Did Margaret Bibby and Dora Mills have red hair?
Tumblr media
Map showing the number of redheads, signified by dots, courtesy of a Ginger Patriot article on the "Redhead map project."
In the past, on this blog, I've written about my ancestors, such as Margaret Bibby, and Dora Mills, one of whom was born in Ireland (Margaret), the other of whom was born in New York but had Irish descent (Dora). The trademark for women whom are Irish is claimed to be their red hair, making them "redheads" or "ginger" as it is called.
Scientifically, it is clear that hair color is determined by a specific type of melanin, also called pigment. Red hair, in an individual, is specifically a DNA mutation, a benign trait in humans. More specifically, those with red hair have "mostly pheomelanin with a little eumelanin." To delve into this deeper, News Medical states that
Pheomelanin is also found in the hair and skin. This type of melanin provides pink and red colors and is the main pigment found among red-haired individuals. This type of melanin is not as protective against UV- radiation induced cancer as eumelanin.
It turns out that the notion that a majority, or a sizable minority in Ireland, north and south, have red hair is incorrect, since only abut 2% of the world’s population are estimated to have red hair. At the same time, while the majority of those who are Irish do not have red hair, the "incidence of red hair in Ireland north and south is much higher than in other places," purportedly covering 10% of the population, or 1 in ten people in Ireland, with more red haired people, by percentage, in Scotland, than Ireland! [1] This dispels the myth that Irish people have red hair. In order for someone to have red hair, both parents must be carriers of the gene MC1R. Even with that, there is only a 25% chance that the offspring of those parents will have red hair! After all, it is the "rarest hair color in the world."In fact, according to maps in The Guardian, the area of Ireland, where Margaret Bibby and John Mills were likely born, has a lower frequency of red-haired individuals. While those with red hair were originally ridiculed, now it is a desired hair color, apparently.
This post was originally published on WordPress in June 2018.
Some have noted that this gene has its roots in original settlers of the British Isles:
The MC1R gene has been identified by researchers as the gene responsible for red hair as well as the accompanying fair skin and tendency towards freckles. According to genetic research, genes for red hair first appeared in human beings about 40,000 to 50,000 years ago. These genes were then brought to the British Isles by the original settlers, men and women who would have been relatively tall, with little body fat, athletic, fair-skinned and who would have had red hair. So red-heads may well be descended from the earliest ancestors of the Irish and British.
Those with red hairs have such acclaim that the Irish Redhead Convention in Cork was held for six years, ending in 2016 due to varied financial problems and strains. There is also apparently "Ginger Pride" events in parts of the world. [2] Additionally, there is a "magazine dedicated to the beauty of red hair" called MC1R, after the "ginger" or "redhead" gene. This same magazine noted the following about red hair: that the "most bizarre and inexplicable aspect of gingerness is the generation-skipping, seemingly indiscriminate nature with which the ginger gene manifests itself." With this being the case, maybe Dora and Margaret had red hair.
In order to provide an answer to this question, I tried to colorize the images of Margaret and Dora. As you'll see below, the image of Dora was inconclusive, but it looks like Margaret (maybe) had brown hair:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In hopes of getting a better result on Dora, I tried to colorize an image of the whole family (Dora, Cyrus W. Packard, and their children) in 1892, which I had posted on Packed With Packards!. The result is still inconclusive, as she may have brown hair, as it shows up dark, but maybe not!
Tumblr media
So, we don't really know the answer to the question, posed in the title, of "Did Margaret Bibby and Dora Mills have red hair?" Margaret maybe had brown hair (but that's not even sure), but with Dora, it is not known. It is all together possible that she had red hair!
That's all for now. I look forward to your comments!

HPV vaccines have existed since 2006—but are onerous to distribute since they require multiple doses. But that might be changing as new evidence emerges about the efficacy of a single dose, which would also allow countries to expand their vaccination programs. Photograph By Ramon Van Flymen, ANP/Redux
The End of Cervical Cancer? It Might Be Within Reach.
Emerging evidence suggests that just one dose of the HPV vaccine is as effective as two or three—and that has huge implications for the battle against cervical cancer.
— By Amy McKeever | May 25, 2023
Cervical Cancer is often called “a silent killer” because there are no obvious early warning signs. As the fourth most common cancer in women, it kills more than 300,000 a year globally.
But what if we could better protect against the virus that causes most cervical tumors?
The human papillomavirus, better known as HPV, is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world because it often circulates without causing any disruptive symptoms. But it can cause genital warts and various cancers in both men and women—and is driving the recent rise of throat cancer in men.
Even though vaccines that prevent HPV have existed since 2006, experts say a new development may put the global goal of vaccinating 90 percent of girls under 15 within reach.
