Ballet’s #MeToo Movement
By Alex Lindsey, Butler University Class of 2021
June 1, 2020
Tumblr media
Peter Martins retired in January of 2018 amid accusations of sexual harassment and verbal and physical abuse(Kourlas). He took over New York City ballet in 1990 following the retirement of Balanchine, the original founder of New York City Ballet. Balanchine was one of the most influential 20th century ballet choreographers, and he is often referred to as the father of American ballet. Both Martins and Balanchine were known for their mistreatment of women, especially those women who danced under their ruling authority at NYCB. Although his forced retirement was a huge step for ballet’s #MeToo Movement, there are still major changes that must be made for the rights of individual dancers. More recently, dancers around the world and at NYCB have felt safe enough to step forward and report injustices after Martin’s departure.
The Paris Opera, like many of the other original European ballet companies, was originally funded by wealthy subscribers who used their money and influence to exploit dancers. These subscribers were so powerful that they were even considered in the building’s structural design.Charles Garnier designed the iconic opera house in the 1860s, where he included a special entrance and a private viewing room for season ticket holders. This lavish private room was a place where patrons could socialize with, and proposition, ballet dancers while the dancers were warming up for the performance (Blakemore). Compared to typical women’s fashion at the time, the costumes of these dancers were skimpy and revealing, which allowed the subscribers to ogle backstage without restrictions. In addition, many of the dancers came from poor backgrounds and a relationship with a rich subscriber was their only chance at stability (Blakemore). In order to survive, these dancers had no choice but to comply with the subscriber’s requests.
Although dancers are no longer sexually exploited by subscribers to that same degree, this long history of men in positions of unchecked power persists in American ballet. Even though the majority of ballet dancers are female, almost all of the artistic and executive directors of major ballet companies in America are men. Since there are so few male ballet dancers, studios are eager to recruit male dancers, teachers give them extra attention, and female peers want to get close to them to have more partnering opportunities (Villarreal). These young boys are automatically given immense power by just showing up, and when they grow older, they expect to keep receiving that same preferential treatment. On the other hand, girls are treated as replaceable, and as a result they are often afraid to speak up when something is not right.Dancers view this power dynamic as normal since they live it from a young age and in a professional ballet company,it becomes even more difficult to start questioning that ingrained inequality.
After Peter Martins stepped down in 2018, one New York City Ballet dancers found the courage to speak out. Alexandra Waterbury, former student at the School of American Ballet, affiliated with NYCB, filed a lawsuit that led to the departures of three male principal dancers: Waterbury’s ex-boyfriend Chase Finlay, Zachary Catazaro, and Amar Ramasar (Kourlas). The three men engaged in inappropriate communications about Waterbury and other female dancers in the company and exchanged nude photos of those dancers. Mr. Finlay took photos of Waterbury without her permission while being intimate, which classifies as sexual misconduct (Yale). Even though she consented to the intimate activities, she did not consent to having her photo taken and shared. In one of his text messages to Mr. Catazaro, Mr. Finlay wrote that 18 is “prime time for women,” and “It might sound creepy but 18 is the age of consent for a reason” (Kourlas). The company determined that the disturbing text messages were personal and sent off-hours and off-site, but they were a strong violation of the norms of conduct that they expect from their dancers (Cooper).
The company fired Finlay, Catazaro, and Ramasar to express their strong disapproval of the actions of these men. One of the donors of New York City Ballet was also recognized for his involvement with the explicit texts. He wrote to Mr. Finlay about his desire to “violate” dancers at another company, and added, “I bet we could tie some of them up and abuse them like farm animals” Mr. Finlay replied, “or like the sluts they are” (Cooper). That specific donor has made contributions of about $12,000 dollars to the company, and to address this injustice NYCB will be making a donation in that amount to a local charity focused on women’s issues (Cooper).
