The iconic logo of the lady holding the torch that you currently see at the beginning of every Columbia Pictures movie was born in the apartment of Pulitzer Prize-winning New Orleans photographer Kathy Anderson in 1991.
The final version is a painting, but few people know that it was based on a photo of the photographer’s colleague, captured during a portrait shoot in a small space using very simple props.
“During the shoot, Jenny asked if she could sit down for a minute,” says the photographer. “I shot one frame of her seated, which may be my favorite image from the shoot. But after chatting for a minute, she confided that she was pregnant. After congratulating her, we resumed shooting, but I was worried about her standing on the box.”

The former Minneapolis Police officer who held down George Floyd's legs during his fatal restraint pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter Wednesday as part of a plea deal, attorneys said.
Thomas Lane, 39, was one of three former officers to face charges of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter and aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder related to Floyd's death in May 2020.
In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss the murder charge, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison's office said. State and defense attorneys jointly recommended to the court a sentence of 36 months, according to his office.
"I am pleased Thomas Lane has accepted responsibility for his role in Floyd's death," Ellison said. "His acknowledgment he did something wrong is an important step toward healing the wounds of the Floyd family, our community, and the nation. While accountability is not justice, this is a significant moment in this case and a necessary resolution on our continued journey to justice."
Defense attorney Earl Gray said Lane agreed to plead guilty because he faced a mandatory 12-year sentence if he were to be convicted of the murder charge.
"My client did not want to risk losing the murder case so he decided to plead guilty to manslaughter with a 3-year sentence, to be released in 2 years, and the murder case dismissed," Gray said. "The sentence will be concurrent with his federal sentence and he will serve his time in a federal institution. He has a newborn baby and did not want to risk not being part of the child's life."
Lane is scheduled to be sentenced on September 21 on the state charge, according to the court.
He was among three former officers already convicted in a federal court in February of violating Floyd's civil rights. A sentencing date has not been set in that case.
In a statement, Floyd family attorneys Ben Crump, Antonio Romanucci and Jeff Storms praised the guilty plea but said there was still more to be done.
"Today's guilty plea by former officer Thomas Lane brings the Floyd family another step towards closure for the horrific and historic murder of George Floyd," they said. "While today is a step in the right direction, we only need to look to the recent and tragic killing of Amir Locke to understand that the City of Minneapolis has a long journey ahead to regain the trust of its citizenry."
In early February, a Minneapolis Police officer fatally shot Locke, a 22-year-old Black man, within a few seconds of entering his apartment after Locke emerged from a couch with a handgun and raised it toward an officer, prosecutors said. The officer and others on the Minneapolis SWAT team were there serving a warrant in a homicide investigation.
Ellison and Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman last month declined to file charges against any officers involved in the shooting.
What Lane did during the Floyd's arrest
Former officers Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng faced state and federal charges for their actions – or lack thereof – as their colleague Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into the neck and back of Floyd, who was handcuffed and lying on his stomach, for over nine minutes.
During the arrest, Lane held down Floyd's legs, Kueng held down Floyd's torso, and Thao stood nearby and kept a crowd of upset bystanders back. Harrowing video taken by a bystander showed Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, desperately pleading for them to let him breathe and calling for his mother before he lost consciousness and died.
Outrage over the incident led to an international protest movement against the ways that police treat Black citizens. All four officers were fired and charged after Floyd's death.
Lane, Thou and Kueng had pleaded not guilty to the state charges and rejected a plea deal with prosecutors last month, the attorney general's office said. Thao and Kueng are still expected to face state trial next month.
Chauvin was convicted in state court last year of murder in Floyd's death and was sentenced to more than 22 years in prison. As part of a plea agreement, Chauvin pleaded guilty in December to federal civil rights charges related to Floyd's death and the restraint of a teenager in a separate incident.
In the federal trial, Lane testified that he was on his fourth day on the job, while Chauvin had worked for the department for over 18 years. Lane twice asked Chauvin to reposition Floyd during the restraint but was denied both times, according to his testimony and body camera footage.
The first time, Lane asked Chauvin whether they should put Floyd's legs up, as they are taught in the academy. "No, we're good," Chauvin said, according to Lane's testimony.
Lane then said he asked Chauvin whether they should roll Floyd on his side. "No, we're good like this," Chauvin responded, according to Lane's testimony.
At Chauvin's state trial, a series of medical experts testified that Floyd died of "positional asphyxia," or the inability to sufficiently breathe due to his prone position and the pressure on his back.
An ambulance eventually arrived and first responders lifted Floyd, who was limp at that point, into the vehicle. Lane joined them in the ambulance and did CPR on Floyd.

Spiritual Practices During a Pandemic
Tumblr media
The Martin Institute's web initiative, Conversatio Divina, offers some timely envisioning of spiritual practices during periods of 'lockdown' in the midst of a global pandemic.
To practice or exercise, spiritually, is to bear witness to the fact that one's environment, circumstances, policies, and other material conditions do not have the 'final word' on ultimate health and formation; it is to step into the reality of moral and spiritual life.
