stores or community centers, provide a convenient drop-off location for residents to dispose of their used cooking oil without hassle. The ease of access is crucial in encouraging widespread participation and ensuring that the recycling process becomes a natural part of residents' routines.
The collected used cooking oil undergoes a sophisticated recycling process that transforms it into valuable resources. Rather than being an environmental burden, the once-discarded oil becomes a raw material for biodiesel production. This closed-loop approach not only minimizes waste but also contributes to the city's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
Educational initiatives play a significant role in the success of the program. The city organizes workshops, seminars, and outreach campaigns to raise awareness about the environmental impact of used cooking oil and the benefits of recycling. By fostering a sense of responsibility among residents, Memphis is cultivating a community of environmentally conscious individuals who understand the importance of their role in preserving the city's natural beauty.
Moreover, local businesses are encouraged to participate in the program, further amplifying its impact. Restaurants, catering services, and food establishments are provided with resources and support to implement sustainable practices in their kitchens. This collaborative effort ensures that the entire community is involved in the journey towards a greener Memphis.
As "Green Practices: Used Oil Recycling Made Easy in Memphis" gains traction, the city is setting an example for others to follow. The success of this initiative is not just measured in the amount of used oil collected but in the collective change in mindset towards sustainability. Memphis is proving that a city's rich cultural history can coexist harmoniously with modern environmental practices, creating a legacy that future generations can be proud of. In Memphis, the blues may play on, but the city is singing a new tune—one of sustainability, responsibility, and a commitment to a brighter, greener future.

The History and Evolution of BBQ Around the World - From BBQ Henderson to Worldwide Phenomenon
Tumblr media
Barbecue (BBQ) is more than just a method of cooking food. It is a cultural pillar that brings people together, often over slow-cooked, smoky, and tender meat. While BBQ is now enjoyed around the world, it has humble beginnings that date back thousands of years. In this blog post, we will delve into the fascinating history and evolution of BBQ across the world, including the significance of BBQ Henderson in modern times.
BBQ’s roots can be traced all the way back to the ancient civilizations of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Greeks, for instance, practiced BBQ through their spit roasting method known as “souvla” or “gyro.” Meanwhile, in Asia, BBQ has a long-standing history as a communal feasting ritual. This practice, which can be traced back to the Han Dynasty in China, involves cooking meat and vegetables on skewers over an open flame.
Moving to the Americas, the indigenous people of South America were known to have used a traditional BBQ method known as Asado, which involved grilling meats over a wood fire. Similarly, North American Native tribes used pit cooking to BBQ foods like buffalo, venison, and fish. The term BBQ, however, was first coined in the American south in the 17th century, where it was used mostly by African American slaves. The word comes from the Spanish term “barbacoa,” which referred to a method of slow-cooking meat over an open flame.
Over the centuries, BBQ Henderson has become a staple in American cuisine and culture. Different regions of America serve up their unique style of BBQ, ranging from Texas-style beef brisket to Carolina-style “pulled pork.” BBQ has even become a competition sport in America, with events like the American Royal World Series of BBQ and the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.
BBQ’s popularity has spread worldwide, with different countries putting their spin on this beloved cooking method. For example, in Australia, BBQ has deep cultural roots as a symbol of the “Aussie” outdoor lifestyle. Australians typically cook on BBQ grills, with the Billabong-style BBQ a popular choice for outdoor gatherings. Similarly, in Japan, the art of “yakiniku” is a popular BBQ cooking method that utilizes a charcoal grill to cook meats.
In India, BBQ has an entirely different meaning. Here, it is known as “tandoori,” and the food is cooked in a clay oven known as a “tandoor.” The meat, marinated in a blend of spices and yoghurt, is cooked directly over hot coals, giving it a smoky flavor. Meanwhile, in Africa, BBQ is a communal feast known as a “braai.” The word “braai” comes from the Afrikaans word for “grill,” and it is a social gathering where food is cooked over open flames.
BBQ has come a long way since its humble beginnings in ancient times. Today, it represents much more than just cooking food - it is a cultural pillar that brings people together. Whether it’s enjoying BBQ Henderson with friends and family, a community-wide BBQ event, or an international BBQ festival, this beloved cooking method remains an essential part of many cultures worldwide. We hope this blog has given you insight into the rich history of BBQ and its evolution around the world.