Ballet has been built on the mistreatment of and sexual exploitation of women, but people are starting to make changes to combat gender inequalities. Once Peter Martins, a powerful male figure in the dance world, stepped down due to accusations of sexual harassment, and verbal and physical abuse, dancers felt like they could speak out and be recognized and heard. New York City Ballet is just one ballet company in America that has made decisions to protect female dancers who have come forward with the #MeToo movement. Teresa Reichlen, a New York City Ballet Dancer, made a powerful statement for NYCB when she declared: “We strongly believe that a culture of equal respect for all can exist in our industry,” and “We will not put art before common decency or allow talent to sway our moral compass” (Kourlas). Although there is still a lot that can be improved, the ballet world is slowly moving closer and closer towards the goal of equality.

Today we’re looking at Kent Hovind’s “book” Are You Being Brainwashed?: Propaganda in Science Textbooks. In this first part we find out why Kent dislikes evolution so much, he completely butchers it’s definition and we see the first of many many many strawmans.

“Do not rule out an announcement signing too, United – having opted to not pursue re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo 9 years after he left the membership for Spain – would absolutely be close to the entrance of the queue if Gareth Bale additionally decides to go away Actual Madrid this summer time.”

BBC Radio London’s Andy Rowley: “As traditional Tottenham are taking their time within the switch market. Spurs bought their greatest offers accomplished earlier than the World Cup by securing striker Harry Kane and supervisor Mauricio Pochettino to new contracts.
“There is likely to be some re-shaping of the squad to be accomplished in the event that they resolve to promote Belgium internationals Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld. Fernando Llorente, Moussa Sissoko, Danny Rose and Vincent Janssen might also be departing.
“Relying on departures they require large attacking choices and canopy for Harry Kane.”

BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “The place everyone seems to be speaking about is the goalkeeper, as Liverpool shut in on a £66.8m move for Roma’s Alisson.
“Midfield has been been strengthened with Fabinho and Naby Keita, and now Xherdan Shaqiri too however many see Liverpool’s hanging choices needing a lift, if solely by way of expertise – however anybody coming to the membership will know they’re going to have a job and half to play commonly forward of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.”

BBC Radio London’s Nick Godwin: “New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says the switch market would not actually curiosity him and different folks on the membership will resolve who is available in and goes out, though Jorginho has adopted him from Napoli.
“Nevertheless he could must take care of some potential departures. The futures of Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois are removed from sure.
“He did permit himself to counsel that he want to see a bit extra high quality in midfield however that he may adapt gamers he presently has to do that.”

BBC Radio London’s Phil Parry: “For the primary time in over 20 years Arsenal head into a brand new season with out Arsene Wenger on the helm which makes predictions somewhat troublesome. The final marketing campaign for the Frenchman proved very disappointing and his successor takes over with the membership at its lowest league ebb on the pitch in years.
“Unai Emery’s first goal can be to make the Gunners problem for a top-four end. The gamers who’ve left the squad aren’t any main shock whereas the enterprise already accomplished has began to fill a number of of the cracks which have appeared within the final couple of years. Two skilled defenders will assist and a brand new goalkeeper in Leno could sign an actual problem to Petr Cech within the battle for the gloves.
“Lucas Torreira regarded spectacular as a defensive midfielder for Uruguay within the World Cup and appears to be an astute acquisition. The entrance pair of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have the potential to supply objectives however the Gunners may nonetheless do with some efficiency out large. And on the again one other dominant central defender and left sided participant could be on followers’ buying lists. However maybe after a stale finish to the Wenger period this new path can have a direct impression.”
Burnley
Place final season: seventh
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Scott Arfield (Rangers) free, Tom Anderson (Doncaster) free, Josh Ginnelly (Walsall) free, Chris Lengthy, Dean Marney (each launched)
BBC Radio Lancashire’s Scott Learn: “They give the impression of being a central defender mild, having not strengthened because the sale of Michael Keane 12 months in the past. Kevin Lengthy was an in a position deputy for Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, however damage to both would go away them stretched on the again. Just a little further tempo and mobility, out large and/or up entrance may be a precedence.
“The longer Burnley stay within the Europa League, the harder they’re going to discover the Premier League, not less than that is how the idea goes. Nevertheless, the Championship title, two consecutive years within the high flight after which securing European soccer has instructed me that theories, the place Sean Dyche is anxious, typically exit of the window.”