The revelation in question is simpler than you might expect: Emerging evidence suggests the HPV vaccines are effective after just one dose—rather than the two or three that are currently recommended in most countries. In 2022, the World Health Organization advised switching to a single dose of the vaccine, explaining that not only is it efficacious but it will also make distribution easier, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
“These are remarkable vaccines. They’re incredibly potent in preventing infection,” says Andrew Pollard, chair the United Kingdom’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization. “I think we will see a world where cervical cancer is a rarity.”
The U.K is among more than 20 countries that have announced plans to switch to a single dose, a group that also includes Australia, Ireland, and Mexico. But will other countries follow suit?
A Surprising Discovery
The first hint that one dose of the vaccine works as well as two or three came somewhat unexpectedly—a result of studies in Costa Rica and India that were both testing multiple doses. In both cases, researchers later examined women who had only received a single dose—and those studies revealed it was still remarkably effective.
“There’s a very strong biological rationale for why we expect a single dose to work,” says Ruanne Barnabas, chief of infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital who is leading the KEN SHE study, a randomized clinical trial investigating the efficacy of the single-dose vaccine in Kenyan women ages 15 to 20.
Typically, she explains, vaccines like the HPV vaccine are given in multiple doses because they only use part of the virus to elicit an immune response. But the proteins in the HPV vaccine behave a little differently: they reassemble themselves to mimic the whole virus—making it plausible that the vaccine could be more protective.
More evidence has trickled in to support that hypothesis. Last year, the KEN SHE study reported that the single-dose had a 98 percent efficacy at 18 months—and new data released last month shows that has held strong through 36 months. Meanwhile, results from a study comparing vaccine efficacy in the Kenyan women to that of girls ages 9 to 14 in Tanzania showed that their immune responses were on par—suggesting a single dose could be just as effective in the younger age group.
Finally, follow-up studies of the women and girls from the original India and Costa Rica studies show that their immune responses continue to be strong more than a decade after accidentally getting just a single dose. To Pollard, this was a particularly compelling piece of evidence while weighing whether to recommend a change in the U.K’s vaccination program.
“If your antibody levels stay absolutely rock solid for 10 years, they’re not going to suddenly fall off a cliff,” he says. “The immune system doesn’t do that.”
Why Does It Matter?
If the evidence continues to build in favor of the single-dose vaccine, it would be a game changer—particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
These countries face major challenges in delivering HPV vaccines—and as a result they suffer the highest burden, or about 90 percent of cervical cancer deaths.
The first challenge is finding the people who need the vaccines in the first place, says Greg Widmyer, senior adviser for immunization at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which funded the KEN SHE study. It’s hard enough getting preteen and teenage girls into a clinic once for a shot but to come back for a second dose—or a third? “We were seeing a big drop,” he says.
Delivering multiple shots is also expensive —and not just for the jabs themselves. Widmyer points out that every time you administer a dose, you must pay for staff time, transportation, and other overhead costs. For some countries, these costs for a two- or three-dose vaccine can be so prohibitive that they don’t even bother to set up a vaccination program—other countries are just beginning to introduce the vaccine.
With the single dose, Greg says, the channel to reach girls “opens up completely”—you can set up vaccination clinics at places where girls already are, from schools to hair salons or other places in their communities.
But it could also be a win everywhere. Switching to a single dose would ensure there’s more vaccine to go around—meaning countries would be able to vaccinate a broader range of people to reach herd immunity, or the point when enough people have been vaccinated or infected naturally that the population as a whole becomes immune to a disease. Barnabas points out that countries that already allow for vaccination among boys and older age groups have seen “a really dramatic” decrease in the number of precancerous lesions and warts and cancers.
For the U.K., Pollard says it was primarily a question of efficiency. “This decision really was driven by the emerging data, which made it very clear that we were not going to be losing protection by going down to one dose—and therefore, why wouldn’t you?”
An End to Cervical Cancer?
It’s not yet clear when—or whether—other countries will make the leap to just a single-dose of the vaccine. Some may wait for more evidence from studies that are ongoing, including a trial evaluating the efficacy of a single dose among 20,000 girls ages 12 to 16 in Costa Rica. That study is expected to reach its endpoint in two years.
But experts believe that momentum is building. “I firmly believe the elimination of cervical cancer is possible,” WHO Assistant Director-General Dr Princess Nothemba (Nono) Simelela said in a press release announcing the organization’s decision to advise switching to a single dose. “This single-dose recommendation has the potential to take us faster to our goal of having 90 percent of girls vaccinated by the age of 15 by 2030.”
Yet Pollard says it’ll likely be decades before we see the true impact on cervical cancer because so many women have already been infected. “What we’re doing is buying lives today that would have been lost in the future,” he says.
But he and other experts agree that it would be transformative—and provides more equity in the global healthcare system.
“In Africa, every family knows a woman who has suffered from this cancer. And this is an ugly cancer. It’s one that leads to a painful and somewhat dehumanizing end for these women," Widmyer says. For those living in higher-income countries, he adds, “the privilege of not knowing somebody who has died this way is pretty unique.”

