Note
Metal gear for the funny meme 👀
oh this is a good one. i absolutely cant wait to be run right out of town for my objectively correct opinions
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
kazuhira miller my beloved.... the best boy in this series. he has never done a single thing wrong and id give him all the money in my bank account to watch him eat a cheeseburger
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
big boss. my brother my silly rabbit my left hand arm man . you are so stupid that you are the smartest man in the world
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
miss eva..... the ggirlboss that pairs so well with my scrunkly
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
uhhhhhhhhh. damn i got nothing for this one actually.
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
dont have one of these either i have good taste
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
raiden always raiden. mgs2 was a mistake and through his existence mgs4 also became a mistake. i hate him so bad
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
ggiving this slot to both ocelot and liquid because i couldnt decide which one i hated more individually . they can both burn though. i hope they both have an ibs episode and shit themselves loudly at a wedding

speck's mgs bookmark highlight reel - fic recs
speck || team philanthropy || c1 || 15 fics, 5 pts each
Trigger Safety - Otacon/Solid Snake (18+)
An incredibly well-written three-part PWP set right after Shadow Moses; tender and warm without being overly saccharine or out-of-character. Opts for a much quicker burn (in the grand scheme of things) than a lot of interpretations, but the whole relationship still feels very genuine and natural.
Call on Line Two - Otacon/Solid Snake (18+)
Otasune phone/codec sex is a personal favourite for whatever reason, and this set up in particular gets me. Something about Snake effectively slipping and falling headfirst into a sex chatline and just going with it is so in-character and charming.
Sunflower Seed - Otacon/Solid Snake
Esoteric little fic about Sunny, her little family, and the fragility of it all; explores different timelines where things fall apart, one where things are good, and one where things are right–where the Jupiter Family gets the ending they always deserved.
Rest - Otacon/Solid Snake
Set post-MGS4; marriage in the characteristically atypical way that Snake and Otacon do everything. Sunny asks the innocent question of why Snake and Otacon don’t have wedding bands, and maybe giving Hal something physical to remember him by isn’t the worst idea. A little morbid humour and a lot of quiet, tender affection.
Love, and Its Consequential, Untimely Death - Otacon/Solid Snake
This author in particular has a knack for writing fantastic, natural-sounding dialogue between these two, managing to constantly balance funny and sweet with heavier and more serious. This little fic really exemplifies that as it explores both Snake and Otacon’s past relationships as a backdrop for their current relationship.
Knock Before Entering - Otacon/Solid Snake (18+)
There’s something unbelievably funny about accidentally training yourself to get aroused whenever Die Hard is on. Also, Raiden spends the night and gets an earful of something everyone would rather pretend he didn’t.
Dry-Fire - Otacon/Solid Snake (18+)
Nothing quite like a spindly weeaboo dominating a burly man genetically-engineered for his combat prowess as a way to work through emotions. Thotty Snake is wonderful, but it’s really how well Otacon takes to being in control that makes it for me. Just some good ol’ fashioned smut with some emotional weight and plot to it; scratches a very particular itch. Very hot, very good. Just like in Ghostbusters indeed, Hal (whatever the hell that means).
If You Go Into the Woods - Otacon/Solid Snake (18+)
Punishment for thoughtlessness comes in the form of a bear trap snapping closed on Otacon’s leg and a dead dog. Hurt/comfort two-part fic written in fantastic prose with some of the most organic pacing I’ve read in a fic this short. Snake’s characterization in particular is fantastic, equal parts severe and tender.
One Last Goodbye - Otacon/Solid Snake
A fic about Strangelove’s “legacy”, the idea of “preserving” somebody as an AI after death, and how it works as a means of coping and mourning for Otacon post-MGS4. Ouch.
Run From Their Company - Otacon/Solid Snake (18+)
AU, a split in the timeline where Snake and Otacon meet a little earlier under drastically different circumstances. The tension between them is fantastically written, and I really appreciate how Otacon develops throughout the whole thing in particular. Satisfying–the whole thing is just very satisfying.