Everton
Wayne Rooney on Everton, England and the MLS
Place final season: eighth
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Ramiro Funes Mori (Villarreal) undisclosed, Wayne Rooney (DC United) undisclosed, Joel Robles (Actual Betis) free, Jose Baxter (Oldham) free, David Henen (launched), Luke Garbutt (Oxford) mortgage, Henry Onyekuru (Galatasaray) mortgage
BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “I feel Marco Silva and new director of soccer Marcel Manufacturers will concentrate on the shortage of depth within the hanging division. Cenk Tosun has proved to be an excellent signing, however he’ll want assist up high. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did properly final season and we all know Oumar Niasse is usually a handful – however can Everton discover an skilled top-class striker or two?
“Everton have holding midfielders – however could search for extra artistic midfielders. A match once more Gylfi Sigurdsson can be a bonus and it will be fascinating to see if Ademola Lookman is given extra alternatives after getting back from his mortgage spell in Germany. The Blues squad is huge, and should properly require trimming down earlier than any new signings are available in. Final season proved robust for the likes of Davy Klaassen and Nikola Vlasic – however will the brand new supervisor give them a possibility to impress?”
Leicester
Place final season: ninth
Transfers in: James Maddison (Norwich) £20m, Ricardo Pereira (Porto) £17.7m, Jonny Evans (West Brom) £3.5m
Transfers out: Riyad Mahrez (Man Metropolis) £60m, Connor Wooden (Bradford) undisclosed, Ben Hamer (Huddersfield) free, Robert Huth (launched), Elliott Moore (OH Leuven) mortgage
BBC Radio Leicester’s Ian Stringer: “The Foxes will solely actually know what they want once they’re positive the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Harry Maguire, Wilfred NDidi and Jamie Vardy will not be poached. Claude Puel might want one other left again to help teenager Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs.
“The central midfield is packed and there is choices on the wings however yet one more ‘quantity 10’ or artistic participant would not shock me.
“Jack Grealish was talked about earlier than Spurs confirmed curiosity however I would count on the Foxes to unfold their switch tentacles far and large. An abroad star would not be unusual; let’s hope they’re extra profitable than Ahmed Musa and Islam Slimani.”
Newcastle
Place final season: 10th
Transfers in: Martin Dubravka (Sparta Prague) undisclosed, Ki Sung-yueng (Swansea) free, Kenedy (Chelsea) mortgage
Transfers out: Mikel Merino (Actual Sociedad) undisclosed, Massadio Haidara (Lens) free, Stuart Findlay (Kilmarnock) free
BBC Radio Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck: “Rafael Benitez is once more pissed off by Newcastle’s strategy to transfers. He hoped for greater than the £45m that was spent final summer time – however has once more solely been given a modest funds.
“The Spaniard is aware of he must promote gamers – and cut back the wage invoice – as a way to convey in additional new faces; striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – wished by Fulham – is his most saleable asset.
“Benitez wants not less than one striker. West Brom’s Salomon Rondon is the Magpies’ high goal after they missed out on Alassane Plea. The United boss additionally desires to re-sign winger Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace, and will finance that deal by permitting Matt Ritchie to hitch Stoke.
“Three gamers have arrived to date. However on condition that Kenedy and Martin Dubravka have returned after being on mortgage, and Ki Sung-yeung is a like-for-like alternative for Mikel Merino, Newcastle are successfully no stronger than they have been final season.”
Crystal Palace
Place final season: 11th
Transfers in: Vicente Guaita (Getafe) free
Transfers out: Yohan Cabaye (Al Nasr) free, Damien Delaney (Cork) free, Diego Cavalieri, Lee Chung-yong (each launched)
BBC Radio London’s Nick Godwin: “Issues have been very quiet on the switch entrance to date this summer time which has alarmed some Palace supporters.
“Roy Hodgson produced a miracle final season given how lop-sided the squad was and the variety of accidents suffered by means of the marketing campaign.
“A brand new goalkeeper has lastly been introduced in [Guaita] however new recruits are required in midfield and up entrance.
“Nevertheless most efforts are being focused at maintaining maintain of Palace’s present stars – significantly Wilfried Zaha.”