50 from the general list + Matsukawa
Ty so much for the request, anon!
send me a prompt with your fav character here :)
50. “I didn’t know where else to go.”
Synopsis: You were just a few minutes away from closing when Matsukawa Issei comes into your flower shop asking for a big favor
Word count: 1.2k
Warnings: aged up characters, mentions of death
The amount of symbolism that could be found in nature was something that you always thought to be intriguing. Lush green shrubbery and foliage would have one thinking of life and vitality, mountain ranges represent strength and foundation; hundreds of messages that the earth could teach if only one was willing to listen.
And perhaps it was this thought that drawn you to flowers in the first place. Flowers, by definition, are simply just the seed-bearing part of a plant. Even so, each variation of its petals, each different color, different shape, all hold their own special meaning.
A red rose may symbolize love and romance, yet a yellow rose symbolizes friendship. A white carnation wishes someone luck, but a pink carnation will show someone gratitude.
You could spend your whole life studying flowers; their origins, biology, cultural significance, and you will always discover something new.
It was this very idea that drove you to open up your very own flower shop. Your days were spent practicing different arrangements, nitpicking different flowers and herbs to convey different message.
Red roses, red chrysanthemums, white clover ; I love you, I hope you’re thinking of me
White hyacinth, sweet basil, bells of ireland ; I’m sending you prayers and strength
Standing behind your counter, you were starting to close up your shop and reading through your orders for the following day when you heard the bell above your door ring, signaling the arrival of a customer.
In quickly walks a tall man with messy black hair and thick eyebrows, fairly big in build, and sporting a slightly panicked expression as he approached your counter.
“W-welcome,” you stuttered out, “how can I help you?”
“Hi, I’m Matsukawa Issei, I’m the director at the funeral home across the street,” he introduced himself, and slowly his face began to spark some recognition.
“Ah yes, Matsukawa-san,” you greeted, setting down the floral tape and scissors you were holding, “To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit today?”
He slowly rubbed the back of his neck, fidgeting nervously in his spot before he spoke. “I’m sorry, I know you’re about to close but I didn’t know where else to go. My usual contractor flaked on me last minute and I was hoping to pick up some flower arrangements for a funeral.”
You wiped your hands on your apron, pulling out a notepad and pen from your pocket. “When did you need these by?”
Matsukawa visibly grimaced. “Tomorrow morning.”
Your hands stilled, looking up to give him a pointed look.
He quickly raised up his hands. “Look, I know, I’m sorry. It’s just really important to me that this family gets a proper arrangement,” he sighed out, running a tired hand through his hair, “I’ll pay double.”
You crossed your arms, tapping a finger against your elbow as you scrutinized the funeral director. He looked tired, dark circles under his eyes, shirt wrinkled and shoulders tensed.
“I’m desperate,” he pleaded with his eyes, setting two hands down on your counter and meeting your gaze.
“Alright,” you slowly conceded, “I’ll do my best, but you’ll have to make do with whatever flowers I have in-house.”
You didn’t miss the little fist pump of victory he did at your agreement, but you turn your attention back to the notepad laying on the counter.
“Can you tell me more about the deceased?”
You were shocked at the level of detail Matsukawa was able to tell you about the dearly departed. He was an old man who finally passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. He had three children, and seven grandchildren who spent every Sunday having dinner together with him and his wife. He often liked to fish and his biggest catch was an eighty-pound albacore tuna. He was a serious man who appreciated anyone that was able to make him laugh with a good pun.
“Did you know this family personally, Matsukawa-san?” You asked, jotting down the last bit of information.
“No,” he answered, smiling sadly, “But I always like to meet with the families beforehand. You know, offer counsel and give them a chance to tell stories about their loved ones.”
You felt a pang in your heart at the thought. “That’s actually very thoughtful, Matsukawa-san.”
“Just call me Issei, miss...?”
“Y/N.”
“Y/N-san,” he reiterated, “And I can’t thank you enough. I really appreciate you doing this for me. You sure your boss won’t mind you keeping the shop open late?”
“I don’t think so,” you replied, walking over to the fridge to check on your supply of Lilies, “Considering I’m the owner of the shop.”
Matsukawa raised one thick eyebrow. “Oh? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to assume. You just seem a bit young to own your own flower shop.”
You laughed, shrugging a little as you replied, “I know, I get that that a lot.”
“So do I,” he chuckled lowly, taking his hands off the counter and putting them in his pocket.
“True, you don’t see many fit young men choose to be in your profession,” you commented, mentally slapping yourself for calling him fit. The smirk on his face tells you he didn’t mind it, so you continue, “What made you choose this career?”
His expression softened, looking off to the side as if he were wondering the answer to the question himself. Still, he replied, “I just want to make sure that every family that walks into my funeral home is able to have one last, proper goodbye to their loved ones.”