Dear Dave - Otacon/Solid Snake
A post-MGS4 otasune fic written in the form of letters from Otacon to a man no longer alive. Focused mainly on grief and mourning and moving on. Difficult for me to put into words why it gets me like it does, but this is the fic that makes me bawl almost every line, every chapter, all the way through. Truly one of the most brutal yet beautifully written things I’ve read in a while. Ouch.
Judas Kiss - Big Boss/Kazuhira Miller (18+)
Simultaneously one of the most phenomenally written and gut-wrenching bbkaz fics I’ve read. Much of it focuses on how exactly Kaz perceives and tries to understand Big Boss, and the way Kaz’s thought process is portrayed feels very sincere and legitimate. Definitely heed the consent warnings for this one.
Shot Me Down - Big Boss/Ocelot (18+)
A surprisingly warm and fuzzy post-MGS3 bosselot fit about adjusting to civilian life, set in late 1960s New York. Big Boss is charmingly obtuse, and Ocelot… does his best with what he has to work with; Para-Medic provides dating advice with no context to go off. This thing is the reason “Stupid Cupid” is always going to be an Ocelot song in my heart. It’s good.
Thank You For Nothing at All - Emma Emmerich
For however brief her appearance was, I really did like Emma Emmerich, and it’s nice to see her get some attention. This fic expands upon what little we know of her from snippets in MGS2, spanning from her rebuking a sexual advance from Julie’s husband and running away all the way to the Big Shell incident.
Vis-a-Vis - Kazuhira Miller/Ocelot
There is quite simply nothing more lovely than two people who don’t like each other having to suck it up and deal with it in the context of a roadtrip. Light on the actual romance, but a hell of a lot of fun to watch Kaz repeatedly try to get a leg up on Ocelot and repeatedly fail.

Selfship Positivity Day: 4
I, once again, am not feeling too great so I hope none of you mind if I try to keep this short, sweet, and all in one piece. I also hope that you're having a terrific day and are getting all the love you deserve!! TLDR: THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE
I guess you can say that I've always been self shipping because I can still remember sitting at the desktop computer upstairs in my old home and typing in pink font about being friends with and having a few of the guys from my favorite childhood show fall in love with me. (Thank goodness that computer got bricked and trashed!) I was taught at a young age the difference of reality from fiction and due to having a brother who was 6 years older than me, I always kept quiet about it since I still hoped that someone, somewhere was having these Fantastical Adventures and that one day I would be able to join in on them!
Daydreaming was always a way for me to feel better from the less than lovely aspects of my life. Hell, my mom even encouraged it after she and dad (and my brother some times) would have another very loud argument. It's good to see about some things don't change (referring to how daydreaming can help me feel better from that, of course!) I never really grew out of it since I always kept up the boundary of fiction and reality but as I grew older, I just got quieter about it until I only daydreamed in my head to fit in like everyone else, I had enough to make me stand out.
But I started getting back into it in terms of, "I'm gonna love that character myself!" when I was 10 or 11. My brother had picked up a copy of MGS4 as his one Christmas present that year, and seeing how I was the younger sibling I tagged along with his adventures to occupy myself. I was dealing with a lot at the time in terms of more family dysfunction, homelessness, severe bullying from my peers at school, a lot of toxicity from reaching out to the wrong strangers online, plus this is when my dysphoria due to cerebral palsy really started to manifest itself. So when the cyborg-ninja Raiden was introduced and talked about, I felt a sort of connection because I felt for once that if he was real he'd love me despite all the 'issues' that I had!
So for my own enjoyment, I picked up writing again just so I could have something nice to read back on the not so nice nights. A few years later I had a new home, a few new friends who're genuine to me, and a somewhat better family situation, and my love for writing remained just as my love for Raiden did as well. I had a few crushes both real and fictional but they weren't much or that good for me. Life was definitely more enjoyable as I found another character I felt that connection to, Nero. (Sound familiar?)