RARE  BITS
These are astonishing times around the GPC home office.   I get notifications every week of estate sales in the area. One of them had this picture of these Little Pigs of America items, things I've never seen for sale.
Tumblr media
The Memphis-based Little Pigs of America barbecue franchise operation has been a focus of this site for years, so I was stoked. I've picked up the occasional LPOA postcard and matchbook off ebay, but never anything that wasn't paper.   Needless to say, Thursday morning I was in line at 8:30 to try to get these items. The folks ahead of me were record dealers, so I was hopeful. Once inside, I couldn't find them right away because the house was crammed with stuff. I was starting to get nervous as minutes passed, but finally found them in plain sight, on a table right as you entered the house. I was lucky. Anyway, they are painted on masonite, each one just a bit different.
Tumblr media
According to the LPOA commissary and promotions catalog, they appear to be counter easels.
Tumblr media
I had the feeling there was more. The homeowner was clearly a barbecue cooker -- contest trophies and pig knicknacks inside and a trailer smoker out back. Then I found a box of Koozies printed up for a barbecue team, and I recognized one of the names, which turned out to be the homeowner. I realized I had corresponded with her -- very likely LPOA related -- but I couldn't dredge up the connection immediately.   Back home, I looked up my LPOA letter file, and I had written her 10 years earlier after reading her mother's obituary in The Commercial Appeal that mentioned the family's Little Pigs restaurant in Trumann, Ark. A visit to the Trumann public library confirmed that the restaurant was indeed an LPOA franchise. (I never did pin down its the exact location.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The woman called me back after receiving my letter, and at the time she was fairly certain she didn't have anything related to the restaurant. But now I had the connection -- these counter easels came from the Trumann shop. I had a greater feeling there was more.   Friday morning I was back at the sale. A lot of stuff was gone, but a lot remained. If you hadn't been there Thursday, you would think Friday was the sale's opening day. The house has a strange floor plan -- easy to lose track of where you've been. After an hour of walking through the rooms and on the verge of calling it a day, I picked up a binder from a shelf I had somehow overlooked and found this --
Tumblr media
I've seen an operating manual only one other time -- at the LPOA "mothership" in Statesville, N.C., an LPOA restaurant that has remained unchanged and in the same family since it opened in 1963 (they have EVERYTHING). It is a stunning artifact. Besides all of the franchise information, it has LPOA promotional material, menus from the restaurant and a hand-written log of the shop's daily receipts from late 1963 through 1964.

Pretty doggone amazing. I'm still in shock.

CONTENT WRITING Brief Blog post highlighting affordable cities in the US for millennials
Tone Informal and humorous
Audience Age 25-40, young urbanites starting their careers
Destination Website similar to Buzzfeed
Cool cities that won’t break the (piggy)bank
Tumblr media
“Wondering why you’ve stumbled onto yet another list of affordable places to live in the United States…? Perhaps because there’s a nasty affordability crisis going on and its hitting millennials, hard. If you don’t know what that means — it’s probably because you were born before hip-hop and reality tv. But just to avoid any confusion and an overuse of meaningless jargon, let’s just say we’re in trouble. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for young people to find ways to survive in the country’s best cities — you know the ones with the gorgeous beaches, booty-shaking nightlife, exhilarating art scenes, open-minded civic culture, a smorgasbord of food choices and a plethora of jobs in fields we tend to excel in, i.e., everything from cutting-edge technology to instagram stories.
There are many possible reasons for this. And in true human fashion, some older people would like to place blame at the feet of the victims. According to some of them, we can’t afford to survive because we’re just plain lazy. Or because we want everything instantaneously. The first explanation accusation I will treat with the contempt it deserves. As for the second, well it’s rather difficult to argue with. Although I will add that it’s not exactly our fault. We didn’t invent the internet and instant messaging after all. I think much more relevant to the questions of affordability are the following: the rise in college debt (not our fault), the above-inflation rise in home prices (not our fault), the Great Recession (definitely not our fault) and the rise of neoliberal polices (I’m looking at you Reagan).