Bournemouth
Place final season: 12th
Transfers in: David Brooks (Sheffield United) undisclosed
Transfers out: Benik Afobe (Wolves) £10m, Lewis Grabban (Nottingham Forest) £6m, Max Gradel (Toulouse) undisclosed, Adam Federici (Stoke) undisclosed, Rhoys Wiggins (retired), Ryan Allsop (Wycombe) free, Ollie Harfield (Dag & Pink) free, Sam Matthews (Bristol Rovers) free, Joe Quigley (Maidstone) free, Baily Cargill, Patrick O’Flaherty (each launched), Mikael Ndjoli (Kilmarnock) mortgage
BBC Radio Solent’s Adam Blackmore: “It has been a quiet summer time to date, however the Cherries are chasing Uruguayan worldwide left-back Diego Laxalt, and Colombian midfielder Jefferson Lerma.
“If Eddie Howe can persuade Lerma and Laxalt to return to the Vitality stadium, then two of their key wants can have been addressed. Centre-back and/or right-back may be positions that give Eddie Howe extra power in depth and formation choices.”
West Ham
Felipe Anderson is West Ham’s membership file signing
Place final season: 13th
Transfers in: Felipe Anderson (Lazio) £36m, Issa Diop (Toulouse) £22m, Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea) £7m, Andriy Yarmolenko (Borussia Dortmund) undisclosed, Fabian Balbuena (Corinthians) undisclosed, Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) free, Ryan Fredericks (Fulham) free
Transfers out: Ben Wells (QPR) undisclosed, Reece Burke (Hull) undisclosed, James Collins, Patrice Evra (each launched)
BBC Radio London’s Phil Parry: “Having appointed a brand new supervisor within the form of Manuel Pellegrini the Hammers have accomplished their switch enterprise early. And after calls from followers for the membership to splash among the Premier League money the board have gone out and invested closely this summer time to strengthen areas recognized by many observers as these needing to be addressed.
“Diop seems as a nice prospect within the coronary heart of defence whereas Ryan Fredericks will match the power and up and down model of Arthur Masuaku on the alternative full-back flank. With the arrival of Anderson and Yarmolenko the Irons’ entrance 4 seems very sturdy and Jack Wilshere has the qualities to unlock defences [providing those injury doubts don’t haunt him].
“I suppose there may nonetheless be a few exits if the squad appears somewhat too giant and there is a suggestion that Marko Arnautovic may entice consideration from elsewhere. However based mostly on what has been accomplished to date the supporters can be anticipating a top-10 end, a push for doable European qualification and a cup run.”
Watford
Place final season: 14th
Transfers in: Gerard Deulofeu (Barcelona) £11.5m, Adam Masina (Bologna) £3.5m, Marc Navarro (Espanyol) £1.8m, Ben Wilmot (Stevenage) undisclosed, Ken Sema (Ostersund) undisclosed, Ben Foster (West Brom) undisclosed
Transfers out: Costel Pantilimon (Nottingham Forest) undisclosed, Mauro Zarate (Boca Juniors) undisclosed, Brandon Mason (Coventry) free
BBC Three Counties Radio’s Geoff Doyle: “It seems as if Watford have once more been canny within the switch market, not spending an excessive amount of (about £25m to date) however bringing in gamers to strengthen final season’s downside areas to bolster a squad which is already fairly sturdy however which was badly hampered by accidents final marketing campaign.
“Ben Foster is a superb goalkeeper alternative, two full-backs have been required and have been introduced in early, Gerard Deulofeu will proceed to get higher and the others may additionally make their mark.
“A striker is the one space that in all probability nonetheless wants strengthening. Troy Deeney’s affect has lessened over the three Premier League years though damage hasn’t helped and Andre Grey did not fairly hit the mark final season so confirmed back-up might be wanted if these two do not hearth.”
Brighton
Place final season: 15th
Transfers in: Bernardo (RB Leipzig) £9m, Florin Andone (Deportivo) undisclosed, Jason Steele (Sunderland) undisclosed, David Button (Fulham) undisclosed, Yves Bissouma (Lille) undisclosed, Leon Balogun (Mainz) free, Joseph Tomlinson (Yeovil) free, Hugo Keto (Arsenal) free

BBC Sussex’s Johnny Cantor: “The Seagulls moved rapidly to safe long-term targets early within the window and opted for gamers with versatility like Leon Balogun and Bernardo who can play in numerous positions.