Well another year passed and with the help of my friends I grew to enjoy talkin about my interests again rather than defending them! I wanna say over the summer of my sophomore year that I finally made a Tumblr, mainly just to follow my girlfriend who does amazing art and my other friend. I ended up using my main @child-of-the-nighttime-stars as a place to post my poetry and I believe someone in the community reached out to talk or I reached out to them and that's how I discovered the community!
I lurked around for awhile before I finally got the courage to make this lovely little corner of the interwebs for me! Sure, there has been some ups and downs but all in all it's been a pretty positive experience for me and I hope I've helped add to that too!
I've made a lot of friends and they're are a lot of people who I look up to but have been too shy to reach out to more because I wanna give you my best and I'm still a bit unwell so from the bottom of my heart: Thank you for the kindness and simply being here!
@atmospheric-light @nyandereneko @roboticstarships @disneymarina @robotarmjokes @rain-selfships @24hourshipping @realities-escape @fo-love and just so many more!

So, now that I’ve completed MGS4 and am working my way through some of the other titles I haven’t played, here’s my general takeaways of the game’s I’ve finished.
Best Story: Metal Gear Solid 1. I just find that this game has everything, like a compilation of all the best action movie scenes but at the same time also has a message it desperately wants to get across to it’s audience. A message that the following games all chide the player in different ways for ignoring. It’s simple enough by Metal Gear standards, but it manages to capture one’s imagination possibly because we need to use our imaginations to smooth out the graphics on the PS1 release.
Best Gameplay: Ground Zeroes. Okay, I know this is going to be controversial here. Ground Zeroes is the prologue to MGSV The Phantom Pain, the intro section of the game that was cut off, sold separately, and later reattached in the definitive edition. So saying it has the best gameplay would mean saying that MGSV has the best and therefore should have been disqualified fo this award because I haven’t beaten that yet. And while there is merit to that argument, I’m going to ignore it for two very simple reasons.
1) It’s not a tutorial level for The Phantom Pain. It kinda expects the player, considering they are playing as Big Boss, to already be familiar with it since they are a professional. But the tutorial stuff, like the Tanker Chapter in MGS2, is pretty limited and the real tutorial doesn’t happen until you play as someone else.
 2) A lot of this is map design. The map for Ground Zeroes is fantastic, allowing the player to stealth their way around a massive military institution in order to complete their objectives. Compare this to the open world of MGSV, with it’s much smaller bases to capture or sneak your way around. It’s a much more realized environment, helped by the fact your options are nowhere near as numbered as they are in The Phantom Pain. It’s very much a case why the open world doesn’t work for Metal Gear, it needs things to be more tightly designed
Favorite Character: Raiden. Big Boss and Solid Snake are great characters, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve always connected with Raiden. MGS2 really pushed his character, the fact his conversations with Rose dove into him having a life of his own rather than being a cipher. It foreshadowed later reveals, and ultimately was about him not being the player. Pretty cool stuff and that was before he became a cyborg ninja having his ideals and actions called into question.
And that’s kinda the thing for me. Solid Snake is an ideal, an ideal the games treat with reverence even when his body is falling apart. Big Boss is more about how we shouldn’t be treating him as an ideal no matter how cool he can be, because it all leads to him being a fallen hero in direct contrast to Snake. But Raiden was always meant to be Raiden, and that always made him more of a character to me..

the metal gear solid legacy.
what i’m going to talk about is a video game franchise -- the video game i loved the most, and made a big impact in my life. this franchise made me learn about the effects of war, teamwork, and a lot more things (i couldn’t put it in words, there’s a lot that i learned about this franchise!).
the story line of this franchise will get you hooked up. i won’t tell the whole story line of this franchise because honestly, explaining the story line would take me an hour or so to explain (or even a day!) for you to understand the whole story line, so it’s best if you play the franchise itself.
first, i’ll give you a list of what made hooked in this franchise, and the best parts in this franchise.
