Summary: “Oh, well. I’m sorry. I wasn’t expecting the craftsman to be on the main floor.”
“Were you expecting me to be working by candle light with my anvil and hammer? Possibly be drinking some mead and shaping horseshoes out in the back shed?" Erik remarks making Charles feel a little more embarrassed and frustrated as he was when he walked in.
“Honestly, this isn’t the Middle-effing ages.” Erik scoffs to himself and rolls his eyes.
Rec notes: One where Erik is a metalsmith/artist (and a bit of a jerk). Charles goes to him to commission a wedding gift for Raven. They get off on the wrong foot but Erik turns out to be a friend of Raven’s and agrees to the task. Despite their differences, they end up growing closer.

Background: Part I
part i: Vil’s homeland in the Land of Pyroxene part ii: after leaving Bergfreiheit with Erik, childhood, convicted, and enrolling in nrc  part iii: life in Savanaclaw before his transfer to Pomefiore

Vil’s hometown is loosely based around Bergfreiheit, a former mining village that produced copper and iron ore. Despite his presently flashy attitude, Vil’s background is actually quite humble as he came from a middle-class family from the village. More specifically, he’s from a family of gemstone cutters. Most of the villagers were miners and live off it as the village itself were surrounded by copper mines.
Since he was young, Vil grew up with metal, making him now an excellent alchemist and potion maker in NRC. Gemstone cutting has been his family business for a long time until his father decided to move out of the village to find a new life in the world outside. Vil followed in his father’s footsteps, he couldn’t help idolising him a little when he was a boy. And since they were each other’s only immediate family, they moved out from the village together to start a career in modelling and acting. Vil seldom pays his hometown visits, although he might not have any particularly strong opinion about it. He’s, however, grateful for what growing up in his hometown had taught him about gemstone cutting and metalsmithing.
In episode 5 Rook tried to explain to Vil how Epel can still ‘shine’ inside using gemstones as a reference. I believe Rook’s trying to explain his opinions in terms that are more familiar and relatable to Vil to make sure he gets it.