Chances are you already know all this. But I come with good tidings: Fear not; all is not doom and gloom! While some of us sit in our parent’s basements conspiring the coming revolution (where I imagine the guillotine being replaced with a twitch-hunt), I have compiled a list of some of the more affordable places in the country for young people to begin building alternatives to one day eclipse the mess we grew up in — or where we can just Netflix and chill. These places may not have everything their older, richer cousins do, but they are bringing sexy back in their own way. Who needs a subway and $12 beer anyway?
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE
Named after the Ancient Egypt metropolis and bordered on one side by the majestic Mississippi, this city has a music history as diverse as this great nation and a fantastic location at the heart of the South. Granted it does have a little dark history being the site of MLK Jr’s assassination and all but which city doesn’t have a few skeletons in its closet. Otherwise it’s booming with cultural offerings such as Sun Studio which is linked to Johnny Cash and Elvis; the National Civil Rights Museum; Presley’s home, Graceland; a drive-in cinema; as well as many blues clubs and Memphis barbecues. For the outdoor lovers there are five state parks within a two-hour drive. And did I mention it’s fantastically affordable?! The average median home cost is well below the national average and renting a one-bedroom will run you below $800 on average. All-in-all, Memphis is a good choice for those of us looking for affordable rents, real music and ribs.
Tumblr media
 NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
It’s a warm summer’s night in the French Quarter. An obscure figure crosses the narrow street to stand illuminated under a street lamp. He sets down the heavy black object he is carrying. Opening it gently, he carefully removes the instrument hiding inside. Bringing the shiny metal to his pursed lips, he exhales smoothly into the mouthpiece, his life force flowing through the tubes to produce a melody carried off into the night. After a few more lines, another lone figure appears under the street lamp and joins in the nocturnal serenade. The duet attracts a few more musicians, one at a time, until the sounds of a full, impromptu jazz concert resound between the centuries old walls. Couples start to dance along, spurred on by the sweetness in the night air. This is New Orleans folks — filled with music and magic. This three-hundred-year-old port city was founded by the French, built by their slaves, bought by America and immortalised by jazz. Famous for creole cuisine, voodoo and Mardi Gras, people in this fascinating city know how to eat, drink and be merry. Despite ongoing racial tensions, this a multicultural city home to the histories and living cultural traditions of many different groups who continue to celebrate them. The city is also home to a burgeoning film industry and generally has a lot to offer creatives. Though it has gained in popularity in recent years, and has therefore become more expensive than it once was, New Orleans is still affordable for those of us looking for history, culture and a stiff drink.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN
From industrial powerhouse to borderline bankruptcy, this midwestern town has seen its fortunes rise and fall substantially over the years. It gave us the automobile, white flight, Motown and techno. It also gave us Madonna. Following years of depopulation, financial mismanagement and the effects of that pesky Great Recession, Detroit has started to turn itself around and has begun attracting many young people back into city limits. While it still faces many challenges, notably related to unequal access to the fruits of the new boom, many residents hope that the current changes will continue to bring good fortune and spread it around. Attractions in or near the city include the Detroit Institute of Arts — an impressive art museum with one of the largest collections in the country — and the Great Lakes, some of which feature such spectacular white sand beaches you can almost believe you’re in Miami. While it does require a lot of imagination and even more hard work, this flowering city is perfect for those pioneers who aren’t afraid of a challenge, or 7-month-long winters.