SOUNDTRACKS!!! -  i swear to the boss, the soundtracks of each games in this franchise makes me so emotional. these soundtracks got stuck in my head while playing these games (i even want to sing every soundtrack on stage).
easter eggs - the easter eggs in this franchise were hilarious, especially the johnny part and ~ posters ~, if you know what i mean.
the one where they let you view their perspective by clicking “R1″ (i used PlayStation my whole life so i don’t know much about Xbox).
truth to be told, the snake family, big boss, liquid snake, and solid snake (yeah let’s add solidus snake), are actually attractive. admittingly, when big boss has an eye patch, he looks sexier than he was before. okay, this may be getting out hand, but i can’t help but have a big crush on them. i even have a crush on EVA, The Boss, Quiet, and Meryl! i’m pretty damn sure every gamer has a gay crush on every character in a video game they play.
yeah, that’s all the lists i could come up to. i know there’s a lot, but i can’t put them into words, they’re too good.
anyway, let’s head on to the main point. what do i think of all the games in this franchise? what are the best parts in every game in this franchise?
i could give you a list my fave games, and writing this excites me.
Metal Gear
tbh, i don’t really know much about this game. i only played the first part in this game because it was kinda hard for me. i played this on my PS3, i guess i just wasn’t familiar with the controls in this game. this was originally played in a MSX2, and i’ve never gotten my hands on one before, so yeah.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
all i know about this game is Solid Snake in Zanzibar Land. just like Metal Gear, i only played the first part. i also played this on my PS3 since the game we bought, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, also have it inside but they can only be accessible in one of the games in the collection, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Metal Gear Solid
I never got the chance to play this game since this game was released in 1998 and it was originally played in PS1. i watched the gameplay in youtube instead, thank god for youtube. this game was remastered as Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, where the graphics improved and the game could be playable in PS2. when the graphics improved in PS2, i was excited to see liquid’s face since i was curious on how he looked in an improved way, and boy, guess who just had a crush on him? me. (his accent are plus points.) the original game can be now playable in PS3, it’s either you buy the game on PlayStation Store or buy the legacy collection in a video game store. solid snake’s character was so flirty in this game, and you could feel the love between solid snake and meryl.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
there comes raiden! actually, this is the first metal gear game that i played. i played this when i was like 5 or 6 or 7, and i gotta admit, it was hard for me at first. but when i was like 11 or 12, i finally found no difficulty in playing the game. it made me understand the story line more about this game. the VR missions in this game are also my favorite. i usually play that part whenever i finish the whole game. there’s also a demo theater (fun fact: you could achieve a trophy in this game while watching Rose and Raiden have a sword fight, which Solidus and Raiden are the original characters there) where you could watch some cutscenes from the game and you could change the characters, if you wish to.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
the one that started it all! there goes the camouflage and foods (and by foods, i mean snake eats animals from the jungle). he is guided through radio by major zero, the boss (who defects to soviet union in the gameplay), para-medic, sigint, and later by EVA throughout the game. the easter eggs in this game were hilarious as hell. the radio conversations with para-medic were fun to listen to, especially when they about movies. sigint was also fun to talk to, you’d always get into a funny conversation with him. oh and boy, don’t get me started with EVA. who later becomes the lover of snake throughout the series. the boss was such a badass! she deserved better though.