Edited by Michael Di Fuccia, 12 younger Christian writers (from a range of vocations) "share their insights about how to live well in the midst of this pandemic" and model "an exercise of contemplation-in-action, a reflection on one of the many areas of challenge that we face in this crisis and concrete advice for how to structure our habits in response."
The essays include:
The Practice of Embodiment (Rachel M. Coleman).
The Practice of Lament (Matthew Wilcoxen).
The Practice of Surprise (Fr. Mac Stewart).
The Practice of Stability (Michael Di Fuccia).
The Practice of Discernment (Brandon Rickabaugh).
The Practice of Creating (Dea Jenkins).
The Practice of Waiting (Johannes Borjesson).
The Practice of Community (Angela Reed).
The Practice of the Mundane (Hanna J. Lucas).
The Practice of Service (Brandon Paradise).
The Practice of Presence (Mariah Velasquez).
The Practice of Beholding (Brittany McComb).
What do these practices evoke for you? In what sense do they invite you into a freedom to grow in the midst of external constraint? Indeed, how do they embody a deeper sense of interior freedom than that which is 'on loan' from conditions and constrains that shape our public life with others? Are there other practices that you find life-giving? Let us know of your experiences!
Additional practices - even as supplements to the above - might include:
Practicing reading scripture out loud. Scripture is designed not only for a training of the eyes, but also the ears. Read it out loud by yourself - or even better - with others of your household or with others via zoom. What do you notice in your readings? Try reading or listening to books of the Bible that speak to those in 'disestablished' and 'exilic' conditions (e.g., Daniel, Jeremiah, 1 Peter). What is the Spirit saying to you as spoke long ago to a people being formed for purposes beyond 'lockdown'?
Practicing crucial conversations. Many neighbors and communities are (re)asking 'big questions' about what matters most in life; indeed, what is a life worth living? There are immediately existential - if not 'survivalist' - questions in the mental environment of many (e.g., will my life be forever changed if I get covid-19? will I lose my job? who will take care of my family if I get severely sick?). There are other existential questions surfacing for many (e.g., is 'living for a paycheck' the best kind of life to live? is there more to life than 'getting by' in maintaining my life? what is it for?). Think of the 'internal dialogue' of a book like Ecclesiastes. What does it evoke for the sort of crucial conversation to be had with our own belief formation? Think of the deep disagreements you have with people. Instead of running from those disagreements, how you might you step more intentionally into them? Social scientist Joseph Grenny et al defines a 'crucial conversation' as a discussion between people in which they hold "(1) opposing opinions about (2) high-stakes issues and where (3) emotions run strong." Grow in how to engage without 'losing it'.
Practicing learning and study. Think about your thinking. Assess your own belief formation; why do you believe what you believe about x, y, or z matter? There is grace to study and learn in the midst of a pandemic and its lockdowns. An opportunity to review and rethink presuppositions. Veritas Life Center provides a range of free resources for you to think and believe more deeply. Call or zoom with others on a regularly basis (even just 15-30 minutes a week) to share what you are learning, what you are wrestling with, what you are gaining from reading, watching, listening to different sources in this 'pandemic time'.
Practicing radical generosity. In lockdown and with social distancing measures, it can feel like all of your world is becoming smaller, enclosed, restrictive. Break that mentality by shifting from a posture of self-protection/preservation to becoming radically generous and sacrificial in your words, time, money and resources, presence and attention toward others and their interest. Take on the mentality of Jesus as evidenced in places like Philippians 2.

Election 2020 Presidential Candidates Assessment
Howie Hawkins/Angela Nicole Walker, Green :
Federal Investigations of Local Police Misconduct
Community Control of the Police
The Green party candidates wants to reform the police in a way that would include federal investigations into local police misconduct as a way to make sure that corruption or misuse of power is investigated in local police forces. They also want the people to have a say in how the police operate in their communities. I wholeheartedly agree with their ideas and think that they are both good points for what should be done for a start. I think there is more that would need to be done, but these are good ideas.
There are no conflicts between this and blog 3 but it does say more than the party website itself did, which I appreciate.
Donald J. Trump/Michael R. Pence, Republican :
• The Department of Justice announced more than $98 million in grant funding through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services COPS Hiring Program to allow 802 additional full-time law enforcement officers.
• The Trump Administration expanded Project Safe Neighborhoods to encourage U.S. Attorney’s to work with communities to develop customized crime reduction strategies.
The Republican party candidates do not say much about reforming the police, but by looking at their “accomplishments” it is clear that they are against defunding the police and, in fact, have provided much more funding to the police to allow for many more jobs. I do not agree with this solution because I see this as a try for quantity over quality, when I believe that it is our quality of police enforcement that is the direct and indirect cause of many problems nowadays. This also directly juxtaposes the party website, which is pro defunding of police and defunding of federal police.
Gloria La Riva/Sunil Freeman, Peace and Freedom
Dear Gloria La Riva, The issue I am concerned about is police funding and reform.  I am concerned about this issue because I believe that police are necessary for public safety but also require reform.  I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class.  Please clarify your stance on this issue.  Thank you so much for your time and good luck.