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
Mormons wishing to escape persecution for their beliefs — especially those related to the practice of polygamy — fled to the Salt Lake valley and founded this city in the 1800s. Though the Church of Latter-day Saints officially abandoned polygamy at the turn of the 20th century, this did not stop the fantastic run of Sister Wives on TLC. Salt Lake City, however, is more than just Mormon history. Being surrounded on three sides by sister-mountains and by the famous salt lake on the fourth (the original rocky mountain gangbang), it’s a nature lover’s dream. The city has also grown to include large Latino and LGBTQ+ communities. A thriving food, craft brewery and ‘artisanal' wine scene will be sure to please the inner hipster that lives in almost every one born after 1985. Then there’s also skiing, hiking, water sports on the salt lake, botanical gardens and many other outdoor actives for both winter and summer. And Utah itself is drop-dead gorgeous, serving as the backdrop for many Western film shoots. Salt Lake City also boasts one of the country’s remaining drive-in movie theatres (maybe this should be a criterion to make this list). Over all, Salt Lake City is a great option for those who like wide spaces, outdoor adventures and the Wild West.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA
Home to the world’s busiest airport and some of our favourite hip-hop hits from the naughties, Hotlanta is a magnet for contemporary culture. From theater and street art to music and festivals, this thriving Southern city has something for all the art lovers. It has so many trees it is considered “a city in a forest”. Despite a strong reliance on cars, it has good transport infrastructure for a city of its size and scale. From that airport we mentioned earlier you can find good deals to get you to Europe or South America, and beyond, in the blink of an eye. And while it’s not directly on the coast, the closest beaches are less than a five-hour drive away. Because of its combination of good job opportunities, green spaces, infrastructure, moderate rents and a lively art and music scene, Atlanta is a good choice for those of us looking for an interesting larger city.
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
Looking for Parisian sophistication, Venetian romance and Florentine art? Then you definitely won’t like this neon-flooded shrine to mass culture and overindulgence. Located in a desert that is so hot it may as well be the seventh circle of hell, Las Vegas is known mainly as a mecca for hedonistic tourism. While all they say about Sin City may be true, it is also one of the more affordable places to live in the western half of the country. Besides affordability, Las Vegas also offers an excess of entertainment activities, for all tastes, countless restaurants and buffets and hiking hotspots only a short drive away. Los Angeles and the coast will you take four hours driving, for those who crave big city trappings and lazy beach days. If you feel like living the college life till kingdom come, this one’s for you.
Tumblr media
AUSTIN, TEXAS
Austin has risen in ranks the last few years to reach its place in the Holy Hipster Trinity, along with Williamsburg and Portland. While the Texan capital has gained massively in popularity (and price), it still remains relatively affordable while offering lots to see, do and eat. Plus everything is supposedly bigger in Texas. With its myriad bars, pubs, cafés, food trucks, and breweries (in case you thought I was joking about the hipster thing), it offers almost never-ending opportunities to eat and drink. But lest you think this is where its charm ends, Austin also boasts many theaters, music venues and events, including the SXSW Festival — making it a cultural capital in its own right. It has so many music venues, it claims to be the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ — it seems hyperbole is certainly bigger in Texas. In what may be Austin’s offering on the altar of Hipsterdom, some residents have adopted the mantra “Keep Austin Weird” to protect its intangible cultural heritage of people doing whatever the hell they want. Unfortunately, a company managed to trademark the slogan and is trying to prevent people from making unlicensed t-shirts. Will the madness of late capitalism ever end?!?! To say the least, Austin is an interesting place with a warm climate, surrounded by nature and filled to the brim with weirdos, perfect for those looking for adventures of all sorts.
Tumblr media
SAVANNAH, GEORGIA
For those of us who absolutely cannot live without the beach, here is one coastal city that won’t steal your money and give you nightmares just for the privilege of sleeping there. Quite literally oozing with history and Southern charm, Savannah plays host to some of the most beautiful colonial architecture on the East coast. Containing 22 park-like squares and mansions that will have you saying “oh my" in a leisurely Southern drawl, it really is dripping with beauty. For those interested in the history of the city, there are countless museums and monuments, including tours depicting slave life as it was hundreds of years ago. While not as strong on its nightlife offerings as other places on this list, Savannah makes up for it with gorgeous beaches including the beautiful Tybee Island. If the coastal life is what you’re looking for, Savannah might be the one.

Full heart today. Had a wonderful Thanksgiving in Memphis (my first time ever), tried oysters for the first time yummy, got a little run in along the Mississippi, shopped for vinyls at this amazing store on Beale Street with the sweetest owner, ate delicious barbecue, got Yuengling on draft which is a special treat, learned about the deep history of Memphis, and appreciated all the blues I could! Also! Made it home after a stressful Air BnB guffaw this morning as we left, and made the most of the night by playing a new Muddy Waters vinyl, sipping on some of my perhaps most favorite ever whiskey from a small, local distillery in Memphis, and decorating for Christmas until almost midnight. In between dancing, sips, and running around decorating, I had lots of kisses and hugs with my ❤️, smiles and talks of the future and enjoying being here right now. What a life!