WHAT A THRILL~ SNAKE EATEEEEEEER~
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
this is probably the saddest game i’ve ever played, and also one of the best. all remaining characters who are still alive were all here. playing this game will give you nostalgia if you’ve been playing the MGS Series for a long time. (spoiler: solid snake or should i say, old snake, goes back to shadow moses.)
i won’t leave some more spoilers, it’s better if you play the game itself.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
i didn’t finish this game, honestly. it was still hard for me. i’m stuck on a mission where big boss would defeat the pupa flying around the sky. i always run out of supplies. but the game is great, i gotta say. i don’t know much about this game honestly, but i’ve watched some cutscenes in youtube.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
i also don’t know much about this game, but i’ve watched some cutscenes in youtube. i think this a good game, even though the voice of snake was changed. nothing beats to david hayter’s voice as snake’s voice, honestly. however, kiefer sutherland did a good job, i’m just disappointed how big boss didn’t speak that much through MGSV and there was no codec.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
same with mgsv: ground zeroes. i only know about big boss’ phantom, i also watched some cutscenes in youtube. there were some feels in this game, especially when zero visited big boss in a hospital when big boss was in a coma for nine years. overall, i think the game is great. i’d play this game if we’d buy PS4.
here are my fave soundtracks from all the metal gear franchise.
“The Best Is Yet To Come” - Rika Marunaka (MGS1)
Metal Gear Solid Main Theme (MGS2)
Can’t Say Goodbye To Yesterday - Carla White (MGS2)
Snake Eater - Cynthia Harrell (MGS3)
“METAL GEAR SOLID” Main Theme (MGS3)
Old Metal Gear (MGS3)
Sailor (MGS3)
Salty Catfish (MGS3)
Don’t Be Afraid - Elisa Fiorillo (MGS3)
Pillowtalk (MGS3)
Surfing Guitar (MGS3)
Way To Fall - Starsailor (MGS3)
Debriefing (MGS3)
Calling To The Night - Natasha Farrow (MGS:PO)
Old Snake (MGS4)
Love Theme - Jackie Presti (MGS4)
Metal Gear Saga (MGS4)
Heavens Divide - Donna Burke (MGS:PW)
The Man Who Sold The World - Midge Ure (MGSV)
Sins Of The Father - Donna Burke (MGSV)
Quiet’s Theme - Stefanie Joosten (MGSV)
there would be one day where i won’t communicate with other people because i’m busy playing my fave franchise ever, Metal Gear.
that’s a lot for now. thanks for taking your time to read this. this sure is long.

Note
I'm bored and I've decided to send my favorite MGS blogs this ask (don't feel pressured to answer if you don't want to!) 1) What are your top 3 favourite MGS games and why? (If you haven't played three just do the amount you have played) 2) 4 most loved characters and 4 most hated characters - why do you love/hate them? 3) Write the simplest and shortes summary of the series or your fav game (extra points for humour!) 4) pick you favourite game/s and try to convince me why I should play it
Mwhooo boi ok this is really long so I’m going to put it under the cut so I don’t clog up anyone’s dash
1) uhh this one is tricky because some games are really good gameplay wise but not story-wise, and then the rest have oki-sh gameplay but really good stories… also I’ve only played 3 in total. In order for me, it’s:
MGS2 (my favourite story in the series + the codec dialogue is super good.), TPP (the story was good in parts, the gameplay was SUPER fun), and then Revengance (it was also fun to play but the story was not so great…)
And as soon as I play mgs3 and mgs1 (when I can get the pc port working) they’ll probably change up the list.
2) ooooh this is hard again. Because I love everyone?
Favorites (in no order):
Meryl (she is so strong and cool. Best part of mgs4)
Kaz (he’s one of the most interesting and dynamic characters in the series and TPP didn’t do him justice)
Solid Snake (He’s the original boi. It’s really hard to explain why I like him briefly because he changes so much game to game, but I love him and he’s the best and a flawed but also a genuinely good person)
Quiet (It took me a while to warm up to her but after her final quest…I would die for her she’s too good for us)
Raiden (He was written to be a relatable character, so myeah. NOT mgr Raiden. That is not my boy that is an edgelord IMPOSTER)
(I did 5 because I had to… there so many more I feel like I’m going to keep going back to edit this list)
Least favoritessss:
Huey (he’s Huey)
The Beauty and Beast squad (they could have been cool. But all they ended up being was fanservice and their shoe-horned in ‘tragic backstories’ were kind of insulting. They were just bad characters)
uhhhhh colonel campbell (I don’t actually hate that many characters?? I’m beginning to reach here. Colonel campbell was a shitty dad and stuff)
Uh. Huey again because I really hate him
phew that was hard…
3)  Summary of my favourite game uh…
If you’re good at video games you’ll get a girlfriend?