Sincerely, Fox Fleischmann [email protected]
Roque De La Fuente "Rocky" Guerra/Kanye Omari West, American Independent
Dear Roque De La Fuente, The issue I am concerned about is police funding and reform.
Jo Jorgensen/Jeremy "Spike" Cohen, Libertarian :
• As your President, I will defund federal involvement in policing. I will defund the DEA and keep federal agencies out of local police matters unless called upon by state authorities.
Jo Jorgenson aligns completely with her party’s statement as she calls for defunding of federal police. She also promotes the complete legalization of objects to be owned by whomever may want to own such objects including drugs, firearms, and other destructive devices. I agree with her stance on complete legalization, as I believe that if given the right tools, the people of America can defend themselves, and this would be the only situation in which de funding of police would be preferred. I also believe that crimes must have a victim, and there is no point to having a law on drugs when someone could just as easily go to a store and drink a bottle of whiskey and die from alcohol poisoning.
Joseph R. Biden/Kamala D. Harris, Democratic :
Expand federal funding for mental health and substance use disorder services and research.
The Democratic candidates are pushing for a reform in the criminal justice system, and would like to support the mental health of the officers in the criminal justice system. I agree with this stance and think that their objectives align with my own in the fact that I believe that the criminal justice system needs to be reformed to fit the instabilities that lie within the justice system. These points align with those on the democratic website.

Election 2020 Presidential Candidates Assessment
Candidates Position:
Howie Hawkins and Angela Nicole Walker for the Green Party: want to monitor and prosecute white racist terrorists, have federal investigations of local police misconduct, have a community control of the police, end mass incarcerations, treat drug abuse as a health problem instead of a criminal problem, legalize marijuana, decriminalize sex work, fight corporate crime and end warrantless mass surveillance.
Agree or Disagree: I agree with most of the ideas they have, the only one I have a slight issue with is the have community control of the police, because this is very vague and communities could use it to manipulate events to their favor.
Compared to Party Platform: Very similar to the party platform, two things on the party platform that are not on Hawkins’ page is focus on prosecution on corporate, white collar, and environmental crimes and the opposeition of private prisons.
Donald J. Trump and Michael R. Pence for the Republican Party: want to protect and support students whose free speech rights have been attacked on university campuses, creak down on international criminal organizations like drug cartels and gangs, address and prevent school violence, and removing illegal guns from the streets.
Agree or Disagree: I agree with these claims.
Compared to Party Platform: Trump’s page conflicts with the party platform, on the platform page it claims to want to keep the death penalty, protect inmates from harm by other inmates and imprisoning anyone who assaults a police officer but includes nothing about protecting students or removing guns from the streets.
Gloria La Riva and Sunil Freeman for the Peace and Freedom Party:
Not on the page and had to contact.
Dear Gloria La Riva, The issue I am concerned about is Criminal Law Reform and Juvenile Justice .  I am concerned about this issue because I did not see it on your page and would like to know your view on it.  I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class.  Please clarify your stance on this issue.  Thank you so much for your time and good luck.
Sincerely, Charlotte Wiseman
Roque De La Fuente Guerra (Rocky) and Kanya Omari West for the American Independent Party:
Not on the page and had to contact.
Dear Roque De La Fuente Guerra,The issue I am concerned about is Criminal Law Reform and Juvenile Justice .  I am concerned about this issue because I did not see it on your page and would like to know your view on it.  I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class.  Please clarify your stance on this issue.  Thank you so much for your time and good luck.
Sincerely,Charlotte Wiseman
Jo Jorgensen and Jeremy Cohen (Spike) for the Libertarian Party: wants to defund federal involvement in policing, defund the DEA , end the supply of surplus military equipment to police, end no-knock raids, make it easier for people dealing with drug addiction to get helps, and drug offenders who are currently in prison and have not harmed anyone will be set free.
Agree or Disagree: I disagree with the first three ideas, I do not think we should defund the DEA or federal involvment. I however do agree with endding no-knock raids and helping people who suffer with addiction.
Compared to Party Platform: Jorgensen’s page also conflicts with the party platform page. The platform states that the party wishes to repeal creating laws for crimes without victims, avoid intimidating defendants into accepting plea bargains and to keep innocent until proven guilty, but the candidates page is all about defunding federal involvment in police and freeing drug users.
Joseph R. Biden and Kamala D. Harris for the Democrat Party: wants to focus on redemption and rehabilitation, offer second chances, expand federal funding for mental health and substance use disorder services and research, invest in public defenders offices, eliminate mandatory minimums, decriminalize the use if cannabis, eliminate the death penalty, end the criminalization of poverty, and ensure humane prison conditions. For Juvenile justice they want to invest $1 billion per year in juvenile justice reform, incentivize states to stop incarcerating kids, end the school to prison pipeline by focusing on prevention, give children a true second chance by protecting juvenile records, and reduce violence against women.
Agree or Disagree: I agree with all of the claims except eliminating the death penalty.
Compared to Party Platform: The candidates page supports the party platform page.