His answer made you smile, the simplistic nature of it making you slightly admire the messy-haired young man.
“How about you?” He asked, “It’s not very often a fit young woman like yourself would choose to be in this profession.”
You blushed at his repetition of your words, choosing to ignore it and maintain some semblance of dignity.
“Flowers have the ability to deliver messages that some people are unable to say out loud,” you try to explain, “They’re like a physical manifestation of our feelings. You could spend all day and night playing with different flowers and herbs and colors and species, and come up with a different message every time. Each bouquet is personal, whether they’re given or received. I just want to spend my days helping people express themselves in ways they can’t on their own...”
You looked up after your tangent to Matsukawa’s mouth hanging slightly agape, giving you a curious look and you’re left worried that you might have said too much.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to blabber on like that, I just -“
“No, it’s fine,” he interrupted, offering you a soft smile, “I think that’s beautiful, y/n-san.”
You blushed, gathering up a bundle of Gladiolus for remembrance, “Thank you, Issei-san.”
A silent beat passes between the two of you, Matsukawa looking as if he wanted to say something.
“Thank you, again,” he finally said, though something tells you that’s not what was on his mind, “You’re a lifesaver.”
You offered him a smile. “The arrangements will be ready tomorrow morning.”
He nodded, offering a small wave goodbye as he made his way out the store. The smile didn’t leave your face the rest of the night, your encounter with Matsukawa Issei replaying over and over as you gingerly reached for the bundle of thyme, hoping it will give the mourning family strength.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
(Issei comes to pick up the arrangements, exchanging the grand bouquet with a lavender Rose.
Love at first sight.
A knowing smile spread across your lips, teasingly remarking, “Buying from my competitors?”
He smirks and shakes his head, “No, I plucked it from my neighbor’s garden.”)

Arguments of Concern - Part Three
The love I got on ‘escapism’ was so great, thank you so much <3
I also don’t remember much of the beach scene so ignore inaccuracies pls lol
WORD COUNT: 2105
Tumblr media
[PART ONE] [PART TWO]
Adam was fast asleep on (Y/N)’s lap as Tommy drove them towards Margate. He was excited when he was told that he was going on a trip to the beach and spent the first couple of hours excitedly chatting and asking his parents a hundred questions before he became bored and tired, allowing his parents to spend the remaining hour of the journey to talk without the chance of having little ears overhearing anything that was said.
Whilst their relationship had slightly improved compared to before, (Y/N) was still bitter at Tommy for getting involved with Mosley and subsequently dragging them into the mess too. Adam was her number one priority and despite how much she hated the idea of it, she would take him and leave Tommy if she needed to. Tommy was the love of her life and has provided her with everything she could ever need but slowly the bad was overtaking the good and she didn’t think she could just watch from the sidelines anymore.
Tommy’s hand on her thigh brought her out of her thoughts,
“You okay?”
“Hmm, just thinking about this mysterious friend of yours” (Y/N) teased, pulling his hand off her thigh before lacing their fingers together.
Tommy brought their conjoined hands up and pressed a kiss on the back of her hand, “Don’t want to ruin the surprise.”
“The surprise...” (Y/N) scoffed, “Don’t tell me it’s one of your old flings or girlfriends?”
Tommy snorted a laugh, “If I did that, I wouldn’t have to worry about Mosley killing me since I know you’d kill me before he’d even get a chance.”
(Y/N) made a vague noise of distress before she pulled her hand free of his and whacked him on the arm,
“Don’t joke about dying” She scolded him.
“ ‘m sorry.”
“No, you’re not.”
“No, I’m not.” Tommy threw her a smirk and wink causing her to giggle.
If (Y/N) tried her hardest briefly forget about the actual reason why they were going to Margate, she could pretend that they were just taking a small holiday as a family.
“When all this is over, we’ll go away somewhere. You, me and Adam. Just the three of us eh?” Tommy spoke up after a few moments, glancing at her.
“Hmm, we can go to Wales or Ireland.”
Tommy smiled at her, “We could stay in a caravan. Adam would enjoy it.”
(Y/N) bit her lip before she spoke again, slightly hesitating, “When this is done...you’ll take a step back right? From the more dangerous stuff?”
Tommy sighed “(Y/N)...”
(Y/N) also sighed, “I’m not being unreasonable Tommy, I’m not telling to completely stop with the illegal side of the business. All I’m asking is to not get involved in dangerous situations with dangerous people like you have nothing to lose, because you do Tommy. You have us.”
“We’ll talk more about it when everything is over.”
(Y/N) simply nodded, not wanting to fight and wake Adam.
They had arrived at Margate now, driving right by the coast, no doubt close to their final destination.
“It’s gorgeous.” (Y/N) gasped as she peered out of the window, gazing at the beach and at the people making the most of the end of the summer heat before autumn fully settled in. The scent of the salty air and the sound of the seagulls made (Y/N) smile, she found the place somewhat calming.