4) Ok by favourite games I guess you mean games that aren’t metal gear
My go-to favourite game is usually Bayonetta (PlayStation version because I found it was more fun with a controller) it’s a Platinum Games game so gameplay wise it’s obviously going to be a lot of fun gameplay wise. Thematically the game is super badass and fun, and what it lacks in a strong story it makes up for in humour and generally how flashy and exciting it is.
And my all time favourite game series is Far Cry (I’ve only played 3 and 4 tho) if you liked the playstyle of The Phantom Pain, then the Far Cry games are pretty much just more of that. Lots of fun open world stuff, lots of mechanics to let you approach every mission differently, a focus on stealth stuff but not always. Far Cry 3 was one of the first games I ever played when is was 14ish, and I was super into it (even though, looking back the story had some not so hot elements) Overall it’s well written and the soundtrack is awesome. Far Cry 4′s story is objectively even better. Actually, I have inspired myself to replay the games lmao (also I am very excited for Far Cry 5 yall have no idea)
OK that was really hard. I hope you find this interesting :3

Character #12: Solid Snake
“I’m no hero. Never was. Never will be.”
Tumblr media
First Appearance: Metal Gear (July 13, 1987) Bio: A highly skilled super-soldier specializing in espionage, Snake keeps his emotions under wraps during missions due to his long life on the battlefield. He has difficulty opening up to most people, but towards those that he trusts, he is incredibly loyal and willing to put his life on the line for them. --- Listen, I love Big Boss as much as the next guy and he’s given us some of the most awesome, powerful, and introspective moments in the Metal Gear series. But the reason why I like Solid Snake more is for how he grows as a person, and how he comes to depend on the people around him. He’s definitely not like this around the beginning of Metal Gear Solid; he’ll do the task given to him but nothing more, keeping small talk to a minimum save for a few certain people. His long life on the battlefield and his less than pleasant past has made him wary of developing relationships with people, and most of the time in conversation he comes off as cynical and jaded, even to people like Mei Ling (though he’ll still flirt with women on occasion). He’s long since given up on the idea of living a happy life because he’s one of the best guys in the business and everybody’s gonna need him to carry out an operation at some point. It doesn’t help that he’s also a loner by nature and he prefers not to talk about himself or get involved with other people. While he passes himself off as a charismatic badass who can pull out good one-liners, it’s hard not to feel sad for the lonely soul underneath. Spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 1 Then, during the course of MGS1, he meets Meryl, who really helps to bring out Snake’s humanity. In any other situation, he’d snipe her in a second if it was for the mission, but as he starts to spend time with her a little more... he feels a connection between them. Even when Snake tries his damndest to hide his emotions (especially after the Mantis fight), you can really see how he begins to have a real bond with Meryl, and by the time Meryl gets shot, you really see how he cares for her. Telling Campbell “I’m saving her for my sake, not because you ordered me to” is a really nice touch to his character, and it shows how he starts to widen his circle of trust. I just absolutely love his entire arc where he goes from cold and uncaring to legitimately giving a damn about his comrades, even the ones that try to hide stuff from him like Campbell and Naomi. Spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 2 Snake doesn’t get quite as much development in MGS2, but that’s just because he spends most of the game being straight up awesome. The Tanker mission is excellent and makes great use of his character all the way up to his confrontation with Revolver “I LIVE ON THROUGH THIS ARM” Ocelot before he covers his skin by FAKING HIS OWN DEATH. Then when you’re playing as Raiden, you’re graced with Sna- I mean, Iroquois Pliskin showing you up at every opportunity and showing how much of a badass he is. Then at the end he gives this cheesy but inspiring speech about how “you’re you, and you’ve got your own life to live.” He’s untouchable throughout most of the game and it’s great seeing him do anything at any point in time. Spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4 But MGS4 is where I learned to really love Snake, and his whole arc through the course of the game is a beautiful send-off to his character. He’s gotten so old and frail, about to die and not feeling he had a very good life at all, but... he absolutely won’t quit. He’s so determined to accomplish his mission and kill Liquid Ocelot, pushing himself onwards, getting his FUCKIN’ FACE BURNED and struggling through that entire microwave hallway, just to ensure that he gets the fuckin’ job done for the sake of everyone depending on him. And that whole moment he has with Big Boss after he foils his attempted suicide and reminds him of all his accomplishments is just beautiful, in how Snake finally learns to accept himself for who he is and finally gets to live the life he’s always wanted. After years of doing the impossible, saving the world, and living a hard life in general, Snake more than earns his well deserved rest. Teaser for Character #11: Claims to not like cabbage

