IMAGES: USAF sends B-52 bombers to Indian Ocean base
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/26/2024 - 16:00 in Military, War Zones
U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortresses bombers were deployed on March 22 at the Diego Garcia Naval Support Center in the Indian Ocean.
Tumblr media
The Bomber Task Force deployment offers the U.S. Air Force Global Attack Command a presence in the Indo-Pacific, with relatively easy access to the Middle East as well.
Tumblr media
The B-52s fled to Diego Garcia from Barksdale Air Base, Louisiana, after a 30-hour direct flight. This is the first time that USAF announces a Bomber Task Force for Diego Garcia - a small island that is part of the British Indian Ocean Territory that serves as a fundamental base for the U.S. and UK military, which has hosted American troops since the 1970s. The B-1 landed there in 2021, and the last time a B-52 landed there was in 2020.
Tumblr media
"This deployment aims to improve the readiness and training needed to respond to any potential crisis or challenge around the world, demonstrating the credibility of our forces to face a global security environment that is more diverse and uncertain than at any other time in recent history," the Pacific Air Forces Command (PACAF) said in a statement.
Tumblr media
Although the island is in the area of responsibility of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the U.S. Air Force used the island in the past as a base to send bombers to the U.S. Central Command's area of operations.
Tumblr media
This latest deployment of PACAF bombers follows in the footsteps of the B-52 of Minot Air Base, North Dakota, deployed in Guam at the end of January and operating there until March 6.

Boeing Awarded Contract for Six MH-47G Block II Chinook Helicopters
The U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC) has awarded Boeing a contract to produce six remanufactured MH-47G Block II aircraft as a part of the Army’s modernization efforts. With the deal valued at $271M, Boeing has 42 MH-47G aircraft under contract with USASOAC. As special operations requirements have become increasingly complex, the heavy-lift helicopter has adapted to meet those changing needs. The MH-47G Block II program not only supports the warfighters needs today but enables the Chinook to be battle-relevant well into the future. The Chinook is a heavy-lift helicopter that is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. Its name, Chinook, is from the Native American Chinook people of Oregon and Washington state.

RAF activates second F-35 squadron in Marham
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/12/2023 - 22:23 in Military
A second frontline squadron was formed to pilot the RAF's F-35 Lightning stealth fighters in Marham. The first stealth jet landed at RAF Marham in Norfolk in 2018, arriving from the USA, where they are manufactured.
Squadron 617, famous as Dambusters, was the first to be equipped with the F-35 aircraft.
Now, a second squadron, the 809 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), which is known as "Immortals" and has a phoenix on its crest, has been reformed to also fly the jet.
The squadron was originally formed in 1941 and operated most recently in 1982, flying during the Falklands War, before the squadron was deactivated in December of that year.
Tumblr media
As part of the ceremony, former 809 NAS commander Tim Gedge presented the new commander Nick Smith with the coat of arms of the squadron.
Air Marshal Harvey Smyth, RAF Air and Space Commander, later said that the plan is to be able to “ promptly deploy two Lightnings frontline squadrons at sea, up to 24 aircraft” by the end of 2025. “It's about adding more capacity to our combat air force,” he said.
He continued: "The main role of the Royal Air Force is to obtain air control at any time of conflict.
"We are seeing this clearly happening in Ukraine, at this moment, where neither side has been able to obtain air control.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"As they didn't, they ended up falling into a trench war in the style of World War I, a war of friction, and this is mainly because neither side controls the airspace above.
"This really highlights the incredible importance of air control and a vital part of it is the F-35, the fifth generation capabilities."
The squadron will go through a “very intensive preparation period” for much of next year and will continue to grow in size with the arrival of new jets and more personnel.
The Air Marshal said they will be ready to be deployed on the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales in 2025.