Five minutes later and they were pulling into the drive of a mansion and even though the hedges were preventing her view, (Y/N) knew they were still close to the seafront as she could still hear the crashing of the waves and the faint sound of people.
Tommy got out of the car first and made his way over to her side of the car and opened the door for her. (Y/N) missed the figure step out of the mansion and make his way down the stairs that were in front of the mansion as she tried to step out of the car with Adam in her arms.
“Here lemme take him.” Tommy took Adam in his arms, the young boy still fast asleep. As grew older, he also grew heavier meaning that (Y/N) couldn’t hold him for long periods of time, making her miss the days where he was tiny and never wanted to leave her arms.
“Mrs Shelby! It’s wonda-ful to see ya lovely face again, shame you brought ya husband along with you though.”
(Y/N) whipped around to where the voice came from, instantly recognising it. She couldn’t believe her eyes and when she looked back at Tommy to make sure that she wasn’t hallucinating, she received a nod that told her that he was real.
“Alfie? Jesus Christ…” (Y/N) murmured as she made her way over to him.
Her eyes caught on the large scar on his face, “What happened to you? Tommy only told me you had died.”
“Oh, this thing ‘ere?” Alfie pointed at his scar, “Yea well, you can blame your husband for tha’”
“You asked me to kill you, Alfie.” Tommy sounded like he’d had this conversation many times before.
“You what?!”
“In my defence luv, I did think I was going to die anyway.”
“I...uh..” (Y/N) was speechless.
“I’ll explain  when we get inside.” Tommy told her as he moved to stand next to her.
Alfie’s eyes catch on Adam who was clinging on to his father in his sleep, “If it isn’t little Tommy Jr, he’s grown a lot hasn’t he?”
Alfie had only met Adam once when he had visited Tommy at the house, (Y/N) had just come home from a walk with a then two-year old Adam when Adam had run into Tommy office to say hello to his father. Alfie had immediately taken note of how similar the father and son looked and the started to call Adam, ‘Tommy Jr’. (Y/N) was pretty sure that he had only done it to annoy Tommy, which it did- not that Alfie would ever find out.
“I think we need to talk, don’t we? Let’s head inside yeah” Alfie led them into their house and sent his maid off the make them some tea.
Tommy placed Adam on the couch so that he was laying down before taking a seat next to him and (Y/N) sat on Tommy’s other side so that he was in the middle.
“Right, so what happened?” (Y/N) asked as she shrugged off her coat.
Alfie a slightly guilty expression on his face but Tommy began talking before she could question him.
“Remember the boxing match a few years ago?” Tommy asked his wife
(Y/N) sat up slightly, “When you were dealing with the Italians? Yeah, why?”
“Alfie had betrayed us-- me and sent Changretta’s men undercover as his to kill me, except they attacked Arthur instead.”
(Y/N) stared at Alfie, gobsmacked, “I..why would you do that? Actually, why am I surprised, you’ve betrayed us before!”
Alfie just winced and kept silent.
“And so when I went to confront him, he tells me that he’s suffering from skin cancer but he wanted to go out his own way--”
“He wanted you to kill him?” (Y/N) caught on.
“I didn’t wan’ to die because of fuckin’ cancer. The doctor said that I most likely got it from the trenches in the war and that’s not how I wanted to die. He also said that it would be painful and long an’ that’s no way for a gangster to go out is it?” There was both pain and anger in Alfie’s voice.
“So you betrayed Tommy because you knew that he would kill you?”
Alfie nodded, “(Y/N)...I wanted it to be quick and painless. I didn’t want to die from cancer.”
“Oh, Alfie.” (Y/N)’s heart hurt for him.
“I didn’t want to shoot him at first but then he shot at me so I shot at him back.”
“You got shot?! You told me you were dealing with Arthur after he had one of his episodes.”
“If I told you I got shot, you would have killed me.” Tommy smiled at his wife.
“You’re absolutely right.”
Whines and grunts came from Adam as he slowly woke up, his body shuffling against Alfie’s couch. (Y/N) couldn’t help but laugh as he sat up, his face was puffy and his hair was a mess, there was also a frown marring his face, clearly not appreciating the fact that he had been woken up.
“Mama?” He croaked as he crawled over Tommy and into her arms.
“Hello poppet, did you have a nice nap?” (Y/N) ran her fingers through his hair, trying to tame it.
“Uh-huh, I had a dream that there was a big lion but dada saved us before it could eat us!”
“Dada saved us? How lucky are we huh” (Y/N) pressed a kiss to his forehead
“Here, drink this Adam” Tommy passed Adam a glass of water that he easily gulped down.
Feeling refreshed and no longer tired, Adam twisted on (Y/N)’s lap but froze at the sight of Alfie sat opposite them.