Response to the Metal Gear Solid 2 & 4 Documentaries
I grew up playing Metal Gear Solid games, so these documentaries were incredibly interesting to me. Unfortunately, I was never able to play Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, because I didn’t own a PS3, but after watching this documentary, I now especially want to play it. It’s utterly mind-blowing to me that Kojima came up with the infiltration theme/mechanic that was critical to the Metal Gear Solid franchise by playing hide and seek. It’s almost unbelievable that such important ideas can come from the simplest aspects of life. Also, that Kojima Productions grew at the exponential rate that it did is incredible to me, considering it went from a fifteen person team at the beginning of MGS2’s production to over 200 employees while producing MGS4. I think the main reason for Kojima Productions’ immense growth is that Kojima is a great storyteller. Kojima drew influences from every part of his life to make these games. For example, Kojima used his love of old samurai movies as an influence across the Metal Gear Solid series, and, in a particular instance, that first meeting of Snake and Olga. Also, I like how Kojima uses real-life experience in scriptwriting and character design. Almost everyone has seen a person from a bit of a distance and mistaken a stranger for someone they know, and I really like how he threw that in the first cut scene with Olga in MGS2 in an effort to make Snake’s character feel just that much more human. That intentional use of confusion as a tactic to keep players on their toes during cut scenes is utterly brilliant. Additionally, I like how he used a piece of his own relationship with his wife and put it in the game to make Raiden’s character more believable, linking the date of events of MGS2 with Raiden and Rose’s anniversary, as well as a date with his wife that he forgot about. Kojima has an ability to make his characters seem more human than most, and now I really want to implement that in my games as I make them. The creative process seems incredibly important for Hideo Kojima, and you can see his dedication to his work through his undertakings while making the games. When the documentary team interviewed MGS4’s opening movie director Alexei Tylevich about his thoughts on Kojima, he said that Kojima was a perfectionist; I had always imagined that, but I didn’t know it was to the point that Kojima had to take preventative measures to protect his hands from calluses while endlessly testing MGS4 in the final stages of the game’s development. Metal Gear Solid’s realism is what drew me to it when I started playing the games as a teenager. However, I didn’t realize just how much effort Kojima and his team put into the realism with location scouting and more, and that it reached as far as the gestures the enemy soldiers made. I like how Kojima used Legos while creating to map out the level designs as well as the scope of the game. I’ve found that physical ideation and planning has always been helpful for me during my creative process, and I really need to be better about using that as a toolset while creating. I admire how Kojima had the ability to drop an idea that he really liked before releasing the final version of the game because it detracted from the gameplay. That’s actually something I really struggle with when I create. I feel like if I come up with an idea that I find usable, even if it doesn’t fit well later, I still have a lot of trouble getting rid of it. That being said, I am really glad that I didn’t have to fight the Chinaman when I was playing through MGS2. That character was incredibly interesting from a design perspective and I would have liked to see him in the game, but that fight where he would have replaced Vamp was already incredibly hard. The fact that the Chinaman would have turned into a dragon and sent sharks after you would have made the fight nearly impossible to beat. Kojima’s idea to have the player play as Raiden to give Snake more depth was an incredible choice. He’s correct in that it’s hard to give a character depth if the player is playing as them, and that is definitely something important to keep in mind while creating games, in order to best find ways to circumvent that issue. Lastly, I think the idea notebooks were brilliant, and if I ever work on a game design team, I will definitely suggest the concept. Kojima understands the importance of collaboration to creativity and ideation, and as a result was incredibly open to the ideas of his staff. Above all, the most important takeaway from both documentaries for me was Hideo Kojima told the documentary team for MGS4 that even though he is perfectionistic, “… no matter how perfect you try to make a game, it’s ultimately each player who puts the finishing touches on it.” That quote stuck out to me because, well, he’s completely right: no matter how perfect you make any creative output, it’s ultimately the viewer/player that decides what it means, and ‘puts the finishing touches’ on your creation as a result. From now on, I’m going to do my best to keep that lesson in mind while I’m making any sort of creative output.