“Initially the primary focus was on the defence and two new keepers however the highlight has moved additional up the pitch.
“The arrival of central midfielder Yves Bissouma could permit for various possibility of a 4-3-Three subsequent season, a doable Plan B to enhance on final 12 months’s away from dwelling [11 points] however a artistic quantity 10 or one other large participant could full the squad alongside the cut-price seize of Florin Andone earlier in the summertime.”
Huddersfield
Place final season: 16th
Transfers in: Terence Kongolo (Monaco) £17m, Ramadan Sobhi (Stoke) £5.7m, Juninho Bacuna (Groningen) undisclosed, Jonas Lossl (Mainz) undisclosed, Erik Durm (Borussia Dortmund) undisclosed, Ben Hamer (Leicester) free
Transfers out: Dean Whitehead (retired), Dylan Cogill (Clyde) free, Jack Boyle (Clyde) free, Jack Payne (Bradford) mortgage, Robert Inexperienced, Denilson Carvalho, Luca Colville, Cameron Taylor (all launched)
BBC Radio Leeds’ Paul Ogden: “To this point, a traditional modern-day Huddersfield City switch window, with a nod in the direction of the monetary reward for having stayed within the Premier League on the first try.
“A brand new membership switch file has been set by the everlasting acquisition of Terence Kongolo from Monaco, accompanied by a handful of different, extra obscure, and sometimes daring bargain-hunter’s captures.
“Egypt’s Ramadan Sobhi for instance, salvaged from the rubble of Stoke’s relegation collapse, would not have many different Premier League golf equipment. Head coach David Wagner nonetheless, can have seen one thing he favored in Sobhi as an opponent final season and consider he can get way more from the participant than others have.
“Equally unique is the arrival of ex-Germany worldwide Erik Durm so as to add some much-needed nous to Huddersfield’s left facet. His low danger, quick contract from Borussia Dortmund is a traditional win-win.”
Southampton
Place final season: 17th
Transfers in: Mohamed Elyounoussi (Basel) £16m, Angus Gunn (Man Metropolis) £13.5m, Stuart Armstrong (Celtic) £7m, Jannik Vestergaard (Borussia Monchengladbach) undisclosed

BBC Radio Solent’s Adam Blackmore: “I count on additional motion after an excellent summer time to date for Saints. They might add a ahead/winger however I believe they are going to be eager to maneuver Sofiane Boufal out on mortgage first. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster additionally seems set for a mortgage transfer away following the funding in Angus Gunn.
“Some supporters are calling for one more striker, after struggling for objectives within the final two seasons.”
Wolves
Shades of Banks – Portugal keeper’s sensible save
Place final season: champions (Championship)
Transfers in: Benik Afobe (Bournemouth) £10m, Willy Boly (Porto) £10m, Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon) fee not yet decided, Leo Bonatini (Al-Hilal) undisclosed, Ruben Vinagre (Monaco) undisclosed, Raul Jimenez (Benfica) mortgage, Diogo Jota (Atletico Madrid) undisclosed
Transfers out: Ben Marshall (Norwich) undisclosed, Duckens Nazon (STVV) undisclosed, Prince Oniangue (Caen) undisclosed, Jon Flatt (Scunthorpe) free, Hakeem Odoffin (Northampton) free, Jordan Allan, Dan Armstrong, Anthony Breslin, Nicu Carnat, Ross Finnie, Conor Levingston, Tomas Nogueira, Adam Osbourne, Ryan Rainey, Jose Xavier (all launched), Benik Afobe (Stoke) mortgage, Christian Herc (Dunajska Streda) mortgage, Aaron Collins (Colchester) mortgage, Sherwin Seedorf (Bradford) mortgage, Roderick Miranda (Olympiakos) mortgage
BBC WM 95.6’s Mike Taylor: “Wolves supporters anticipating a wild summer time of spending from their rich house owners following promotion have to date been left, if not upset, then perhaps somewhat unfulfilled. It is laborious to consider that can keep the case for lengthy. A lot of the cash to date laid out this summer time has been to consolidate final 12 months’s squad by turning loans into everlasting offers, most notably for the massively standard Willy Boly and Diogo Jota, and so they did not come cheaply.