“Hello there, I’m Alfie Solomons.” Alfie lent forward and held his hand out.
Adam silently stared before leaning forward and shaking his hand “I’m Adam Shelby.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr Shelby.”
Adam paused before he spoke again, “What happened to your face?”
“Adam!” (Y/N) hissed but she didn’t know why she was surprised, he was a kid and kids were curious.
“Nahh it’s orright, he’s fine. I had an accident and hurt myself”
“Did it hurt?”
“For a bit, yeah, but I’m fine now”
“Okay!” That seemed to satisfy Adam who no longer seemed interested anymore.
Tommy shifted as he pulled his watch out of his pocket and sighed when he checked the time, “I have to go.”
“We’ve just got here.” (Y/N) whispered, upset.
“Do you like ships Adam?” (Y/N) smiled at Alfie, knowing that his plan was to distract Adam so that she could talk to Tommy.
“I don’t think he’s ever seen one.” (Y/N) laughed.
“If we’re lucky we can see one from the balcony, wanna see if can see any?”
Adam looked up to his parents for permission, excited at the prospect at seeing ships. (Y/N) and Tommy nodded and he eagerly jumped up off of (Y/N)’s lap and allowed Alfie to take him to the balcony.
“Can you not stay any longer?” (Y/N) asked her husband.
“I wish I could. You have no idea how much I want to stay with you and Adam and hide from everything back home.” Tommy pressed his head against hers and wiped away the tears that slowly began to fall down her cheeks.
“You must come back to me. You must come back to us because I don’t know how I survive if you’re dead.” (Y/N) sobbed.
“I will come back to you but if something does happen then you must promise to do what we planned yeah? You take Adam and you go.”
“Thomas!”
“Promise me (Y/N)” Tommy made sure she was looking at him in the eye as he made her promise.
“I promise. I promise you, Tommy. If something happens, I’ll take Adam and go.”
“Good.” Tommy pressed a kiss to (Y/N)’s lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too. I love you so much, Tommy.” (Y/N) kissed him back and they continued kissing before Tommy pulled away and stepped back.
“Adam, come say bye to dada!” (Y/N) called out so that Adam could hear her from the balcony.
“Bye? Why?” Adam wondered in with Alfie’s binoculars in his hands.
Tommy knelt down in front of him, “Dada has to go back home for a bit but I’ll be back soon, okay?”
Adam frowned but nevertheless nodded, “Can we see the ships together when you come back?”
“Of course. We’ll go to the beach as well okay?”
Adam grinned excitedly and hugged Tommy, “Okay. See you soon! Love you!”
Tommy tightly wrapped his arms around Adam and kissed the side of his head. “Love you too”
Alfie took Adam back outside while (Y/N) followed Tommy to the car to say one more goodbye.
“Come back to me okay?”
“I will. I love you.” Tommy gave her one last kiss before getting into the car.
“I love you too.” (Y/N) said before Tommy drove away.

The beautiful, breathtaking talent that is Andrew Scott reads for us ‘Everything is Going to be All Right’ by Derek Mahon. Andrew has asked to dedicate this to Men Against Cancer Ireland @/menagainstcancer Andrew we salute you! 🕺
It comes under the prescription for need for reassurance. Here’s how it reads as written in the book @/thepoetrypharmacy @/thepoetryremedy
There are moments in life when the banal suddenly, and quite without warning, becomes the transcendent. Perhaps a shaft of afternoon light paints a familiar view an unfamiliar gold; perhaps dust in a sunbeam or the dance of sparks above a fire transport you, for a long instant, to somewhere else altogether. The almost magical-seeming reflections of ripples on a ceiling are transfixing in just the same way.
In moments like these- awe-struck moments when the ferocious beauty of the everyday catches us unawares- we are often moved to a reassessment. One flash of sunlight can be all it takes to give us the sense of possibility that can change everything. As a great sufferer from depression myself, I find a small moment like this, a sudden splash of serenity and beauty, can provide the impetus needed to run my mood around. Not completely, perhaps, and not permanently- but sometimes a small push is all any of us is waiting for.
Derek Mahon’s poem ‘Everything is Going to be All Right’ describes wonderfully the feeling of that little push and reassessment. And there’s something hugely powerful, too, about its final line. When my children are suffering and I hold them in my arms, it seems to be the most natural mantra in the world: Everything will be all right. There’s a comfort to those words, whether or not they’ll prove to be true. OF course, some wounds don’t heal, and some wrongs go un-righted. But in the grander sense, in the everything sense, things to tend to be all right.
Too often, our pain is either in our heads or magnified beyond all proportion. If we can learn to manage it, if we can find that oasis of calm in the reflection of the waves, then we might find that out problems are not as all-consuming as we imagined.