Cooking  Feast on recipes, food writing and culinary inspiration from Sam Sifton and NYT Cooking.
Not too many cooks, but just enough: There are 75 of them — chefs, farmers and Indigenous home cooks — that have contributed recipes to this collaboration between the United Nations and Kitchen Connection Alliance, a nonprofit that seeks to improve systems for growing and distributing food worldwide. Sustainability and healthy eating are front and center. There are five recipe sections covering food systems, biodiversity, sustainable consumption, food and climate change, and food waste. Among the stellar recipes in the generally vegetable-forward collection are Moroccan chorba with eggplant and sweet potato; a simple squash soup from the American Black Créole Community; Austrian potato goulash; and venison carpaccio with watercress salad, suitable for a party buffet. The carbon footprints are given only for the recipes in the climate change chapter; though they have them for the other recipes. And as comprehensive as this book might be, there is no recipe index and almost no reference to buying organic, though “sustainably sourced” is advised for seafood and eggs. Proceeds from sales benefit the development of a children’s version of the book and support the U.N. Bookstore and projects with Indigenous communities.

Amp Up Your Thanksgiving Gravy
Tumblr media
There are myriad methods for turning pale, thin turkey gravy into a lustrous, nut-brown, velvet-textured sauce. Commonplace thickeners include cold water slurries of flour or cornstarch stirred in and brought to a simmer, the latter resulting in a more translucent result. For color, you can resort to a splash of Worcestershire or soy sauce. But there is another way, which adds umami in addition to richer texture and deeper color: red miso. Use about a tablespoon for two cups of gravy, perhaps made from degreased pan drippings and homemade turkey stock, but taste as you go; the miso can be salty. Red miso is handy to have on hand for enriching sauces, soups and stews. Keep it in the refrigerator — it will long outlast the appliance’s warranty.
A History of the ‘Vous
Tumblr media
For more than 70 years in Memphis, Tenn., the Rendezvous, a restaurant familiarly known as the ‘Vous, has been a magnet for barbecue lovers. It was founded by Charles Vergos, who was Greek, and is still family-owned, now into the second and third generations. It was notable not just for pit-smoked ribs, but for its longtime waiters, their personalities and excellent service. It’s now the subject of a compelling new documentary, “The ‘Vous,” narrated by several members of its mostly Black staff, including Percy Norris, Jack Dyson and Calvin Bell, who tell the story of the restaurant and its owners from its inception through the Jim Crow era, the civil rights movement and up to the present. The film was made, in part, to preserve memories of the staff, many of whom have retired or soon will.
“The ‘Vous,” directed by Jack Porter Lofton and Jeff Dailey, a Mudroom film produced by Ruth Whitney and Pat O’Brien, streaming through Sunday on DOC NYC, www.docnyc.net, $12.
A Boozy Taste of Autumn
Tumblr media
Adding a little of Heimat New York’s new Barrel-Finished Bosc Pear Liqueur to a premeal glass of bubbly gives it a touch of rustic fruit flavor that suits the season. Small pours of the liqueur, straight, become a lovely digestif worth considering for Thanksgiving dinner’s finale. The liqueur, at 22 percent alcohol and macerated from Hudson Valley pears, is aged for 13 months in bourbon barrels from Brooklyn’s Kings County Distillery. The result is a pale russet-toned liqueur, a little cloudy on purpose, with a mouth-filling viscosity. The bouquet captures the fruit, the essence of which lingers on the palate.
Heimat New York Barrel-Finished Bosc Pear Liqueur, $25.99 for 375 milliliters at Wine Bazaar in New Rochelle, New York, winebazaar.com.
A Holiday Cooking Roundtable
Tumblr media
Rose Levy Beranbaum’s latest baking book is “The Cookie Bible,” and in the run-up to the holidays she will be giving a virtual talk and a demonstration of one of her favorite treats, tahini crisps, for the Roundtable series at the 92nd Street Y. She also plans to discuss baking ingredients in general, the properties of different flours, using weight versus volume measurements and how eggs have changed.
Tahini Crisps by Rose Levy Beranbaum, Roundtable by the 92nd Street Y, New York, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., $35, roundtable.org.