“The signing of the Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio could have been somewhat opportunistic, Wolves plucking him out of Sporting Lisbon’s summer time of chaos, to the clear annoyance of his former employers, who’re decided to extract some type of cost not less than. There are suggestions that Sporting want £50m for the keeper! Whereas his high quality and worth is past doubt, it may very well be argued that different areas of the squad extra urgently require reinforcement.
“Raul Jimenez on mortgage is to date the ahead new to the membership, and though he is loved success with Benfica, they’ve used him sparingly in view of their complete outlay for him. If he proves to be successful or is joined by one other striker, Benik Afobe’s rapid departure to Stoke after signing a full deal will look much less uncommon. An extra central defender would appear to be a possible precedence too, and it might be no shock to see Wolves use the loan-with-a-view-to-permanent technique extensively once more in no matter remaining enterprise they take into account.”
Cardiff
Place final season: second (Championship)
Transfers in: Josh Murphy (Norwich) £11m, Bobby Reid (Bristol Metropolis) £10m, Greg Cunningham (Preston) £4m, Alex Smithies (QPR) £3.5m,
Transfers out: None
BBC Wales’ Dafydd Pritchard: “Proprietor Vincent Tan mentioned Cardiff Metropolis would be taught from their earlier stint within the Premier League – which ended after a single tumultuous season in 2014 – and their spending this summer time suggests they’ve accomplished simply that.
“Winger Josh Murphy, ahead Bobby Reid, goalkeeper Alex Smithies and left-back Greg Cunningham have joined for lower than £30m between them, including high quality to the squad which received promotion from the Championship in environment friendly style final season.
“Supervisor Neil Warnock has accomplished his enterprise early and apart from a number of mortgage signings – Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is within the body to return – he appears unlikely to make many extra additions.”
Fulham
Place final season: third, play-off winners (Championship)
Transfers in: Jean Michael Seri (Good) undisclosed, Maxime le Marchand (Good) undisclosed.
Transfers out: David Button (Brighton) undisclosed, Ryan Fredericks (West Ham) free, Stephen Humphrys (Scunthorpe) mortgage, Elijah Adebayo (Swindon) mortgage
BBC Radio London’s Andy Rowley: “Fulham followers are already hoping they have the Ivorian Xavi as Jean Michael Seri has topped the Ligue 1 rankings for passes performed and accomplished for the previous two seasons. He ought to actually slot in with the best way they play their soccer beneath Slavisa Jokanovic, who may even be eager to convey Aleksandar Mitrovic and Matt Targett to Craven Cottage on everlasting offers after the Southampton and Newcastle gamers impressed on mortgage within the second half of final season’s promotion marketing campaign.
“Fulham have additionally been busy tying key gamers to long-term offers with captain Tom Cairney and influential USA defender Tim Ream extending their contracts. That is excellent news after dropping full-back Ryan Fredericks, who ran down his contract and moved to West Ham on a free switch.
“They should strengthen in central defence, at left-back and up entrance.”

Each year, for the last tree year, there is a special celebration that honors cancer survivors. In this issue, you get to meet eight beautiful and brave women. Enjoy!
Karen Garza
Karen Garza is fifteen years of age and she is a cancer survivor. She is the middle child and a sophomore at Johnny Economedes High School.
Karen likes to have fun hanging out with friends and family and also listening to music. “when I have nothing else to do, I color,” she said. Tell us about your journey? “I was 14 years when I was diagnosed with AML Leukemia on October 19, 2014. The worst part for me as a teenager was when my hair started falling. When I would go to stores, people would just stare at me for having my bandana on. I was scared to go back to school because I thought kids were going to make fun of me for having boy hair, but I was wrong.”
Shirley Arnolde
Shirley Arnolde, originally from Chicago, lives in McAllen with her wife Debbie. They are blessed with a son, a wonderful daughter-in-law and four fantastic grandchildren!  As the Clinical Administrator for La Clinica Maria Luisa located in Penitas, Shirley has enjoyed the past fourteen years serving uninsured low-income families. Her journey started two years ago when she suffered a stroke, making her aware that she needed to start paying attention to her health.