Thank you thank you Andrew! 😘

Each year we publish a roundup of bi events at the end of December. Naturally this one will be a little less packed than usual. Nonetheless wishing you a very different and better year ahead! At the start of the year very few of us realised what might be ahead as the COVID-19 virus was still thought to be far away and most likely confined to a corner of China. So for those first ten weeks or so of 2020 things were happening as normal. So it was at the start of January when Layla Moran became the first UK MP to come out as pansexual. Courts compensated a worker who had been told to pretend to be gay rather than bi in the workplace and returned confiscated medals to an ex serviceman. Northern Ireland started to consult on same-sex marriage while we learned women are more likely to divorce one another than men. There was good news on HIV figures and from the European Court declaring that government inaction on LGBTphobic hate was no longer acceptable. And the Welsh Government declared it would go a step further than merely repealing Section 28 with active work to ensure children are making informed choices on sex and relationships. In February Bi Pride got a mention in the House, while LGBT History Month saw many more bi-related talks than usual. Overseas Switzerland voted to recognise LGBT hate crimes. There were bis on TV in Doctors and I Am Not OK With This as well as a new season of Atypical to look forward to. And new research showed peculiar findings about bi people and skin cancer.
With the pandemic seeing the start of lockdown in the UK during March events started to be cancelled like Birmingham BiFest and BiFest Wales. As Prides started to fall like dominoes, Eurovision announced its first ever rollover winner. In the USA a St Patrick’s Day parade barred a beauty pageant winner from marching on account of her bisexuality. We had more bi representation on TV in Love Is Blind’s demonstration of double-standards over bisexuality, BBC polyamory drama Trigonometry, and Batwoman. The House of Commons held its first ever debate on LBT women’s health while Canada declared its intention to outlaw so-called “gay cure” so-called “therapy”. And new figures showed more people identifying as bi in the UK than ever.
In April many of us were starting to get used to life indoors and wondering how much a loo roll could fetch on eBay there were sobering thoughts about how the lockdown meant a lot of bi and LGBT people were now trapped in unsafe situations. The USA responded by relaxing its limitations on bi and gay men donating blood with Australia contemplating the same shift. The first LGBT club closure of the pandemic was announced in Brighton. On TV we had a raft of fresh bi viewing with the return of Flack, Killing Eve and Harley Quinn. But the big bi drama of the month was away from TV as BiNetUSA abruptly tried to claim copyright over the public domain bisexual flag.
Most LGBT magazines stopped publishing for the time being due to the pandemic but we took the decision to keep BCN coming out as one little strand of bi life we could keep fairly normal, so our April edition was the second of six in 2020.
Staying indoors gave people some time to organise and so in May there were online campaigns about the blood donation ban and conversion therapy. Being indoors also meant people could virtually visit museums worldwide. New research showed bi men were the most closeted group across Europe.
As the Black Lives Matter movement drew headlines worldwide in June dating app Grindr dropped its race filter. One of those “how did that take so long?” moments. There was a big victory in the US Supreme Court, while over here a new faux LGB equality campaign group came out against same-sex marriage, for anyone who hadn’t already realised they weren’t on the side of any queer folks. The BBC nonetheless carried on quoting them as if they were a serious human rights campaign. The annual Bi Book Awards winners were announced, though without (for now) the usual glamorous awards event. The Grammys got their tongue tied online. In good news, Gabon decriminalised sex between women and between men and Scotland opened up civil partnerships to any couple regardless of gender. BiCon had a bumpy month with two organising teams quitting in the space of a week.
In July we had more happy news from abroad as Montenegro recognised same-sex civil partnerships and South Africa changed its rules on how marriage ceremonies are conducted. It was less good elsewhere as the budget for PrEP was cut in the UK and in Poland the presidential election came down to a knife-edge before going the wrong way. We learned bis have worse experiences of crime than other people and the GLAAD annual review of film releases noted cinema was getting Whiter and gayer, with no bi male representation in major film releases.
We are used to a host of Prides in August so it was a hot summer with so much less to do every Saturday! However some ran online and BiCon happened in a very slimmed-down online form. The run-up to Bi Visibility Day began with more Town Halls deciding to fly the bi flag. New US research showed bi youth experience of bullying.
It’s Bi Visibility Day, Bi Week and Bi Month in September and among the delights was improvements in dictionary definitions. Northern Ireland inched further forward on equality while the UK courts rules that the Equality Act includes nonbinary people. Coming-out guide Getting Bi came out for the Kindle. In the USA we saw the first research on how the COVID-19 pandemic was hitting the LGBT communities while here Stonewall had research on how many bis are out to their families – not many.
In October we learned there would be a biopic of former US Congresswoman Katie Hill. Netflix dropped GLOW. In good news for millions the Pope made a small shift toward a better attitude to LGBT lives on the part of the Catholic Church. And in bad news here, a BBC which was veering increasingly far from balanced and responsible reporting of LGBT issues warned staff they should not attend Pride events even in their own time and private lives.
