"Kihnu Naine & the Summer Solstice" Beautiful and sensitive mural by #aaronglasson for #Mextonia Festival created by #nuevearteurbano and #todoesuno in Tallinn, Estonia #visitestonia #tbt #throwbackthursday • The piece is about Kihnu, an Island to the south of Estonia that has a long and delicate relationship with the sea and outside world. Kihnu is regarded as one of the world’s last remaining matriarchal societies. Its economy is reliant on the island’s men, who spend most of their time fishing the Baltic Sea. Kihnu women work in the fields, raise the children, and essentially run the island. They’re also responsible for passing down centuries-old traditions to the island’s younger generations such as song, dance, and their colorful symbolic weaving. While many of Estonia's indigenous cultures were lost during the centuries of occupations and invasions, Kihnu persevered. The mural depicts three Kihnu women during summer the solstice. The central figure is Kihnu Virve a well known folk singer from the Island, another looks on at the summer solstice tradition of burning a boat while one levitates within a double helix of herring. The concept being that like countless other island societies Kihnu is intertwined with the sea and dependent on a healthy marine eco-system for its survival. There are many external factors such as industrial fishing, pollution and climate change that threaten Kihnu's endurance into the future. Ocean conservation not only concerns the sea. It's also about the preservation of cultures, lively hoods, and ultimately human conservation.

Here is his piece 'Kalevipoeg's first flight' for #Mextonia Festival created by #nuevearteurbano and #todoesuno in Tallinn, Estonia • Amazing pic by #yoshi_travel • The mural focusses on the Estonian Sea Eagle, a majestic bird currently under threat due to mans interference and loss of habitat. Throughout history Eagles have been seen as symbols of great strength, leadership and vision. The Eagle is often viewed as the chief over all winged creatures, as apex predators of the sky, they have the ability to fly higher than any other bird. Because of this, ancient cultures believe the Eagle delivers a message of man’s connection to the divine and the natural world around us. A message of renewed life, stamina and resilience to endure through difficulties, bestowing freedom and courage to look ahead and accomplish what may seem unachievable. The mural also represents Kalev's Son, a legendary giant character that believed to have founded Estonia flying to these lands on the back of a majestic eagle.