Her medical history included six benign lumpectomies, though she had noticed other lumps in her breast, she chose to ignore them, not feeling it necessary to undergo further lumpectomies. However, her new-found desire to care more for herself forced her to undergo routine testing including a mammogram.  This mammogram was followed by extensive testing including 5 biopsies, all returning “questionable.”  Aware of her mother, aunt and older sister all being survivors of breast cancer combined with test results led to a total mastectomy.
Shirley says that events like “Day of Honor” and “Project Runway” have imprinted on her heart and made her realize that you can take the ugliness of cancer and make it beautiful through survivorship.  “It’s up to us to feel as beautiful as we are,” she says.  Her best advice to others, “Don’t wait to take care of yourself, others depend on you, so you have to be good to yourself, first.”
Susie Granados
Susie Granados and her husband set out to build a successful business, which they operated for nearly 30 years.  She was a young woman of 34 when she was first diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 3. She bravely endured a total hysterectomy and treatments that allowed her to win this battle.  Then again at the age of 54, she received the devastating announcement of stage 3 breast cancer.  Through the advancement of treatments, Susie once again beat the odds.
She is a survivor thanks to God and her amazing husband, Jaime, children: Jean Marie Macias, Jaime Felipe and Lupe, her adorable grandkids, her sister Sylvia Loera, her niece Ana Gonzalez and so many family and friends that gave her the strength to never give up. Through this battle, Susie has lost many things but at the same time gained so much more. She is happy to be alive and to continue in this journey we call life.  She shares with other women, “You know your body, if something is not right, don’t wait. Go see your doctor immediately, and it could save your life.”
Brenda Gonzalez
Brenda Gonzalez has always felt that her family is her most important priority. Married and a mother of three, she has always been blessed to have the support of her family through the good times and bad. She gives all the honor and glory to God for this complication called cancer. Through this dreaded disease she has come to realize the importance of every day blessings and a true love for life. She is eternally grateful for all of the beautiful people who have come across her path blessing her along this journey. She says, “The most important gift you can give to others is the example of a positive spirit.”
Meldi Pro Martinez
Meldi Pro Martinez is blessed with a twenty-nine-year marriage to her high school sweetheart Angel Martinez. Together they have three beautiful children: Andrew, Celeste and Evie, and her family now includes a beautiful daughter-in-law, Celia. Though a nurse by trade, she currently uses her time to volunteer in our community, serves on committees and has founded a special needs trust, Madi’s Circle of Hope.
Meldi’s battle with cancer began in August 2013 with the diagnosis of breast cancer. She is grateful to her friends and family who surrounded her with love and prayers throughout this battle.   Though her January 2016 celebration of her remission was short-lived with the discovery in July of the same year, of metastatic breast cancer, she remains positive and determined to beat this again. With much prayer, chemo and clinical trials at MD Anderson, the cancer has been miraculously disappearing. Thirty days ago, she had a brain tumor removed and endured a round of radiation. She says, “By the Grace of God, I am in stable remission and I am still here.”
Elsa Laura Ramos
Elsa Laura Ramos has been married for 33 years, and is a homemaker, mother of three and now the grandmother of two beautiful girls. Being diagnosed with cancer in March 2015, brought her to the hardest decision of life. Though at the beginning she considered not submitting to treatment, with the insistence of her husband and surgeon she decided to take on this battle. After two surgeries and 30 treatments of radiation she is now grateful to be in remission.
Elsa feels blessed today to dedicate life to her family and be able to gather with friends to enjoy good food and great friendships.  She gives the honor and glory to God, her husband, Rene Ramos, and her family for being by her side through this journey. Her best word of advice, “never give up!”
Maria Esmeralda Sanchez
Maria Esmeralda Sanchez, has enjoyed a twenty-two-year marriage to Gerardo Sanchez, they are parents to Gerardo Sanchez Jr.  She has been employed with the Rio Hondo ISD for 22 years. She began her battle with breast cancer on January 10, 2013. She gives honor to God and her medical team for providing her with the courage and strength to face this challenging chapter in her life.