All eyes were on the USA in November as Donald Trump lost by a huge margin in the election there – albeit not as wide a margin as many opinion polls had predicted. Biden won with over 80 million votes in the end – more than any previous candidate. Biden’s speech missed out the “B”. Europe considered its next five year plan on LGBT work without the UK, and in Poland there were symbolic protests against the hateful “LGBT free zone” populists. We all realised we had been too distracted by COVID to notice that the LGBT inclusion work in schools that had started under the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition had been quietly dropped by the new minister for Women and Equalities.
Most important, COVID vaccines started to be approved. After a very hard year, change was at last in sight.
In December the three month ban on blood donation for bi and gay men and their partners was completely rewritten – for better and for worse – though the new rules don’t come in until a few months into 2021. Kyrsten Sinema rocked a great wig and coat in Washington. There was divine justice as a homophobic MEP got caught breaking COVID rules at a gay party. And Switzerland – whose good news on hate crime kicked the year off – decided to let same-sex couples marry. And so ILGA’s annual world map of LGBT rights showed a ripple of changes. And our fifth edition of the pandemic landed on subscriber doormats, more or less in time for Christmas.
That was 2020. To our most sincere delight, it is in the past. Here’s to a very different year ahead.

Tag Game
I was tagged by @radiobribri , who would like to better get to know her followers! Personally, I love that she's interested in getting to know us and there a few blogs I'd like to get to know better too!
Zodiac: Aries
Height: 5′5-5'6
Put your playlist on shuffle and list the first four songs:
Things We Said Today - The Beatles
Start All Over - Miley Cyrus (Been on a big childhood nostalgia kick lately)
I Get Around - The Beach Boys
All Together Now - The Beatles
Grab the nearest book and turn to page 23 - what does line 17 say?
"When I talk to her... Words have no meaning." Fruits Basket Collector's Edition Vol. 7 by Natsuki Takaya (closest thing I had next to me so I just chose a random line.)
When was the last time you played air guitar?
The other month? Idk XD
What is one sound you hate and one sound you love?
Hate - I cannot STAND the sound of slurping and things like knives scraping against plates, makes me cringe so bad.
Love - Definitely cats purring and a crackling fireplace
Do you believe in ghosts?
Yes and no, I definitely believe that there are some spirits hanging around out there in the world but I don't know if I'd specifically classify them as ghosts.
Do you believe in aliens?
Sure? Like obviously if microorganisms are considered aliens, then absolutely. As far as little green men, I have no idea. Definitely hoping for the existence of some sexy-ass Spock aliens though X3
Do you drive? Have you ever gotten into an accident? Yep! Got my license last October although I'm a little embarrassed to admit I was 19 at the time *coughs* A license wasn't really my priority. And thankfully no ^^;
Do you like the smell of gasoline?
YES, as weird as it may sound, I love it. I grew up living on the lake and my parents would quite often take me out with them on our boat so the smell of gasoline reminds me of filling up the boat at the marina and my childhood.
Do you have an obsession right now?
Yes ^^; Fruits Basket, thanks to this reboot lol
In a relationship?
Yep! Been with my boyfriend for four years now.
1. Name: Stephanie
2. Nicknames: Steph and Stephie although I can't stand those.
3. Height: 5′5-5'6
4. Orientation: Ehhhh, straight? It's complicated. I think women are attractive and I was in a really short relationship with my former best friend but pretty sure it was a one time only thing. Thinking about being in a relationship or ever being physical with a girl just makes me feel a little queasy at this point but that's just me.
5. Nationality: American
6. Favorite fruits: Strawberries but I really like any fruit as long as it's in season.
7. Favorite season: Fall
8. Favorite plant: I'm a basic bitch; roses and lavender.
9. Favorite scent: I love the smell my boyfriend has; we're long distance so that sensation just helps cement the realness of him. Otherwise, generic scent would probably be rose atm
10. Favorite color: Purple; lavender and lilac
11. Favorite animal: Cats or dogs, depends on the mood
12. Tea, coffee or hot chocolate: Tea if we're talking Teavana, otherwise hot chocolate
13. Average hours of sleep: 4-10 hours, varies.
14. Dogs or cats: I don't knowwww
15. Favorite fictional character:
This is unfair. I have too many.
Kyo, Tohru, and Yuki; Fruits Basket
Belle and Adam; Beauty and the Beast
Jakob/Joker; Fire Emblem IF
16. Dream trip: Would love to visit England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and Japan.
17. When was your blog created: 4-5 years ago?
18. Number of followers: 74, mostly mutuals
19. Random fact: Childhood cancer survivor, yay!!
20. Best Friend(s)?: By bestie, Annaliese and my boyfriend. I'm pretty introverted and selective when it comes to friends so I don't have many.
I’m tagging @romeo-and-antoinette , @casafrass, and @mccartneysguitar Feel free to ignore if you’ve already done this or aren’t into!