Prompt: #F13 - Write an appreciation post for your favorite character. (20 points)
Solid Snake is a wonderful example to me and one i 'try' to set for myself.
Many people first met him in mgs1. By then, he’s already admirable. Two missions under his belt; two run-ins with Metal Gear. He feels a sense of responsibility. For Metal Gear, and for future generations. Although Campbell blackmails him into doing the mission. Snake wouldn’t just sit back and watch the world burn and fall apart. This is made very evident in Guns of the Patriots.
When Sons of Liberty rolls around. He isn't back in Twin peaks retired in a cabin. Instead, Philanthropy is born. Both him and Otacon are now working on ridding the world of Metal Gears. Otacon or Snake never really stopped fighting against Metal Gears. They always fought for what he believed in.
The tanker incident happens. Causing Snake to fake his death, and go under the radar. Two years later another treat surfaces and Snake comes out of hiding; ending up helping ‘rookie’ Raiden out.
I do love Solid Snake as a whole and in all of the former Metal Gear games. Guns of the Patriots is a place that I would like to explore more. I’m not sure if it's because I've replayed this the most times and even read the novel. In my opinion, this game showcases the drive that Snake has the best.
Snake speaks about the future a lot. He feels he has a responsibility to pave a way for the future, for Sunny, Meryl, Hal, and everyone who will continue to live once he's gone.
2014 Liquid Ocelot starts his insurrection, his plans. Campbell catches wind of it. He goes to Snake, a trustworthy friend of his. Campbell knows that he can count on Snake. When he does come back to Otacon and Snake for the mission. They both dive into it. The whole game Snake is stubborn. Although it's with good reason, for he feels he must finish his mission. He’s determined to. In his words to Raiden, ‘it's his (snake’s) fight.’ Someone pointed out that Snake doesn't speak much in MGS4. Whereas in MGS2 he makes a whole speech at the end of the game about ‘when we leave things behind for future generations, It doesn’t always have to be DNA.’
That's what I feel he does in MGS4. He takes his own advice. He doesn't give some sort of speech, doesn’t give words of wisdom to Raiden, Sunny, Meryl or even Otacon. Instead, he leaves behind an example.
The whole game he’s in a constant battle against his own aging body. The odds are against him; as it is with any good protagonist or hero. He's done enough for his country and the world already. Yet (In act 5 of MGS4) Otacon begs him not to go to Outer Haven. Once again Snake refuses and still does his mission and he makes it. He uploads the virus to GW and finishes his mission.
That’s how he leaves behind an example for the people in his life (and for the gamers.) Snake does things for others. He completes his mission so future generations don’t have to fight a war as Snake did. He chooses to do something and he makes sure he finishes it. He’s a fine example of bravery, endurance; and despite his words of “I’m no hero, never was, never will be.” He indeed is a hero to me.