With encouragement from her son, Maria Esmeralda was able to obtain a 1st Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo in May 2017. She is grateful for all the individuals who contribute their time and monetary donations to research for defeating this disease because of this effort the chances of surviving cancer today are improving and new advances are made every day.  She says, “It is imperative that we continue to work hard to find a cure for cancer so that no one has to go through the suffering and pain that so many of us have endured.”
Sylvia Guerra-Fortuin

Excessivism is an art movement which was introduced by American artist and curator Kaloust Guedel in 2005 with an exhibition titled Excessivist Initative. The artist himself is a Cyprus-born but LA-based contemporary artist. His work often has taken a critical stand on various societies shortcomings. Over his active year, he has covered subjects like war, abuse, genocide and similar others. Regardless of his ranging style and techniques, his work has constantly fitting with contemporary sensibility and has reflected the consciousness of its time. I feel this is what a modern artist is. Someone who applies their idea across a range of materials in order to fully establish the correct and true relationship that can be explored and presented in mediums and materials. I feel this is something to keep in mind during my work. New techniques can yield interesting results which yes may make me uncomfortable and end up turning out shit but its this purity and rawness in my work that in feel will transcribe statements the best by portraying emotions that can gain a response from the audience. Along side this i also enjoy the fact his work reflect his context in time. I want to capture this view of mine, influenced by my generation and its influences, in this time. I feel this is how i achieve unique work and meanings within as each day my views change as the media continues to bullshit and social media continues into its meltdown panic. To me, art is like a snapshot in time. Each art piece has to traces of external influences which make piece unique. This is because its like everything came together at that one time and spawned that creation and it simply couldnt be done again because the style wouldn't be the same and the atmosphere would be completely different. I feel it is my job to capture my views, and this world i live in as to therefore forever keep this critic to remind society and the audience that things can change or need to change. It can also inspire as it can show people pushing for change can happen and using your voice is essential in building a democratic society of equality and peace. In a way, this is what this Excessivism art movement is. Its a creation that has spawned from reflection, examination and investigation of every aspect of life in excessive state with particular consideration to the areas that have real and consequential effect on the members of society. This feels very liberal in a retaliation to a conservative world. In practice, Excessivism depicts the excessive use of resources in an exaggerated way, by means of two- or three-dimensional visual creations, written or spoken words, or in any other manner. It aims at a reflection, examination, or investigation of the capitalist system, devoid of aesthetic, legal, commercial, ethical, moral, racial, or religious considerations. I feel like this art movement study could help me develop my work in the ways of creating a physical reaction to the art piece. I feel by doing this i can cause controversy and more importantly questions which set up the debate. I want my statements to be talked about in order to increase the spotlight on the issue i have picked. Im very inspired by liberal views in a way like this art movement and i think they have a great idea of creating grand scale gestures to add a awe and shock value. I feel i need to explore with space and its internal composition in order to maximise the meaning of my work. I also really like the idea of words, i feel this is a ground starting point for the idea of data and intelligence which can then be developed into an exaggerated way which would help individualise my statements as well as heightening the deeper meaning within the work. I feel the audience of this targets to critic conservative groups while simultaneously gathering support from liberals. This is very similar to my political stance and what will no doubt show in my own art pieces. I can see myself creating this large piece of continuous handwriting which takes several hours to complete to then burn it up or for the text lines to overlap and become unreadable or for the sheet to be folded so you cant see what i have wrote on it. This feels very over the top for a result which defys the idea of communicating. Instead im trying to suggest what im trying to communicate in an interest to use an audiences intellect to fill the blank spaces. Therefore creating a working relationship between work and viewers which again draws interest and creates vital dialogue on issues i see need to be shown on display.
The manifesto was wrote and then signed by the likes of: Brett Baker, Christophe Baudson, Andrew Dadson, Ian Davenport, Jonas Etter, Kaloust Guedel, Don Harger, Zhu Jinshi, Fabian, Marcacio, Roxy Paine, Scott Richter, Samvel Saghatelian, Elizabeth Sheppell, Michael Toenges, Michael Villarreal, Danh Vo, Cullen Washington jr., Brigid Watson, Leslie Wayne , Ai Weiwei, Zadik Zadikian (all popular artists who are known for their extreme, eccentric and unique traits to themselves and their work).
